Summary

Generated-profile cleanup now refuses a final-component symlink before changing Codex configuration or recovery evidence.

  • Guard pathname unlink with the held configuration lock, canonical parent, and identity rechecks. The operation is not atomic against a writer that ignores that lock.
  • Preserve configuration and journal state when an eligible profile has been replaced by a symlink, including a dangling generated-profile link. Treat ENOENT at the final type observation as absence.
  • Keep config publication before profile removal and cover it with withConfigWriteRecovery, so a later removal refusal can restore the owned config preimage.
  • Extend the existing journal regressions and update the Codex-home contract.

Verification

Current head: cc7897e4576d159782cb26ef916dd84da4758d8c.

  • Bun 1.4.3: bun test --isolate --timeout 60000 tests/codex-integration/codex-journal.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-journal-recovery.test.ts — 52 passed, 0 failed, 6 POSIX-only skips on Windows.
  • Three cross-platform regressions failed before the fix: config was left published after a profile-removal refusal, dangling-link metadata was treated as a completed restore, and ENOENT at the type check escaped. All three pass with the patch. A real dangling-symlink test is included for POSIX CI, and the existing symlink-refusal case now asserts overall failure.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check passed.
  • The four follow-up review threads have fixes and author replies. Current-head aggregate CI passed on cc7897e45.
  • A full local repository run was not repeated across the active worktrees. The focused journal files and completed hosted CI provide the validation scope.

Checklist

  • Cleanup preserves the existing configuration-lock and recovery contracts.
  • Focused regression coverage and validation limits are recorded.
  • Current-head CI passed.
  • Codex-home documentation is updated.

📝 Walkthrough

Codex profile removal now uses a lock-validated helper and refuses symlinked profiles. Journal restoration also stops when the injected profile is a symlink. Integration tests and documentation cover these checks.

Changes: Codex profile safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guarded profile removal
src/codex/config-write-lock.ts, src/codex/inject/config-write-section.ts, src/codex/inject/remove.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-journal.test.ts
The new removal helper verifies the lock, destination, and inode before unlinking, then verifies absence. removeCodexConfig refuses a symlinked profile and uses the helper for profile removal. Tests check that refusal preserves the config, journal, symlink, and target.
Journal restoration guard
src/codex/journal.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-journal.test.ts, structure/codex-home.md
Journal restoration stops before changing config, profile, or journal when the injected profile is a symlink. Tests cover regular and symlinked profiles. The documentation describes the removal and restoration checks.

Reject a matching journal profile symlink before restoring config or
deleting recovery evidence. Preserve regular-profile replay and match
both generated and previously existing profile snapshots.

Closing completed source tracking after the full seven-file change at cc7897e was preserved byte for byte in published commit 798080e. This includes rollback after profile-removal refusal, dangling generated-profile link checks, ENOENT handling, the recovery regressions, and the cooperative-lock limitation documentation. On the integration candidate, Bun 1.4.3 ran the two journal files: 52 passed, 6 POSIX-only skipped, 0 failed, with 318 assertions; typecheck, structure checks, privacy scan and diff checks also passed. Published-head CI and maintainer security review remain separate pending stages, so this closure does not claim merge or release readiness. The source branch and validation history are retained.
