Summary

  • Bound unfinished picker uploads with absolute and idle-progress deadlines. Release admission and clear upload timers when the body completes or the first upstream response arrives, so an accepted response is not interrupted by upload clocks.
  • Preserve early refusal responses while bounding unfinished body drains and closing the appropriate HTTP/1 connection or HTTP/2 stream.
  • Stabilize the Windows tray lifecycle regression: launch badge probes through the production initialization/first-tick sequence and wait for the child's PID readiness signal before forcing expiry. An intentionally delayed child covers the readiness race. The 250ms maintenance limit and termination/reaping assertions remain intact.

Verification

Current head: a7b9af82112be564de3ed56a50e9834b6f28e760.

  • Current-head hosted CI, attempt 2 passed: all four Linux test shards, all nine Windows shards, and the aggregate ci check succeeded. Attempt 1 was superseded by a rerun of an obsolete PR head; attempt 2 actually reran the canceled test jobs.
  • Picker upload regressions at parent 7c0057b3: 29 passed, including HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 cases that failed before clearing the upload clocks on the first upstream response.
  • Windows tray focused file on Bun 1.4.3: 28 passed, 0 failed. This covers the unchanged tray patch carried onto the current parent. The old harness failed with zero recorded launches when child readiness was delayed by 1.5 seconds; the corrected harness waited for readiness.
  • Negative control: a temporary 600ms block in maintenance failed the unchanged 250ms assertion at 705ms. The temporary production change was restored.
  • bun run typecheck passed on 7c0057b3 plus the committed tray patch. git diff --check and bun run src/cli/index.ts help passed.
  • The Windows 8/9 command was attempted with Bun 1.4.3, OPENCODEX_BUN_PATH unset, and the workflow's TEST_SHARD=8/9, BUN_TEST_FILE_SCOPE=all, BUN_TEST_BATCH_SIZE=6, BUN_TEST_BATCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=480, and OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 settings. It reached batch 44/46 after approximately 62 minutes and was stopped; the local full shard did not complete and is not passing evidence. An unintended second driver had also corrupted the early shared log. No full-shard pass count is claimed. The earlier attempt that inherited Bun 1.4.2 is excluded from verification.
  • The focused regression and negative control cover the tray change; another full local run was disproportionate after the incomplete hour-long attempt. The completed hosted run above supplies the broader platform validation.
  • The previous-head Windows failure was a separate 25-second secondary-start timeout in tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts. This tray patch does not claim to fix that startup timeout; the current-head hosted run completed successfully.
  • Related upstream picker fix: lidge-jun/opencodex#7015. The fork CI result above applies to this fork head, including its tray-test follow-up.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Uploads now have configurable overall and idle-time limits. Stalled or excessively long uploads are stopped, while upstream backpressure can delay idle-time expiration.
    • Refused HTTP/1.1 requests with incomplete uploads can finish sending their remaining data before the connection closes, preserving the refusal response.
    • HTTP/2 streams now close cleanly after a complete response, including generated error responses.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Completed uploads can still receive a delayed response after upload time limits have elapsed.

Preserve bounded runtime ownership and failure behavior, with focused
regression coverage and the owning architecture contract.

📝 Walkthrough

The listener adds configurable upload deadlines and idle timeouts. It drains refused HTTP/1.1 uploads after sending the refusal response. The integration tests cover timeout behavior, backpressure, and refused-upload handling.

Changes: Upload lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and enforce upload timeouts
src/claude/intercept/picker-listener.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-upload.test.ts, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md
PickerListenerOptions adds upload deadline and idle-timeout settings. The defaults are 60 seconds and 15 seconds. Startup rejects invalid values. Upstream uploads use an absolute deadline and a progress-reset idle timer. Backpressure delays idle expiration, but not the absolute deadline. Tests cover admission, expiration, backpressure, and completed uploads.
Handle refused requests with unfinished input
src/claude/intercept/picker-listener.ts, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-upload.test.ts
For refused HTTP/1.1 requests with unfinished input, the listener drains the request while preserving the refusal response. The documentation describes HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 cleanup behavior. Tests cover refusal responses and subsequent requests.

When the listener refuses an unfinished HTTP/1.1 upload, it closes the connection as soon as the refusal is sent instead of draining the remaining upload as intended. Clients can therefore fail to complete the upload drain or can see the connection reset. Fix the refusal close behavior before merging.

Fixed in 6832dfd — with a different mechanism than the suggested Connection: close, because that header can't work here under Bun.

Bun's HTTP server ends the socket immediately after res.end() when Connection: close is set (verified empirically: socket closed ~1ms after the reply flush while the request body was still in flight). Restoring the header would reintroduce the truncated-reply regression the drain was added to fix — the h1 buffered refusal cases fail with ECONNRESET when the header is restored.

Instead the fix makes the keep-alive advertisement honest: once the refused upload's body drains to completion, the socket is left open for reuse — a pipelined or pooled follow-up request is relayed normally instead of dropped. Only a body that stalls past the absolute/idle deadline or aborts early still ends the socket. The refusal cases where the body never completes keep their graceful bounded close.

New regression test h1 refusal keeps the same connection alive once the upload drains asserts a subsequent request reuses the same socket and gets a 200 after the refusal.

Review triage summary — 6832dfd

All open review threads on this PR (2 findings, both Devin Review) were genuine and are fixed; none dismissed. CodeRabbit produced no review findings (auto-review skipped for this repo) and the Codex security review completed clean.

Fixed

  • HTTP/1.1 refusal advertised keep-alive while its socket was closed after drain — rather than restoring Connection: close (which under Bun forces the socket shut right after res.end(), re-introducing the truncated-reply bug the drain exists to prevent — verified by ECONNRESET on the buffered refusal cases), the drained refusal now leaves a cleanly completed body's socket open for reuse. The keep-alive advertisement is honest again; a pipelined or pooled follow-up request is relayed instead of dropped. Stalled (absolute/idle deadline) or aborted bodies still end the socket gracefully.
  • Idle expiry could kill an upload stalled by upstream backpressure — req.pipe(upReq) pauses data events while the upstream writable is full, so the idle timer observed relay consumption rather than client activity. Idle expiry now rechecks each interval while upReq.writableNeedDrain holds; the absolute upload deadline still bounds blocked uploads.

Verification

  • bun test tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-upload.test.ts: 25/25 pass, including two new regressions — h1 refusal keeps the same connection alive once the upload drains and upstream backpressure does not expire an active upload as idle (both fail against the previous head).
  • bun test tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-listener.test.ts: 46/46 pass.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, git diff --check: pass.
  • bun run test:changed (339 files): the only failures are pre-existing Windows environment issues — Local CA Windows owner/ACL inspection failed, temp-dir EBUSY locks, and 5s timeouts under 4x parallelism — identical on the merge base d25391ddc (verified by re-running a failing test against base).
  • structure/clients/claude-desktop.md updated for the new drain/reuse and idle-backpressure semantics.

Done. PR #724 had 2 unresolved findings (both Devin Review; CodeRabbit skipped auto-review, Codex security review was clean). Both were genuine — fixed and pushed as 6832dfdad, threads replied and resolved, summary posted.

  1. HTTP/1.1 refusal advertised keep-alive while its socket was closed — genuine, but the suggested Connection: close restore is wrong under Bun: it forces the socket shut right after res.end() while the body is still in flight (I verified ECONNRESET on the buffered refusal cases — the exact reply-loss the PR's drain exists to prevent). Instead I made keep-alive honest: a body that drains to completion leaves the socket reusable, so a pipelined/pooled next request is relayed instead of dropped. Stalled or aborted bodies still get the bounded graceful close.

  2. Idle expiry could kill uploads stalled by upstream backpressure — req.pipe(upReq) pauses data events when the upstream writable fills, so the idle timer was measuring relay consumption, not client activity. Idle expiry now rechecks while upReq.writableNeedDrain holds; the absolute deadline still bounds blocked uploads, as the review recommended.

Verification: focused suite 25/25 (incl. 2 new regression tests, both fail on the old head), picker-listener suite 46/46, typecheck/privacy:scan/structure:check/diff --check all pass. test:changed (339 files) had only pre-existing Windows env failures (Local CA ACL, temp-dir EBUSY, timeouts) — identical on the merge base, verified by re-running one on base. structure/clients/claude-desktop.md updated. Full CI is pending on the new head.

Follow-up triage at 6832dfdad: checked all review, inline-comment, and issue-comment pages for Devin Review, CodeRabbit, and the Codex connector. No unresolved findings remain.

  • Both Devin findings were already fixed in 6832dfdad and their threads are resolved (drained HTTP/1.1 connection reuse; upstream-backpressure-aware idle expiry). Confirmed the fixes are present in the fetched head.
  • CodeRabbit skipped automatic review; the Codex connector reports a completed security review on the earlier head with no posted findings.
  • Newly fixed: 0. Dismissed: 0. No code changes or duplicate thread replies needed; checks were not rerun on unchanged code.

One new accepted-upload clock finding, separate from the already-resolved refusal-drain / destroySoon thread. Reproduced against the current head; no branch edits were made.

Comment thread src/claude/intercept/picker-listener.ts Outdated
The pre-response deadline/idle timers armed in the upload block were
never cleared when the upstream answered, so a slow reply to an
unfinished POST was destroyed mid-delivery by expireUpload. Clear both
clocks when the upstream response starts and guard the idle/progress
paths against rearming; refused-input and post-response bounds stay.

Investigate the Windows secondary-start timeout separately from the upload-clock fix.

At exact fork head 7c0057b3c, Windows 8/9 failed a secondary start preserves shared client bytes and records the sibling owner in tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts:112,347: the child was still running but had not published its runtime record after 25,018ms (startupComplete:false). The batch recorded 122 pass / 7 skip / 1 fail. This remains a real current-head CI failure; the 107 passing local picker/layout checks do not cover it.

Using the unchanged repository-pinned Bun 1.4.3 runner and that exact test-name filter, I independently get 1 pass / 0 fail on Linux at 7c0057b3c (~1.10s) and current upstream dev 6da27743 (~1.06s), with 32 other cases intentionally filtered on each. The fixture, startup-output helper, CLI entry, cross-home owner, owner registry and sibling-start source blobs are identical between those heads. The latest upload fix changes only the picker listener and its upload tests.

These Linux controls do not reproduce the Windows failure or establish that it is infrastructure-only. Please capture the child's Windows startup phases/elapsed times and compare the exact case against dev under the same pinned runner before assigning a cause or increasing the watchdog. No CI rerun, timeout relaxation or unrelated picker change was made during this investigation.

Match the badge probe's production initialization and first-tick launch order before measuring maintenance. Wait for the child PID readiness signal instead of a fixed sleep, and cover delayed Online readiness. Keep the 250ms maintenance and process reaping assertions intact.

Closing this proposal after preserving its independent Windows tray test improvements. Both tests/helpers/windows-tray-probe-lifecycle-driver.ps1 and tests/windows/windows-tray.test.ts from a7b9af8 are byte-identical in published commit 23b4333. This preserves the production startup sequence, explicit child readiness wait, delayed-child regression, and unchanged maintenance time limit. The upload deadline proposal is not being carried forward: the maintainer rejected the 60-second absolute cap because it interrupts legitimate slow attachment uploads; existing post-response cleanup already bounds abandoned input. This is a design closure, not a claim that the whole patch was merged or duplicated. The source branch and validation history are retained.
