Summary

Cancellation aborts active work immediately while admission remains held until its owner finishes unwinding.

  • Retain the active-turn, session-lane, and attached admission leases until finalization.
  • Reject admission for an already-aborted request and prevent canceled selections from claiming a native account.
  • Snapshot bound controllers during abort propagation so a synchronous release listener cannot prevent the remaining controllers from receiving cancellation.
  • Keep late canceled controllers known for idempotent unregister calls, while refusing to register them as active owners or transfer admission to them.
  • Run fixture teardown in a nested finally even when its finalization wait throws.
  • Extend disconnect/admission regressions and update the lifecycle ownership contracts.

Verification

Current head: df7d1e2ea926c7b90205a5da4165f39d5e7dfbc9.

  • Two new late-controller regressions failed before the fix: the synchronous abort/unregister callback released admission prematurely, both with and without an earlier transferred controller.
  • Bun 1.4.3 with --isolate --timeout 60000: the initial three-file run reported 49 passed and 13 failed after the first server test hit its explicit 15-second timeout and later fixtures reported owner conflicts. The affected active-turn-disconnect.test.ts file was then rerun alone and passed all 23 tests. These are separate executions, not one clean combined run; no timeout was raised.
  • active-registry-admission.test.ts and workflow-budget.test.ts passed in the initial run. bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, and git diff --check passed.
  • The two follow-up review findings have fixes and author replies. Current-head CI is pending; the preceding-head CI is historical evidence only.
  • A full local repository suite was not repeated across the active worktrees. Hosted CI remains required for broader current-head validation.

Checklist

  • Cancellation and final release have distinct ownership.
  • Focused regression coverage and validation limits are recorded.
  • Current-head CI passed.
  • Runtime and Responses lifecycle contracts are updated.

📝 Walkthrough

Turn cancellation now aborts bound work without immediately releasing turn admission or related ownership. Already-aborted signals cannot acquire a lease, and canceled turns cannot claim the native-main profile. Integration tests cover ownership retention until pending work finalizes.

Changes: Turn cancellation and admission ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cancellation and admission mechanics
src/server/lifecycle.ts
At lines 175–250, tryAdmitTurn rejects an already-aborted signal. Cancellation aborts bound controllers but retains the lease. Controllers bound later are aborted immediately, and canceled turns cannot claim the native-main profile.
Ownership retention and finalization checks
structure/runtime.md, structure/transports/responses.md, tests/codex-integration/active-turn-disconnect.test.ts
The lifecycle contract and tests specify that admission and ownership remain held while work is pending, then release after finalization. Tests cover account selection, controller cancellation, internal dispatch, Live upgrades, saturation, and reentrant release.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b048d

If a controller is bound to an already-cancelled turn, its cleanup can still release admission and session ownership before the turn finishes, which reintroduces the early-release problem this change aims to fix. A small reorder fixes it; resolve it before merging.

both server stops in the outer `finally` are reached when finalization times

Closing duplicate tracking after preserving the complete change in independently verified integration commit 964a17fa7892103c888883af57cc7cf88a19f4d8 based on development revision e6d7e561f566ab343fbf545a6fa3e1b63012f817. All 4 changed files match source HEAD df7d1e2ea926c7b90205a5da4165f39d5e7dfbc9 byte for byte. The updated source regression file passed 23 cases after the two new failure reproductions; type, structure, materialized-file privacy and diff checks passed on the byte-identical integration candidate. Integration remains unmerged and requires its own CI and maintainer review. The source branch is retained.
