Summary

Code-mode declaration matching could repeatedly rescan descriptions containing many candidate Promise separators, and repeat the work for every pending heading.

  • Replace the backtracking declaration regex with bounded forward scans and index pending headings by name.
  • Skip quoted type text and line/block comments with escape awareness when counting delimiters, and require the return type's generics to close fully. Ordinary field comments containing apostrophes or brackets retain their evidence; unterminated opaque text is refused.
  • Oversized descriptions contribute no nested evidence, and oversized declaration bodies are not recognized. The contradiction scan still reads oversized descriptions.
  • Update the parsing contract in structure/subagents.md.

Verification

Current head: ce1fa40b2201e04364cc816ed71282c22520f78a.

  • Bun 1.4.3: bun test tests/codex-integration/code-mode-collab-surface.test.ts tests/codex-integration/deferred-collab-surface.test.ts — 93 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, and git diff --check passed on the committed patch.
  • Nine new public collabSurface cases cover quoted/comment text, unterminated regions, and a comment-heavy declaration below the existing size cap. The preceding head had been observed to lose V1 evidence for ordinary field comments containing an apostrophe or unmatched bracket.
  • Current-head hosted CI and its aggregate ci check passed on ce1fa40b.
  • A full local repository suite was not repeated across the active worktrees. Focused parser regressions and completed hosted CI provide the validation scope.
  • Existing review threads are resolved. Maintainer review remains a separate merge requirement.

Checklist

  • Focused regressions for the changed behavior are included.
  • Current-head CI passed.
  • Structure documentation is updated.
  • Quote, generic-closure, and comment-handling findings have regression coverage.
  • Reviewed by maintainer.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Collaboration detection now recognizes complete tool declarations across single- and multi-line formats, including supported parameter types and non-empty promise return types.
    • Oversized descriptions and declaration bodies no longer count as collaboration evidence, reducing false detections from malformed or excessively large input.
    • Nested headings are matched more accurately when multiple headings share a tool name.

The code-mode collaboration detector introduced in lidge-jun#6977 validated each
exec tool declaration fence with /^(?:args|input): \S[\s\S]*\): Promise<
[^>\s][\s\S]*>; \};$/. Two overlapping unrestricted repetitions let a
fence body full of "): Promise<a" separators force a quadratic rescan on
rejection, and the owner lookup re-ran the match once per pending
heading. An admitted POST /v1/responses caller supplies the exec
description, so a sub-megabyte request could starve the shared event
loop for seconds; effort-cap normalization invokes collabSurface() even
when multi-agent guidance is disabled.

completeDeclarationName() now checks fixed boundaries and scans forward
once for the Promise separator, the owner lookup indexes pending
headings by name, and nested-evidence parsing is bounded to 1 MiB
descriptions and 64 KiB declaration bodies. The contradiction scan still
reads oversized descriptions, so a large listing can only push a turn
toward null.

Regression tests drive ~393 KiB of repeated separators with and without
256 pending same-name headings through collabSurface(); each resolves in
milliseconds where the previous matcher starved the loop for seconds.

📝 Walkthrough

The collaboration-surface parser now recognizes complete tool declarations with bounded description and declaration sizes. It indexes pending headings by name and removes the owning heading and later pending headings when a declaration matches.

Changes: Collaboration-surface parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded declaration recognition
src/server/responses/code-mode-collab-surface.ts, structure/subagents.md
The parser validates complete declarations with args or input parameters and a non-empty Promise return type. Descriptions over 1 MiB provide no nested evidence, and declaration bodies over 64 KiB are not recognized. The documentation describes these limits.
Indexed heading ownership
src/server/responses/code-mode-collab-surface.ts, tests/codex-integration/code-mode-collab-surface.test.ts
Pending headings are indexed by normalized name. A matching declaration removes its owning heading and later pending headings. Regression tests cover malformed declaration bodies, repeated same-name headings, and oversized descriptions.

Upstream refactored codeModeV1Evidence into analyzeCodeModeExec for the
new deferred-collab-surface lane; the linear-time declaration parse now
backs both callers. subagents.md grew to 599 lines upstream, so the new
bound contract is compressed to keep the doc at the 600-line budget.

…dered tool

completeDeclarationName returned the tool name at the first "): Promise<"
hit without checking the rest of the signature, so "Promise<unknown>;
garbage" still counted as a rendered V1 declaration. The parameter list
now ends only at the ')' that balances the opening paren, and the return
type must hold generic depth positive to the stripped suffix — a '>' that
reaches zero mid-tail is surplus text, while '=>' arrows and nested
generics still parse.

The bracket scan still counted delimiters inside quoted literals — a
parameter type like { choice: ")" } made a valid declaration unreadable —
and the return-type check never verified the depth it left behind, so a
missing generic closer still credited the declaration. String and
template literals are now skipped with escape awareness in both scans,
and the return type must end at exactly the depth the stripped suffix
owns: early zero is surplus, a leftover depth is incomplete.

Skip line and block comments outside quoted type text so ordinary rendered field descriptions cannot change bracket or generic depth. Reject unterminated opaque regions and exercise comment-heavy declarations below the existing size bound.

Closing duplicate tracking after preserving and independently validating the complete change in integration commit f9b02c5ef9f08a49f0377354b6089fa0ab6b36d7 based on development revision 6da2774369aa32552e318e333902499683d053bc. All three changed files match source HEAD ce1fa40b2201e04364cc816ed71282c22520f78a byte for byte. The pinned Bun 1.4.3 parser/deferred regression run passed 93 tests; type, structure, materialized-file privacy and diff checks passed. Integration remains unmerged and requires its own CI and maintainer review. The source branch is retained.
