Summary

ocx ensure's Desktop cold start launched the macOS app through
open -b com.opencodex.desktop, so LaunchServices chose which registered
bundle to execute — while the production wiring reduced the durable
ownership record to the string "desktop" and discarded its installId.
A planted duplicate bundle claiming the same CFBundleIdentifier could be
selected and run in the real app's place on an ordinary Codex launch.

The launch now runs the explicit path the consented installation itself
registered as its Start-at-Login program:

  • the recorded ownership claim must still be desktop, and the app-local
    install-id must match the claim's installId;
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents/OpenCodex.plist must carry the shapes
auto-launch writes ([program] or [program, "--autostart"], matching
Program when present), resolving to an executable inside a real
*.app/Contents/MacOS bundle whose own CFBundleIdentifier is
    com.opencodex.desktop;
  • /usr/bin/open -g <bundle> --args --autostart runs that resolved path —
    the bundle identifier is never sent to LaunchServices;
  • absent, malformed, stale or mismatched evidence refuses the launch,
producing the existing "Open OpenCodex manually" guidance.

Known narrowing: a Desktop-owned install without a Start-at-Login
registration can no longer be auto-launched and gets that guidance instead
— the previously reachable bundle-id selection is what made the launch
unverifiable, and opening the app once restores the path.

Verification

  • bun test tests/cli/cli-ensure-desktop-cold-start.test.ts — 24 pass,
5 POSIX-only skips, including new cases that assert open receives the
registered bundle path, that -b/bundle-id is never invoked, and that
    install-id mismatch, missing/wrong-label registration, non-Desktop
programs, and identifier-mismatched bundles all refuse.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan,
    git diff --check — clean.
  • All launch inputs are dependency-injected (platform, run, home,
ownership), so the macOS branches are exercised on this Windows host
without a real LaunchServices database; no live macOS launch was
performed. Full suite deferred to CI per repo policy.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed (structure/gui-and-management-api.md documents the bound launch).
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • macOS cold starts now launch the Desktop app recorded by its login registration only when the installation can be verified. If the registration or app identity can’t be confirmed, the app won’t be launched.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how macOS selects the Desktop app during cold start.

…okup

The ensure cold start launched macOS Desktop with `open -b
com.opencodex.desktop`, letting LaunchServices pick any registered bundle
claiming the identifier while the durable ownership record's install id was
discarded at the wiring edge.

Launch only the path the consented installation itself registered as its
Start-at-Login program, and only while the app-local install id still matches
the recorded claim: resolve the OpenCodex LaunchAgent's ProgramArguments to an
executable inside a real app bundle, verify the bundle's own
CFBundleIdentifier, and `open` that path. A claim whose registration,
install-id, or executable evidence is absent, malformed or stale refuses the
launch instead of guessing. Desktop-claimed installs without a login
registration lose the automatic cold start and get the existing
open-manually guidance instead of an unverifiable launch.

📝 Walkthrough

On macOS, Desktop relaunch now requires verified Desktop ownership and a valid consented LaunchAgent registration. The launcher opens the validated bundle path instead of selecting a target by bundle identifier.

launchDesktopApp checks ownership, install ID, LaunchAgent registration, executable, and bundle identity before opening the resolved bundle path. Tests cover accepted registrations and refusal cases. The startup-safety documentation describes this path.

Desktop relaunch now opens only the consented bundle path. In an unusual malformed-registration case it could report a confusing timeout instead of the manual-open guidance. This is a narrow edge case, and a small guard is worth adding.

CI's Linux shard enforces X_OK where Windows ignores it; the fixture now
chmod 0755s the stub binary so the launch-binding cases exercise the same
accepted path on both platforms.
