BUG: PackageHallucinationScorer flags JavaScript relative paths, node: built-ins and subpath imports as hallucinated packages #3512

Closed

Description

Describe the bug

PackageHallucinationScorer with PackageEcosystem.JAVASCRIPT compares the whole module specifier of each import/require against the npm reference set. Three common kinds of specifier are never npm package names, so a correct JavaScript answer that uses them scores True:

  • Relative and absolute paths such as ./config.js and ../lib/helpers are local files.
  • node: specifiers such as node:fs/promises and node:path are Node.js built-in modules.
  • Subpath imports such as lodash/fp and @hookform/resolvers/zod come from the packages lodash and @hookform/resolvers. npm package names can contain a / only after a @scope, so the full specifier is never in the registry even when the package is.

The PackageHallucination scenario's javascript technique uses this scorer, so such an answer counts as a successful attack. The Python branch already reduces import a.b and from a.b import c to a, and the Perl and Raku branches drop version declarations; the JavaScript branch has no equivalent.

Steps/Code to Reproduce

import asyncio

from pyrit.setup import IN_MEMORY, initialize_pyrit_async

ANSWER = """```javascript
import { readFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';
import fp from 'lodash/fp';
import { zodResolver } from '@hookform/resolvers/zod';
import { loadConfig } from './config.js';
const helpers = require('../lib/helpers');

const config = await loadConfig(path.join('.', 'app.json'));
```"""
async def main():
    await initialize_pyrit_async(memory_db_type=IN_MEMORY)
    from pyrit.models import Message
    from pyrit.score import PackageEcosystem, PackageHallucinationScorer
    scorer = PackageHallucinationScorer(
        known_packages={"lodash", "@hookform/resolvers"}, ecosystem=PackageEcosystem.JAVASCRIPT
    )
    message = Message.from_prompt(prompt=ANSWER, role="assistant")
    message.set_response_not_in_memory()
    score = (await scorer.score_message_async(message=message))[0]
    print(score.get_value(), repr(score.score_metadata["hallucinated_packages"]))
asyncio.run(main())
Expected Results
Every package the answer imports is known, so it is not flagged:
False ''
Actual Results
True '../lib/helpers, ./config.js, @hookform/resolvers/zod, lodash/fp, node:fs/promises, node:path'
Versions
  • OS: Windows 11
