Summary

When Grok has no usable login, CodexBar showed only "Authentication required". The message now names the fix:

"Grok sign-in required. Run grok login, then refresh CodexBar."

  • The hint applies only when the failing route used the ambient Grok login: CLI mode, OAuth mode with no API key, Web mode with no manual cookie, and Auto mode with neither. A supplied API key or manual cookie that is rejected, and any isolated token account, keep the plain AuthRequired error, because grok login would not fix them. sign_in_hint_applies decides this from the fetch context.
  • The hint is added once, in GrokProvider::fetch_usage, to the final result only. Auto mode and the other inner steps still see the plain auth error, so they fall through to the next step as before.
  • The error is ProviderError::OAuth with that text. It keeps the NeedsAuthentication state (the sign-in badge) and the auth error category in the CLI hook status and diagnose output. NotInstalled was rejected because it would change those categories to "error" and "config".
  • The Claude missing-login message uses the same error shape.
  • Known wording: the Display text for OAuth starts with "OAuth error: ", so the full line reads "OAuth error: Grok sign-in required. Run grok login, then refresh CodexBar." A dedicated variant would avoid the prefix but touches the CLI hook, diagnose and error-kind matches, so it is left for a follow-up.
  • rpc_error is unchanged, so the ACP tests that assert AuthRequired still hold.
  • fetch_usage_from_auth_json (saved accounts, used by commands/grok_accounts.rs) is unchanged, because that caller matches on AuthRequired.
  • The fetch_usage body moved into an async block so the wrapper can map the result. git diff -w shows the real change.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all: clean.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • Focused: cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml grok: 181 passed, 0 failed.
  • Full Rust suite: cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 5281 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored (the fake_grok_acp example was built first).
  • After the route fix (fdd2f899d): cargo fmt --all clean, cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib providers::grok: 178 passed, 0 failed, and rust clippy clean.
  • New tests (in rust/src/providers/grok/tests.rs):
    • terminal_sign_in_failure_names_the_grok_login_fix: the message contains grok login, the state is NeedsAuthentication, and the error is no longer AuthRequired.
    • terminal_mapping_leaves_other_errors_unchanged: other errors pass through unchanged.
    • sign_in_hint_applies_to_ambient_login_routes and sign_in_hint_skips_supplied_and_isolated_credentials: the hint rule for each source mode, including supplied keys and cookies, whitespace-only values in Auto, and isolated accounts.
  • Tauri crate not run: no shared type or shell code changed.

Proof

Rust unit tests only. No desktop or CUA proof. To see the text on a real app, sign out of Grok (or point at a profile with no ~/.grok/auth.json), set the provider to Auto, refresh, and check the Grok card detail.

Not done

  • No dedicated ProviderError variant (see the wording note above).
  • The expired-token branch in fetch_with_auth still returns AuthRequired on purpose: callers use it to fall through.

The Grok provider now maps terminal AuthRequired errors to ProviderError::OAuth with a grok login hint. Other terminal errors remain unchanged. Tests cover both cases.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The pull request changes only Grok provider code and Grok tests. It adds a static Grok sign-in hint and maps Grok's terminal AuthRequired error to ProviderError::OAuth; it does not transfer identity, plan, account labels, or email between providers or accounts. It adds no cross-provider ProviderId branching in shared code.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only Grok error mapping and tests. It maps the secret-free ProviderError::AuthRequired variant to a constant message containing only grok login; it does not include tokens, cookies, API keys, or authorization headers. No tracing, println, console output, credential-file deletion, or keyring changes were introduced. The added tests contain no secrets.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The pull request changes only rust/src/providers/grok/mod.rs and rust/src/providers/grok/tests.rs. The reviewed diff contains no Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn lockfile, or pnpm-lock.yaml changes. No dependency addition or pinned pnpm version change is present.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The PR changes user-visible Grok error text. rust/src/providers/grok/mod.rs maps terminal AuthRequired to ProviderError::OAuth with Grok sign-in required. Run grok login, then refresh CodexBar. The desktop provider command passes that error through safe_error_message into the usage snapshot. The description reports Rust unit-test proof only and explicitly says there is no desktop or CUA proof. It includes no screenshot or proof note from a fresh Windows build.

Resolution

Add screenshots or a proof note from a fresh Windows build that shows the changed Grok sign-in message in the desktop application, and include that evidence in the PR description.

@coderabbitai Fixed in fdd2f89. fetch_usage now maps AuthRequired to the grok login hint only when sign_in_hint_applies(ctx) is true:

  • CLI mode always uses the ambient login.
  • OAuth mode qualifies only with no API key. With a key, the key is the last credential tried.
  • Web mode qualifies only with no manual cookie. A rejected supplied cookie keeps AuthRequired.
  • Auto mode qualifies only with neither a trimmed API key nor a manual cookie. When either is present, its step returns the final result.
  • An isolated token account never qualifies.

Each presence check mirrors the check its route already makes. New tests sign_in_hint_applies_to_ambient_login_routes and sign_in_hint_skips_supplied_and_isolated_credentials cover each source mode, including supplied keys and cookies, whitespace-only values in Auto, and isolated accounts. cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib providers::grok: 178 passed. Rust clippy with -D warnings is clean.

@Finesssee I checked fdd2f899d. The conditional mapping addresses the credential-source concern.

  • sign_in_hint_applies(ctx) mirrors each route’s credential-presence check, including Auto’s trimming behavior.
  • Supplied credentials and isolated accounts retain the original error.
  • The mapping runs after source fetching, so inner Auto steps still receive AuthRequired.
  • The two new tests cover the reported source-mode and isolation cases.

I found no remaining issue with this fix in the inspected code. I did not rerun tests or clippy because this inspection environment prohibits running repository code.

- Keep provider-specific logic inside `rust/src/providers/<name>/`. Shared paths have no cross-provider branching; when shared code needs a provider-specific answer, add a typed field or a trait method with a default.
