Summary

The Settings API key section read its keys once, when it mounted. If a key was saved or removed somewhere else (another window, or a write that landed in the keys file from outside the app), the section kept showing the old state until the Settings window was closed and reopened.

This change re-reads the keys in three cases:

  • Backend write. set_api_key and remove_api_key now emit a new api-keys-updated event with the canonical provider id, { "providerId": "..." }. The event never carries the key. Every window that shows the section re-reads its list.
  • Window focus. The section re-reads when the Settings window gains focus, or when its document becomes visible. This covers writes that cannot emit, such as a CLI or hand edit of the keys file.
  • Draft safety. The new re-read does not touch the open edit form or the draft text. Only the mount effect, which already existed, resets state.

Files changed:

  • Rust (commit a3188aa31): apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/events.rs (constant, payload struct, emit_api_keys_updated), commands/credentials.rs (the two commands emit after a successful write; the validation and save logic moved into write_api_key and remove_stored_api_key, which return the canonical id and take no AppHandle), commands/tests.rs (two existing tests now call the helpers).
  • Frontend (commit 8d2b8e247): apps/desktop-tauri/src/surfaces/settings/providers/ApiKeySection.tsx and a new ApiKeySection.test.tsx.

No new invoke command and no new locale strings. The proof router needed no change: set_api_key and remove_api_key are already inert actions, and the new event is not routed through it.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • Focused Tauri: events::tests::api_keys_updated_payload_names_the_provider_and_never_a_key and the commands::tests::command_inputs_* tests: 4 passed.
  • Full Tauri crate: cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 805 passed, 0 failed.
  • Full rust crate: cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 5279 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored (after cargo build --example fake_grok_acp). The rust crate is unchanged on this branch.
  • Frontend focused: ApiKeySection.test.tsx: 4 passed.
  • Frontend full: pnpm test -- --maxWorkers=4: 165 files, 1621 tests passed.
  • After the overlapping-reload fix (ed5537f5b): ApiKeySection.test.tsx 5 passed; pnpm exec vitest run --maxWorkers=4: 165 files, 1622 tests passed; tsc --noEmit clean.
  • pnpm run build: passed (pre-existing chunk-size warning).
  • pnpm proof:check: 45/45 scenarios passed (Chromium, mocked IPC).

New tests

  • events.rs: the payload serializes to {"providerId":"openrouter"} only, and the event name is api-keys-updated.
  • ApiKeySection.test.tsx (5 tests):
    • an api-keys-updated event re-reads the keys and shows the new state;
    • a window focus event re-reads the keys;
    • an open edit form keeps its draft ("sk-or-draft") across a re-read;
    • the listener is removed and focus is ignored after unmount;
    • overlapping reloads that finish out of order keep the newest result. The mount and refresh effects share a reload generation, so an older reload can't replace newer key data (ed5537f5b).

Proof

  • Automated only: the Rust and frontend unit tests above, plus the existing Settings proof scenarios (no regressions).
  • No proof:check scenario was added. The mocked bridge has no key-change state to drive a re-read, and its set_api_key / remove_api_key are inert, so a scenario would prove nothing new.

Not done

  • No desktop proof. This needs a rebuilt desktop binary with the Settings window open on the API key section. Then write a key through the other path (second window, or CLI/hand edit of the keys file, then focus Settings) and confirm the section updates without reopening. Use CUA for the window and the screenshot.
  • The CLI or hand edit is only picked up on focus or visibility change, not live. A file watcher was not added (no new dependency, and the rule was kept small).
  • Other sections that show stored credentials (manual cookies, token accounts) were not changed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • API key settings now refresh when keys are added or removed elsewhere, and when you return to the window or make it visible again.
    • Updates keep any open edit form and its draft intact.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Settings retain the latest API key information when multiple refreshes overlap.

📝 Walkthrough

Credential commands emit provider update events after successful API-key writes and removals. The settings API-key section refreshes its list after those events, window focus, or document visibility changes.

Changes: API-key synchronization

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The diff does not introduce a silo violation. ApiKeysUpdatedPayload sends only the canonical provider ID, never identity, plan, account label, email, or an API key. ApiKeySection filters provider metadata and saved keys by its own providerId, so reloads do not display another provider's data. The Rust changes add no matching on specific provider IDs in shared code.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

No new secret leak is introduced. The API key write path still uses ApiKeys::save, which serializes through the existing secure_file::write_string helper. UI responses remain masked by get_all_for_display, and api-keys-updated carries only the canonical provider ID. Added tests use masked or synthetic values and add no snapshot or logging output. The refactor keeps removal scoped to the app's existing api_keys.json; it does not touch another application's files or keyring entries.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

No dependency-related files changed in the reviewed range. The PR does not modify any Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn/pnpm lockfile, or the pnpm packageManager version. The base and head both pin pnpm@11.25.0.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The pull request changes visible Settings UI in apps/desktop-tauri/src/surfaces/settings/providers/ApiKeySection.tsx by adding reload behavior and event listeners. The supplied PR description reports automated tests only and explicitly states “No desktop proof”; it includes no screenshot or proof note from a fresh Windows build. The repository diff also contains no proof artifact or description update that addresses this requirement.

Resolution

Build the desktop app on Windows, verify the API key section refreshes after an external key change while retaining an open draft, and add screenshots or a proof note from that fresh Windows build to the PR description.

@coderabbitai Fixed in ed5537f. reload now takes a generation number from a useRef counter that the mount and refresh effects share. info, saved, error and loaded are applied only when the call is still the newest generation and its effect's signal is not stale. The new test keeps the newest reload when overlapping reloads finish out of order starts a focus reload and an api-keys-updated reload, resolves the newer one first (key set) and then the older one (no key), and checks that the key stays shown. With the generation check disabled, this test fails.

  • pnpm exec vitest run: 165 files, 1622 tests passed.
  • tsc --noEmit: clean.

@Finesssee Thanks for the fix in ed5537f5b. Based on your description, the shared generation counter addresses the out-of-order reload race and retains the stale-signal guard.

The regression test covers the key failure case: an older response must not overwrite the newer key state. Your reported 1,622 passing tests and clean type check support the fix. I have not independently verified the commit.
