Summary

Under the auto theme, the Settings window stayed dark on a light Windows
setting. Every native window is pinned to Dark (theme(Some(Dark)) in
shell/settings_window.rs, shell/flyout_window.rs, floatbar/window.rs, and
"theme": "Dark" in tauri.conf.json). WebView2 shares one profile across
windows, so prefers-color-scheme always reports dark, and useTheme could
never see a light OS setting.

This change reads the Windows app-theme setting directly:

  • Rust: new get_system_theme command (commands/system.rs). It reads
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize\AppsUseLightTheme
through winreg, the same way get_system_accent_color reads the accent
color. A non-zero value means "light". Zero, a missing value, or a read
error means "dark". The mapping is a pure function with unit tests.
  • Frontend: useTheme(preference, { followSystem }). When the preference
is auto, followSystem is set, and the Tauri bridge is present, the theme
comes from get_system_theme. It refreshes on window focus, on
codexbar:settings-updated, on visibilitychange, and every 30 s while the
window is visible. Outside Tauri it falls back to the media query.
  • App.tsx sets followSystem only for the Settings window
(isSettingsWindow()) and for the main window while it is in
surface.mode === "settings". The flyout, the float bar, and the main tray
panel keep the old media-query behavior, so nothing changes for them.
  • Native windows stay pinned Dark. The pin is profile-wide, so unpinning would
reintroduce the theme flip described in AGENTS.md.

Behavior

Preference Windows setting Settings window
Automatic Light Light (new)
Automatic Dark Dark
Light / Dark any as chosen (unchanged)

Known limits

  • The DWM caption (title bar) stays dark. It follows the pinned theme.
  • Scrollbars and native <select> popups stay dark. They follow the profile
    color scheme, which stays pinned.
  • The theme-change event is not used. Under the pinned theme ThemeChanged may
not fire, and I could not confirm the tao behavior from this checkout. A
30 s poll while visible, plus focus and settings-change refreshes, covers the
change. The worst-case delay after a Windows theme switch is 30 s while
    Settings is visible.
  • A Windows theme switch while Settings is hidden is picked up on the next
    focus or open.

Checks

At the head of this branch, after merging current main (which includes #1003):

  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean.
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 831 passed, 0 failed. This includes system_theme_is_honored_only_in_proof_mode, system_theme_ignores_unset_blank_and_invalid_values and the two apps_use_light_theme tests.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings on both manifests: exit 0. This branch doesn't change the rust/ crate.
  • pnpm exec vitest run: 164 files passed. tsc --noEmit: clean.
  • pnpm proof:check: 52/52 scenarios passed (Chromium, mocked IPC), including settings-auto-follows-windows-light and -dark.

Proof

  • Browser proof (Chromium, mocked IPC): as listed above. Screenshots are in
    apps/desktop-tauri/.proof/screens/settings-auto-follows-windows-{light,dark}.png
in the worktree. They are not committed.
  • Windows desktop proof: a fresh proof-mode debug build of the p083 integration tree, which contains this branch. Runs used isolated homes under %TEMP% on a secondary display, with the Settings theme set to auto. The real Windows setting was not touched.
    • CODEXBAR_PROOF_SYSTEM_THEME=light: get_system_theme returned "light", the Settings DOM had data-theme=light, and the body background was rgb(245,245,247). Screenshot taken. PASS
    • CODEXBAR_PROOF_SYSTEM_THEME=dark (control): "dark", data-theme=dark, background rgb(28,28,30). Screenshot taken. PASS
    • The native DWM caption stayed dark in both runs, as expected (known limit).
    • The foreground window didn't change when the app launched.
    • Screenshots stay on the proof machine.
  • Not covered: the flyout and float bar were not checked in the light run. Their code path is unchanged (followSystem is off for them). A real Windows light/dark switch was not tested, only the proof override.
  • Seen during the light run, not caused by this change: most sidebar provider icons have low contrast on the light background. That needs a check with an explicit light theme on main.

Proof override (CODEXBAR_PROOF_SYSTEM_THEME)

  • CODEXBAR_PROOF_SYSTEM_THEME=light|dark makes get_system_theme report that value. It is read once at startup by proof_harness::install_system_theme_from_env, the same way CODEXBAR_PROOF_WINDOW_ORIGIN is installed. It is honored only in proof mode. A value other than light or dark (case-insensitive, trimmed), or an unset or blank value, is ignored, and the app reads the OS setting.
  • The gate is the pure function proof_system_theme(proof_mode, raw) in proof_harness.rs. Unit tests: system_theme_is_honored_only_in_proof_mode and system_theme_ignores_unset_blank_and_invalid_values.
  • The override changes only the reported value. It does not change the Windows setting, so the DWM caption, scrollbars and <select> popups keep the pinned dark theme.
  • Documented in docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md, proof-mode section ("Report a fixed system theme").
  • No frontend invoke(...) command was added, so no proof router handler is needed.

Not in this PR

  • No ThemeChanged listener (see Known limits).
  • No change to DWM caption, scrollbar, or <select> theming.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Settings now follows the Windows app theme when the appearance preference is set to automatic, showing light or dark mode to match the system.
    • The app refreshes the system theme periodically and when the Settings window regains focus or settings change, so its appearance can stay in sync with Windows.
    • Explicit light and dark preferences continue to apply as selected. Automatic theme behavior on other surfaces remains unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a native system-theme command and lets Settings follow its light or dark result when the theme preference is automatic. Proof-mode overrides and mocked proof scenarios configure and check both theme values.

Changes: System theme following

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native theme source and bridge
apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/system.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/proof_harness.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/main.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src/lib/tauri.ts
The Tauri command uses a proof-mode override when available; otherwise, it maps the Windows app-theme setting to light or dark. Startup installs the override, and the bridge exposes the command to the frontend.
Settings theme synchronization
apps/desktop-tauri/src/hooks/useTheme.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/App.tsx, apps/desktop-tauri/src/hooks/useTheme.test.ts
Settings enables system following. In Tauri, automatic theme selection reads the shell theme and refreshes it on focus, visibility changes, settings updates, and visible-window polling. Other paths retain media-query behavior. Tests cover the selection and refresh behavior.
Proof theme configuration and checks
apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/params.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/router.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/install.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/router.test.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/scripts/proof-scenarios.json, apps/desktop-tauri/scripts/proof-check.mjs, docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md
Proof parameters and the mocked router accept a system theme, defaulting to dark. Scenarios cover automatic light and dark themes, and the proof check waits for the expected document theme. The Windows proof documentation describes the override and query parameter.

@coderabbitai Fixed in 5616e5c. followWindowsTheme now numbers each getSystemTheme() read and applies a result only when it is still the latest read and the hook hasn't been cleaned up. New test: does not let an older read that finishes last replace a newer one holds the first read open, lets a focus-triggered read apply light, then resolves the first read with dark and checks that the theme stays light. vitest (164 files) and tsc --noEmit pass.

@Finesssee Thanks for the fix in 5616e5c9f. The latest-read guard you described addresses the race. The regression test covers an older read completing after a newer read. Thanks for confirming that vitest and tsc --noEmit pass.
