Summary

Ports upstream CodexBar steipete#4595 (d82bddb55): Grok CLI billing over the ACP extension method _x.ai/billing. On Windows the ACP path is a fallback. The current billing path stays first.

  • Order for a bearer login: the credits proxy, then the grok.com gRPC-web billing, both unchanged. Only when both fail, the ACP fallback runs. A successful bearer answer never starts the CLI.
  • Missing or expired CLI login (new in this commit): when the ambient Grok CLI login cannot be loaded (no ~/.grok/auth.json or no Cli entry, which is NotInstalled or AuthRequired), the installed CLI is asked over ACP instead of failing before any CLI call. The CLI may hold its own valid session. The ACP answer has no CodexBar token, so it carries no account identity and no reset-credit lookup runs. Applies to SourceMode::Cli and to the auto-mode ambient Cli step. A malformed auth file (Parse) does not qualify.
  • If ACP also fails: the original friendly login error is returned for SourceMode::Cli. In auto mode the step yields nothing, so auto moves to its next source as before.
  • Scope of the fallback: only for the ambient Grok CLI login (kind == Cli, not isolated). Isolated token accounts, saved account rows and OAuth principals never reach it, including when their login is missing or expired. The token-account isolation rule from main still holds. Saved account rows are marked isolated, because their auth text may not be the account switched into ~/.grok.
  • ACP client (providers/grok/acp.rs): spawns grok agent stdio with CREATE_NO_WINDOW and stderr discarded. It sends initialize (protocolVersion "1", filesystem and terminal capabilities off) with a 4 s budget, then _x.ai/billing with params: {} with a 3 s budget. The method name goes out literally, with no \/ escape. Upstream budgets are kept. The child is killed after every call, including on timeout, and reaped within a 1 s grace period. These per-request budgets are the ACP deadline; the provider path has no separate FetchBudget, and the shell's provider timeout still applies around the whole fetch.
  • Parsing: the current nested config credits shape goes through the existing credits parser. A top-level subscription_tier names the plan. The older monthlyLimit / usage.totalUsed shape is still accepted. A prepaid balance counts without a quota percent. A result with neither a percent nor a balance is unavailable. A reset time alone is not usage.
  • Errors: -32601 means this CLI has no ACP billing. An auth message, or one mentioning grok login, is AuthRequired. The ACP error itself is never shown in place of the original error.
  • Bounds: lines over 256 KiB are rejected without buffering them. Non-JSON lines and notifications are skipped. Stdout EOF is an error.
  • Cost to note: with the Grok CLI installed but not logged in, each auto or Cli refresh now spawns grok agent stdio once (bounded by the budgets above). With the CLI absent, the spawn fails fast with NotInstalled.
  • docs/PROVIDERS.md gains a Grok section with the source order, the ACP limits, the missing or expired login case and the items not ported.

Windows differences and not ported

  • Upstream's team-principal diagnostic (a -32601 answer for a team login becomes an identity-only row with an unsupported-team message) is not ported. The Windows port has no team-identity path to hang it on, so that case shows the original error.
  • The ACP answer for a login-less CLI carries no email or team. Only the plan name and usage come through.
  • ACP child stderr is discarded rather than forwarded to logs.

Commands run

  • cargo fmt --all
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml grok: 161 passed, 0 failed (includes the new cli_fallback_tests cases)
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 5129 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml -- --skip invalid_apply_stops_the_running_server_and_keeps_the_saved_config: 754 passed, 0 failed, 1 filtered out. The skipped test binds 0.0.0.0 on this base and opens a Windows firewall dialog; its fix is in Keep the HTTP server test bound to loopback #955, not merged yet.

Test coverage for the change:

  • Parsing: current usage, reset and window; tier precedence; prepaid-only, string cents, empty wallet; legacy shape and clamping; missing and null fields; RPC error objects; reply matching.
  • Session over in-memory pipes: handshake, notification and non-JSON noise skipped, literal _x.ai/billing on the wire; timeout on initialize; timeout on billing after a good handshake; stdout closed; auth error during the handshake; oversized line rejected.
  • Child lifecycle: a real silent child (powershell on Windows, sleep elsewhere) times out, is stopped, and is confirmed reaped with try_wait. A missing binary is NotInstalled.
  • Bearer fallback ordering, with a counting fake CLI runner: bearer success makes zero CLI calls; bearer failure makes one; auth failure on the bearer path also falls back; a failing CLI keeps the bearer error; isolated, OAuth and saved-row principals make zero CLI calls.
  • Missing or expired login, with the same fake runner: a missing login (NotInstalled) and an expired login (AuthRequired, produced by the real parser from an expired expires_at) each get one CLI answer in SourceMode::Cli and in the auto Cli step; a failing CLI returns the original login error (Cli) or yields nothing (auto); an isolated fetch makes zero CLI calls; a malformed file (Parse) makes zero CLI calls; a missing OAuth login makes zero CLI calls.

No UI proof: no frontend file changed, and the change is backend-only. The ACP path needs a real grok CLI install, so it has not been run against one here. The parser, the fallback and the login-less path are covered by deterministic tests only.

Factory Agent added 2 commits October 21, 2026 12:25
When the bearer billing path fails for the ambient Grok CLI login, ask the installed grok agent stdio over ACP for _x.ai/billing. Isolated token accounts, saved account rows and OAuth principals never reach it.
Describe the Grok billing source order, the ACP fallback limits, its timeouts and the team-principal diagnostic that is not ported.

📝 Walkthrough

Grok billing keeps bearer billing as the primary path and adds ACP fallback for eligible ambient CLI credentials. ACP uses bounded JSON-RPC calls, supports current and legacy billing payloads, and terminates the CLI process. Saved-account contexts remain isolated.

Changes: Grok Billing Retrieval

Layer / File(s) Summary
ACP billing transport and parsing
rust/src/providers/grok/acp.rs, rust/src/providers/grok/acp_tests.rs, rust/src/providers/grok/credits_proxy.rs
The ACP module performs timed initialize and _x.ai/billing requests, limits input lines, maps RPC and process errors, and terminates the child process. Billing parsing supports nested credits payloads and legacy monthly-limit data. Tests cover parsing, transport, timeouts, stream limits, and process cleanup.
Bearer-first fallback and credential isolation
rust/src/providers/grok/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/grok/cli_fallback_tests.rs, docs/PROVIDERS.md
The provider tries bearer billing first and attempts ACP only for eligible, non-isolated CLI credentials. ACP failures preserve the original bearer or login error. Saved-account usage uses an isolated context. Tests cover fallback eligibility, login handling, error preservation, and auto-mode progression. Documentation describes the retrieval paths.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

PASS. The change stays within rust/src/providers/grok/ and adds no cross-provider ProviderId branching in shared code. ACP data is used only for Grok provider results. Normal ACP fallback is limited to the ambient GrokAuthKind::Cli path; OAuth and isolated contexts are rejected. Saved-account usage sets token_account_isolated: true, so it cannot use ambient ACP. Login-less ACP results explicitly omit email and organization, and the new tests verify saved-account isolation and absent identity.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The authoritative pull-request diff changes six documentation/Rust source and test files. It does not change any Cargo.toml, package.json, npm or yarn lockfile, or pnpm packageManager setting. Therefore, the check finds no unapproved dependency addition.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The pull request changes only Grok provider logic/tests and provider documentation. The authoritative diff contains no changes under apps/desktop-tauri/src (outside tests), rust/src/tray, the float bar, settings, or window chrome. Therefore the Windows screenshot/proof requirement is not triggered.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

The prior failure is confirmed by the reviewed head. acp.rs:273-281 copies the JSON-RPC error.message into ProviderError::Other without redaction. mod.rs:255-258 and mod.rs:282-284 interpolate that error into tracing::debug!. ProviderError::Other displays its string directly, while safe_error_message is the existing redaction helper and is not used here. A CLI error containing a bearer token, cookie, API key, or authorization header can therefore reach stderr and the plain-text log file.

Resolution

Remove the raw {acp_error} log interpolation, or pass the error through crate::logging::safe_error_message/SecretRedactor before logging. Preserve the original bearer or login error as the returned error. Add a regression test for a JSON-RPC error containing bearer-token, cookie, and API-key values and verify that emitted diagnostics contain none of them.

# Authentication

Grok supports several authentication methods, including interactive browser login, enterprise single sign-on (SSO), and headless CI/CD runners.

## Browser Login (Default)

On first launch, Grok opens your browser to authenticate with grok.com:

    grok

Grok stores credentials in `~/.grok/auth.json` and reuses them across sessions. Grok refreshes access tokens automatically in the background. When a token can't be refreshed, Grok prompts you to sign in again. Credentials without a server-provided expiry fall back to a 30-day lifetime.

### Credential storage

Tokens in `~/.grok/auth.json` (and MCP OAuth tokens in `~/.grok/mcp_credentials.json`) are written with owner-only permissions (`0600` on Unix). Anyone with filesystem access to those paths can use the credentials, so:

  * Prefer full-disk encryption (FileVault, BitLocker, LUKS, or equivalent).
  * Do not copy `auth.json` or `mcp_credentials.json` into shared directories, tickets, or chat.
  * On multi-user hosts, keep `$HOME` / `$GROK_HOME` private to your account.

### Re-authenticate

To switch accounts or resolve an authentication problem, run:

    grok login

Running `grok login` starts the sign-in flow again, replacing your cached session. By default, it opens your browser and signs in through SpaceXAI OAuth at `auth.x.ai`. Pass a flag to select a different flow:

Flag | Description
--- | ---
`--oauth` | Sign in through SpaceXAI OAuth at `auth.x.ai`. This is the default, so the flag is optional.
`--device-auth` (alias `--device-code`) | Sign in with the device-code flow for headless or remote environments.

To sign out, run `grok logout`. It takes no flags and clears your cached credentials.

## API Key

For CI/CD, automation, or environments without browser access, use an API key from console.x.ai:

    export XAI_API_KEY="xai-..."
    grok

Grok uses the API key as a fallback when no session token is active. If you have already signed in interactively, the stored session token takes precedence. To fall back to the API key, run `grok logout` or delete `~/.grok/auth.json`.

## OIDC (Customer SSO)

Authenticate developers through your own Identity Provider (IdP) -- such as Okta, Azure AD, or Auth0 -- instead of grok.com.

### 1. Register a public client in your IdP

  * Grant type: Authorization Code with PKCE (Proof Key for Code Exchange)
  * Redirect URI: `http://127.0.0.1/callback` -- a loopback address. Grok binds a random port at sign-in time, and most IdPs treat the loopback redirect as port-agnostic per RFC 8252.
  * No client secret. PKCE replaces it.

### 2. Configure the CLI

Via config file:

    # ~/.grok/config.toml
    [grok_com_config.oidc]
    issuer = "https://acme.okta.com"
    client_id = "0oa1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8i9"

Or via environment variables:

    export GROK_OIDC_ISSUER="https://acme.okta.com"
    export GROK_OIDC_CLIENT_ID="0oa1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8i9"

You can also override the API endpoint to point at your own proxy:

    export GROK_CLI_CHAT_PROXY_BASE_URL="https://grok-proxy.acme.com/v1"

### 3. Run `grok`

The CLI discovers endpoints via `{issuer}/.well-known/openid-configuration`, opens the IdP login page, and stores tokens in `~/.grok/auth.json`. Tokens auto-refresh silently via the stored `refresh_token`.

### Optional fields

Field | Default | Notes
--- | --- | ---
`scopes` | `["openid", "profile", "email", "offline_access", "api:access"]` | `offline_access` enables silent token refresh
`audience` | None | Required by some IdPs (e.g., Auth0)

## External Auth Provider

When browser-based login isn't possible -- for example, on sandboxed VMs, CI runners, or air-gapped networks -- delegate authentication to an external binary or script.

### How It Works

    `+--------------+ sh -c +------------------------+
    |     Grok     |-------------->|  your auth binary      |
    | | | |
    | reads |<-- stdout ----| prints token |
    | auth.json | | |
    |              |   (stderr)    |  prints status/URLs    |--> surfaced to user
    +--------------+ +------------------------+
    `

  1. Grok runs your command via `sh -c "<command>"`
  2. Your binary runs whatever auth flow it needs (SSO, device code, certificate exchange)
  3. stderr carries human-readable output, such as login URLs and status messages. Grok reads stderr and surfaces it to the user; in the TUI, it turns the first `https://` URL into a clickable sign-in link.
  4. stdout is captured by Grok and saved as the access token
  5. Exit 0 = success; exit non-zero = Grok falls back to interactive login

### The stdout / stderr Contract

Stream | What to print | Who sees it
--- | --- | ---
stdout | The token -- nothing else | Grok (parsed and stored in auth.json)
stderr | Login URLs, status messages, errors | The user (Grok reads stderr and shows the sign-in URL as a clickable link in the TUI)

Do not print anything to stdout except the token. No progress messages, no debug output. Grok reads stdout, trims surrounding whitespace, and parses the result as a token.

### stdout Token Format

Bare string -- just the raw token:

    `eyJhbGciOiJSUzI1NiIs...
    `

JSON -- with optional refresh token, expiry, and issuer:

    {"access_token": "eyJhbGciOi...", "refresh_token": "ref-tok", "expires_in": 3600, "issuer": "https://idp.example.com"}

Use JSON if your tokens expire and you want Grok to automatically re-run the binary before expiry.

JSON fields:

Field | Required | Meaning
--- | --- | ---
`access_token` | yes | Bearer token Grok sends to the xAI API
`refresh_token` | no | Stored for reference. Grok refreshes by re-running your binary, not with an OAuth refresh grant
`expires_in` | no | Token lifetime in seconds; enables proactive refresh before expiry
`issuer` | no | Identifies the token's issuer

### Configuration

Via config file:

    # ~/.grok/config.toml
    [auth]
    auth_provider_command = "/usr/local/bin/my-auth-provider"
auth_provider_label = "Acme Corp" # optional -- customizes the TUI login button
    auth_token_ttl = 3600               # optional -- token lifetime in seconds

Or via environment variables:

    export GROK_AUTH_PROVIDER_COMMAND="/usr/local/bin/my-auth-provider"
    export GROK_AUTH_PROVIDER_LABEL="Acme Corp"
    export GROK_AUTH_TOKEN_TTL=3600

### Token Refresh

Grok runs your binary on two different contracts, and `GROK_AUTH_EXPIRED` is how it tells them apart. Each run fully replaces the stored credential, so emit the same JSON fields (such as `issuer`) on every invocation, including refreshes.

  * `GROK_AUTH_EXPIRED=1` — a headless refresh. Grok is re-minting over a credential it already holds: a near-expiry rotation, or a token the server rejected. Nobody is watching. stdin is closed, your stderr is swallowed, and the binary is given a few seconds before it is killed. Mint silently o…[truncated]</excerpt>

If you've authenticated with `grok login`, you can use the stored credentials to call the CLI chat proxy directly via curl. The proxy requires specific headers that mirror what the grok CLI sends internally:

    curl -s -N -X POST "https://cli-chat-proxy.grok.com/v1/chat/completions" \
      -H "Content-Type: application/json" \

        "stream": true
      }'

Required headers:

Header | Required | Purpose
--- | --- | ---
`Authorization: Bearer <token>` | Yes | Session token from `~/.grok/auth.json` (set by `grok login`)
`X-XAI-Token-Auth: xai-grok-cli` | Yes | Tells the auth middleware to validate as a CLI session token
`x-grok-model-override: <model>` | Yes* | The proxy uses this header (not the JSON body) to route to the correct backend. *Can be omitted for `grok-build` which is on the default route, but always safe to include.

Streaming vs non-streaming:

Most models behind the proxy only support streaming. Always use `"stream": true` unless you know the model supports non-streaming.

Model | Non-streaming | Streaming
--- | --- | ---
`grok-build` | ✅ Supported | ✅ Supported

> Note: `auth.json` tokens expire after 7 days. Run `grok login` to refresh.

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; Grok Build is a terminal-based AI coding assistant from SpaceXAI. ... You can use it interactively as a full-screen TUI, run it headlessly for scripting and CI/CD, or integrate it into editors via the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). ... After you sign in, Grok stores your credentials in `~/.grok/auth.json`, where they persist across sessions. ... If you prefer API key authentication (e.g., for CI/CD or environments without a browser), set the `XAI_API_KEY` environment variable instead:
WSL users get the Linux binary automatically.

Verify the installation:

    grok --version

Update to the latest version at any time:

    grok update

To fetch a repository through Grove (NFS on macOS, FUSE on Linux) after `[clone] enabled = true` in Grove config:

    grok clone <url> [dir]

The default is a depth-1 checkout of the selected branch. Pass `--full-history` for a complete clone. Clone enablement is independent of session / `-w` Grove worktrees. Git credentials for the remote come from the Grove daemon, not from the grok.com sign-in below — see grok clone and Configuration reference.

## First Launch

Start Grok by running:

    grok

On first launch, Grok opens your browser to authenticate with grok.com. After you sign in, Grok stores your credentials in `~/.grok/auth.json`, where they persist across sessions. Grok refreshes your credentials automatically and prompts you to sign in again when they can no longer be renewed.

If you prefer API key authentication (e.g., for CI/CD or environments without a browser), set the `XAI_API_KEY` environment variable instead:

    export XAI_API_KEY="xai-..."
    grok

See Authentication for the full set of auth options including OIDC, external auth providers, and device code flow.

L200: ## Browser Login (Default)
L201:
L202: On first launch, Grok opens your browser to authenticate with grok.com:
L203:
L204: grok
L205:
L206: Grok stores credentials in `~/.grok/auth.json` and reuses them across sessions. Grok refreshes access tokens automatically in the background. When a token can't be refreshed, Grok prompts you to sign in again. Credentials without a server-provided expiry fall back to a 30-day lifetime.
L207: ### Credential storage
L208:
L209: Tokens in `~/.grok/auth.json` (and MCP OAuth tokens in `~/.grok/mcp_credentials.json`) are written with owner-only permissions (`0600` on Unix). Anyone with filesystem access to those paths can use the credentials, so:
L210:
L211: * Prefer full-disk encryption (FileVault, BitLocker, LUKS, or equivalent).
L212: * Do not copy `auth.json` or `mcp_credentials.json` into shared directories, tickets, or chat.
L213: * On multi-user hosts, keep `$HOME` / `$GROK_HOME` private to your account.
L214: ### Re-authenticate
L215:
L216: To switch accounts or resolve an authentication problem, run:
L217:
L218: grok login
L219:
L220: Running `grok login` starts the sign-in flow again, replacing your cached session. By default, it opens your browser and signs in through SpaceXAI OAuth at `auth.x.ai`. Pass a flag to select a different flow:
L221: Flag | Description
L222: --- | ---
L223: `--oauth` | Sign in through SpaceXAI OAuth at `auth.x.ai`. This is the default, so the flag is optional.
L224: `--device-auth` (alias `--device-code`) | Sign in with the device-code flow for headless or remote environments.
L225:
L226: To sign out, run `grok logout`. It takes no flags and clears your cached credentials.
L227:
L228: * * *
L229: ## API Key
L230:
L231: For CI/CD, automation, or environments without browser access, use an API key from 【72†console.x.ai†console.x.ai】:
L232:
L233: export XAI_API_KEY="xai-..."
L234: grok
L235:
L236: Grok uses the API key as a fallback when no session token is active. If you have already signed in interactively, the stored session token takes precedence. To fall back to the API key, run `grok logout` or delete `~/.grok/auth.json`.
L237:
L238: * * *
L239: ## OIDC (Customer SSO)
L240:
L241: Authenticate developers through your own Identity Provider (IdP) -- such as Okta, Azure AD, or Auth0 -- instead of grok.com.
L242: ### 1. Register a public client in your IdP
L243:
L244: * Grant type: Authorization Code with PKCE (Proof Key for Code Exchange)
L245: * Redirect URI: `http://127.0.0.1/callback` -- a loopback address. Grok binds a random port at sign-in time, and most IdPs treat the loopback redirect as port-agnostic per 【73†RFC 8252†tools.ietf.org】.
L246: * No client secret. PKCE replaces it.
L247: ### 2. Configure the CLI
L248:
L249: Via config file:
L250:
L251: # ~/.grok/config.toml
L252: [grok_com_config.oidc]
L253: issuer = "https://acme.okta.com"
L254: client_id = "0oa1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8i9"
L255:
L256: Or via environment variables:
L257:
L258: export GROK_OIDC_ISSUER="https://acme.okta.com"
L259: export GROK_OIDC_CLIENT_ID="0oa1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8i9"
L260:
L261: You can also override the API endpoint to point at your own proxy:
L262:
L263: export GROK_CLI_CHAT_PROXY_BASE_URL="https://grok-proxy.acme.com/v1"
L264: ### 3. Run `grok`
L265:
L266: The CLI discovers endpoints via `{issuer}/.well-known/openid-configuration`, opens the IdP login page, and stores tokens in `~/.grok/auth.json`. Tokens auto-refresh silently via the stored `refresh_token`.
L267:
L268: ### Optional fields
L269:
L270: Field | Default | Notes
L271: --- | --- | ---
L272: `scopes` | `["openid", "profile", "email", "offline_access…[truncated]</excerpt>

L1719: env_key = "OPENAI_API_KEY" # Env var(s) holding the API key (string or array; first set wins)

L1721: temperature = 0.7 # Sampling temperature (0.0-2.0)
L1722: top_p = 0.95 # Nucleus sampling parameter
L1723: max_completion_tokens = 8192 # Max tokens per response
L1724: context_window = 256000 # Total context window in tokens (for auto-compact)
L1725: Credential resolution order: `api_key` → `env_key` → cached `auth_provider` token (terminal: a cache miss resolves to no credential, never the session token) → session token → `XAI_API_KEY`. See 【113†Per-Model Auth Providers】.
L1726: The `context_window` parameter is used to calculate when auto-compact should trigger. If not specified, Grok falls back to built-in defaults for known models. To offer a choice of windows, set `context_windows = [256000, 500000]`. `context_window` stays the default (the first listed window when unset), and older clients ignore the list.
L1727: ### Overriding Built-in Models
L1728:
L1729: You can override specific fields of built-in models without redefining everything. Only specify the fields you want to change:
L1730:
L1731: # Override just the API key for a default model
L1732: [model.grok-build]
L1733: api_key = "my-api-key"
L1734:
L1735: # Override temperature and add a custom API key
L1736: [model.grok-4.20-0309-reasoning]
L1737: temperature = 0.5
L1738: api_key = "sk-custom"
L1739: How it works: When you override a built-in model, Grok starts with the default configuration (including the correct `base_url` from your `[endpoints]` setting), then applies only the fields you specify. Unspecified fields inherit from the default.
L1740:
L1741: Priority order:
L1742:
L1743: 1. Your config (`[model.*]`) — highest priority
L1744: 2. Prefetched models from remote `/v1/models`
L1745: 3. Hardcoded defaults — lowest priority
L1746: Web search model: Set `[models] web_search`, `GROK_WEB_SEARCH_MODEL`, or `--web-search-model` to point the `web_search` tool at a different model. The target endpoint must support the Responses API and web search.
L1747: > Overriding with a custom model: Setting `[models] web_search` alone is not enough if the model isn't already in the catalog (built-in defaults or `grok models` output). You also need a `[model.*]` entry so Grok knows how to reach it. Without both, web search is silently disabled.
L1748: >
L1749: > [models]
L1750: > web_search = "my-custom-model" # 1. tell web search which model to use
L1751: >
L1752: > [model.my-custom-model] # 2. tell Grok how to reach it
L1753: > model = "my-custom-model"
L1821: Combining with `[endpoints]` config: You can also set endpoints in `~/.grok/config.toml`:
L1822:
L1823: [endpoints]
L1824: models_base_url = "https://api.acme.com/v1"
L1825:
L1826: # Override just the API key for a specific model
L1827: [model.grok-build]
L1828: api_key = "my-api-key"
L1829:
L1830: Each `[model.*]` section inherits `base_url` from the `[endpoints]` config. `XAI_API_KEY` is still required. A per-model `api_key`/`env_key` authenticates that model's inference requests. The startup model-list fetch still uses `XAI_API_KEY`.
L1831: Auth behavior: When `models_base_url` is set, Grok authenticates the model-list request with `XAI_API_KE…[truncated]</excerpt>

Bind ACP billing to the selected principal.

When bearer billing fails for AmbientOAuth, fetch_auto selects the CLI entry and reaches this fallback. The fallback starts an ambient grok agent stdio process, but the Grok CLI billing handler uses its AuthManager credential. The default auth manager selects the OAuth-scoped entry from auth.json. The provider then labels the ACP result with the CLI entry's credentials.email and credentials.team_id.

If the OAuth and CLI entries represent different principals, this path can show the OAuth principal's usage and plan under the CLI principal's identity. Do not use the ACP fallback when the ambient auth file contains multiple principals, or omit email and team_id from ACP-sourced results unless the ACP credential is proven to match the selected entry.

The ACP billing fallback in the bearer-failure path around fetch_auto and
cli_billing.fetch must not associate results with the selected CLI entry unless
the ACP credential is verified to match it. Disable this fallback when the
ambient auth file contains multiple principals, or omit email and team_id from
ACP-sourced results when identity cannot be proven.

ACP fallback can show another principal's usage under the selected entry's identity.

The fallback runs for GrokAuthKind::Cli when bearer billing fails. grok agent stdio answers from its own default AuthManager credential. That credential may be the OAuth-scoped entry in auth.json, not the CLI entry whose credential just failed.

After this returns, fetch_with_auth labels the result with credentials.email and credentials.team_id from the CLI entry. If the entries belong to different principals, the card shows one principal's usage under another principal's identity.

Fix by omitting email and team_id for ACP-sourced results. Alternatively, skip the ACP fallback when the auth file holds more than one principal. The login-less path at Line 1098 already omits identity. Use the same approach here.

This repeats a prior review finding and still applies.

As per path instructions: "Flag any provider that reads, shows, or stores identity, plan, or email belonging to another provider." The same boundary applies to cross-principal identity within the provider.

Update the ACP fallback in the Grok CLI billing flow so ACP-sourced results omit
email and team_id metadata. Ensure fetch_with_auth does not label the bearer
returned by cli_billing.fetch() with the selected CLI entry’s identity, matching
the login-less path’s behavior. Preserve the existing original-error return when
the fallback fails.
