Branch: port/grok-zero-usage-weekly
Worktree: W:\wcb-wt\p083-grok-weekly

Commit: 95cfee32a (Keep Grok weekly credits window on zero-usage weeks)

Summary

When the Grok CLI answers over ACP with a wallet only (prepaid balance and billing
period, no quota percent), the answer is now checked by the same bounded grok.com
percent lookup that the credits proxy path already uses. The result:

  • A wire-published percent is adopted.
  • A validated zero (an active weekly period with omitted usage) is adopted as 0% used,
so the weekly Credits window stays on the card at 0%.
  • Omitted or unvalidated usage stays unknown. It is never shown as zero.
  • The ACP period, plan tier and prepaid balance are always kept from the ACP answer.
  • An expired login, a failed request, a non-auth error or a timeout keeps the wallet
    answer with usage unknown.

Upstream reference: CodexBar ad0c5679b (steipete#4679). Upstream applies resolvingUnknownUsage
to ACP wallet-only credits, removes the OAuth short-circuit, returns the proxy answer only
when a percent is present, and updates docs/grok.md. The Windows port does the same in
the ACP fallback. The docs change lives in docs/PROVIDERS.md, which is the Windows
provider reference, and it describes the new ACP rule.

Behavior and scope

  • rust/src/providers/grok/mod.rs:285: the ACP fallback result goes through
resolve_cli_unknown_usage instead of being returned as is. This runs only after the
bearer path fails for the ambient CLI login, as before (upstream Fix Grok CLI billing: use _x.ai/billing ACP extension method steipete/CodexBar#4595 ordering).
  • rust/src/providers/grok/credits_proxy.rs:280: resolve_cli_unknown_usage returns the
answer unchanged when it already has a percent or the credentials are expired. Otherwise
it makes one bounded grok.com call (PERCENT_RETRY_TIMEOUT, 6 seconds) and merges the
result with adopt_grpc_percent (credits_proxy.rs:211), which is the same merge the
    credits proxy uses.
  • Not enriched: the missing or expired login path (fetch_cli_acp_without_login). That
path has no bearer to send, so there is nothing to enrich with. The answer is shown with
    usage unknown, as before.
  • Isolated token accounts never reach ACP, so this change cannot read another account.

Tests added (6)

All in rust/src/providers/grok/cli_fallback_tests.rs, using mocked local endpoints and
synthetic data (example.com-style fixtures, fake tokens):

  • wallet_only_cli_answer_adopts_a_validated_zero_week: an active weekly period with
omitted usage becomes 0% used, and the prepaid balance and tier are kept.
  • wallet_only_cli_answer_adopts_a_wire_published_percent: a published 37% is adopted.
  • cli_answer_with_a_percent_is_never_enriched: no grok.com call (expect(0)).
  • failed_percent_enrichment_keeps_the_wallet_with_unknown_usage: a 500 keeps usage unknown.
  • expired_credentials_skip_percent_enrichment: no grok.com call (expect(0)).
  • acp_wallet_answer_is_enriched_on_the_fallback_path: the full fallback path, with the
CLI called once and the grok.com call made for both the bearer phase and the enrichment.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all: clean.
  • Focused cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib -- grok (after building
    fake_grok_acp): 185 passed, 0 failed.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • Tauri manifest clippy: not run. This change does not touch the Tauri crate or any shared
    type.
  • Full cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib: 5285 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored.

Proof plan

Unit tests cover the merge rules, the no-call rules, and the failure fallbacks. The grok.com
endpoints are fixed constants in code, so a desktop run cannot serve a synthetic zero week
offline. Desktop proof, not yet run:

  1. Rebuild the debug desktop binary (pnpm --dir apps/desktop-tauri run tauri:build:debug).
  2. Put a synthetic ~/.grok/auth.json in a temp home, and make the bearer path fail
(no network). Put a fake grok on PATH that answers agent stdio with a wallet-only
billing result (prepaid balance and a weekly period, no percent). This uses the
    fake_grok_acp pattern.
  3. Expect usage to be shown as unknown, not 0%, with the prepaid balance and tier kept.
The enrichment fails offline, so this is the unknown branch. Check the rendered
weekly row in the screenshots; the unit tests do not cover the UI.
  4. The validated-zero branch (0% shown on a zero week) is covered by the unit test above.
A live zero-week check needs a real account, which is out of scope here.
  5. Capture CUA screenshots of the Grok card. Attach them with the log line for the
    fallback.

Not run: the desktop proof and any push. Nothing was pushed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • CLI billing results with a prepaid balance but no usage percentage can now be updated with a reported percentage or a validated zero.
    • When valid credentials are available, a billing check runs for up to six seconds. If it fails or times out, usage remains unknown and the original billing period, plan, and balance are preserved.
    • Results that already include a usage percentage are unchanged.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the Grok provider guide to describe this behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

When CLI ACP billing returns unknown usage and credentials are active, GrokProvider makes a bounded grok.com billing request. It adopts a published percentage or validated zero while preserving the ACP period, plan, and balance. Otherwise, it returns the original answer. Tests and provider documentation cover this behavior.

Changes: Grok CLI Usage Enrichment

A zero-usage result may appear alongside an older ACP reset date. This is a bounded risk that merits owner awareness, but the current evidence does not establish a merge-blocking failure.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only Grok provider code, Grok tests, and provider documentation. The new enrichment sends the existing Grok credential to Grok's billing endpoint and adopts only usage percent/product usage. adopt_grpc_percent preserves the ACP period, subscription tier, and prepaid balance. It does not add identity, email, account labels, or cross-provider data. The isolated-account guard still blocks ACP fallback, and no shared-code ProviderId branching was added.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

PASS. The PR adds no credential-file or keyring mutation. The new token use in credits_proxy.rs formats an Authorization value only for the existing fetch_billing HTTP request. The new tracing line logs only the returned ProviderError; the error paths contain fixed status, parse, auth, timeout, or transport messages and do not include request headers or response bodies. The tests use synthetic token and stale-token values and add no snapshots or plaintext credential files. No cookie, API key, OAuth credential, or authorization header reaches a changed log, user-facing error, snapshot, or file.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The pull request changes only four Rust source/documentation files. The authoritative diff contains no Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn lockfile, pnpm lockfile, or packageManager pin changes. No unapproved dependency addition is present.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The PR changes visible Grok usage data. The new ACP path adopts 0% or a published percentage, and result_from_billing converts that value into the displayed rate window. The added test confirms the user-facing usage becomes 0%. The supplied PR description says “Desktop proof, not yet run” and provides only a planned procedure. It includes no screenshot or completed proof note from a fresh Windows build.

Resolution

Run a fresh Windows desktop build with the Grok zero-usage scenario, then add the resulting screenshots or a completed Windows proof note to the PR description. Clearly label the build and proof results.

Require an active, matching period before adopting an implicit zero.

parse_credits_response retains expired periods, and the ACP fallback accepts a period-only response when it includes a prepaid balance. resolve_cli_unknown_usage then adopts a successful gRPC result without checking the ACP period. The gRPC parser validates that its own period is active, but adopt_grpc_percent preserves the ACP resets_at and window_minutes. A current gRPC zero can therefore be paired with an expired ACP reset. Require an active ACP period that matches the period used to validate the implicit zero before adopting it.

@coderabbitai Thanks. Both findings:

  1. cli_fallback_tests.rs:590-624, success-path test (Trivial): added in ce96d16 as acp_wallet_answer_adopts_the_enriched_percent_on_the_fallback_path. The bearer-phase /billing call fails, and the enrichment /billing call returns 37%. The test asserts that each mock is hit exactly once, that the CLI runs once, and that the answer adopts 37% as wire-published and keeps the $12.50 wallet. Grok tests: 186 pass. Clippy is clean.

  2. credits_proxy.rs:295, period check before adopting an implicit zero (Minor): no change, on purpose, to keep upstream parity. Upstream GrokOAuthFetchStrategy.resolvingUnknownUsage (fix(grok): restore weekly Credits window on a zero-usage week steipete/CodexBar#4679) adopts the gRPC snapshot through completing(with: proxySnapshot). That call keeps the proxy or ACP resetsAt and windowMinutes whenever they are present, and takes only the percent from grok.com. Our adopt_grpc_percent does the same thing (..proxy.billing). It is not new in this PR: the credits-proxy path on main has used it since the original port. The implicit zero is already validated by the gRPC parser against grok.com's active current period, so a zero is never inferred from a stale grok.com period. Adding a stricter ACP-vs-gRPC period match only on this path would make the two bearer paths disagree, and it would drop valid zeros when the two surfaces round the period boundary differently. If upstream tightens this, we'll port it to both paths together.
