Commit: c2edb3ab1 (Skip offline Kiro background probes)

Summary

Automatic Kiro refreshes now check the Kiro usage host before they run kiro-cli.
When the host cannot be reached, the CLI is skipped and the last good Kiro usage is kept.
Without this check, an offline kiro-cli sign-in attempt can open browser tabs on every
automatic refresh.

  • Background refreshes make one unauthenticated HEAD request to the usage endpoint
before the CLI runs (before whoami). The endpoint comes from the CLI's profile ARN
region in the Kiro state database. Missing or unsupported region state falls back to
US East. The request has a 4 second timeout and is never cached.
  • Any HTTP response counts as reachable, including 403 or 500. Only a transport failure
(DNS, connect, timeout) skips the CLI.
  • A transport failure returns a network error, and Kiro now opts into the shared
last-good policy (retains_last_good_on_transport_failure). The previous usage stays
on screen. Sign-in and parse errors still replace it, as before.
  • Manual refreshes do not run the check. Authenticated GetUsageLimits enrichment is
    unchanged.

Upstream reference: CodexBar 49e758158 (steipete#4589). KiroCLIFetchStrategy gains a
checkConnectivity closure that runs only when ProviderInteractionContext.current == .background. KiroUsageLimitsAPI.ensureReachable is a HEAD request with a 4 second
timeout and no cache. Upstream also changes docs/kiro.md. This repo has no
docs/kiro.md, and docs/PROVIDERS.md does not describe refresh policy, so no doc
change is included.

Background versus user-initiated mapping

The Windows shell has no per-fetch flag, and FetchContext is built as a struct literal
in about 150 places, so adding a field was rejected. Instead:

  • rust/src/core/refresh_interaction.rs adds RefreshInteraction { UserInitiated, Background } (default UserInitiated), a tokio task-local, and
    scope_refresh_interaction.
  • apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/providers.rs:228 sets the interaction from
the existing refresh force flag. force = true (user actions, tray refresh,
settings and account actions, and menu open when refreshAllProvidersOnMenuOpen is
on) is user-initiated. force = false (auto-refresh timer, auto-resume, and
stale-gated launch, poll and menu-open refreshes) is background. Each spawned provider
    task is scoped at providers.rs:334.
  • rust/src/providers/kiro/mod.rs:107 runs the reachability check only when the scope is
background, after CLI discovery and before ensure_logged_in.

Why the force flag: it already separates "the user asked for this" from "the app is
refreshing on its own", and every automatic path already passes through it.

Behavior notes for reviewers

  • retains_last_good_on_transport_failure is a provider-level setting. It also applies
to a timeout or connect failure from a manual refresh, which then keeps last good
usage instead of showing an error. Parse and auth errors are not affected. This is
    deliberate but worth a look.

Tests added (7)

  • core::refresh_interaction: defaults_to_user_initiated_outside_a_scope,
    background_scope_is_visible_across_awaits_and_ends_with_the_scope
  • providers::kiro::usage_limits: reachability_endpoint_follows_the_cli_profile_region,
    reachability_endpoint_defaults_to_us_east_without_usable_region_state,
    transport_failure_is_a_transport_error_that_keeps_last_good (closed local port),
    any_http_response_counts_as_reachable (local mock returns 403)
  • providers::kiro::tests: transport_failures_keep_last_good_while_sign_in_failures_replace_it

All tests use synthetic data and local sockets only. No network.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all: clean.
  • Focused cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib -- kiro refresh_interaction:
44 passed, 0 failed (run before the last clippy-only test edit; the full run below
    covers it).
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
One test-only lint (let_underscore_must_use, then unused_io_amount) was fixed by
    asserting the read count.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • Full cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib (after building
    fake_grok_acp): 5286 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored.

Proof plan

Unit tests cover the endpoint choice, the transport-failure classification, and the
retain policy. They do not cover the tray or the real refresh timing. Desktop proof, not
yet run:

  1. Rebuild the debug desktop binary (pnpm --dir apps/desktop-tauri run tauri:build:debug).
  2. Use a fake Kiro state database (KIRO_DATA_DIR) with a synthetic profile ARN, and a
fake kiro-cli on PATH that appends each invocation to a log file. Do not use
CODEXBAR_SEED_USAGE_JSON here: a seeded provider is pinned and skipped by normal
refresh, so the automatic path would not run.
  3. With the network working, run a manual refresh so the fake CLI answers and last-good
Kiro usage exists. Note the log line count.
  4. Point the app proxy at an unused local port so the HEAD check fails with a transport
error. Wait for an automatic refresh. Expect no new kiro-cli line in the log, and
    the previous usage still shown.
  5. Trigger a manual refresh. Expect the CLI to run, which adds a log line.
  6. Capture CUA screenshots of the Kiro card before and after, plus the log file.

Not run: the desktop proof and any push. Nothing was pushed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Kiro usage refreshes now preserve the last successful usage data when temporary network failures occur.
    • Background Kiro refreshes check whether the usage service is reachable before proceeding. Manual refreshes continue without this check.
    • Authentication errors still replace stale usage data.

📝 Walkthrough

Provider refreshes now carry a user-initiated or background interaction scope. Background Kiro refreshes check usage-host reachability before running CLI commands. Kiro also declares last-good retention for transport failures.

Changes: Provider refresh interaction and Kiro behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and propagate refresh interaction
rust/src/core/refresh_interaction.rs, rust/src/core/mod.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/providers.rs
The core adds task-local RefreshInteraction state, which defaults to UserInitiated. Provider orchestration maps forced refreshes to UserInitiated and other refreshes to Background, then scopes each provider future with that value.
Gate Kiro refresh and classify failures
rust/src/providers/kiro/usage_limits.rs, rust/src/providers/kiro/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/kiro/tests.rs
Background Kiro refreshes read the profile ARN to select a usage endpoint and send a timed HEAD request before CLI commands. Any HTTP response counts as reachable; transport errors propagate. Kiro declares last-good retention for transport failures. Tests cover endpoint selection, reachability responses, and failure classification.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Skip offline Kiro background probes" is an imperative summary that matches the main change. The changeset adds a reachability check that skips Kiro CLI runs during background refreshes when the usage host is unreachable, and manual refreshes are unaffected. The title is specific and related to the main objective, so it passes the title check.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The change keeps provider data siloed. The new shared code carries only RefreshInteraction; it does not carry identity, plan, account labels, or email. The Kiro-specific reachability code reads only Kiro's profile ARN and sends an unauthenticated HEAD request with no token or cookies. The diff adds no ProviderId-specific branching in shared code; the Codex and Claude checks shown in providers.rs are pre-existing context.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

No secret-handling failure is introduced. The new background probe uses an unauthenticated HEAD request with no token or cookies, and it reads only the profile ARN through a read-only database connection. The added tests use synthetic profile data and temporary databases; they do not write credential files or keyring entries. The existing authenticated Kiro request and Authorization header are unchanged. New probe errors flow through the existing safe error-message path, and no added code logs or persists credentials.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The PR changes six Rust source files only. The authoritative diff contains no Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn lockfile, or pnpm-lock.yaml changes. Therefore, it adds no dependency and does not change the pinned pnpm packageManager version.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The change can affect visible Kiro usage state: background transport failures now preserve the last successful snapshot, which is emitted to the desktop UI. The available description says desktop proof was not run, but the description is truncated and the full text is unavailable. This check requires verifying whether the omitted text contains screenshots or a fresh-Windows-build proof note.

Resolution

Provide the complete pull request description, or add screenshots or a proof note from a fresh Windows build that covers the changed Kiro refresh behavior.

@coderabbitai Fixed in 45aa150. ensure_reachable_at now maps every connect failure from the Kiro reachability probe (including DNS failures) to the retainable ProviderError::Timeout, so a background refresh keeps the cached snapshot while offline. That matches upstream, which propagates probe transport failures for shared snapshot preservation. Non-connect failures stay ProviderError::Network, and other providers are unchanged. The closed-port test now asserts Timeout. Kiro lib tests (42) and rust clippy -D warnings pass.
