When the last message in a chat is a text message from somebody else, up to three short reply suggestions are shown above the input bar. Tapping one only puts it into the text field, so it can be changed before sending. The row disappears as soon as something is typed.

  • Generated with Apple's Foundation Models framework, entirely on the device, from the last few text messages. Nothing is sent to the server or anywhere else.
  • Only available on iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence and a supported language, can be turned off in Settings (Suggested replies)
  • Guided generation keeps the output to three replies, which are trimmed, deduplicated and limited in length

Notes

Testing

  • App and all extensions build for the simulator (Xcode 27.1)
  • New unit tests UnitSmartRepliesTest (prompt, filtering; not the model output itself)
  • The combined branch with all features also builds in Release for generic/platform=iOS (iPhone, iPad, Mac "Designed for iPad") and for watchOS hardware
  • Not yet tried by hand with a real account and device, hence the draft.

When the last message in a chat is a text message from somebody else,
up to three short reply suggestions are shown above the input bar.
Tapping one puts it into the text field, so it can still be changed
before sending. The row disappears as soon as something is typed.

The suggestions are generated with Apple's Foundation Models framework,
entirely on the device, from the last few text messages of the chat.
Nothing is sent to the server or anywhere else. The feature is only
available on iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence enabled and a supported
language, and can be turned off in Settings ("Suggested replies").
Guided generation keeps the output to three replies, which are then
trimmed, deduplicated and limited in length.
