Feeding track() one camera per call looked allowed, since partial image sets are supported, but cuVSLAM matches cameras only within a call. State the rule in the Odometry::Track and Python track() docs and the README, add a short TROUBLESHOOTING section with remedies, and fix skill docs that suggested a wider sync threshold or described image_jitter_threshold_ms as a tolerance between cameras. Also correct the timestamp source (images[0]) and the nonexistent is_valid in Odometry.track.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that images in each track() call must be captured within 1 ms of one another. Missing camera images are supported, but rotating cameras or camera groups across calls is not.
    • Added guidance for unsynchronized cameras, including hardware synchronization, dropping out-of-sync frame sets, or using separate trackers. Passing the timestamp check does not guarantee accurate tracking.
    • Clarified that synchronization thresholds group images but cannot synchronize free-running cameras, and that the jitter threshold applies to gaps between consecutive frames.
    • Updated troubleshooting guidance to reject frame sets at or beyond the synchronization threshold and clarified that tracking failure leaves world_from_rig unset.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update documentation and API comments about image synchronization in track() calls. They clarify supported partial image sets, camera correspondence, synchronization parameters, and guidance for handling unsynchronized cameras.

Changes: Camera synchronization guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track-call image requirements
README.md, libs/cuvslam/cuvslam2.h, python/cuvslam2.cpp, cuvslam-skills/cuvslam-troubleshoot/SKILL.md
The documentation states that images in each track() call must be captured within 1 ms of one another. It describes partial image sets, camera correspondence, and unsupported camera cycling. The Python return documentation says world_from_rig is None on tracking failure.
Synchronization parameters and frame sets
TROUBLESHOOTING.md, cuvslam-skills/cuvslam-troubleshoot/SKILL.md, cuvslam-skills/cuvslam-troubleshoot/commands/bag2edex.md, cuvslam-skills/cuvslam-troubleshoot/references/isaac-ros-visual-slam-usage.md
The parameter descriptions distinguish consecutive-frame gap warnings from timestamp grouping. The Isaac ROS synchronizer description specifies grouping by sync_matching_threshold_ms and notes that it cannot synchronize free-running cameras. Bag conversion guidance says saved frame sets must meet the 1 ms default threshold and advises against raising it. The troubleshooting guide lists unsupported inputs, stated tracking effects, and recommendations.

bag2edex keeps a frame set only when its timestamps differ by less
than sync_threshold_ns, and track() rejects images 1 ms or more
apart, so say so exactly. No contract or test backs the claim that
such input freezes, drifts or, with an IMU, diverges the pose, and
the outcome varies by odometry mode, so state only that tracking
accuracy is not guaranteed.

Document the sequencer timeout behavior.

image_jitter_threshold_ms is not warning-only. The Isaac ROS message sequencer uses it as a timeout. When the image gap exceeds the threshold, the sequencer flushes the buffered image batch to Track. The node also logs a warning. The threshold does not drop that batch, but the current wording omits this delivery behavior.

Suggested fix

Review asked the README to say unsynchronized cameras are not supported,
suggest separate trackers and link the TROUBLESHOOTING section; the sync
bullet now does that.

Review also asked whether the Isaac ROS defaults come from the node and
whether the skill can check them. They are the declare_parameter values in
release-4.3 visual_slam_node.cpp, except imu_frame, which defaults to ""
there, not imu. The reference now names that source and tells the skill to
check it for the user's release.

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff image_jitter_threshold_ms remark in SKILL.md: no change. In Isaac ROS release-4.3 the sequencer receives the threshold as an int64 (34) but compares nanosecond timestamps, so it passes every image to Track regardless; going over 34 ms only logs warnings (the node's UpdatePose and cuVSLAM's max_frame_delta_s).

Use “less than 1 ms” for the synchronization limit.

CheckImages rejects timestamp differences greater than or equal to 1 ms. Therefore, a frame set with exactly a 1 ms difference can follow the “within 1 ms” wording and still be rejected.
