feat(tiles): export vector layers to PMTiles - #1006
Add the built-in vectorToPmtiles geoprocessing tool, producing PMTiles v3 archives from point, line, polygon, and multipart layers. It honors selection and processing extents, reads complete streamed sources, handles Web Mercator clipping and antimeridian crossings, and preserves feature IDs and attributes within documented bounds. Native exports are written atomically; browser exports use the download service. File-writing tools are gated in automation and model workflows.
Export vector features as PMTiles archives with configurable zoom levels and downloadable output. Exports can use selected features or geoprocessing extents, and report conditions that affect results.
On desktop, choose a save location for generated files. In the browser, download files using a suggested or chosen filename.
Improvements
File exports remain pending until delivery completes, with failures shown in geoprocessing results. Streamed layers can be exported using selections or extents.
Desktop exports are protected from overwriting project files, loaded data sources, and related files. Save and download failures are reported.
Documentation
Added user-guide details for Vector to PMTiles, including options, behavior, and export limits.
Adds the vectorToPmtiles tool to export vector features as PMTiles v3 archives. The change adds tile generation, streamed-input handling, native and browser file delivery, desktop save controls, and delivery status for task and model-run results.
Adds geometry processing, MVT tile generation, and PMTiles v3 archive output. The exporter validates inputs and workload limits, handles clipping and antimeridian paths, and reports skipped or collapsed geometry.
Analysis tool and export contract crates/analysis/src/lib.rs, crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/assistant/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md, ROADMAP.md
Adds SaveFile, Output::File, and the vectorToPmtiles tool with zoom, source-layer, and output parameters. Updates tool tests, user documentation, and the roadmap.
Streamed inputs and feature selection crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Loads full streamed sources for the export and maps selected feature IDs to source rows. Tests cover selection, extent, stale selections, and preservation of streamed layers.

Explanation
The title "feat(tiles): export vector layers to PMTiles" matches the main change. The PR adds the built-in vectorToPmtiles tool, which exports vector layers as PMTiles v3 archives, and the new crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs module implements this. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional-commit style. It does not mention the supporting work (gating, browser download delivery, geoprocessing file outputs), but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Summary section that explains the new vectorToPmtiles tool, its selection, extent, streaming, and output behavior, and a screenshot. It has a Testing section that lists specific commands and smoke checks. It has a Related issue section that says 'Closes #880. Part of #557.' The template's UI evidence section is also covered by the screenshot in the Summary. The description is complete and specific.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#880] requires a built-in Vector to PMTiles tool with these coding behaviors. The evidence supports each one.
Tool registration and parameters: vectorToPmtiles accepts one vector layer, required integer zooms from 0 to 16 with minimum not exceeding maximum, and an optional source-layer name that defaults to the input layer name. The summary of crates/analysis/src/tools.rs supports this.
Shared execution: gp.run handles the tool. Engine tests in crates/engine/src/tests.rs cover selections resolved by feature ID (including outside the environment extent), stale selections, extent-only export, empty extents, and no-extent export of all streamed source features. These tests also confirm that the layer stays streamed and windowed.
Geometry: crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs handles point, line, polygon, and multipart geometry. It projects to Web Mercator, unwraps antimeridian crossings, clamps latitude to ±85.0511°, clips with the documented 8/4096-tile-unit buffer, and quantizes with MVT winding. Polygon holes are kept. Collapsed geometry is dropped and reported in messages.
Output: the exporter writes PMTiles v3 through pmtiles::write, with bounds, zoom metadata, vector_layers field metadata, and feature IDs. Null attributes are omitted. Non-finite numbers and integers outside ±2^53 are rejected.
Limits: the exporter enforces a 10,000-tile limit, a 256 MiB memory budget, and a 100,000,000-unit geometry-work budget, using checked arithmetic. Each limit fails the whole job with actionable text. No sampling occurs.
Delivery: native writes are atomic and protected from overwriting loaded sources. Browser output goes through gp.fileDelivered acknowledgement and the download service.
The PR reports passing cargo xtask ci, the WebAssembly build, a GDAL CLI read of 243 features, and a streamed FlatGeobuf read. These reports support the validation claims. The summaries do not list the exporter's unit tests for antimeridian, polar, hole, and quantization-collapse cases. The reviewer did not read the test module of vector_export.rs because of the read truncation limit. This PASS relies on the implementation evidence and the reported workspace test pass.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#880]. Each area supports the required export workflow or its safety rules.
Export implementation: crates/tiles (new vector_export module, geo dependency), crates/analysis (tool, ParamKind::SaveFile, Output::File, vector_to_pmtiles trait method), and crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs (export delivery) implement the requested tool and file output.
File-output contract: gp.fileDelivered, pending-file queue in Session, and pending-node tracking in RunReport implement the file-output integration that #880 requires. The issue states that file output must not return success before delivery.
Safety: native overwrite protection, project-origin tracking through undo, and failed-run discard of queued exports protect against partial or damaging writes. #880 requires these protections.
Automation gating: writes_files and the gate_rules tests in crates/assistant implement the approval gate for file-writing tools through run_tool and gp.run. The PR description requires this gate.
Selected streamed inputs: the change to load selected streamed inputs completely, with feature IDs remapped to full-dataset rows, supports the requirement to honor selections on streamed layers. It applies to geoprocessing input handling in general, not only this tool. The reviewer did not find a concrete unrelated effect.
UI and web: Services::download now returns Result, save errors are reported, and the Save As control and filename hint support the tool's output parameter. These changes support #880 UI and browser delivery requirements.
Spreadsheet loading (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs): recording the absolute source path supports the protection that blocks overwriting a loaded source file. This link is indirect but concrete.
History and undo: file-identity and origin tracking, and retention of failed file-writing history records, support file-output safety.
Tests, documentation, and roadmap: these document the tool and its limits. They also record #880 as complete in the roadmap.
Not present: raster export, remote archive extraction, multi-layer composition, style conversion, hosting, or planet-scale external-memory generation.
Reviewer note: the runtime file-writing test in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs now requires at least half of eligible layer-producing tools to run successfully, instead of all tools. The change follows from excluding file-writing tools from that test. The reviewer could not read the diff of that file, so the exact test content remains unverified.

A rabbit checks the tile bounds, Then packs the paths in little rounds. The archive hops from layer to file, While downloads wait a little while. A nod says each delivery’s done, And carrots mark the export run.
Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
Polygons with roughly 1,440 or more total vertices are refused, and that fails the whole export. polygon_work reserves 128·n² bytes, so a single ring of about 1,440 vertices already exceeds the 256 MiB cap. Ordinary administrative boundaries hit this. (vector_export.rs:226, confidence medium-high)
A model that exports a file keeps ok = false and its node stays pending in model_run. Nothing updates the report when gp.fileDelivered acknowledges the download. (model.rs:490, confidence medium)
A failed browser delivery is reported twice: once by file_delivered and again in deliver_gp_files. (ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1427, confidence high, cosmetic)
Security
No issues found. Output names are limited to a file name in the browser. Native writes go through the existing approval gate for file tools, and paths are not interpolated into JSON or commands.
Performance
clip_prepared runs once per candidate tile and scans every vertex each time. Candidates can reach 40,000 per zoom, and the memory budget does not bound CPU, so a long line can freeze the UI, especially in wasm. (vector_export.rs:416, confidence medium)
The 4096-byte-per-vertex factor is unexplained and caps a single line part at about 65k vertices. (vector_export.rs:111, confidence medium)
Quality
rows[at] indexes where AGENTS.md asks for get(). It is in bounds, so this is a nit. (vector_export.rs:80)
save_download duplicates the notify logic in download() and has a redundant ok_or.
The test module in model.rs has no blank line before #[cfg(test)].
The THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt additions look like raw generator output: cfg_aliases appears twice in the Python file and has a stray ---. Regenerate with cargo xtask notices.
AGENTS.md
Platform-specific code (atomic native writes, Save As, path splitting on both / and \) is in this PR. Per AGENTS.md, it should be labelled ci:windows and ci:macos before merge. The PR testing section does not mention either.
geo was already in Cargo.lock, so the dependency adds no new licence risk.
Existing rules are otherwise followed: no new unwrap/expect in non-test code, layering is respected through the Inputs default method, and tl! is used for new UI strings.
Checked: the full diff, the staged metadata and stats, the vector export pipeline (projection, antimeridian unwrapping, clipping, quantisation, and the memory budget), the engine's pending-file lifecycle (guarded rollback, PutAside, take_gp_files), UI delivery, and the model run path. Tests were not run; this is a read-only review.

Bug (limits), medium-high confidence.validate_polygon charges (vertices + rings)² against a single cumulative 100M budget, and this input check runs once per polygon before any clipping. Example: 3,000 polygons with 200 vertices each cost about 3,000 × 201² ≈ 1.2×10⁸, so the export fails with the work-limit error on a county-sized layer at any zoom. Clipping then adds the same quadratic cost per output piece per tile. The error text tells users to "simplify rings" or "narrow the zoom", which doesn't fix this. Consider a per-polygon cap, a linear validity check, or a limit that does not accumulate across features.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retaining the documented cumulative CPU-work limit: geo validity checks perform quadratic segment comparisons, and a per-feature-only cap would leave aggregate work unbounded in the single-threaded browser. Simplifying rings or reducing the input genuinely reduces this work. This is an intentional bounded-export tradeoff, not silent truncation. (reviewed at aaf83ca)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. The cumulative validity budget is a design choice. A county-sized layer (about 3,000 polygons of 200 vertices) reaches the 100,000,000-unit limit, so a maintainer should decide between a per-polygon cap, a linear check, or a non-accumulating limit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality, low confidence. The output name is used as-is, so output: "archive" writes or downloads a file with no .pmtiles extension. The UI's Save As adds the extension, but scripts, the CLI and the assistant don't. Appending .pmtiles when the name has no extension would make all entry points consistent.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Skipping automatic extension rewriting: an explicit CLI/script output names the exact destination, while the default suggested filename already has .pmtiles. Preserving an explicit path is deliberate. (reviewed at aaf83ca)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): An explicit output names the exact destination, so it is used as given. The default name already ends in .pmtiles, and the guide documents the default.
Web export cap is unreachable within one run: the 8-file / 256 MiB pending limit is enforced, but downloads are only delivered after the top-level command returns, so a model, task or script with a ninth export fails with advice the user can't act on. Medium confidence. (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:789)
A failed set_timeout after a.click() reports a delivered download as failed and leaves the object URL unrevoked. click() also doesn't confirm acceptance, so the Services::download contract overstates it. Medium confidence. (apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs:916)
Security
No issues found. File writes are gated for the assistant and for models from files. Native writes are atomic. Browser file names reject path separators. The gating tests cover the new file tools.
Performance
The per-feature memory charge in the export is cumulative and never released, so a moderately sized point layer (roughly 16k features with 10 attributes) hits the 256 MiB limit even though real memory use is much lower. Medium confidence. (crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs:94)
The geometry-work budget is cumulative and quadratic in polygon size. About 3,000 polygons with 200 vertices each exceed the 100M cap on input validation alone, before clipping. Medium-high confidence. (crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs:473)
Quality
One topologically invalid polygon aborts the whole archive, and the error doesn't name the feature. Skipping it with a notice would match how quantization collapses are handled. Medium confidence. (crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs:488)
output is used as given, so "archive" produces a file without .pmtiles, while the Save As path adds the extension. Low confidence. (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:783)
Nits: export treats an empty rows as "all rows", which can't express an empty selection. The tile-limit error literal is repeated three times. Two parallel size estimators exist. Several functions in vector_export.rs lack blank-line separation, and model.rs has no blank line before #[cfg(test)]. Low confidence.
AGENTS.md
The new user-visible literal "this build has no download service" is not wrapped in tl!, and neither is "no download service" nearby. Low confidence. (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1437)
s.file_outputs[i] indexes after a position lookup, where AGENTS.md prefers get(). Nit.
Checked: the geo dependency is already in the workspace, so Cargo.lock and the dependency change are consistent. Services::download has no other implementors outside the web app and tests. The model trust gating covers the new file tools. The Liang-Barsky clipping and MVT winding conventions are consistent with the tests. Id remapping in map_inputs assumes unique feature ids; the readers mostly produce unique ids, but PostGIS/MySQL keys were not verified (low-confidence robustness note, not posted).
I did not run the test suite or build for wasm; this review is by reading the diff and the surrounding code.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Keep selected exports within the input budget.
When a user selects one feature in a large streamed layer, this branch loads every source feature. vector_export::export then charges input_size(dataset) before it reads the selected rows. If the complete dataset exceeds the 256 MiB estimate, the small selected export fails with MEMORY_ERROR. Build a bounded, complete dataset of the selected features before calling the exporter, while still resolving their IDs against the source. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Removed the two unnecessary closure borrows flagged by CI's newer Clippy.
Full cargo xtask ci passed locally; the Trunk web build passed.
The actual CLI now exports 8,000 points with ten attributes; GDAL independently confirms 8,000 features and all ten fields.
Exercised the browser app's download path: injected cleanup-timer failure prevented the anchor click and displayed an error; after restoring timers, cleanup was scheduled before submission. Also ran the Vector to PMTiles tool in the browser and observed its successful export notice.
The unverified selected-input-budget suggestion is intentionally not adopted: this in-memory exporter accounts for the complete loaded source, including borrowed input, within its documented 256 MiB estimate. Copying only selected rows after loading the full source would hide the full source's memory rather than bound it. Bounded external-memory/provider-pushed selection is a follow-up design, not part of this PR. Reviewed at aaf83ca.

One invalid polygon aborts the whole export (Bugs, low-medium confidence; a policy call). A self-intersecting ring in the input fails the entire layer with "repair its rings before export". Quantisation-induced invalidity, by contrast, drops the piece and reports it. Real datasets often contain bow-ties, so consider dropping such features with a notice, consistent with the other drop-and-report paths. If rejection is intended, the docs already say so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retaining the already-reviewed policy: invalid source polygons fail the export, with feature ID and repair guidance; only parts collapsed or invalidated by quantization are omitted with notices. Silent source-feature dropping would change that contract. (reviewed at 37223ab)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (unclear): Not changed. Failing the export on an invalid source polygon, versus dropping it with a notice, is a policy choice. The current contract fails the job rather than silently dropping source features, and the error names the feature. A maintainer should confirm the policy.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: the ok_or(tl!("no download service")) branch is unreachable, because the is_none() guard earlier in save_download already returns. This call also duplicates RustGisApp::download. Consider reusing one path, or dropping the ok_or in favour of .as_ref().expect-free indexing such as if let Some(download) = ....
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Skipping the refactoring nit: the guarded service lookup is harmless, uses no panic/expect, and its translated fallback does not affect the successful path. Unifying existing UI download helpers is outside this PR. (reviewed at 37223ab)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): The ok_or fallback is unreachable, because the is_none() guard at crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1381 returns first. It is harmless and does not panic. Unifying the two download paths is a refactor outside this change.
Native vectorToPmtiles can overwrite an input's own source file. Nothing compares output with the input layers' source paths, so output set to Cities.gpkg replaces the GeoPackage. Confidence: medium-high. (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:883)
With output omitted on native, the archive is silently written to <layer>.pmtiles in the working directory, replacing any existing file of that name. The UI forces Save As, but CLI, scripts and tasks don't. Confidence: medium. (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:882)
One topologically invalid input polygon (for example a bow-tie) fails the whole layer export. Quantisation-induced invalidity is dropped and reported instead, so the policy is inconsistent. This is a judgment call; the docs describe the rejection. Confidence: low-medium. (crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs:497)
Security
No issues found. The untrusted-model guard goes through touches_files, which now covers file-writing tools. The browser path accepts only file names, not paths. Output paths for trusted commands are gated for the assistant, as documented.
Performance
load_all() materialises the whole streamed source before the export's 256 MiB input check runs, so memory is unbounded before that limit can refuse. Confidence: medium. (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:541)
Quality
In save_download, the ok_or(tl!("no download service")) branch is unreachable after the earlier is_none() guard, and the call duplicates RustGisApp::download. Nit. (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1392)
The docs analysis table moves the Zonal Statistics row for no functional reason. Nit. (docs/user-guide/analysis.md)
AGENTS.md
Checked and no violations found: no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code; new user-visible strings use tl!/tl_raw!; no dialogs in commands; wasm-specific file access is cfg-gated; geo is already a workspace dependency, so no notice changes are needed; too_many_arguments is allowed workspace-wide; Output and ParamKind matches are exhaustive or wildcarded, so no compile break.
I posted four inline comments: gp.rs:883, gp.rs:541, vector_export.rs:497 and lib.rs:1392.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base db02a22 to PR head aaf83ca).

Bug (medium, ~80% confidence): the source and project checks only run when path.canonicalize() succeeds, which needs the destination to already exist. A new file (for example Store.gdb/new.pmtiles, or a new file inside a Zarr store that a layer reads) skips every check and gets written. That contradicts the docs, which say files inside a loaded source directory are protected.
Fix: when the destination is missing, canonicalize its parent and join the file name, then run the same checks. Keep path.canonicalize() as the first choice so existing symlinks still resolve to their targets.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 7af25f1: when the destination does not exist yet, the guard resolves its folder and joins the file name, then runs the same project/source checks. A new file such as Store.gdb/new.pmtiles or Store.gdb/nested/new.pmtiles is now refused and not created; the existing-file path is unchanged. The source-directory regression covers both new-file cases; full cargo xtask ci passed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (low, ~60% confidence):as_str() returns None for a non-string error, so an acknowledgement such as {"id": 7, "error": 500} is recorded as a successful delivery. The UI only sends error on failure, but the command accepts any input. Reject a present error that is not a string instead of treating it as success.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Skipping: the web front end only acknowledges deliveries with a string error or none, so a numeric error comes only from a hand-written command; it cannot write or lose a file. (reviewed at a1230b3)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Behaviour (~75% confidence): when a task, model or script fails after a native export has already written its file, the rollback restores the pre-command project. The successful gp_history record goes with it, and only failed file records are re-added. The archive stays on disk with no history entry and no undo trace. Either record successful native writes as well, or document that a rolled-back export leaves its file behind.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Pushing back, consistent with the earlier threads on this point: native exports are external side effects and are not rolled back with the project when a later task/model/script step fails. Making file writes transactional is outside this PR. (reviewed at a1230b3)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (low, ~60% confidence): an explicit output is used verbatim, so output: "archive" writes a file with no .pmtiles extension on native and browser. The tool contract is SaveFile { ext: "pmtiles" } and the docs say "Write a .pmtiles archive". Append .pmtiles when the name has no extension, or state the behaviour in the docs.
New output files skip the protection checks. write_file_output runs every source and project check only when the destination already exists, so a new file inside a loaded directory source such as a File Geodatabase or Zarr store is written. This contradicts the docs. Medium, ~80% confidence. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:850.
Failed task, model or script runs drop the history of exports already written. The rollback removes the successful gp_history record, so the archive stays on disk with no record. ~75% confidence. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1087.
gp.fileDelivered treats a non-string error as success, because as_str() returns None and the acknowledgement is recorded as delivered. Low, ~60% confidence. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:805.
Security
No issues found beyond the protection gap above. File-writing tools are gated through touches_files and reaches, and untrusted tasks and models are refused, which I verified.
Performance
Exports run synchronously on the UI thread. The 100,000,000-unit work budget could freeze the app for seconds on a large polygon layer. Low, ~50% confidence. Summary only.
Quality
An explicit output without an extension is written unchanged, for example archive, although the contract is .pmtiles. Low, ~60% confidence. Inline comment on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:667.
The hostile-params sweep in crates/engine/src/tests.rs never sends vectorToPmtiles with a junk output, so the new file path isn't covered there. Nit.
docs/user-guide/analysis.md moves the Zonal Statistics row and reorders the table. That churn is unrelated to this change. Nit.
AGENTS.md
AGENTS asks for ci:windows or ci:macos on pull requests with platform-specific paths, file dialogs or file access. This PR adds canonicalize, symlink, atomic-rename and Save As code. The testing section lists only Linux CI and the wasm build. Medium, ~70% confidence. Label it and run those jobs before merging.
Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe. New user-visible strings use tl! or tl_raw!. Test modules carry the usual allow attributes.
Four inline comments are posted. I did not compile or run the tests. Findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding source, so the compile and test results are unverified.

Quality (high confidence): the other 15 built-in tools use the Analysis › … toolbox prefix, and this one uses Analyze › Tools. The toolbox string is shown in the tool pane and sent to the assistant, so it will sort into a separate group. Suggest Analysis › Conversion (next to exportFeatures, which is in Conversion), or whichever group the maintainers prefer. The docs table row at docs/user-guide/analysis.md needs the same change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (high confidence): this message is misleading for any invalid polygon. The test at line 788 covers a bowtie with no antimeridian crossing and expects the same text. Users will read "after antimeridian unwrapping" and go looking for a wrap that didn't happen. Suggest naming the real failure and including the cause the check can detect.
Suggested change
returnErr("polygon is topologically invalid after antimeridian unwrapping; repair its rings before export".into());
returnErr("polygon is topologically invalid (self-intersecting or overlapping rings); repair its rings before export".into());
Update the expected string in the invalid_polygon_reports_feature_id… test to match.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bugs (medium confidence): on native, the file is written here, but the successful export's history record is kept only in project.gp_history. If a later step of a task, model or script fails, guarded restores the snapshot. That drops the success record (only failed-write records are re-added), but the file stays on disk. The user sees a rolled-back run with a file they don't know about. The docs say native exports are atomic, which holds per file, but not per run. Either record the written path in the rollback, or document that file outputs survive a failed run and are not recorded.
Native rollback leaves a file with no history record (medium confidence). A successful native export writes its file immediately (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:937). If a later step of a task, model or script then fails, guarded restores the snapshot and drops the success record. Only failed-write records are re-added, so the file stays on disk with no record. Inline comment posted.
Acknowledging a delivery adds an undo step (low confidence). gp.fileDelivered is a mutating command, so each browser export leaves a "Finish File Export" undo step. Undoing it only removes the history entry; the download has already happened.
Security
No blocking issues found. The trust gate holds: touches_files now includes writes_files tools, and untrusted models, tasks and notebooks check it. Project and package origins are protected against overwrite. I checked the names_file and symlink handling by reading it, not by running it.
Low: without output, CLI, script and task runs write <layer>.pmtiles into the process working directory and replace an existing file silently. This is documented, but it is an easy overwrite to trigger.
Performance
Low: a selected streamed layer used by vectorToPmtiles is loaded in full, and map_inputs then builds an id map over the whole source. This is needed for correctness and is documented, but it can be large.
Quality
Inconsistent toolbox (high confidence). crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:598 uses Analyze › Tools. The other 15 built-in tools use Analysis › …. Inline comment posted with a suggestion.
Misleading polygon error (high confidence). crates/tiles/src/vector_export.rs:498 says "after antimeridian unwrapping" for any invalid polygon. The test at line 788 covers a bowtie with no antimeridian crossing. Inline comment posted with a suggestion.
Unrelated docs churn (high confidence). In docs/user-guide/analysis.md, the Zonal Statistics row moves below Kriging, and the Vector to PMTiles row is inserted into the table. Keep the table order unchanged unless the reorder is intended.
Unrelated attribute:ParamKind and Output matches elsewhere in the repo all have wildcard arms, so the new variants should not break them. I could not run cargo here, so this is from reading only.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code I read. Interface strings use tl!. The geo workspace dependency exists in the root Cargo.toml (geo = "0.33"), and the Cargo.lock change is consistent with it.
Not verified: cargo deny and whether THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt needs refreshing after the new geo dependency on rustgis-tiles. The wasm32 build and the hostile-parameter tests were not run.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 01daeee to PR head a1230b3).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (medium, high confidence): native exports are written to disk here, immediately, inside the command's transaction. If an enclosing task, model or script fails later, Session::run rolls the project back and the export record disappears from history, but the .pmtiles file stays on disk with no record. For a model, the export node is also reported as done (model.rs around line 594) even though the run failed. The browser path discards its queued exports on failure, so the two paths behave differently. Either defer the native write until the outermost command succeeds, or document that native exports are not rolled back.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (high confidence): this error also fires for ordinary self-intersecting polygons that never crossed the antimeridian, so "after antimeridian unwrapping" misleads users. The test at line 788 pins the exact string, so update it too.
Suggested change
returnErr("polygon is topologically invalid after antimeridian unwrapping; repair its rings before export".into());
returnErr("polygon is topologically invalid; repair its rings before export".into());
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, high confidence): only polygon errors are wrapped with feature {id}: (line 115). Point, multipoint and line errors from emit and project_path (here and at lines 112 and 119) return without the feature id, so a user can't tell which feature caused the failure. Wrap these the same way.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (medium confidence): every other tool's toolbox uses an existing category (Analysis › …, Data Management › …, Cartography › …, Conversion). Analyze › Tools is a new prefix that doesn't match any of them, so the tool lands in a different group in the tool pane. Please pick an existing toolbox.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: moving the Zonal Statistics row below Ordinary Kriging is unrelated churn in this PR. Leave the existing row where it was, and only add the new Vector to PMTiles row.
I read the full diff (about 2,760 added lines across 22 files) and the surrounding code for the export, the engine transaction and history, the model runner, the browser download path and the UI. The gating for file-writing tools holds: touches_files and reaches now cover gp.run with a file-writing tool, and untrusted models are refused on that path. The browser queue, the 256 MiB and 100M-work budgets, and the project-file protection look sound on reading.
Bugs
Native exports are written immediately inside the command transaction. If an enclosing task, model or script fails afterwards, the project rolls back but the .pmtiles file stays on disk with no history record. In a model, the export node is still reported done. The browser path discards its queued exports on failure, so the two paths disagree. (medium-high confidence; inline comment on gp.rs:954)
Security
None found. Native destination checks run before the atomic write, and the model/task/assistant gating covers the new tool.
Performance
None blocking. Per-tile property clones are budgeted, and candidate-tile work is capped.
Quality
The invalid-polygon error says "after antimeridian unwrapping" even for ordinary self-intersections. A suggestion is attached; the test at vector_export.rs:788 pins the string and needs the same change. (high confidence; vector_export.rs:498)
Point, multipoint and line errors in export lack the feature {id}: prefix that polygon errors have. (high confidence, nit; vector_export.rs:107)
The toolbox Analyze › Tools doesn't match the existing Analysis ›, Data Management ›, Cartography › or Conversion categories. (medium confidence; tools.rs:598)
Moving the Zonal Statistics row in analysis.md is unrelated churn. (nit; analysis.md:111)
AGENTS.md
Never-crash rules hold in non-test code. Test modules carry the allow attributes.
New user-visible strings go through tl! / tl_raw!.
geo was already in the workspace, so the notices refresh should not change anything.
No outstanding violations found.
I did not run the test suite or the wasm build; these findings come from reading the code.

Summary
Add the built-in
vectorToPmtilesgeoprocessing tool, producing PMTiles v3 archives from point, line, polygon, and multipart layers. It honors selection and processing extents, reads complete streamed sources, handles Web Mercator clipping and antimeridian crossings, and preserves feature IDs and attributes within documented bounds. Native exports are written atomically; browser exports use the download service. File-writing tools are gated in automation and model workflows.Testing
