Summary

  • Adds option to delete a layer/maptile already added in the addService dialog
  • Improve dialog width consistency: issue confirmed in the web version, where the scrollbar appears too centered in the view, instead of beside it. This seems to vary depending on which service we are retrieving from.
image

Testing

  • Tested manually, ran clippy, ran rustfmt
  • Adds smoke test to verify the new "Remove" button.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Add or remove listed map and tile layers directly from the service dialog. Layers already present in the current map show a Remove option; layers not present show Add.
    • If removing a layer fails, the dialog displays an error message.

The service dialog now shows Add or Remove for eligible map and tile layers. It runs the corresponding removal command and displays errors. A smoke test covers adding and removing a WMS layer.

The dialog checks for an exact title match in map layers, then tiles, to choose Remove or Add. Removal errors appear in the dialog. The smoke test checks the controls and tile state before adding, after adding, and after removing layer “A”.

The new Remove button can delete the wrong layer or tile. This happens when a service layer shares a name with an existing layer, or when several service tiles have been added. Undo may recover them, but fix the matching and the tile targeting before merging.

Bugs

  • The new Remove button matches existing layers by name alone (layer.name == title, and t.name == title for tiles). It can remove a layer this dialog never added, such as a user's own "Roads" layer when a WMS listing also has "Roads". A map layer also takes precedence over a same-named tile, and an entry with neither title nor name matches any empty-named layer. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:905.

Security

  • No findings.

Performance

  • Each visible row scans all map layers and tiles every frame, up to 500 rows (SHOWN_LAYERS). This is fine for typical projects but grows with map size. Confidence: low. Caching the match per frame, or building a title-to-id map once, would fix it.

Quality

  • Nit: the two already_added lookups could be one helper that returns (command, params), which would make the row closure shorter.
  • Nit: remove is typed Option<(&str, Value)>, but the only values are &'static str. Confidence: low.

Test coverage

  • a_service_layer_added_here_shows_remove_and_removes_it covers only the happy path, so it can't catch the name-collision bug. It also uses a bare query_by_label("Remove"), which could match a Remove button elsewhere in the UI. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs:1643.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant as far as I checked. Text is wrapped in tl!, there are no unwrap/expect calls in non-test code (the test uses unwrap, which is allowed), there is no unsafe, and the commands are used through app.run. I didn't verify cargo xtask ci, the layering check, or whether app.run invalidates the map after layer.remove.

Code review

I read the full diff (2 files, about 200 changed lines) and the code it calls: service.rs, service_group.rs, sources.rs, ogc.rs, and the map.removeTiles and layer.remove commands. I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so compile and test results are unverified.

Bugs

  • Feature-layer Remove can delete the wrong layer. added_from_listing matches downloaded features with source.starts_with(url), so a layer whose address merely extends this one also matches. For WFS, typename=roads_2 matches the roads row, and Remove deletes the wrong layer. Confidence: medium (about 0.6). Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:709 with a suggested exact-or-boundary match.

Security

  • Nothing found. The new code has no unwrap, no indexing and no unsafe, and the removal only goes through existing commands.

Performance

  • Per-frame lookup on every row. added_from_listing runs for each of up to 500 rows on every repaint, scanning all layers and tiles. Confidence: low (a nit). Inline comment posted at dialogs.rs:936.

Quality

  • Fixed 560 px width. This replaces ui.available_width() and can overflow narrow windows, including the web build. Confidence: low-medium. Inline comment posted at dialogs.rs:915.
  • Feature-layer Remove has no positive test. The smoke test covers only the tile branch and the negative name-collision case. A test with roads and roads_2 would cover the bug above. Confidence: high.
  • Smoke test fragility. The test's get_by_role_and_label(Role::Button, "Add") panics if more than one "Add" button exists. The listing wait loop also continues silently if the listing never arrives, so the failure would be unclear. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant. Interface text uses tl!, there are no new dependencies, there are no unwraps in non-test code, and the change stays in L6 (ui-egui).

Possible wrong-layer removal (medium confidence). starts_with(url) is a plain string prefix test. A feature layer's dataset.source is the exact offer URL (crates/engine/src/cmd/service_group.rs:177), so a listing offering https://h/items also matches a layer sourced from https://h/items2, and the row shows Remove and deletes the other service's layer. Requiring a boundary after the prefix avoids that:

Suggested change
let url = offer.get("url").and_then(Value::as_str).filter(|u| !u.is_empty())?;
.find(|layer| layer.dataset.source.as_deref().is_some_and(|s| s.strip_prefix(url).is_some_and(|rest| rest.is_empty() || rest.starts_with(['?', '&', '/', '#']))))

I have not confirmed how area downloads change source. If they append something other than these separators, this check would miss those layers, so please check that case before merging. Add a test with a shared-prefix address.

Bugs

  • Remove never appears for downloaded feature layers. added_from_listing compares dataset.source with the items URL, but a downloaded layer's source is its file name ({name}.geojson), so re-adding keeps offering Add and creates duplicates. The smoke test only covers tile layers. Inline comment posted on dialogs.rs:739. Confidence: high.
  • Remove may not appear for other offer kinds. WCS coverages are stored as .tif rasters under a file-name source, and OGC API tilesets may use an advertised template that differs from the offer URL. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted on dialogs.rs:747.

Security

  • None found in the changed lines. The template matching uses safe get()/strip_prefix/find with no indexing that could panic.

Performance

  • added_from_listing runs for every listed row on every frame and scans all layers and tiles. This is O(rows × layers) per repaint, which is acceptable for typical counts but worth caching if lists grow. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • The new test's comment says it covers "a feature layer named A", but it renames a sample layer. The features path is not tested at all (see the bug above).
  • The comment "Downloaded features keep the address they came from" is inaccurate given the source-naming behaviour above.

AGENTS.md

  • The removal message uses format! where AGENTS asks for i18n::fmt. Inline comment with a suggestion posted on dialogs.rs:1054. Confidence: high.
  • The new tl! labels, the never crash rules (no unwrap in non-test code), and the regression test all comply.

I did not run the tests or check the layout visually. The findings are from reading the diff and the engine code.

I ran into bunch of visual issues and edge cases when opening the various service providers configured by default.

The latest commits add the following improvements:

  • fix inconsistent scrollbar positioning
  • allow vertical and horizontal resizing of the service list
  • allow multi line services if they exceed the available horizontal space

min and max widths are configurable can can be changed if better defaults are found

Adding a screencapture to demo the changes:

Screencast_20261027_182100.mp4

Checking the github-actions review now

- Feature and WCS layers added from a service keep its address as
their source (not the download's file name), so Add From Service
  offers Remove for them.
- Coverages are told apart by their id; OGC API tile layers are
  matched under their tileset list.
- An address matches only itself or what follows it at a boundary
  (`…/items` no longer matches `…/items2`).
- "Removed {title}" goes through i18n::fmt.
- Smoke tests look up the listing rows by their merged title and kind.

The PR adds a Remove button to the Add From Service list. A listed layer that is already on the map shows Remove, and Remove runs layer.remove or map.removeTiles. Service layers now record their service address in dataset.source, and the dialog matches listed layers by that address. I found no crash paths. Everything I checked stays inside the "Never crash" rules: no unwrap, indexing, or panics in the new non-test code.

Security

  • layer.copyPath returns dataset.source unredacted, and the PR now stores full service addresses there. Those addresses can include a token= or key= value. Project save and project.info redact it, but copyPath does not. It is a .view() command, so the AI Assistant and MCP can reach it. Confidence: medium. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs:244.

Bugs

  • from_address accepts any source under a URL that ends in /. A feature offer at https://h/ would then match https://h/other, so Remove could hit the wrong layer. Confidence: low-medium. Inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:775.

Performance

  • refresh_added builds the added-state for every listing entry, not only the SHOWN_LAYERS rows shown, and each entry scans the map. Cost is listing × map size on each revision change. Confidence: low. Inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:734.

Quality

  • The list's min_width(560.0) may widen the auto-sized Add From Service window past its 560 px siblings. I could not check this visually. Confidence: low. Inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:994.
  • Minor: the layers pane groups service layers by their address now, not their file name. That is a visible behaviour change and may be intended. Not commented.

AGENTS.md

  • Command ids are untranslated, and the new visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. Commands do not open dialogs. The layering and wasm rules are not affected. The new tests cover the address matching and the feature, WCS, and tileset flows.

Checked and found fine

  • template_matches and coverage_id use no indexing and no unchecked slicing. The tests cover them.
  • Coverage ids are encoded the same way on both sides, so the match holds.
  • mark_service_source only runs on the service paths.

Code review

I reviewed the full diff against the base branch and read the surrounding code it depends on. I could not compile or run the tests (no build tool available here), so the findings rest on reading the code.

Bugs

  • Tile Remove can remove a sibling tileset's layer. dialogs.rs:766 matches any tile layer under the tileset-list prefix, not just this row's template. A row whose tileset isn't on the map can show Remove, and clicking it removes another tileset's layer. Suggested fix is an exact template match first, with the prefix only as fallback (posted inline). Confidence: medium. I could not confirm that one OGC listing can offer two tilesets under the same list address.
  • Keyed service layers may stop matching after a save and reopen (low confidence). strip_addresses removes keys from dataset.source on save and nothing restores them on load. The listing offer still carries the key, so from_address no longer matches and the row shows Add, which allows duplicates. In-session behaviour is fine.
  • Coverage ids are compared without percent-decoding (low confidence). coverage_id takes the raw value, so COVERAGEID=soil%20carbon and COVERAGE=soil carbon would not match. Only matters if one address is encoded and the other is not.

Security

  • The Properties pane shows the full service address, keys included (medium). panes.rs:5208 prints l.dataset.source raw. This PR now stores the full service address on Add From Service layers, so an api_key or token can appear in the "Source" row and in any screenshot of it. Before, these layers held only a file name. The fix is to pass the value through rustgis_engine::sources::redact (sources is pub). My inline comment on this line failed, because the line is not part of the diff, so it is recorded here only.
  • Checked and fine. Project save strips credentials through saved_address. info and copy_path redact. The Layers pane shows only the host.

Performance

  • Per-command rescan while the dialog is open (low). revision bumps on every command, so refresh_added rebuilds the listing's Remove table after each one. Each rebuild scans all map layers and tiles for up to 500 rows. This is probably acceptable, but it is worth knowing for large projects.
  • Per-row cloning (nit). dialogs.rs clones the cached command Value for every row on every frame.

Quality

  • dialogs.rs:1001: FontSelection::Default is built once per row and then cloned. Build it once outside the loop, or pass it by value.
  • dialogs.rs:997: the ScrollArea is assigned to a variable and then shown. It could be chained inline.
  • dialogs.rs:221–222: a stray blank line splits the collapsible_windows block.
  • Copy Path now returns the redacted address. That is intended, but a user can no longer copy a keyed service URL to reuse it elsewhere. Worth stating in the PR.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. Test-only unwraps are allowed by clippy.toml.
  • No new commands, so hostile_params_never_panic is not affected.
  • User-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. The format! used for label composition is not a message, so it is acceptable.
  • No dependency changes. The change is not in the coordinate-first list in CONTRIBUTING.
  • The PR body includes one screenshot. AGENTS asks for before and after shots of substantial visible changes where useful, so consider adding a before shot.

- A tile row matches its own template first; the tileset list
address is only a fallback, so a sibling tileset isn't removed.
- Layers are matched by their address without its keys too, so a
keyed service layer is still known after a save and reopen.
- The Properties pane's Source row hides keys, tokens and passwords.
- Remove state is worked out for the rows shown (the first 500
matching the filter), when the session, listing or filter changes.
- The list is never wider than the dialog; style nits.
- The WMS smoke test fails plainly when the listing never arrives.

Code review

Bugs

  • Tile fallback can remove the wrong tile layer when two rows share a tileset list path (dialogs.rs:793). Confidence: ~40%.
  • Trailing {Time} in a template matches every URL under its prefix (dialogs.rs:818). Confidence: high, low impact.

Security

  • None found. Keyed URLs stay in memory on dataset.source, as they already do for addUrl layers. Saves strip them (project.rs strip_addresses, covered by saved_layer_files_keep_no_address_secrets). Copy Path, the Source row, and the assistant's info all go through redact. Local paths pass through redact unchanged.

Performance

  • None significant. refresh_added recomputes only when the revision, listing, or filter changes. The matching_rows pass runs twice per frame, which is negligible.

Quality

  • The max_width(660.0) comment says "never wider than the dialog", but the code allows growth to 660 px (dialogs.rs:1018). Confidence: high.
  • Nits (dialogs.rs:769): layer_from returns a command, not a layer. type Source shadows the engine's Source name. &|url, s| from_address(url, s) can be &from_address. The "Places features" test labels depend on a double space.
  • Behaviour change not in the PR body: a downloaded feature layer's source is now its URL, not its file name. So Copy Path returns the URL, and the Layers pane groups it under the host. Confidence: high. This looks intended, but the description should say so.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code. Strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. Layering holds (ui-egui → engine). unsafe is not used.
  • The PR shows one screenshot. AGENTS asks for before/after screenshots for substantial visible changes. Confidence: medium.
  • The PR body says it ran clippy and rustfmt, not cargo xtask ci. Confidence: medium.

I could not compile or run the tests here (no Bash), so the build and the new smoke tests are unverified.

- A tile row matches its own template first; an OGC API row then
takes a tile layer under its tileset list only when no other shown
row's list covers it and no row matched it by template.
- A trailing {Time} placeholder takes a date, not any address under
  the prefix.
- The list width comment says what the code does.
- remove_command, ListedSource, &from_address; smoke tests find rows
by the title in their label.

Code review

I reviewed the full diff against the base branch and read the surrounding code in dialogs.rs, service.rs, sources.rs, project.rs and the command specs. The change is well-tested and matches the repository guidelines. Two smaller issues are posted inline.

Bugs

  • Low (≈60%): template_matches (dialogs.rs:849) accepts a {Time} value that contains /, ? or # when the placeholder is not the last segment. The trailing-empty branch rejects those characters but the other branches do not. A tile layer on the same host could be matched by mistake. Inline comment posted with a suggestion.

Security

  • No issues found. The stored in-memory service addresses keep their keys, but project.rs strips them on save (strip_addresses), and copy_path, the Layers pane's Source row and layer.info all redact. Keys do not reach the saved project.

Performance

  • ≈55%: the tile-claim loop in refresh_added (dialogs.rs:775) is roughly O(lists² × tiles). It runs on every session revision and every filter keystroke, so a large OGC landing could make typing sluggish. Inline comment posted with the fix.

Quality

  • title is computed twice in the row code (in the Remove branch and in the label), and the matching_rows result is recomputed each frame. Both are minor.
  • Two existing smoke-test assertions changed from get_by_label to get_by_label_contains because the label now carries the kind text. The intent is preserved, but the check is looser.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or indexing in non-test code. Test-only unwrap uses are fine.
  • User-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. New catalog entries are not required, per the guidelines.
  • The layer.addDownload params for service and coverage are documented in the command spec.
  • Layering is respected: ui-egui depends on rustgis_engine::sources, and no new std::time use appears.
  • Not checked: I could not build or run the tests, so wasm, clippy and the new smoke tests are unverified here.

- Every {Time} placeholder, not only a trailing one, takes one

once per tile, not for every (row, tile) pair.
- A row's title is read once.

Behaviour change (confidence: ~50%, design call): Copy Path now returns the redacted address for web layers, so a URL with api_key/token copies without the key. The copied text no longer re-adds the same layer, and the PR description doesn't mention this. Consider stating it in the PR and in docs/user-guide/editing.md (line 134), or keeping Copy Path unchanged and redacting only the Details pane.

Bugs

  • Tile rows lose Remove after save and reopen (confidence ~70%). Saving strips query keys from tile.url, but the tile arm of added_from_listing compares the keyed offer URL only, so the row shows Add for a layer already on the map. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:817 with a suggestion. The feature arm already tries the redacted address; the tile arm should too. No reopen test covers this.

Security

  • No leaks found. Keys are stripped on save (project.rs saved_address), in Details (panes.rs), and in Copy Path. The dataset.source values written by mark_service_source are stripped before save, and source_name shows hosts only.

Performance

  • refresh_added is cached by (revision, filter), which is sound. Each recompute is roughly O(500 × (layers + tiles)) with a redact per row. Revision bumps on every command, so this runs on each command while the dialog is open. Acceptable, but worth knowing.

Quality

  • Copy Path behaviour change (confidence ~50%, design call). It now copies keyless URLs, which no longer re-add the same layer. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/clipboard.rs:178. Not in the PR description; docs/user-guide/editing.md:134 may need a note.
  • Feature matching by prefix (confidence ~40%). from_address treats …/items/2 as belonging to …/items, which the tests assert on purpose. Remove on a collection row can therefore remove a manually added item layer, and find picks the first match in map order. Worth a comment or a narrower rule.
  • Layers pane grouping changed (confidence ~40%). Downloaded service layers now group under their host (layer_source in panes.rs) instead of their file name. Probably intended, but it is a visible change the PR doesn't mention.
  • refresh_added mixes caching, matching and tile claiming in about 50 lines. Extracting the claim loop into a helper would help readability.
  • Docs: docs/user-guide/web-data.md:496 describes Add From Service without the new Remove button.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, unsafe or indexing in the non-test code. Strings are wrapped in tl!/i18n::fmt. Layering is respected. The new commands are used by id.
  • Visible UI change: the PR has one screenshot and no before image. AGENTS asks for before/after "where useful" (low confidence that it's required).

- Tile rows also match the template without its keys, as a saved and
reopened project keeps it, so they still offer Remove.
- A feature row matches its address with a query or fragment after
it, not one further down its path (`…/items/2`); tileset lists keep
  their own path rule.
- The tileset claim loop is its own function (claim_tilesets).
- Docs: when Add From Service shows Remove; Copy Path gives addresses
  without their keys.

Behaviour change not in the PR description (medium confidence). Service feature and coverage layers used to keep their file name as dataset.source. Now they keep the service URL. The Layers pane groups by layer_source (panes.rs ~949), so these layers move from a file group to a host group (web:host/). That is probably fine, but it's visible and should be called out in the PR description or docs.

Bugs

  • Tile layers can be claimed by the wrong row when the filter hides rows. claim_tilesets counts tileset lists only over the shown rows, so Remove can delete another row's tile layer. Medium confidence. Inline at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:777.
  • Two copies of one service that differ only by key can be confused. The keyless match means Remove on one row can take the other copy. Low confidence. Inline at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:808.

Security

  • No problems found. Project saves already strip keys from dataset.source (project.rs addresses_mut/saved_address). Copy Path, the Details pane, the assistant's list_layers and the failure dialog all redact. Keys now sit in memory on service layers, as they already do for plain URL layers.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The cache is keyed on session revision and filter, and per-frame work is unchanged. Linear scans are O(rows × layers) per revision bump, which is acceptable.

Quality

  • Matching logic (added_from_listing, claim_tilesets, from_address, template_matches, coverage_id) lives in the egui front end and is tested only there. This conflicts with the thin-front-end principle in AGENTS.md. Medium confidence. Inline at crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:801.
  • Service feature and coverage layers now keep their URL as dataset.source, not a file name. The Layers pane's source grouping moves them from a file group to a host group, and the PR doesn't mention it. Medium confidence. Inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs:244.
  • Nit: template_matches lets an empty piece between adjacent {Time} placeholders match. No real template does this, so I'm not raising it as a finding.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points checked. No unwrap/expect in non-test code. New user-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. Docs are updated. Tests cover the new paths.
  • mark_service_source is pub(crate) in service.rs, and add_download calls it under super:: (layer.rs). I did not confirm that super::b is visible from there, so check that it compiles.
  • I could not run cargo xtask ci or the tests here.

- Which listed service layers are on the map (and the command that
removes each) moves from the egui dialog to
engine::cmd::service_added, with its tests; the dialog only caches it.
- A tile layer is claimed under a tileset list counting every listed
layer, so a row a filter hides still keeps its tiles.
- A layer's exact address is matched before its keyless one, so two
copies of a service under different keys each find their own.

Possible false "Remove" for a user's own OGC tile layer (confidence: medium, ~0.5). claim_tilesets gives a row any tile layer that sits under its tileset list and matches no other listed template. It never checks where the tile layer came from. Take a collection whose list is https://h/c/tiles, and a user who adds https://h/c/tiles/OtherSet/{z}/{x}/{y} by hand. That layer is under one list, so the row claims it. The row then shows Remove even though it never added anything, and clicking Remove deletes the user's layer. The docs say a layer of your own is left alone, but that only holds for name matches. The OGC tile case goes by list prefix alone.

A fix that doesn't rely on inference: record the source when the tiles are added, the way mark_service_source does for layers (for example, a tile layer's url already holds the advertised template after ogc adds it). Otherwise, at least add a test for this case and narrow the docs claim in docs/user-guide/data-formats.md.

assert_eq!(conn.listing.as_ref().unwrap()["count"], 1);
h.step();
h.get_by_label("Places");
h.get_by_label_contains("Places");

Nit: this changes an existing get_by_label to get_by_label_contains only because the row label now carries the kind suffix (Places features). The same change is at line 2649. It loosens the assertion, so a row with the wrong title would still pass. Consider asserting on the title and kind together, or on the row's Add/Remove button, so the test fails if the title goes missing.

Bugs

  • claim_tilesets (crates/engine/src/cmd/service_added.rs, inline comment posted) can give an OGC row Remove for a tile layer the user added by hand under the same tileset list. Clicking it would delete the user's layer. Confidence: medium (~0.5). The docs' promise that a user's own layer is left alone only holds for name matches.

Security

  • No issues found. I checked:

    • Saving strips addresses (strip_addresses, project.rs).
    • Copy Path, the Details pane, the assistant's info and history redact keys.
    • The Layers pane's source_name shows only the host.
    • The new redact calls cover the new paths.

    Confidence: high.

Performance

  • refresh_added is cached per session.revision, but revision bumps on every command (engine/src/lib.rs:1127). With the dialog open, each command recomputes added() for up to 500 rows, redacting each row's URL and scanning every map layer. Likely fine in practice. Confidence: low (~0.3).

Quality

  • Two existing assertions changed from get_by_label to get_by_label_contains (smoke.rs:2551, :2649) only because the label now carries the kind suffix. That loosens them (inline comment posted on 2551). Confidence: high, minor.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant as far as I can read. The non-test code has no unwrap/expect/panic, new UI strings use tl! or i18n::fmt, the user guide is updated, and nothing below apps/ uses std::time or new assets. The new commands are not in hostile_params_never_panic, but no new command was added.

Not verified

  • I had no shell, so I did not compile or run cargo xtask ci, the new tests or the wasm build. Compile-level checks were by reading only.
  • What I checked: the APIs the new module uses (Map::layer_mut, TileLayer::url, Map::tiles, layer.remove, map.removeTiles) exist and are public. Borrow splitting in refresh_added looks valid.
