feat(symbology): stacked polygon fills — hatch lines and markers, from QGIS fill symbols (#882 piece 5a) - #1022
Piece 5a of #882: QGIS fill symbols beyond a single colour.
What it adds
Stacked fills on polygon layers (Layer.fill_layers) and on Unique Values / Graduated Colors classes (class_fills, other_fills). Up to 8 fills, drawn bottom first inside the outline, with the outline on top. Each fill is one of:
Solid: a colour, or the feature's colour.
Hatch lines: angle (anticlockwise from east), spacing, line width and offset.
Markers on a grid: shape, size, outline, spacing across and down, and staggered rows/columns.
Rendering (crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs):
Each pattern is a small tile repeated by tiny-skia's Pattern shader.
The lattice is anchored to the map origin in f64 and reduced modulo one period. Patterns therefore stay fixed to the map as it pans and zooms, neighbouring polygons line up, and a reference scale is respected.
Tiles are cached per thread: at most 1,024 tiles or 64 MB (a tile is at most 512 px across), the oldest going first.
Fills draw on the CPU only. Layers with fills are excluded from both GPU paths.
It is wired into Command Search (opens the Symbology pane), "show me" and task recording.
Recorded steps for different classes are no longer merged. This also applies to lineStrokes and color.
Symbology pane › Fills: add, move up or down, and remove fills; set Draw (Solid / Hatch lines / Markers) and Color (or From symbol); per-class fills under Fills for, as for strokes. Follows the ArcGIS Pro layer-stack style of the Strokes section.
QGIS import of fill symbol layers as a stack:
Simple fill brushes horizontal, vertical, b_diagonal, f_diagonal, cross and diagonal_x become hatch lines, measured against QGIS renders at 96 dpi (1 px lines 8 px apart).
LinePatternFill becomes one hatch per stroke of its sub-line.
PointPatternFill becomes markers with its distances, displacement and offsets.
Gradient and shapeburst fills are drawn in their first colour.
Dense brushes, SVG, raster and random fills become a tint.
Each approximation is noted in the import report.
A single simple fill stays the symbol's fill, so existing imports are unchanged.
The symbol's opacity fades the fills.
Backward compatibility
The new serde fields default to empty, are skipped when empty, and are read leniently.
Layers without fills take the old drawing path unchanged; the render test pins this.
Old projects load and draw as before.
Tests
Render:
stacked_fills_hatch_and_dot_polygons_anchored_to_the_map covers hatch spacing, anchoring while panning, turning, dots, class fills, and the unchanged no-fills path.
reference_scaled_hatch_stays_on_the_map_as_it_pans is the regression test for the lattice origin under a reference scale. It fails with the old origin.
cargo xtask ci: fmt, clippy and layers pass. All tests pass except the two text-rendering tests that fail only on my machine (text_takes_italic_alignment_and_letter_spacing, a_text_graphic_is_drawn_aligned_slanted_and_spaced; unrelated). hostile_params_never_panic is green.
Not in this PR
5b: gradient and shapeburst fills drawn properly.
Legend: swatches still show the symbol's colour, not the pattern, because LegendEntry carries no fills.
Globe: patterns keep to the screen rather than the globe (documented).
Import: font markers in point pattern fills draw as their font's character (as QGIS does; a circle only where no installed font has it).
Measure (SMV25 against QGIS 4.2.3, share of pixels that differ)
Old town 8.3 %, forest 4.1 %, overview 11.0 %: the same as before this PR. The pattern-filled areas (vineyards, greenhouses, solar panels, nurseries) are small in these views. The vineyards (a font character on a 0.6 × 1.8 mm grid) now draw as rows of short green strokes, as in QGIS, slightly softer.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Polygon layers can use stacked solid, hatch, and marker-pattern fills, with controls to add, edit, reorder, and remove them.
Unique-value and graduated classes can have their own fill stacks. Fills appear beneath outlines, and patterns stay anchored to the map as you pan and zoom.
QGIS imports now preserve more multilayer and patterned polygon fills, with approximations for some unsupported styles.
Added the layer.fillLayers command for setting layer-wide or class-specific fills.
Documentation
Updated the cartography, map rendering, and QGIS import guides with details on polygon fills and rendering behavior, including CPU rendering limitations for rotated or tilted maps.

Summary
Fill data and renderer state crates/map/src/fills.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/map/src/symbology.rs, renderer fixtures
Adds serializable fill patterns, limits, sanitization, and lenient deserialization. Layers and Unique Values or Graduated renderers store fill stacks. Renderer methods retrieve and update class fills, and carry matching edits forward.
QGIS fill conversion crates/map/src/qgis/*, crates/map/src/qgis/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/workspace.md
Converts supported QGIS hatch, line-pattern, and point-pattern fills to fill stacks. Assigns fills to layer styles or renderer classes. Tests and documentation describe conversion results and approximations.
Fill command and editor crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/*, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
Adds layer.fillLayers validation and layer- or class-level updates. Adds Symbology-pane controls to select, edit, reorder, preview, and remove fills. Tests cover editing, persistence, undo, and invalid inputs.
Polygon fill rendering crates/render/src/*, docs/user-guide/maps.md
Draws configured polygon fills on the CPU, with pattern tiles anchored to the map and the symbol outline drawn afterward. Layers with stacked fills are excluded from GPU rendering. Tests cover patterns, class-fill precedence, panning, and reference scaling.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
I found no confirmed bugs. The lenient parsing, clamping and undo paths hold up on reading, and the crate-level unwrap, unsafe and wasm rules are respected. I could not build or run the tests (no shell), so everything below is from reading the diff and the surrounding source. Inline comments are on the lines listed.
Bugs
None confirmed. Low confidence: Layer::has_fills() checks renderer class fills without the polygon-only filter that Style::apply applies to layer-level fills. A non-polygon layer with class fills would lose the GPU path for no visible gain. Very unlikely in practice. (crates/map/src/lib.rs, confidence low)
Security
None found. Project-file and command input are clamped, with junk-input tests (fills_read_leniently_and_within_their_ranges, fill_layers_stack_and_survive_save_and_undo).
Performance
pattern_fill.rs:145: key() allocates on every polygon and every pattern fill, every frame. For dots it also formats the marker's Debug name into a String. Marker already derives Hash. Confidence medium (not profiled).
pattern_fill.rs:20: the tile cache clears completely at 64 entries. A layer with more than about 64 distinct hatched or dotted classes could rebuild tiles most frames. Confidence medium-low.
render/src/lib.rs:3173: layer.fills(row) is evaluated twice per polygon. Nit, confidence high, small impact.
Quality
layer.rs:614: the [across, down] parser's and_then/ok_or(()) chain is hard to read. Suggestion given.
fills.rs:143: the draws condition is correct because && binds tighter, but parentheses make it clearer. Nit.
fill_editor.rs:51: fills_editor duplicates much of line_strokes_editor (class picker, header, • marker). The two will drift. Confidence medium-high.
Nit, not posted inline: docs/user-guide/workspace.md line 127 is one very long line that breaks the file's wrapping.
maps.md:420: grammar fix suggested.
AGENTS.md
fill_editor.rs:97: user-visible format!("{label} •") should go through i18n::fmt. Confidence medium.
Checked and fine: no unwrap/expect/panic/unsafe in non-test code. No std::time in the wasm path. Commands do not open dialogs. No new assets, so no ATTRIBUTION.md rows needed. Layering holds.

Layer-level fills are painted over rows the renderer hides (crates/map/src/lib.rs:572, medium confidence, ~55%). When a class has no fills of its own, Layer::fills falls back to fill_layers for every row. For a Unique layer, unmatched values use other, and render="false" classes use a hidden symbol. Both are meant to draw nothing, but once a user sets layer-level fills with layer.fillLayers, those rows get painted. The QGIS import is unaffected, because it clears fill_layers for classed renderers. A fix needs care: a class with a transparent base symbol and its own fills must still draw.
QGIS LinePatternFill angle direction is unverified (crates/map/src/qgis/symbol.rs, low confidence, ~30%). The brush angles were measured against QGIS renders, but lineangle is taken as anticlockwise from east with no conversion. Qt's rotate convention may make it clockwise. This needs a QGIS render to settle.
Security
Nothing found. Command input is clamped and validated, there is no I/O in the new code, there is no unsafe, and there is no unwrap/expect in non-test code.
Performance
Each polygon is classified up to three times per frame (crates/render/src/lib.rs:3173, medium confidence, ~70%). layer.style(row) already classifies once. The new guard and arm body each call layer.fills(row), which runs another class_of. Renderer::style_for exists to avoid this for strokes. Fold the fills into that lookup, or bind the result once.
A heap allocation per polygon, per fill, per frame (crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs:145, medium confidence, ~65%). key() builds a Vec and runs format!("{marker:?}") for every dot fill. The cache is also rebuilt per feature, and filled() calls view.to_screen per feature. Hash the marker, or build tiles once per layer per frame.
Tile cache can thrash (crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs:166, low confidence, ~35%). Every class × fill × colour is a separate key, so clear() at 64 entries can drop tiles that are still in use. Use LRU eviction, or state the memory bound. Up to 64 tiles of 512² px is roughly 64 MB, and wasm never returns that memory.
Quality
Nit: crates/map/src/fills.rs:143 has unparenthesised &&/|| in draws. It is correct as written, but parentheses make it clearer.
Nit: crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:614 has a convoluted Ok(..).and_then(..).map_err(..) chain in pair. The suggestion there replaces only line 614, so the three-line replacement needs to be applied by hand.
Nit: crates/ui-egui/src/fill_editor.rs:75 has a first binding that only exists to be pushed.
Nit: "Fill N" numbering counts from the top, so the bottom fill (the symbol's colour) carries the highest number. That is confusing to read.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Checked: no unwrap/expect/panic/unsafe in non-test code; the hostile-params test iterates the whole registry, so layer.fillLayers is covered; UI text is wrapped in tl!; layering holds (ui-egui only); nothing wasm-unsafe (no std::time or file access); no new dependencies; user docs updated; no assets added.
Low-confidence nit: fill_editor.rs builds the class label suffix with format!("{label} •"). It is not a translated message, so this is probably fine.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 40638b1 to PR head ecb6d8c).
No confirmed correctness bugs. I read the diff and the surrounding render, symbology, and command code. Lattice anchoring, hatch rotation, tile keys, and the tile cache eviction all check out on paper. I could not build or run the tests here (no cargo), so this is a reading-only result. (confidence: medium)
Security
None found. Command parameters and project-file input are clamped and validated, de_fills and de_class_fills are bounded, and the tile cache has a size cap. (confidence: high)
Performance
Layer::fills(row) classes each polygon a second time, after Layer::style(row) has already done it in the same frame. The repo's style_for exists to avoid exactly this. (confidence: high, inline on crates/map/src/lib.rs:576)
Polygons with fills skip the sub-pixel splat path (render/src/lib.rs:3163). This is a deliberate trade-off and is commented, but dense layers of tiny parcels will now draw one path each. (confidence: medium)
Quality
filled() in pattern_fill.rs repeats the path build and outline stroke of Ctx::polygon(). (confidence: medium-high, inline on crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs:44)
Fill numbering in the editor runs against the stack order: the top fill is "Fill 1", and each add renumbers the others. (confidence: medium, inline on crates/ui-egui/src/fill_editor.rs:133)
The fills editor's "Rows shifted" control is the only displacement control. The column down-shift and the grid offset can be set by command but not in the UI, so a QGIS import that uses them shows values you cannot edit. (confidence: medium)
Dynamic tl!(label), tl!(kind(..)), and tl!(marker.label()) calls, plus the labels passed into number() ("Angle", "Spacing", …), are not literal tl!("…") calls at the call site. Release extraction may miss them. The repo already uses this pattern in places, so the risk is low. (confidence: low)
AGENTS.md
Checked and compliant: no unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe in non-test code. The new command is covered by the registry-wide hostile-params test. tl! is used for UI strings, and i18n::fmt for the one formatted label. Only serde_json already in map is used, with no new dependency. thread_local and Arc are fine for wasm. The layering holds.
The PR description says "at most 64 tiles of 512 px", but the code caps at 1024 tiles and 64 MB (pattern_fill.rsMAX_TILES, MAX_TILE_BYTES). Please update the description to match the code. (confidence: high)

Low: Two categories with the same value overwrite each other's class fills (crates/map/src/qgis/renderer.rs:168). The strokes code has the same shape, so this predates the PR. Confidence: low to medium.
Low: Reference-scaled layers rebuild their pattern tiles every frame while zooming. The cache key uses the exact ppp bits, and size_factor changes continuously with zoom (crates/render/src/lib.rs:2998), so the cache never hits for those layers. Confidence: medium.
Security
No findings. The new command clamps numbers, caps the fill count at 8, bounds the interned font names at 4096, and creates no file or network access.
Performance
The tile cache is bounded (1024 tiles, 64 MB), and the tile is built once per key rather than per polygon. The reference-scale churn above is the only concern. Confidence: medium.
Quality
Medium:Dots.outline_width persists as outline_width, while the command and UI use outlineWidth. rename_all on the enum does not rename struct-variant fields; rename_all_fields does. Cheap to fix now, unreleased. Confidence: high that the key is snake_case.
Low: The pattern shader hard-codes anti_alias: true. Solid fills honour the fast-mode antialias flag and pattern edges don't. Confidence: medium.
Doc mismatch: The PR description says "at most 64 tiles of 512 px". The code allows 1024 tiles and 64 MB. Confidence: high.
Nits:
The fill editor's dot preview shows row shifts but not column shifts, which the renderer draws (crates/ui-egui/src/fill_editor.rs:308).
docs/user-guide/workspace.md line 2595 is much longer than its neighbours.
AGENTS.md
Quality gate: AGENTS.md requires cargo xtask ci to pass before each commit. The PR says two text-rendering tests fail on the author's machine (text_takes_italic_alignment_and_letter_spacing, a_text_graphic_is_drawn_aligned_slanted_and_spaced). Please confirm they also fail on main, or fix them before merge. Confidence: medium, since the failure may be environmental.
Compliant: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code; user-facing strings use tl!; no new dependencies or assets; the wasm-sensitive code uses no std::time; the layering holds.
Nit:"pattern": null is rejected while the other keys accept null as the default (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:658).
I posted inline comments on five of these: pattern_fill.rs:70, pattern_fill.rs:22, fills.rs:39, renderer.rs:168, and layer.rs:658. I checked the new fill-layer code and the existing render, serde and command paths it relies on, and found no crash, panic or data-loss path.

If a class has a fill with color: Some(...), fills_in selects that fill instead of the symbol’s fill. layer.noFill sets only the symbol fill’s alpha to zero. The fill therefore remains visible after the command reports success. Update layer.noFill to handle class and layer fill stacks, or make its rendering contract hide them. The command is registered in crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs at Line 153; the renderer uses the explicit fill color in crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs at Lines 52–55. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

… are indexed; pattern edges follow antialiasing; camelCase fill fields
- A dots tile of a character marker drawn while the installed families are being indexed (the label font for now) is drawn without being kept, as glyphs::shape keeps no shape then, so it draws in its own family once they are.
- A pattern fill's edges are antialiased as the map is (crate::antialiased()), as solid fills are.
- FillPattern's fields are saved in camelCase (outlineWidth), as the rest of the format and the command are.
- "pattern": null takes the default (solid), as null does for the other keys.
The Fills editor's swatch preview draws fills the map skips. A width-0 hatch still shows 0.5 pt lines, and the preview ignores FillLayer::draws. Posted inline on fill_editor.rs:284 with a one-line fix. Confidence: medium-high.
Nothing else I checked looks wrong. The render arm order, the tile lattice maths, the cache eviction, the carry_edits_from range handling and the undo-merge change all read correctly. I could not compile or run the tests here, so compile completeness of every struct literal is unverified.
Security
None found. The new command validates its input, and the project-file readers clamp and drop bad entries.
Performance
Clicking Add Fill on an empty stack creates a single Solid fill with no colour. That disables the GPU path (has_fills()) for an effectively no-op stack. Confidence: medium. Suggest only adding it when there is something to draw, or treating a lone colourless solid as no stack.
Quality
The fill numbering in the editor counts from the top (Fill 1 is the top). The symbol's own fill ends up with the highest number. Confidence: medium.
fills.rsclamped() uses MAX_HATCH_WIDTH as the bound for marker outline width. It works, but the name misleads. Confidence: high.
let _ = app.run("layer.fillLayers", …) discards errors. This matches the existing set_strokes, so it is a consistency note, not a regression. Confidence: high.
character() is only read for dots. A hatch with a bad char is silently ignored. Confidence: high.
docs/user-guide/workspace.md (around lines 2608–2611): one approximation sentence runs past the file's wrap width. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
The PR adds a substantial visible UI (a 377-line editor and a new pane section) but the description contains no screenshots or before/after images. AGENTS.md asks for these for substantial visible changes. Confidence: high.
The PR description says the tile cache holds "at most 64 tiles of 512 px". The code caps at 1024 tiles and 64 MB (pattern_fill.rs, MAX_TILES/MAX_TILE_BYTES). Update the description to match. Confidence: high.
No unwrap/expect/panic appears in non-test code, no unsafe, and no new assets need attribution.

The table shows the 12 largest of the 21 changed files. The totals cover all 21.
I read the full diff against the repository guidelines and checked the cross-file dependencies: Marker::ALL, class_ref, need_polygons, draw_marker, marker_font, the layer-opacity offscreen pass, the Graduated carry-over guard, and the tl! and i18n::fmt usage. I found no crash, panic, or wasm-breaking defect. The hostile-input paths clamp and use get(), and the new code has no non-test unwrap, expect, or panic. I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so the CI results are unverified.
Bugs
None found with confidence. I checked the tile-cache eviction, the hatch and dots lattice anchoring and rotation, the opacity handling (layer opacity is applied offscreen, so filled() drawing at alpha 1 is consistent), and the nested alpha fade in the QGIS import (each read() applies only its own alpha). All were consistent. Confidence: medium-high.
Security
None. The new data is parsed leniently and clamped on every path, including de_fills, de_class_fills, set_class_fills, and the command. Confidence: high.
Performance
None blocking. The tile cache is capped at 1024 tiles and 64 MB, the per-polygon work is a hash lookup and an Arc clone, and has_fills keeps the GPU and splat paths unchanged for layers without fills. Confidence: medium.
Quality
crates/map/src/lib.rs:572: the Layer::fills comment is hard to parse (inline suggestion posted). Confidence: high.
crates/ui-egui/src/fill_editor.rs:85: the first binding is only used in one branch (inline suggestion posted). Confidence: high.
crates/render/src/lib.rs (the (sym, strokes, &[] as &[rustgis_map::fills::FillLayer]) tuple): a named let none: &[FillLayer] = &[]; would read better. Nit, confidence: high.
crates/render/src/pattern_fill.rs (the origin comment at the to_screen call): the parenthetical is clumsy. Nit, confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
The PR adds a substantial visible change (the Fills editor and patterns drawn on the map) but its description has no screenshots. AGENTS.md asks for before and after images in that case. Confidence: high.
The description says cargo xtask ci is not fully green locally (two text-rendering tests fail on the author's machine). AGENTS.md requires it to pass before every commit. Ask for CI evidence or an explanation that the failures are environmental. Confidence: high that the gap is stated; the cause is unknown.
The new interface strings are wrapped in tl! and i18n::fmt, and no new assets are added. These comply.

…le the fonts are indexed
A dots tile of a character marker drawn before the installed families are indexed (in the label font for now) was drawn again for every polygon. It is now kept in a small provisional cache, apart from the tiles, and left behind once its family is settled, when the tile is drawn in its own family and kept as any other. Also: plainer wording on Layer::fills, and the Add Fill push inlined.
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding render, map, and engine code. I did not find a correctness bug. The main gaps are an AGENTS.md compliance miss and two small quality and performance points.
Bugs
Multi-solid QGIS symbols now draw both fills. The PR says "existing imports are unchanged", which only holds for single-fill symbols. A symbol with two solid layers used to show only the top colour and now composites both. This is arguably more faithful to QGIS, but the description overstates the compatibility. Confidence: medium.
Security
No findings. The new command and project deserialization clamp, validate, and bound their inputs. I found no panicking index or unwrap in non-test code.
Performance
pattern_fill.rs:128: marker_font runs per polygon per frame, before the cache lookup. Confidence: low-medium. Inline comment posted.
Quality
fill_editor.rs:303: the swatch preview ignores displacement[1] (the down shift of odd columns), so it does not match the map. The editor also has no control for that value. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted.
docs/user-guide/workspace.md: the new "approximated" sentence is one very long line, unlike the surrounding wrapped text. Nit.
AGENTS.md
No screenshots for a substantial visible change. The PR adds a new Fills editor section and new pattern rendering, and the body has no screenshots or asset links. AGENTS.md asks for before/after screenshots for these. Confidence: high.
The new tl!(kind(&f)) and tl!(marker.label()) calls follow existing patterns and are fine.
No new dependencies, assets, or ribbon changes, so the licence, attribution, and ribbon rules don't apply.
The PR body says two text-rendering tests fail on the author's machine. Confirm CI is green, since cargo xtask ci is required before commit.
Checked and not raised
The lattice origin is computed in f64 (to_screen returns f64), as the PR says.
Pattern tiles are keyed on everything that affects their pixels; eviction and provisional-tile handling are sound.
The fills dispatch covers the layer draw path; the other polygon paths are basemap outlines, masks, and selection highlights, which don't need fills.
The GPU and splat paths exclude or tint fills correctly.

…ed fonts clear every provisional tile; the swatch shifts odd columns down
- tile() takes whether a tile may be kept as a closure, asked only when the tile isn't among the kept ones, so a layer of character markers doesn't look its family up for each polygon every frame.
- A character marker's tile drawn once the fonts are settled leaves every provisional tile behind (the index is done for all families), not only its own.
- The Fills swatch lays dots as the map does: odd rows shifted across, odd columns down (displacement[1] was left out).
I read the whole diff and the surrounding code for the new fill stack (fills.rs, pattern_fill.rs, fill_editor.rs, the layer.fillLayers command, the QGIS import, and the render path). I found no correctness bugs. Layer transparency is applied by offscreen compositing, so the stacked-fill path does not need its own opacity. Tile-cache eviction, lattice anchoring, the project-file read path, and the command's junk handling all check out on reading.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found. Project-file and command input is clamped and validated, and the hostile_params_never_panic harness covers the new command automatically.
Performance
Nothing blocking. Pattern tiles are cached per thread with a bounded count and byte budget. The render path only takes the CPU fill path for layers with fills.
Quality
Nit (confidence 0.6): Key.bits in pattern_fill.rs is filled through magic index ranges. Named fields would make a layout mistake easier to spot. (Inline comment posted.)
Nit (confidence 0.8): panes.rs::stroke_classes now also serves the Fills section, so its name is misleading. (Inline comment posted.)
Nit (confidence 0.9): the doc comment on fills.rs::within ("one of no number is none") is garbled. (Inline comment posted.)
Nit (confidence 0.7): in docs/user-guide/workspace.md, the new "approximated (...)" sentence runs well past the file's wrap width.
AGENTS.md
Confidence 0.9: AGENTS.md asks for screenshots in the PR for substantial visible changes. This PR adds a new Fills section to the Symbology pane and changes map output, but the PR body has no screenshots, before or after. Please add them, rendered with ui_shot.
Checked and compliant: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, tl! used for interface text, the new command registered through CommandSpec, the layering rules respected, and docs updated.
Things I checked and did not raise
Dynamic tl!(kind(&f)) and tl!(m.label()) calls: the same pattern is already used in panes.rs and ribbon.rs.
The layer.fillLayers undo merge: it follows the existing lineStrokes behaviour.
Design note, not raised as a defect: a class with no fills of its own always takes the layer's stacked fills, so it cannot opt out to show only its symbol fill. The docs describe this behaviour.
