fix(project): a saved selection holds each row once, in order - #1032
A layer's selection is saved in the project as a list of rows and read back as written, apart from rows past the layer's end, which reading already drops (project.rs). A row repeated in the file, from a hand edit or another program, stayed repeated, and every built-in tool takes the selection as given, so each ran on that feature twice: Feature To Point made two points for it, Summary Statistics counted it twice.
Layer::normalize_selection (crates/map/src/lib.rs) keeps a selection in range, in order and each row once. Reading a project calls it in place of the range check alone, and the select commands call it in place of their own sort and dedup, so the rule lives in one place.
Opening an offline area (offline.open) copied its snapshot's layers into the project as read from the file; it now normalizes them too.
Nothing else changes: selections the app makes are already sorted and unique, and the file format is the same.
Found while answering a review question on #1003 (Feature Vertices To Points), whose vertex count had a comment about repeated rows.
Testing
New test a_saved_selection_is_read_in_range_in_order_and_once: a sample project whose Countries selection is edited to [3, 1, 3, 1000000] reads back as [1, 3], and an offline area whose snapshot selection is edited the same way opens with it put right. Each part fails without its fix.
Selections are cleaned up when projects are loaded or offline maps are opened. Invalid entries are discarded, duplicates are removed, and the remaining selections are kept in ascending order.
Selections are also kept in this consistent order after changes are made, preventing out-of-range or duplicate rows from lingering in saved selections. This ensures selections are valid and consistent across project reloads, offline map openings, and selection updates.
A layer's selection is saved as a list of rows and read back as written, apart from rows past
the layer's end, which reading already drops. A row repeated in the file (edited by hand, or
written by another program) stayed repeated, so every tool ran on it twice: Feature To Point made
two points for the feature and Summary Statistics counted it twice. Reading now sorts the
selection and drops repeats, as selecting does.

Walkthrough
Layer selections are normalized by filtering out-of-range indices, sorting valid indices, and removing duplicates. Project normalization, selection updates, and offline map opening use the shared method.
Layer::normalize_selection removes indices outside the feature range, sorts the remaining indices, and removes duplicates.
Apply normalization to selection entry points crates/engine/src/project.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/workspace.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Project normalization and selection updates call the shared method. Opening an offline map normalizes each layer in the stored snapshot. Tests check the results after project reload and offline map opening.
opengeos/RustGIS#855: Its selection commands use the shared set function, which now normalizes selections.

Nit (maintainability, confidence: high): this sort and dedup repeats the two lines at crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs:145-146. The comment above ties the two together, so they can drift apart. A small helper on Layer in crates/map/src/lib.rs (for example sort_selection) that both call would keep the rule in one place. This is a suggestion, not a blocker, since it spans two crates.
I found no bugs, security problems or performance problems in the two changed files. I posted one maintainability nit inline. I could not run the test suite here (no shell), so the PR's reported test results are unverified.
Bugs: None found. Checked:
project.rs:694-695 sits inside normalize, which from_json calls, so the new test exercises the real read path.
select.rs:145-146 already sorts and dedups in set(). The PR's claim that app-made selections are already sorted and unique holds: map/src/lib.rs:447 rebuilds by enumeration, and design.rs:609 appends only indexes larger than any existing row.
The selection field has only #[serde(default)], so the test's JSON key round-trips correctly.
The push(0) calls in window.rs are test fixtures on empty selections.
Security: None found. No new input handling beyond sorting a Vec<usize> already bounded by retain.
Performance: None of note. The added sort is O(n log n) on the selection size, once per project load.
Quality:
Nit (confidence: high): the sort and dedup is duplicated in select.rs:145-146 and project.rs:694-695. A shared helper would keep the rule in one place. Posted inline at project.rs:695.
AGENTS.md: Compliant. No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code (the test uses unwrap, as the rest of tests.rs does). No unsafe. No new dependencies, UI text or assets. No changelog exists in the repo.

Normalize offline snapshot selections too.
A hand-edited offline_areas[*].data.layers[*].selection is not covered by this loop. If its offline map is not already open, offline.open copies the snapshot into the project without normalizing it (crates/engine/src/cmd/workspace.rs, Lines 210–220). A later select.layerFromSelection can then create duplicate features (crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs, Lines 68–80). Apply the same range, sort, and deduplication steps to snapshot layers. …in order
Review follow-ups:
- Layer::normalize_selection keeps a selection in range, in order and each row once. Reading a
project and the select commands both call it, so the rule lives in one place.
- Opening an offline area copied its snapshot's layers, as read from the project file, into the
project without that clean-up; it now normalizes them too.

Nit: the comment doesn't say why this is needed. read_json checks the layers of self.maps only (project.rs, the for m in &mut self.maps loop), so offline snapshots never get this fix on load. Saying so makes the reason clear to the next reader:
Suggested change
// The snapshot was read from the project file as it was written.
// Reading a project checks only maps' layers, not offline snapshots', so their selections are put right here.
Reviewed the whole PR (5 files, about 100 changed lines) against the base branch. Nothing blocking. The one inline comment is a wording nit on crates/engine/src/cmd/workspace.rs:222.
Bugs: None found. Confidence: high.
I checked the new Layer::normalize_selection (retain in range, sort, dedup) against both call sites. read_json runs it over every map's layers, and select::set already filtered incoming rows to in range, so the extra retain in set changes nothing in practice.
Offline snapshots sit outside the maps loop in read_json, so the offline.open call is needed. The existing offline test (tests.rs:6188) already selects Cities in the same Paris extent, so the new test's len() - 1 is unlikely to underflow.
No selection-revision counter exists, so nothing cached needs invalidating.
Security: None found. Confidence: high. The change only sorts and dedups integer indices.
Performance: None of note. Confidence: high. set() already sorted and deduped on every call, so the cost is unchanged.
Quality:
Inline comment on workspace.rs:222: the comment doesn't say why the normalization is needed. Offline snapshots aren't covered by the map-layer checks on load. Confidence: high.
Minor, not posted: in the test, want.dedup() is a roundabout way to handle last == 0. Confidence: medium that it's worth changing.
AGENTS.md: Compliant. Confidence: high.
No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The test uses unwrap, as the existing tests do.
No new user-visible strings, dependencies or unsafe.
The change stays in the map and engine crates, so wasm and layering are unaffected.

@coderabbitai The offline snapshot finding is fixed in 683b851: offline.open normalizes the snapshot's layers with the same Layer::normalize_selection, and the regression test covers it.
@flight1973 Confirmed in 683b851. offline.open normalizes every copied snapshot layer before adding the map. The regression test covers duplicate, out-of-order, and out-of-range selections.
This addresses the offline snapshot finding. I inspected the changes but did not run the tests.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
Reading a project checks only maps' layers, not offline snapshots', so the comment now says that
is why their selections are put right when an area opens. No behavior change.
The fix is correct as far as I can verify by reading. I found no bugs or security issues. Two wording nits are posted inline.
Bugs
None found. I checked every entry point that can bring an unnormalized selection into the engine:
Project::from_json and from_import_json both go through read_json → normalize(), which calls normalize_selection on each map's layers.
select::set already filters rows at select.rs:132, so the new retain there is a no-op and nothing changes.
offline.open normalizes its cloned snapshot layers. This is the only path that touches offline snapshots, and the comment explains why.
The test's expected values work out: [0, last, last, last+1] → [0, last], and Countries[3,1,3,1000000] → [1,3].
Low confidence (~30%), a question rather than a defect: offline.open now clamps selections to dataset.features.len(). If an offline snapshot ever holds a streamed (windowed) layer with a partial feature list, a saved selection could be cut back there. Previously it was kept as written. I did not confirm whether offline.download stores streamed layers, so this needs a check.
Security
None found. The change only reorders and dedups integers and clamps them to the feature count.
Performance
None found. normalize_selection is one O(n log n) sort plus an O(n) retain and dedup, the same cost as the previous sort and dedup. The retain is negligible.
Quality
Nit (inline, crates/map/src/lib.rs:700): the doc comment "Keeps the selection as selecting makes it" is vague. A suggested rewording is attached. Confidence: high.
Nit (inline, crates/engine/src/tests.rs:170): the want.dedup() exists for the single-feature case but is not explained. A suggested comment is attached. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic, indexing or unsafe. The test uses unwrap and indexing, which is allowed in test code. The helper lives in rustgis-map, which keeps the layering intact. There are no UI strings and no wasm-sensitive APIs.
Because this is a bug fix, the hostile_params_never_panic tests don't apply directly. The new regression test covers the fix.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 3a2d52d → PR head be0dccc). Five files were modified, with none added, removed or renamed.

Nit: want.dedup() after vec![0, last] only does anything when last == 0, so the assertion reads as more general than it is. Stating the single-feature case directly is clearer:
Suggested change
letmut want = vec![0, last];
// Row 0 and the last row, once each: one row when the layer has a single feature.
Separately, cities.dataset.features.len() - 1 (line 166) underflows, and the test panics with an unhelpful message, if the Paris extent holds no Cities features in the sample. This passes today, so it is only a fragility note.
Bugs: none found. I checked the changed paths and the callers they affect:
select::set already filters rows to the layer's range, so the new retain inside normalize_selection is a no-op there. The sort and dedup are unchanged in effect.
The project read path calls normalize_selection after the same features.len() value the old retain used, so the range check is unchanged.
Offline snapshots are built by snapshot() (workspace.rs:516), which clears each copied layer's selection and rebuilds features from the extent. A non-empty snapshot selection can only come from a hand-edited file, so normalizing it on open cannot drop app-made selections.
design.rs:609 appends new rows past every existing row, so the selection stays sorted and unique.
Confidence: high.
Security: none. The code only manipulates in-memory index vectors.
Performance: none. retain adds one O(k) pass to the existing O(k log k) sort, where k is the selection size. Confidence: high.
Quality:
Nit, posted inline (crates/engine/src/tests.rs:169-172): want.dedup() after vec![0, last] only has an effect when last == 0. Stating the single-feature case directly reads more clearly. Confidence: high.
Nit, not posted: cities.dataset.features.len() - 1 (tests.rs:166) underflows and panics with an unhelpful message if the sample's Paris extent has no Cities features. The test passes today, so this is only a fragility note. Confidence: medium.
Behavior change, intended by the PR: reading a project now sorts a hand-edited selection, where it previously kept file order. The app's own selections were already sorted, so nothing user-visible changes. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md: compliant. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic, or indexing. The test's unwrap calls are allowed in tests. The change is pure logic in the map and engine crates, so it does not affect layering or wasm builds. No new dependencies or UI text. The change is a correctness fix covered by a regression test, which is what AGENTS.md asks for.
