Follow-up to #1031: this fix for its two review findings (1, 2) was pushed to the branch just after it merged, so it isn't in main.

Map::place_layer and Map::move_group hand the tile layers drawn over the layers they move to the layer below (release_tiles), also when the layers end where they were: a layer placed on its own spot (layer.group with a before that leaves it in place, which a drop on its own spot goes through), or a group moved to its own position. A tile layer then slipped under a layer that didn't move. move_layer and lift_out already skip the release when nothing moves.

Now both note each tile layer's place before (tile_places) and put it back when the drawing order is unchanged (keep_tiles_if_unmoved); a real move hands them on as before.

Testing

  • tile_layers_stay_over_a_layer_or_group_that_stays: a tile layer over Lakes stays there when Lakes is placed above Countries (where it is) and when the group of Lakes and Countries is moved to its own place; a real move still takes it along. It fails without the fix (the tile layer drops under Lakes).
  • The same commit passed fmt, clippy and cargo test --workspace on feat(layers): new layers go on top, web tile layers take a place among the map's layers (#808) #1031's branch; on main, clippy and the map and tile-layer tests pass.

UI evidence

No visible change beyond the layer order staying as it was.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Keeping a layer or group in its current position now preserves tile-layer order and associations, including when tile layers have no IDs or their positions merge.
    • Tile layers remain in drawing order when layers or groups stay in place.
    • When a duplicated-ID layer moves, its tile placement is handed to the next layer; when a group’s bottom layer leaves in place, the tile layer remains correctly positioned above the group.
    • Moving a layer or group to a different position continues to release its pinned tile placements.

Walkthrough

Map::place_layer and Map::move_group now restore pinned tile placements when a move leaves layer order unchanged. Tests cover layer and group moves, tiles without IDs, drawing order, duplicate IDs, and group-layer movement.

Changes: Tile placement preservation

Bugs

  • None confirmed. The fix snapshots each tile layer's place, and keep_tiles_if_unmoved restores it only when the layer order is unchanged. Tiles are keyed by id because release_tiles re-sorts self.tiles, so the restore is correct. No unwrap, expect, or unsafe is added in non-test code. (confidence: high)
  • Behaviour question: a place_layer that keeps the order but moves a layer into a group right above it will snap the tile above that group, because the guard only compares order. This matches set_group, so it may be intended, but the doc comment doesn't cover it. (confidence: low; inline comment on crates/map/src/lib.rs:1570)

Security

  • None found. The change is in-memory ordering logic with no new input parsing.

Performance

  • Negligible. layer_order() allocates and tile_places() runs tile_slots() on every place_layer and move_group call, even when the move is a real one and the snapshot is discarded. The find over tiles is O(T²), which is fine at realistic tile counts. (confidence: high, low impact)

Quality

  • The final assertion in tile_layers_stay_over_a_layer_or_group_that_stays doesn't do what its comment says. Cities has no tile over it, so the test passes with or without the fix, and "a real move still takes it along" is untested. Suggested replacement is inline on crates/engine/src/tests.rs:16268. I traced the expected stack by hand, but did not run it. (confidence: high)
  • Nit: the tile_places doc comment ("where some tile layer has one among the layers") is hard to parse. Its Option return should also say it is None when no tile layer is over a layer. Consider noting why ids are used rather than indices (release_tiles re-sorts). (confidence: high)

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant. Crate-root lint denies are respected, the new non-test code uses let … else, and the test uses unwrap like the surrounding tests in tests.rs. No new user-visible text, dependencies, or assets. (confidence: high)

Code review

Bugs

  • Low severity, about 50% confidence: when a move leaves the layer order unchanged, keep_tiles_if_unmoved restores the pre-call tile list and drops the sort_tiles(0) that release_tiles ran on main. The tile list can already be out of drawing order after add_group or gather_group, so the next no-op placement no longer fixes it. map.tiles, pop-ups and the Assistant read that order. Suggested fix is inline (crates/map/src/lib.rs:1583).

Security

  • None found. The new code takes no external input and adds no unsafe code.

Performance

  • None worth raising. pin_tile_places clones the tile list and layer_order allocates on each place_layer and move_group call. Both are small, and the clone is discarded on real moves.

Quality

  • Nit, about 90% confidence: the pin_tile_places doc comment is hard to parse. A suggested rewrite is inline (crates/map/src/lib.rs:1561).

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant as far as I can tell. The non-test code has no unwrap, expect, indexing or unsafe. The new tests in crates/engine/src/tests.rs use unwrap like the existing tests there. Nothing touches wasm, i18n or the ribbon.

Checked, no issue found

  • I traced the four assertions in the new tests against the code. The to index for map.setTiles is the stack position without the tile, so the expected stacks hold.
  • tile_layers_stay_over_a_layer_or_group_that_stays and tile_layers_without_ids_keep_their_places_when_nothing_moves fail on main, so they guard the fix. a_tile_layer_over_a_group_stays_when_its_bottom_layer_leaves_in_place passes on main too, so it guards the pin-before-snapshot step rather than the basic fix.
  • Not run: I had no build or test tooling, so the tests and rustfmt are unverified.

Code review

I read the diff, place_layer, move_group, release_tiles, tile_slots, stack and move_layer, and traced the new tests by hand against the code. I did not compile or run the tests, so the test results are reasoned, not observed.

Bugs: None found. The "unmoved" check holds: place_layer reinserts at at, which equals from only when the drawing order is unchanged. move_group compares start with at the same way. move_layer always moves when it reaches release_tiles, so the PR does not need a matching change there. The new tests follow the code paths.

Security: None. The change has no input handling, I/O or new dependencies.

Performance:

  • pin_tile_places clones the whole tile list on every place_layer and move_group, but the clone is discarded whenever the layers move. The cost is small, so this is low priority. (Confidence: high that it is wasted work; low that it matters.)

Quality:

  • keep_tiles_if_unmoved(bool, Option<Vec<TileLayer>>) takes a bool and an Option that come from one decision, and it overwrites all of self.tiles. That is fragile if a future edit changes tiles between the snapshot and the restore. (Confidence: medium.)
  • The test tile_layers_are_listed_in_drawing_order_after_a_move_in_place uses name.len() as the URL host, which is hard to read. (Confidence: high.)

AGENTS.md: Compliant. The new production code has no unwrap, expect or indexing, and unsafe is absent. The test file already uses unwrap throughout. No UI strings were added, and no assets or dependencies changed.

I posted three inline comments: crates/map/src/lib.rs:1582, crates/map/src/lib.rs:1567 and crates/engine/src/tests.rs:16305.

Comment thread crates/map/src/lib.rs
…s where it was

place_layer and move_group handed the tile layers over the layers they move to the layer below them, also when the layers ended where they were (a layer placed on its own spot, a group moved to its own place), so a tile layer slipped under a layer that didn't move. Their places are now put back when the drawing order is unchanged, as move_layer and lift_out don't release them then.
…eir ids

A tile layer's id may be empty or shared, so restoring places by id could seat two tile layers in one place and change their order. The tile layers are kept whole before the release and put back as they were. Tests: two tile layers with no id keep their places; a real group move hands its tile layer on (its stack checked), as the last step's comment says; and the doc says a layer that only changes group keeps its tile layers, seated over the group as set_group does.
…hey're kept

The tile layers were kept as they were, but one left over a group's former top layer by a move inside the group (move_layer pins before it moves and doesn't settle after) was then put back over that layer, and settled under the new groups it dropped below the group's top. They're pinned first, as release_tiles pins them, then kept. Tests: the reviewer's case (a move inside a group, then its bottom layer taken out in place), and the tile layers without ids with one over the layer placed.
… ids; the tile list is sorted after it

- place_layer is unmoved when the layer goes back where it was taken from, move_group when its layers' unbroken run goes back to its start: a project may repeat a layer id, so the ids' order can't tell a real move of one of them (which must hand its tile layers on) from none.
- The tile layers put back are sorted into the drawing order, as release_tiles sorts them, so the list map.tiles reads stays in step.
- Plainer doc on pin_tile_places.
…ces may merge

pin_tile_places sorts the list into the drawing order as it is before keeping it: a list left out of that order by a change to the groups (which re-seats tile layers without sorting them) put back and sorted after a layer joined the group below it, where two tile layers' places merge, drew them the other way round. Test: two tile layers, the list reversed, Rivers put in the group of Lakes in place; they keep their order. Also a plainer URL in a test.

Test coverage (confidence: high): this only checks that the tile list agrees with the stack, so it still passes on the pre-fix code. Before the fix, layer.group on Countries sent "Over Countries" under all layers, and the list and stack still agreed. The test never checks that the tile layer stays over Countries, which is the regression this PR fixes. Asserting the stack directly closes that gap:

Fair: this test checks the list against the stack, and the stack itself is pinned by tile_layers_stay_over_a_layer_or_group_that_stays; asserting it here too is a good extra guard. The PR merged before this landed, so it goes with the next change to these tests.

Nit (confidence: high): the doc comment on pin_tile_places is wrapped unevenly. Lines 1599 and 1603 run past 120 columns, and "apart." is left alone on the last line. The rest of the file wraps near 100 columns, so rewrapping this paragraph would match.

Performance (confidence: low): every place_layer and move_group call with a tile layer over a layer now clones the whole Vec<TileLayer>, including its strings and the style_layers JSON, even when the move is real and the snapshot is thrown away. The cost is small for typical maps with a few tile layers, so this is worth knowing but not blocking. If it shows up in profiles, the unmoved check can be computed before release_tiles runs, since release never changes the layer order.

As answered on the earlier thread: small, and only when some tile layer has a place; left as is unless it shows in a profile.

Code review

Bugs: none found. I traced place_layer, move_group, release_tiles, pin_tiles and sort_tiles by hand. The unmoved test is right in both paths: at == from in place_layer and start == Some(at) in move_group each hold exactly when the drawing order is unchanged. move_layer cannot reach a no-op after its splits_group adjustment, so it does not need the same handling. No unwrap, expect or indexing panics in non-test code. Confidence: high.

Security: none found. Confidence: high.

Performance:

  • pin_tile_places clones the whole Vec<TileLayer> on every place_layer and move_group call with a tile layer over a layer, including when the move is real and the copy is discarded. Impact is small for typical maps. Confidence: low.

Quality:

  • The pin_tile_places doc comment is wrapped unevenly, with lines past 120 columns and an orphan "apart.". Confidence: high.
  • keep_tiles_if_unmoved(unmoved, places) reuses the name places, which move_tile also uses for a different type. Nit. Confidence: medium.

Test coverage:

  • tile_layers_are_listed_in_drawing_order_after_a_move_in_place only checks that the tile list agrees with the stack. The pre-fix code would also pass it, so it does not catch the regression. Asserting the expected stack closes the gap. Confidence: high.
