feat(assistant): read standalone tables with read_features - #1038
The AI Assistant (and MCP clients) can now read a standalone table, such as the table Summary Statistics produces. Before this change, run_tool returned the table's name, but read_features only looked names up among map layers. As a result an agent could compute statistics but never read them: the explore-data skill told it to run summaryStatistics, and the result was a table it couldn't open.
read_features
New table argument: a standalone table's name or id.
A layer name that no map layer has, but a standalone table has, reads that table. A tool's result names its output table, and models pass that name as layer about as often as table. Layers come first, so a layer and a table with the same name read the layer.
A table's reply says table instead of layer. Its rows have _row but no _lon/_lat. where, fields, order_by and limit work the same as for layers. selected is an error for a table, because tables have no selection.
Descriptions the model reads. The run_tool description said a tool's output "is added to the map as a new layer". It now also covers standalone tables and points to read_features. The same fix is in the system prompt, the MCP server's instructions, docs/mcp.md and the explore-data skill.
No command ids or command parameters change; only the assistant's own read_features tool gains the table argument.
This is the first step of #1019: Summary Statistics with several statistics and case fields, then a Pivot Table tool. Without it, neither tool's output would be readable by an agent.
Testing
New read_features_reads_a_tools_output_table (crates/assistant/src/tests.rs). It runs summaryStatistics through run_tool, then reads the output table by table name, by id, and as layer (case-insensitively). It covers where and order_by ... DESC on a table, the error for selected, a missing name, and a layer name passed as table. It also checks that a layer keeps its name over a table sharing it.
cargo test -p rustgis-assistant: 222 passed
cargo xtask ci: passed (fmt, clippy, all workspace tests, layers)
Read attributes from standalone tables produced by geoprocessing tools, using a table name or ID. Table results identify their source and do not include layer coordinates.
If a layer name does not match a layer, lookup can find a table with the same name. An explicit table selection takes precedence over a layer selection.
Table results cannot be used for row selection.
Documentation
Clarified that geoprocessing tools can return a layer or standalone table, and explained how to read table results, including ordering statistics to find the largest group.
A tool's output table (Summary Statistics) came back by name from
run_tool, but read_features only looked up map layers, so an agent could
compute statistics and never read them.
read_features takes a `table` (a standalone table's name or id), and a
`layer` name that no layer has reads the table of that name; layers come
first. A table's reply says `table`, its rows carry `_row` but no
location, and `selected` is refused since tables have no selection.
The run_tool description, the system prompt, the MCP instructions and
docs, and the explore-data skill now say a tool's output may be a table,
and how to read it.

Bug (medium-high confidence):a.get("table") also matches an explicit JSON null. A call such as {"layer": "Cities", "table": null}, which models often send for optional parameters they don't use, takes this branch and fails with "give the table's name or id", even though layer is valid. Nothing strips nulls from tool arguments before they reach here. Treat null as absent:
An empty string ("table": "") has the same problem. Filtering it out too, or adding a regression test with {"layer": "Cities", "table": null} next to the existing cases in read_features_reads_a_tools_output_table, would cover both.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 47fbd1a. A table that is null or blank text now counts as absent, so {"layer": "Cities", "table": null} reads Cities. The test now covers null, "" and whitespace. Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (medium confidence): This re-implements name lookup, but the doc on project::find_table says it is "the one rule commands and tools find a table by". The two rules differ. find_table prefers an exact-case match before a case-insensitive one, and this code takes the first case-insensitive match, so with tables stats and Stats a layer: "Stats" reads the wrong table while table: "Stats" reads the right one. Reusing find_table removes the divergence. One side effect: it also accepts a numeric id, so layer: "7" would read table 7 when no layer 7 exists. That is consistent with table, but it is a widening, so it should be deliberate.
Suggested change
let by_name = layer.as_str().and_then(|n| s.project.tables.iter().position(|t| t.name.eq_ignore_ascii_case(n.trim())));

Fixed in 47fbd1a. The fallback now uses project::find_table, so layer and table agree (exact case first), and the test checks that stats and Stats read the same rows both ways. I kept it to names: a find_table hit is used only when the table's name matches, so layer: "7" never reads table 7. The test asserts that too. A name that's neither a layer nor a table now says "no layer or standalone table named '…'". Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (low confidence): The schema no longer marks anything as required, so the model isn't told that one of layer or table must be given. The runtime check still catches it, but the schema can say so directly. If the provider handles anyOf, this is the change:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I changed the description instead of the schema, in 47fbd1a: it now says "Give layer or table." No tool schema in this crate uses anyOf/oneOf, and the same schemas go to the OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini request builders. Gemini's function declarations accept only a subset of JSON Schema, so a top-level anyOf risks being rejected. The runtime check still refuses a call with neither. Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.
Explicit "table": null breaks valid layer calls.a.get("table") matches JSON null, so {"layer": "Cities", "table": null} fails with "give the table's name or id" even though layer is valid. Models often send nulls for unused optional parameters. Inline comment on tools.rs:598 with a fix and a regression-test suggestion. Confidence: medium-high.
Security
None found. The change adds no file, network or process access, and the new code has no unwrap outside tests.
Performance
None found. The table lookup is a linear scan over a short list of tables.
Quality
Name lookup diverges from project::find_table. The fallback takes the first case-insensitive match, while find_table (documented as "the one rule" tools use) prefers an exact match. With tables stats and Stats, layer: "Stats" reads the wrong one. Reusing find_table fixes it but also accepts numeric ids, which should be a deliberate choice. Inline comment on tools.rs:605. Confidence: medium.
Schema no longer marks anything required. Removing required drops the signal that layer or table must be given. Inline comment on tools.rs:104, with an anyOf option if the provider accepts it. Confidence: low.
Nits, grouped:
agent.rs:1080 adds a doc comment to system_prompt that this PR does not need.
read_features lets table win silently when both layer and table are given.
The "no layer named" error does not mention that a table name would also work.
read_features builds the object, then inserts the layer/table key through if let Some(o). Choosing the key up front would read more simply.
AGENTS.md
Checked and compliant: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, no new dependencies, no std::time use, no UI strings needing tl!. Model-facing error text is not translated, which matches the rule that only interface text is.
Not verified: the PR's claims about cargo xtask ci and the wasm build. I could only read the code.

read_features took `"table": null` (how models send an unused optional
argument) as a request for a table, and failed even with a valid layer.
A null or blank table is now absent.
A layer name that no layer has finds a table by project::find_table's
rule, exact case first, as `table` does; it still matches names, not
ids. A name neither has says so: "no layer or standalone table named".
The descriptions say to give layer or table, and that a table's id goes
as text.

Nit (low confidence it matters): "(Summary Statistics)" reads as the only tool that yields a standalone table. Any tool whose output is Output::Table (see gp.rs, put_table) does the same, so an example is clearer than a list. The same narrowing appears in the system prompt (agent.rs, "a standalone table (statistics)") and should change with it.

Done in 88bb339: run_tool now says "for example Summary Statistics", and the system prompt says "for example statistics". Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.
No bugs or security issues found. The change adds a table argument to read_features, makes layer fall back to a standalone table name, and updates the docs and prompts to match. I read the logic against Session::table_index, project::find_table, put_table and the gp.run table output. I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so the new test is checked by reading only.
Bugs
None found. Null, blank and non-string table values, numeric ids, and hostile shapes (objects, arrays, negative or fractional numbers) all return errors without panicking. The layer fallback only accepts a case-insensitive name match, so an id-looking string cannot reach the wrong table. Confidence: high.
Security
None found. The new code only reads in-memory project data. Confidence: high.
Performance
None found. Confidence: high.
Quality
Inline on tools.rs:88: "(Summary Statistics)" implies it is the only tool that produces a table. The same narrowing is in the system prompt at agent.rs ("a standalone table (statistics)"). Confidence: medium (wording only).
The required: ["layer"] entry was removed from the read_features schema. Models now get no schema hint that one of layer or table is needed; the error only arrives at run time. Confidence: medium.
row_source (tools.rs ~610) repeats the name-matching rule of project::find_table and then re-checks the name with eq_ignore_ascii_case. It is correct, but a small helper, or a comment saying why the re-check is needed, would make it easier to read. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or indexing was added to non-test code. Assistant error text is model-facing, so the tl! rule does not apply. Docs (docs/mcp.md) and the skill were updated with the behaviour. Confidence: high.
Not a violation, but worth knowing: crates/assistant/src/tests.rs depends on layer.addDataText turning a plain CSV into a standalone table named after the file, and on summaryStatistics naming its fields COUNT_pop_est and SUM_pop_est. Both are consistent with the code I read. I could not run the test, so this rests on the PR's own claim of 222 passing.

The layer fallback trimmed a name before looking for a table, while
`table` and layer names are matched as written, so `stats ` could read
the table `stats` through `layer` and nothing through `table`. Names are
no longer trimmed. The run_tool description and the system prompt give
Summary Statistics as one example of a tool that makes a table, not the
only one.

Nit (test-coverage, confidence: high): this loop only checks that layer and table agree on is_ok(). If both fail, or both succeed with the wrong content, the assertion still passes, so it doesn't verify the "matched as written" rule. Asserting the reply's name ("stats " should be an error and " Stats" should be an error, or the expected table) would pin the behaviour down.

Done in cfa77cb, together with CodeRabbit's version of the same point: the test now asserts which table and row each spaced name reads, and the exact error for names that match nothing. Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.

Nit (quality, confidence: medium):Ok(table(...)?) and the Ok(table(i)?) at line 615 wrap a Result in another Ok, and the table closure (line 599) returns &str errors that ? converts to String. Returning the closure's result directly reads more clearly. Making the closure return String errors (.ok_or_else(|| "no such table".to_string())) lets both sites be a plain return table(...?) / table(i).

Done in cfa77cb: the closure returns String errors, and both call sites return its result directly. Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build passed on this commit.
I found no correctness, crash, or security problems. The new table path and the layer-name fallback resolve through existing lookups (Session::table_index, project::find_table), and the fallback filters out id-only matches, so layer: "7" can't read table 7. put_table replaces same-named tables, so a tool's output name points at the current table. Non-test code adds no unwrap/expect, and no new unsafe, file or network access.
Bugs
None found.
Security
None found. The new argument only reads tables already in the project.
Performance
None found. Lookups are linear over the project's tables, which is fine at this scale.
Quality
Redundant Result wrapping in row_source (confidence: medium). tools.rs:603 and :615 wrap table(...) in Ok(...), and the closure's &str errors are converted by ?. Inline comment posted on tools.rs:603.
Removed required from the schema (confidence: low). read_features no longer marks layer as required and doesn't say that one of layer/table is needed. The runtime error covers it, so this only costs a wasted call. Consider anyOf if the provider schemas accept it.
Error message changes for numeric ids (confidence: low). For layer: "7" with no such layer or table, the reply now says no layer or standalone table named '7' and drops the layer lookup's own message.
Tests
Weak assertion in the untrimmed-name loop (confidence: high). tests.rs:444 compares only is_ok() between layer and table, so it passes if both fail or both return wrong content. Inline comment posted.
Weak assertion for layer-by-id (confidence: low). tests.rs:454 accepts any Err, so it doesn't check that the id is rejected.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. Tool descriptions are model-facing, so they don't need tl!. No new assets, no wasm issues, no layering changes. The docs (docs/mcp.md, the explore-data skill and the system prompt) match the new behaviour.

The untrimmed-name test only compared whether `layer` and `table`
succeeded, so it passed if both were wrong. It now adds tables named
`stats ` and ` Stats` beside `stats` and `Stats`, and checks that each
name reads its own table's row through both arguments, and that a
spaced name no table has is refused with the expected error. The table
lookup in row_source returns its result directly.

Test coverage (low severity, confidence high): the new table argument is not exercised by hostile_arguments_never_panic (crates/assistant/src/tests.rs, the junk list around line 523). That list has layer junk but no table junk, so values like {"table": {"a": 1}}, {"table": 1e20}, {"table": [1]} and {"table": true} are never run through row_source/table_index. The code does handle them (table_index falls through to _ => Err), but AGENTS.md asks that every new input path stay under that test. Suggested addition to the junk list:

Added in 85aff8e: hostile_arguments_never_panic now sends table as an object, 1e20, an array, true and -1, mixed with junk layer, fields and order_by values, through every tool. Full cargo xtask ci passed on this commit.

Quality (nit): this one test covers about ten behaviours (table reads by name/id/layer, where/order_by, the selected error, missing names, layer-vs-table precedence, null/empty table, case-insensitive and whitespace-sensitive name matching, and the id-not-a-name rule). When one assertion fails the failure message is hard to place. Splitting it into 3–4 focused tests (e.g. reads_output_table_by_table_or_layer_name, layer_name_falls_back_to_table_but_layers_win, table_name_matching_is_exact_as_written, table_has_no_selection_or_location) would make the intent clearer. Not blocking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I'll keep it as one test. Each assertion's message names the argument and the table name it checked ("{arg} {name:?}: {read}", "{unused}: {read}"), so a failure points at the case that broke. The test builds up one project step by step (an output table, then stats/Stats, then the spaced names, then a table named like a layer), and splitting it would mean rebuilding that state in each piece.
Bugs. None found. I checked the new row_source lookup against Session::table_index and project::find_table. The layer-name fallback filters out the id step, so layer: "7" cannot read table 7. Layers win over tables, and selected on a table returns an error. Output names cannot go stale: put_table replaces any table with the same name. Confidence: high.
Security. None found. The change adds no new capability: it reads standalone tables that were already readable, and it has no file or network access. Confidence: high.
Performance. None found. Lookups are linear over the table list, which is small. Confidence: high.
Quality.
The read_features schema drops required: ["layer"] entirely, so the model gets no schema hint that one of layer or table is needed. The description says "Give layer or table.", so the impact is small. Consider anyOf with required on each, if the providers accept it. Confidence: medium.
agent.rs:1080 adds a doc comment on system_prompt that the change does not need. Harmless, but unrelated to the change. Confidence: high.
The new test is long; see the inline comment on tests.rs:392. Confidence: high.
Test coverage. The table argument is not in hostile_arguments_never_panic; see the inline comment on tools.rs:105. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md. Compliant as far as I can see. The changed code has no unwrap, expect or panic outside tests, and is_none_or is already used elsewhere in the repo. Nothing here touches UI text, assets, dependencies or wasm-only paths. Confidence: high.

- Line 607: Add a string-only table_id input to the table tool and use it to
resolve tables by ID, so duplicate names remain addressable; preserve the
existing table-name lookup behavior and precedence through table_index for name
inputs.

hostile_arguments_never_panic had junk for `layer` but none for the new
`table` argument. It now sends objects, huge, negative and boolean
values and arrays as `table`, mixed with junk layer, fields and
order_by values.

Nit (quality, high confidence): this "null or empty text counts as absent" predicate repeats the same expression at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1269, :1379 and :1811. The rule is the same in both places, so a shared helper would stop the two copies drifting apart. It can go in a follow-up, since the two crates don't share a module yet.

I'll leave this one: it's a one-line predicate in two crates at different layers. The analysis copies sit in rustgis-analysis (L2), on tool parameters; this one is in rustgis-assistant (L5), on model arguments. Sharing it would mean a new public helper in a lower crate just for this check. If a third crate needs the rule, or the copies start to differ, a shared helper would be worth it then.
I found no bugs, security problems, or AGENTS.md violations in this change. I traced the new read_features lookup against Session::layer_id, Session::table_index, project::find_table, put_table and the run_tool reply ({"table": name}). The table-first precedence, the layer-before-table fallback, the id-rejecting name filter, and the error messages the tests match all agree with the code. The new code has no unwrap or indexing outside tests, and it adds hostile-argument cases. is_none_or is fine on the pinned Rust 1.90. I did not compile or run the tests, since this review had no build tool.
Bugs: none found.
Security: none found.
Performance: none found. The lookup is a linear scan over the tables, which is fine at this scale.
Quality:
Nit, high confidence: the "null or empty text counts as absent" predicate for table is duplicated in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs (lines 1269, 1379, 1811). Posted inline on crates/assistant/src/tools.rs:605.
Nit, medium confidence: read_features drops "required": ["layer"], so the schema no longer says that one of layer or table is needed. The runtime error covers it. Keep it as is unless you want anyOf, which some providers reject.
Nit, medium confidence: the new test read_features_reads_a_tools_output_table is one long function, with a use inside a loop. Splitting it into a few named tests would make failures easier to read.
Nit, low confidence: the reply object in read_features could be a single json! with a computed key instead of four insert calls.
AGENTS.md: no violations. Layering is kept, the assistant crate is unchanged in layer, docs/mcp.md and the skill are updated with the tool changes, and the new hostile cases cover the new arguments.
Design notes (low confidence, no change requested):
If table and layer are both given, layer is ignored without a message.
A mistyped layer name now silently reads a standalone table of the same name. This is intended, and the docs say so.
A name-only table read returns the first table with that name. put_table removes same-named tables when a tool runs, so the output name is unique at that moment. A user who later adds a CSV with the same name could make a name read return the older table. Returning the table id from run_tool would remove that ambiguity. This is outside the diff (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:803).

Summary
The AI Assistant (and MCP clients) can now read a standalone table, such as the table Summary Statistics produces. Before this change,
run_toolreturned the table's name, butread_featuresonly looked names up among map layers. As a result an agent could compute statistics but never read them: the explore-data skill told it to runsummaryStatistics, and the result was a table it couldn't open.read_featurestableargument: a standalone table's name or id.layername that no map layer has, but a standalone table has, reads that table. A tool's result names its output table, and models pass that name aslayerabout as often astable. Layers come first, so a layer and a table with the same name read the layer.tableinstead oflayer. Its rows have_rowbut no_lon/_lat.where,fields,order_byandlimitwork the same as for layers.selectedis an error for a table, because tables have no selection.Descriptions the model reads. The
run_tooldescription said a tool's output "is added to the map as a new layer". It now also covers standalone tables and points toread_features. The same fix is in the system prompt, the MCP server's instructions,docs/mcp.mdand the explore-data skill. No command ids or command parameters change; only the assistant's own
read_featurestool gains thetableargument. This is the first step of #1019: Summary Statistics with several statistics and case fields, then a Pivot Table tool. Without it, neither tool's output would be readable by an agent.
