A web tile layer's row in the Layers pane couldn't be selected (a click did nothing), so the Selected in Layers pop-up mode could never identify a tile layer: a WMS layer added from a service (swisstopo, for example) gave no pop-up in that mode, and vector tile layers, archives and MapLibre styles neither.

Changes

  • Layers pane: a click on a tile layer's row picks it, highlighted as an active layer's row is. No map layer is active then; clicking one ends the pick.
  • map.selectTiles (name/index/id): the command the click runs, view state like layer.select (no undo step, nothing to save). map.tiles lists the picked one with "selected": true; Session::selected_tile() reads it.
  • Identify, Selected in Layers: asks the picked tile layer alone. A WMS layer gets its GetFeatureInfo request in featureInfo; a vector tile layer, PMTiles/MBTiles archive or MapLibre style lists its features. Catalog basemaps and MapLibre styles are asked too when picked, though Topmost and Visible still leave them out (as feat(identify): pop-ups for vector tile features (PMTiles, MBTiles, MVT) #565 chose, so a click on empty map doesn't list a basemap's roads). No raster pixel is reported in their place.
  • The pick is session-only (TileLayer.selected, serde(skip)) and moves with the layer when reordered. Undo and redo keep it (picking isn't an undo step). The Layers filter hiding it ends it, as it does for the active layer.
  • Docs: editing.md (pop-ups) and maps.md (tile layers); the identify command's description.

Not changed: Selectable Layers still skips tile layers (their features can't be selected), and raster tiles have nothing to identify. Picking several layers at once, mixing tile and map layers, is left for a follow-up.

Testing

  • selected_in_layers_asks_the_tile_layer_picked: a WMS layer and a catalog WMS basemap; nothing asked before a pick; the picked one alone asked (the basemap too, which Visible leaves out); no undo step; the pick survives a move, undo and redo; picking a map layer ends it for good.
  • identify_reports_vector_tile_features: a PMTiles archive made a basemap isn't identified unless picked.
  • identify_lists_tile_features_of_data_and_of_the_layer_picked: which tile kinds and roles are identified, picked or not.
  • a_tile_layers_row_is_picked_with_a_click (ui-egui): a click picks the row, the filter hiding it ends the pick, a layer's row click picks that instead.
  • fmt, clippy and the workspace tests pass locally (only the known box-only failures); the wasm build is left to CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Select tile layers in the Layers pane and use Selected in Layers mode to identify only that layer, including WMS layers, vector tiles, PMTiles and MBTiles archives, catalog basemaps, and selected MapLibre styles.
    • Tile selection is preserved across undo and redo, and is cleared when a map layer is selected or a filter hides the selected tile.
    • When the selected tile layer has no identify results or requests, identification no longer falls back to a raster pixel.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the user guide with details on selecting tile layers and identifying their features.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

Tile layers can now be selected in the Layers pane. In Selected in Layers mode, identify queries the selected tile for eligible features or WMS feature information. Selection state is shown in the pane and changes with map-layer selection, filtering, undo, and redo.

Changes: Tile-layer selection and identify

Layer / File(s) Summary
Selection state and command
crates/map/src/tiles.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/tiles.rs
Tile layers have session-only selection state. map.selectTiles selects a tile layer and clears map-layer selection. Session logic clears tile selection when a map layer is active and restores it across undo and redo.
Layers pane interaction
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs
Tile rows display selection state and select a tile when clicked. Filtering out a selected tile clears its selection. Tests cover tile and feature-layer selection.
Selected tile identify
crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/select_info.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/editing.md, docs/user-guide/maps.md
Selected in Layers queries only the picked tile. PMTiles, MBTiles, and Vector layers can provide features when picked, added as data, or overlays. Style layers can provide features when picked. Picked layers can also receive WMS feature-info requests. Tests and user guides cover the behavior.

Code review

I read the diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md and checked the undo/redo path, the per-command fix_active_layer normalisation, the identify tail, and the UI row and filter hooks. I could not compile or run the tests here. The main logic holds up: a picked tile layer ends when a map layer becomes active, the pick survives move, undo and redo, and the identify changes are scoped to the picked layer. I found one low-impact correctness issue and two nits.

Bugs

  • crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1397: when the picked layer's name is missing after undo or redo, unwrap_or(0) moves the pick to the first tile layer with the same URL and kind. That layer may not be the one picked. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • None found. The new command takes only a name or index, resolved through the existing find.

Performance

  • None worth raising. selected_tile() is called once per tile row per frame, which is O(rows × tiles) on a small list.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs:401: #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)] is redundant because the workspace already allows that lint and the engine inherits it. Confidence: high.
  • Design note, not raised inline: TileLayer.selected puts session view state in the project model, so every undo snapshot carries it and keep_tile_pick has to re-match it by URL, kind and name. Storing the pick on Session, as layer_selection is stored, would avoid that matching. Confidence: medium. Taken as a judgement call, not a defect.

AGENTS.md

  • AGENTS.md asks for screenshots with substantial visible changes. This PR adds a picked-row highlight to the Layers pane, and the PR body has no screenshot. Confidence: medium, since the change may not count as substantial.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:570: tiles[i] follows a get check, but AGENTS.md prefers get() over indexing. Confidence: high, style only.
  • Other AGENTS.md points checked and fine: no new unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no new user-visible strings needing tl!, command ids are not translated, the new command follows the map.expandTiles pattern, docs were updated, and the hostile-params harness covers the new command.

Inline comments are posted on lib.rs:1397, select.rs:401 and panes.rs:570.

…Layers asks them

A click on a web tile layer's row in the Layers pane now picks it (map.selectTiles, view
state like layer.select: no map layer is active then, and picking one ends it). With the
Selected in Layers pop-up mode, a map click identifies that tile layer alone: a WMS layer
is asked by GetFeatureInfo, a vector tile layer, archive or MapLibre style lists its
features (basemaps and styles too, which topmost and visible leave out). Undo and redo keep
the pick; the Layers filter hiding it ends it.

Code review

I found no blocking bugs. The engine, undo, filter and UI paths I traced hold together, and the new tests cover the main flows. Two low-confidence concerns are posted inline, and the rest are minor.

Bugs

  • Pick follows map position, not name (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1485, low, ~25%). keep_tile_pick pairs maps by index and only then checks the name. If undo or redo reorders maps, a pick can land on the wrong map or be dropped. Inline suggestion attached.
  • Pick survives a map switch (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1610, low, ~35%). selected_tile checks only the current map, so a pick on map A reappears when you return to it. A new map clears the active layer (navigate.rs:748) but not picks. Inline question posted; if this is intended, it can stay.

Security

  • Nothing found. map.selectTiles input goes through find, which bounds-checks index. The new code adds no unwrap, expect or indexing outside tests.

Performance

  • Nothing material. selected_tile() runs per tile row per frame, which is negligible at typical tile-layer counts.

Quality

  • Duplicated index filter (nit, ~60%). The picked.is_none_or(|p| p == i) filter appears in both tile_features and info::requests. A small helper would keep them in step.
  • Mixed bool and Option arguments (nit, ~40%). lists_features and askable take a bool for "picked", and callers pass picked.is_some(). Consistent, but the Option<usize> is already in hand at most call sites.

AGENTS.md

  • No screenshot for a visible change (~50%). The Layers row now gets a picked highlight. AGENTS.md asks for screenshots with substantial visible changes, and the PR body has none. Whether this counts as substantial is a judgment call.
  • Otherwise compliant: no new unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code; docs updated; tests added; no new dependencies; no new user-visible literals in the UI path.

Bug (plausible, about 45% confidence): the pick is stored on each map's tiles, but this clearing only looks at the active map. keep_tile_pick (undo/redo) also restores picks on every map. So a pick made on map A survives a switch to map B, which sets an active layer there. If A is then revisited and has no map layers, navigate leaves active_layer as None, so selected_tile() returns A's stale pick and the row shows as picked. That contradicts "picking a map layer ends it for good."

Clearing on every map whenever a map layer is active closes the gap, and it costs one pass over the tile layers per command.

Suggested change

Quality (nit, high confidence): this line reads the picked: Option<usize> parameter, but the loop body a few lines down (line 420, outside this diff) shadows the name with the Vec returned by draw::pick, and line 437 then reads that Vec as picked.is_empty(). It compiles, since each iteration's shadow is scoped to the loop body, but one name means two things in one function. Renaming the local to hits (lines 420, 421 and 437) would remove the ambiguity.

Code review

Bugs

  • crates/engine/src/lib.rs (1669–1675): a tile pick on one map survives a switch to another map, because fix_active_layer clears only the active map's picks. Undo and redo restore picks on every map. Revisiting a map with no layers can therefore show a stale pick, which contradicts "picking a map layer ends it for good". Suggested fix: clear picks on all maps whenever a map layer is active. Confidence: about 45%, plausible. Inline comment posted.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/select.rs (420–437): the picked parameter of tile_features is shadowed by the Vec from draw::pick. It compiles, but one name means two things. Rename the local to hits. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted on line 416, because lines 420–437 are outside the diff hunk.

Security

  • No issues found. The new command only sets a view flag. Input goes through find, which bounds-checks indexes, and the new code has no unwrap or unsafe.

Performance

  • No meaningful issues. selected_tile() is called once per tile row, which is negligible for typical tile-layer counts.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant as far as I can check. There is no unwrap or expect in non-test code and no new user-facing string literals beyond command labels, which follow the existing convention. The new command is in the "Layers" group, like map.expandTiles. map.selectTiles is covered by the command hostile-params test. I did not run cargo xtask ci, so the build, clippy and tests are unverified.

Checked and found fine

  • The identify change keeps behaviour the same when no tile is picked. lists_features and askable match the old conditions for the default case.
  • keep_tile_pick handles renames and overlays of the same service.
  • The follow_layer_filter interaction and the tile_row click handling look correct.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add an undo case for a map rename that has a tile picked.

The assertions at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:9238-9260 rename a tile layer (map.setTiles with rename). They do not rename a map. No test in the suite picks a tile and then undoes map.rename, so the suite stays green whether keep_tile_pick keeps or drops that pick.

The current code drops the pick in this case. keep_tile_pick finds each restored map by its name in the pre-undo project (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1481-1500). After an undone rename, the restored map has the old name and the pre-undo project has the new name, so the lookup finds nothing and the pick is cleared. The same mismatch occurs on redo with the names reversed.

The doc comment on keep_tile_pick says the picked tile layer "stays the one picked (picking isn't an undo step)". Dropping the pick therefore contradicts that stated behavior. Decide the intended behavior first. Then add a test that picks a tile, renames its map, undoes the rename, and asserts selected_tile(). On the current code, that test fails, so the change to keep_tile_pick belongs in the same PR.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/tests.rs:
- Around line 9239-9240: Update keep_tile_pick to preserve the selected tile by
map identity across map renames during undo and redo, rather than relying on the
map name. Add a regression test alongside the existing rename assertions that
picks a tile, renames its map, undoes the rename, and verifies selected_tile()
still returns the picked tile.
