Projects: a log of every command run on a project, with its time, parameters and outcome (#797, part 1) - #947
Part 1 of #797, the engine part: a project log with one entry for each command run on the project, from any front end (the app, scripts, the AI Assistant, the CLI, Python, MCP), kept in the .rgis. It answers "what was done here, when, and with what?", for reproducing an analysis, reviewing work or writing a methods section.
Each entry holds:
Field
What it holds
at
when it started: UTC, in milliseconds since 1970
command
its id
params
its parameters, without secrets, large values clipped
ok
whether it succeeded
error
the error text when it failed, without secrets, clipped
millis
how long it took
New commands:
project.log {"since"?, "until"?, "command"?, "failed"?, "limit"?}: the entries, newest last. command is an id, or the start of one ending in a dot (layer.). limit is 100 by default and at most 1,000 (about 4 MB at the most), and count still says how many match.
project.exportLog {"path", "format"?: "csv" | "jsonl"}: writes the log out to a .csv or .jsonl path. Any other extension (a .json, a project) is refused whatever format is given, since JSON Lines isn't one JSON document; format is for a path with no extension and must match one given. CSV has one row per entry (a readable UTC time first), with the parameters as a JSON column.
project.clearLog: empties it, leaving its own entry, so a cleared log says it was cleared.
project.logCommands {"on"?: bool}: turns logging off or on for the project. What is already there stays.
Choices in this PR
Recorded in Session::run, at depth 0. Every front end reaches the project through it.
A command run by another (a script's lines, a model's steps, run_part) is inside its parent's entry: script.run is logged with its script.
run now wraps the old body (run_command), timing it and logging after it returns, so the entry has the outcome.
What goes in:
every command with spec.mutates, and every plugin command whose manifest asks for the Edit permission (a read-only plugin command is logged only when its parameters name a file, folder, address or connection);
a .view() command whose parameters name a file, folder, address or connection (PLACE_KEYS, as the plugin permission gate reads them): an export, a download, project.saveAs, service.layers;
project.save, project.clearLog and project.logCommands;
undo and redo, with the step they took back or brought back: {"step": "Run Script"}.
Reading and looking around (listing, describing, reading features, moving the view) is left out.
Outside the undo history, without copying it. The log lives in Project (field log), behind an Arc<Mutex<…>> that the project's undo snapshots share. It is read from the file, but the project's own serialization leaves it out (skip_serializing); Project::saved_text adds it as the file's last member, and so does recovery_text, the autosaved recovery copy, with its paths absolute as the rest of that copy. So comparisons of the project's JSON (the many tests that check a refused command changes nothing, which is now logged), packages and templates don't carry it. Consequences:
undoing a command never takes its entry back;
a snapshot copies nothing of the log;
a project opened or made new has a log of its own;
a template made from a project starts empty (template() resets it), and a package (.rgispkg) leaves it out.
Not undoable: clear and on/off. The proposal had project.clearLog undoable. With the log outside the undo history, an undo couldn't bring entries back without putting the log into the snapshots. So clearing is final, and it says so by leaving its own entry. Neither command adds an undo step. Both mark the project as changed, so they are saved.
Portable, as the project's sources are. Saved into a folder, the local paths in the log's parameters and errors are written relative to it (./data/a.tif), or as their file names where they can't be. So a project moved with its data keeps no trace of its old folder, as portable_projects checks. The open project keeps them as given. Each saved entry lists, as JSON pointers (relative), the texts the save made relative; reading the file makes only those absolute again, so a text the command was given as relative (./Maps and data) reads back as it was run.
Appending doesn't mark the project as changed. Otherwise every save would leave the project unsaved again (the save is logged after it writes). The entries are saved with the project's next save.
Documents given as text are kept as their size only: a map, a project, a capabilities answer or GeoJSON (a JSON or XML text past 200 characters) is logged as "(a document of N characters)". Such a document may hold secrets that no redaction finds inside it: s3_saved_imported_maps_layers_and_packages_never_bring_their_own_login caught an S3 source's token inside a map given to map.import.
Secrets never written. The other parameters are clipped first (texts at 4,096 characters, so a pasted GeoJSON or 64 MB of text costs little), then go through history::redacted, the redaction History's Copy as code applies. A secret cut short is still taken out, since what is left of it follows its name. The redaction:
addresses lose their keys and tokens;
a value under a secret's name is emptied.
The error text is clipped, then goes through history::redacted_text.
Bounded:
each entry's parameters are clipped to about 4 KB of JSON, in up to three tries: texts at 4,096 characters and lists at their first 100 items with a count (deeper than eight levels left out); then texts at 512 characters; then the first keys with short values only;
the error is clipped at 500 characters;
the log keeps its last 10,000 entries, the oldest dropped first, also when a file is read. Plugins' commands keep at most 1,000 of them, their own oldest going first, so a plugin can't push the user's entries out.
These are constants in project_log.rs (re-exported from project), stated in the docs.
On by default, saved with the project, as History saves its runs' parameters. A project that never logged anything saves exactly as before (log is skipped while empty and on). The docs say that a shared .rgis carries its log, and how to clear it.
A plugin can't empty the log or turn it off:project.clearLog and project.logCommands are in NEVER, so the AI assistant asks first. project.exportLog names a path, so a plugin needs the file permission for it.
The CSV is safe to open in a spreadsheet: a cell that starts as a formula does (=, +, -, @, a tab or a carriage return) gets a leading '.
Read in place: the entries are a VecDeque read under the log's lock. project.log copies only the entries it returns, and the export writes entry by entry. Saving copies the entries once, under the lock, and writes them after letting it go, so a command logged during an autosave doesn't wait on the writing (with 10,000 entries of up to 4 KB of parameters, that copy is at most about 40 MB, usually far less). Each entry is then made portable in place and written straight into the project's text, with no separate buffer for the log. That text is kept, with the folder it was written for: a save or autosave with nothing logged since writes it as it is, without copying or serializing the entries again. Any change to the log drops it.
Nothing in a file's log keeps a project from opening: it is read entry by entry, skipping one that doesn't read as an entry, keeping the last 10,000, each clipped and redacted as a new one is (a file may hold what RustGIS never wrote). A log that isn't one reads as empty.
Opening or making a project is logged in the project it opens or makes; a failed open stays in the log of the project that is open.
Not a replacement for History, which keeps its outputs and Copy as Python, Command or CLI. The log is a plain record and runs nothing again: long texts in it are clipped, so it says what was run, not always all of it.
Limits
The app's own UI (a Project Log view in the History pane, with a filter and Save As) is part 2, after this one is settled.
Not logged: UI state that isn't a command (pans and zooms with the mouse, panes), and ui.* commands, which never reach the engine.
A command that fails before it runs (an unknown id, a condition such as "nothing to undo") is logged only if it is one of the kinds above.
project.exportLog writes a file, so in the web app it fails as the other file exports do there.
The .rgis gains a log member, and FORMAT stays 1. An earlier RustGIS opens such a project as before (Project doesn't deny unknown fields) and saves it without its log. Keeping 1 means no build refuses the file; raising it would make earlier builds refuse it for the sake of a record they can't use. The user guide says so. If you'd rather mark files that carry a log, I'll raise it here.
Testing
rustgis-engine: new the_project_log_records_each_command_run_on_the_project. It checks that:
only the command run by itself is logged (project.rename and script.run in; info.project, map.zoomIn and the script's lines out);
entries survive an undo, and edit.undo is logged with the step it took back;
a failure is logged with its error;
a service address's token is taken out;
a 20,000-character name and a 5,000-item list come to at most 4 KB;
the log survives a save and is read back (and the autosaved recovery copy keeps it), and a project that never logged writes no log;
filters (command, failed, limit) work;
CSV and JSON Lines exports work;
clearing leaves its own entry;
when logging is off, nothing goes in; on again, it does;
the 10,000-entry cap drops the oldest.
The new test also checks that:
a document given as text (a QGIS project holding an S3 token) is logged as its size;
a saved log's paths are relative to the project's folder.
missing_stream_can_be_repaired_undone_redone_and_saved (portable_projects) checked that the saved file no longer names the repaired layer's old path. The log now records the commands that once named it, so the check reads the project without its log.
a_qgis_project_opens_as_a_map_and_a_qgis_style_styles_a_layer passes 64 MiB of text to project.importQgis. It is why the parameters are clipped before redaction: redacting the whole text first took hours.
cargo xtask ci on Windows (cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test --workspace, 2,342 tests, with RUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en), on the head of this branch (based on main at 2f08089).
Added a project log that records selected commands, outcomes, errors, and durations. Logging can be turned on or off, and entries can be filtered, cleared, or exported as CSV or JSONL.
Project logs are saved with projects and include safeguards to limit and redact recorded data.
Documentation
Added guidance on project logs, including how they differ from command history.
…ameters and outcome (opengeos#797, part 1)
Session::run logs each command run by itself that changes the project, or
reaches a file or a service (plus undo and redo, with the step they took
back), from any front end, into the project's log: when, the command, its
parameters (secrets taken out, documents as their size, large values
clipped), whether it worked, its error, and how long it took. At most
10,000 entries, the oldest dropped first.
The log sits outside the undo history (the undo snapshots share it) and
outside the project's own JSON: Project::saved_text adds it to the .rgis,
its local paths relative to the project's folder. New commands:
project.log, project.exportLog (CSV or JSON Lines), project.clearLog and
project.logCommands.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.
I reviewed the engine changes (Session::run, project.rs, project_log.rs, the new commands) and the staged AGENTS.md rules. I did not review the new tests or the docs page in detail, and I could not build or run anything. The design is sound: the log sits outside undo, secrets are clipped and then redacted, entries and the log are bounded, and nothing in the new code panics (no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe). Findings are below, with inline comments on three of them.
Bugs
Entry goes to the wrong project (low–moderate confidence).logs() and push run after run_command, so the entry goes into whatever self.project.log is by then. For project.new and project.open, the new project's log gets the entry, not the old one. If that is intended, document it. Otherwise capture the Arc handle before the run. (inline, crates/engine/src/lib.rs)
since and until are strict (low confidence).project.log accepts only integer u64 values. A float such as 1.7e12 is rejected with an error instead of being truncated. This may be fine.
Security
CSV formula injection (low confidence). The error and command cells are quoted but not neutralised, so a value starting with =, +, - or @ can still be evaluated by a spreadsheet. (inline, crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs)
No secret leaks found. Parameters are clipped before redaction, and document-like strings are logged as a size only. Errors are clipped and then redacted.
Performance
Per-push shift at the cap (moderate confidence).Vec::drain(..over) shifts about 10k entries on every push once the log is full. Use a VecDeque. (inline, crates/engine/src/project.rs)
Whole-log clones (moderate confidence).entries() clones the whole log. That is up to about 40 MB, since each entry can hold about 4 KB of parameters. It happens on every project.log call, on export, on each save and on each autosave via with_log. Filter under the lock for project.log. Consider whether the autosave copy needs the full log. (same inline comment)
Quality
ProjectLog has a len() but no is_empty(). Its is_empty means "empty and on", so the name is misleading. Clippy's len_without_is_empty may not fire because of that is_empty. Consider renaming it to something like nothing_to_save.
project.exportLog, project.clearLog and project.logCommands are built with .view(), although the first writes a file and the other two change saved state. This is deliberate and commented. It relies on the special-casing in logs() and on the plugin permission gate reading path, so add a test that a plugin cannot call exportLog without file permission.
The clip() helper truncates keys at 200 characters. Distinct keys that share a prefix will then silently collapse into one. This is very unlikely in practice.
AGENTS.md
Layering, wasm (web_time is used) and the no-panic rules are respected. hostile_params_never_panic should cover the new commands automatically. Please confirm it passes.
New dependencies: none.
No UI strings were added, so no tl! is needed in this part.

A plugin can't empty the log or turn it off (NEVER). The CSV export keeps a
cell that starts as a formula from being read as one. The log is a
VecDeque read in place under its lock (project.log filters there, the
export and the file write entry by entry), so nothing copies it whole.
project.log takes times as decimals and refuses a "failed" that isn't true
or false. The docs say where opening or making a project is logged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
I read the full diff and checked rustgis_map::graphics::civil for the CSV time column. I did not run anything, so none of this was exercised by tests or clippy. I found no definite bugs and posted no inline comments; the points below are low-severity.
Bugs
None found. I traced these paths and they look right:
the failed filter polarity (e.ok != f)
select's slice bounds (saturating_sub)
the log sharing through Arc across undo snapshots
the template reset in items.rs
the with_log splice into the project JSON (it checks ends_with('}'))
Security
Log contents (low confidence, ~35%). Redaction is heuristic: key names, URL shapes and redacted_text. The log is now persisted in the .rgis and is readable by plugins through project.log, which is not in NEVER. A secret under an unrecognised parameter name, or inside a short text, could end up in the file. Hiding documents, clipping values and blocking plugins from the clear and off switches all help. You could still consider also adding project.log and project.exportLog to NEVER, or making the first-save persistence opt-in.
Absolute paths (~30%).recovery_text and a save with no folder (dir == None) keep absolute local paths in log params and errors. The docs and comments say so, but users who share project files should know.
CSV export (positive).csv_cell guards against formula injection. Quoting covers =, +, -, @, tab and CR. This is good.
Performance
Deserialize (~25%).Deserialize for ProjectLog parses every entry from a hostile file before truncating to LOG_LIMIT. The MAX_BYTES cap on the file bounds this, so it is only a note.
Per-command cost.kept_params clips, redacts and serializes up to three times for every logged command. That is acceptable. Reads are skipped, and the 10k cap bounds the log.
select. It collects a Vec<&LogEntry> of all matches, up to 10,000 pointers. This is fine.
Quality
select indexing (~20%).matching[matching.len().saturating_sub(limit)..] cannot panic, but the "never crash" guidance prefers get(). matching.get(start..).unwrap_or_default() would follow it.
Whole-.rgis log.Project.log is skip_serializing and is written only through with_log. The logic is subtle: any new path that serializes Project directly silently drops the log. A comment or a test covering each save path would help.
export_log. The time_utc seconds are computed outside civil, because civil returns only HH:MM. It works, but it duplicates the time logic.
clear_log and log_commands. They are declared .view() yet set dirty. The docs call this deliberate; it is only a slight surprise.
Format names.json is accepted as an alias for jsonl in export_log, which may surprise users.
AGENTS.md
Never crash. I saw no unwrap, expect or panic. Mutex poisoning is handled with into_inner.
Wasm.web_time is used.
Hostile-params test. The hostile_params_never_panic test covers every command, so the four new ones are included. Please confirm that it stays green.
i18n. Only engine commands were added, so no UI strings are involved.
Docs and tests.docs/user-guide/workspace.md is updated and tests are added.

I reviewed the diff against the base branch and the AGENTS.md copy. I did not build or run the tests, since this environment has no build tooling. Four inline comments are posted. The rest is below.
Bugs
A malformed entry in a file's log makes the whole project fail to open, not just the log. Posted inline on crates/engine/src/project.rs:228. Confidence: medium.
.json is written as JSON Lines, which is not valid JSON. Posted inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs:97. Confidence: medium.
project.logCommands turning logging off leaves no trace of the switch-off itself. The test asserts this on purpose, so it is a design question for the author, not a defect. Confidence: low.
Security
Documents of 200 characters or fewer are logged verbatim after redacted_text, and only longer ones are reduced to their size. redact parses S3 addresses but I found no sign it reads a token embedded in a document's XML text, so a short document with such a token may get through. I did not confirm it is reachable. Confidence: low.
The .view() flag on clearLog/logCommands is posted inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs:42. The assistant's reaches and user_only checks do cover exportLog's path and the two log-changing commands, so I found no approval bypass. Confidence: medium for the contract question, no bypass found.
Performance
chars().count() scans whole strings on every logged command. Posted inline on crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:75. Confidence: low.
Each save into a folder clones and rewrites every log entry, up to about 40 MB worst case. Confidence: low.
export_log builds the whole output in one String, so the PR's claim that "nothing copies the whole log" is only partly true. Confidence: low.
Quality (nits, grouped)
ProjectLog's Serialize impl and LogState's Serialize derive are unused, because the field is skip_serializing. Confidence: medium.
portable_projects.rs now strips the whole log before its check. A stronger check would assert the log holds only the relative form. Confidence: low.
docs/user-guide/workspace.md says "one row an entry" and "one entry a line" where it should say "per". Also a stray line wrap after "isn't". Confidence: high.
matching[…] indexing in ProjectLog::select is in bounds by construction, but AGENTS.md prefers get() for hostile input. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in the new non-test code. Confidence: high.
web_time is used, so the wasm build should be fine. I could not run the wasm build here. Confidence: medium.
hostile_params_never_panic runs every registered command, so the new commands are covered without new junk parameters. Confidence: medium, since I did not run it.

…ntries lose their secrets as they are read (opengeos#797)
A file's log is read entry by entry: one that doesn't read as an entry is
skipped and a log that isn't one is empty, so the project still opens. Each
entry read is clipped and redacted as a new one is (a file may hold what
RustGIS never wrote, and a plugin may read the log). project.exportLog
refuses a .json path (JSON Lines isn't one JSON document); clipping stops
at the characters it keeps.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A secret written as JSON inside a string parameter is not redacted before it goes into the saved .rgis. script.run is the main case: its script text holds command lines with JSON arguments, and it is clipped at 4 KB but not redacted. The redaction only covers :// addresses and name=value pairs, and the document rule only covers text starting with {, [ or <. No test covers this. Confidence ~70%. (Inline: crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:36)
Bugs
project.logCommands {"on": false} leaves no entry, because push drops it once logging is off. Turning it on is logged, so the audit trail is asymmetric. Confidence ~80%, low severity. (Inline: crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs:154)
Performance
export_log builds the whole CSV or JSONL text in memory before writing. At the 10,000-entry cap that is roughly 45 MB, and saving into a folder clones every entry. Confidence ~60%, low severity.
Quality
Every plugin command is logged regardless of what it does. That contradicts the stated rule of leaving out reading, since plugin agents can call read-only view commands in volume and push user edits out of the 10,000-entry cap. Confidence ~55%. (Inline: crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:21)
Nit: docs/user-guide/workspace.md has an awkward line break ("Clear it first if that isn't / wanted").
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Checked: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code (the crate-level deny lints are present); web_time is used rather than std::time; no new dependencies; notify(format!(…)) matches the engine's existing convention; no new ribbon or dialog code.
Three inline comments are posted. I could not run the test suite here, so the leak in the first finding is from reading the code, not from a failing test.

… is recorded (opengeos#797)
The JSON objects a text parameter holds (a script's command lines) are
redacted before the rest. Turning logging off leaves its own entry, so the
log says why it stops. A plugin's command is logged by the same rule as the
others: when it changes the project, as it declares, or names a place. An
entry read from a file that already fits keeps its clipped lists' counts.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
project.clearLog while logging is off leaves no entry, because ProjectLog::push drops everything except project.logCommands when off. This contradicts the docs' "a cleared log says it was cleared." Low severity, high confidence. (crates/engine/src/project.rs, push)
bounded() on the file-read path skips the eight-level depth bound that clip() applies, so a hand-edited file can keep deeper params than the docs state. Low severity, high confidence. (crates/engine/src/project_log.rs, bounded)
Security
A JSON object inside a text, cut by the 4096-character clip, can leave a partial secret in the saved log. Medium confidence. Inline comment posted on project_log.rs:110 with a suggested fix and a regression-test request.
Performance
Each save and each autosave (recovery_text) serializes up to 10,000 entries, each up to about 4 KB. saved_json also clones every entry when saving into a folder. Medium-low confidence that this matters in practice. (crates/engine/src/project.rs, saved_json)
LogEntries::visit_seq runs bounded() (redaction and serialization) on every entry in a file, not just the last LOG_LIMIT. Low severity. (crates/engine/src/project.rs)
Quality
The PR body says "every plugin command" is logged. The code logs a plugin command only if it is mutating (PluginCommand::mutates, the Edit permission) or names a place. The docs in workspace.md match the code, so the PR body is the part that's off. High confidence.
The CSV formula-guard comment says "a tab or carriage return before them." The code only checks the first character. Nit, high confidence. (crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs, csv_cell)
The saved_text path now sends logs of any size through Project's JSON, so default-on logging changes every saved .rgis once a command is logged. The docs say this, so it's a design note rather than a defect.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe in non-test code that I could find. The Mutex poison handling is correct.
Engine notifications are not wrapped in tl!. The engine has no existing tl! use, so this matches the crate's convention.
No new dependencies, and I didn't see any ribbon or asset changes that need the guidelines.
I did not run cargo xtask ci or the tests; this review is by reading only.
Change size
Compared with main, merge base 2f08089 to PR head 3d4063a.
The from_import_json comment failed because that line is outside the PR's diff hunks. I'll move that finding into the summary, where it still gets reported with its file and line.
Code review
Bugs
crates/engine/src/project.rs:835 (from_import_json) and cmd/items.rs:181: project.fromTemplate and package open read a log from the file as-is. A shared .rgistemplate or .rgispkg can seed a new project with another author's entries. This contradicts the PR's rule that a template starts empty and a package leaves the log out. Fix: reset p.log to ProjectLog::default() in from_import_json. Confidence: medium. Not inline-commented because the line is outside the diff.
crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:646: entries read without a folder (openText, web, Python) keep their relative markers. A later folder-less write then carries them, and reopening that copy from disk can resolve them against the wrong folder. Narrow trigger. Confidence: low.
Security
No injection, unsafe-input, or secret-leak defects found. Params and errors are redacted and clipped before storage, the CSV is formula-guarded, export writes atomically, and plugins are blocked from clearing or switching the log. The NEVER claim holds: assistant/src/tools.rs:184 gates on user_only.
Performance
crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:636: every logged change invalidates the saved-text cache, so each save or autosave clones and re-serializes up to 10,000 entries (about 40 MB at the cap). Confidence: medium-low.
Quality
crates/engine/src/project.rs:183: the log is on by default and written into every shared .rgis, with heuristic redaction. A design concern rather than a code defect; consider off by default or a notice before the first save with a log. Confidence: medium.
crates/engine/src/cmd/project.rs:108: likely rustfmt diff (let by_ext = followed by match on the next line). Confidence: low-medium.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. No unwrap/expect in non-test code, no unsafe, wasm-safe time and fs use, no new dependencies, and the hostile-params test was extended consistently with other file writers. Engine messages are untranslated, matching existing precedent.
A project log read without its folder (openText, a package) kept the
relative markers that a save into a folder left. Saving that copy
again wrote them back, so opening the copy from a folder later
resolved texts that were relative to the original file against the
new folder. Such a read now clears the markers, and the texts are kept
as they are.
Also reformat the by_ext match in project.exportLog as rustfmt lays it
out.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
No confirmed correctness bugs found in the changed code. I checked the logging path in Session::run, the lock use in ProjectLog (no deadlocks; poisoned locks are recovered), the UTF-8 slicing in sql_secrets_removed, json_in_text_redacted and swapped, and the CSV time column. civil() returns HH:MM, so appending :SS is correct. Confidence: medium-high.
Security
Privacy: file contents can reach the saved log through layer.addDataBytes (medium-high, inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/project_log.rs). Its data parameter is base64 file content. clip only replaces a text with a size note when it starts with {, [ or <, and base64 does not, so the first 4 KB of each uploaded file is written into the shared .rgis. Secret redaction cannot see inside base64, so an encoded project with a token would be saved as well. This contradicts the claim in docs/user-guide/workspace.md that secrets are removed.
Performance
ProjectLog::write_json clones each entry's params and error on every save into a folder, only to support the collision check. The cost is proportional to the log (up to about 40 MB at the cap). Low confidence that this matters in practice; it could be done lazily. Confidence: low.
Quality
kept_params (object branch): a duplicate key skipped by continue makes out.len() < o.len() true even when nothing was left out, so the "…": "N keys in all" note can appear with no keys actually dropped. Also, insert("…") can overwrite a real key named …. Both are edge cases. Confidence: medium.
clip treats any string that starts with [ or < and is longer than 200 characters as a document, so a long expression or filter beginning with [ is replaced by a size note. This is a documented trade-off, but the doc comment should name it. Confidence: medium.
Naming and structure are otherwise clear. The now_ms move and the own_copy helper are good refactors. The hostile-params skip for project.exportLog is correct because the command writes a file.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new engine notifications use format!, which matches existing engine practice (s.notify(format!(...)) appears across the engine). No unwrap, expect, panic! or indexing in non-test code, and I found no unsafe. project_log.rs uses web_time, and the new code uses only the data and engine layers, which keeps layering intact. Documentation was updated in docs/python.md and docs/user-guide/workspace.md. No new dependencies. Confidence: high.
I did not run cargo xtask ci or the wasm build, since I have no shell here. Those checks have not been verified.

…d-by-word test runs on Linux
- Project::from_import_json starts the project with an empty log, whatever
log the file holds.
- The test of a text read word by word uses paths in the project's folder:
/mnt/... can be made relative on Linux.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rt's match back as rustfmt writes it
- A text past 200 characters made of base64 (layer.addDataBytes' data, a
data: address) is logged as its size: a secret's name can't be seen in it.
- cargo fmt puts the break after `let by_ext =` back; the reformat in
f537353 failed the cargo-fmt hook in CI.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks for the autofix in f537353. Logs read without a folder now forget their relative markers, and a_log_read_without_its_folder_forgets_its_relative_markers passes here. Three follow-ups are pushed on top of it:
cargo fmt: the reformat of let by_ext = in cmd/project.rs failed the cargo-fmt hook of Lint (pre-commit) on f537353. rustfmt 1.10.0 with the repository's rustfmt.toml puts the break after = back, so cc36653 restores what cargo fmt writes. It's a layout change only.
Linux test:the_project_log_writes_its_paths_relative_to_the_project_folder failed on Linux. It expected /mnt/x/a.tif to be written as its file name, but on Linux that path can be made relative (../../mnt/x/a.tif), which is right. b28538d uses paths inside the project's folder, written ./x/a.tif on every platform.
Templates and packages: also in b28538d, from the 12:34 review's summary. Project::from_import_json, used by templates, packages, map imports and style imports, now starts a log of its own, whatever log the file holds.
cargo xtask ci passes on cc36653: 2,467 tests, none failing.
The 12:34 review's other threads (the save copying the log, logging on by default) were answered in earlier rounds and are left to you.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Medium (Security), confidence: medium. Logging is on by default and the entries are written into every saved .rgis, which users commonly share. The redaction is heuristic: it works on secret-named keys, addresses, and CREATE SECRET options, and misses free text. The docs admit this, and the S3 test shows a token slipping past map.import once already.
Please consider opt-in logging, or at least a first-save notice that the file carries the log. A default-on record that travels with shared files is a larger exposure than the docs suggest.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (unclear): Whether logging should be opt-in, or a save should warn that the file carries the log, is a product decision for the maintainers. No change made here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Low (Quality), confidence: medium. When the log pushes a project past MAX_BYTES, project.save is refused outright. The user's work can't be saved until they run project.clearLog, which discards the log they were trying to keep. The log is optional metadata, so a fallback that saves without the log (or drops the oldest entries until it fits) and notifies would protect the work. The case is rare (it needs a project of roughly 470 MB or more), so this is a judgement call, not a blocker.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (unclear): Saving without the log, or dropping its oldest entries, changes what a save keeps, so it needs a maintainer's call. The refusal names the way out (project.exportLog, then project.clearLog). No change made here.
I read the whole diff, the new project_log.rs, and the call sites it touches (dirty-state tracking, CommandSpec construction, plugin reach gating, write_atomic). I could not compile or run the tests in this environment, so the compile-level checks are by reading only. I did not find a correctness bug that would corrupt data or crash. The findings are mostly design and contract issues.
Bugs
Low, confidence high: the read path (LogEntries::visit_seq) applies only the total 10,000-entry cap, not LOG_PLUGIN_LIMIT. A file with more than 1,000 plugin: entries keeps them all on reopen, so the docs' guarantee doesn't hold for loaded logs. The "plugins can't push user entries out" claim is also overstated, since plugins can hold up to 1,000 slots.
Security
Medium, confidence medium: logging is on by default and written into every saved .rgis, which users often share. Redaction is heuristic (secret-named keys, addresses, CREATE SECRET), so free text can still leak. I'd suggest opt-in, or at least a first-save notice.
Performance
Low, confidence high: once the log is full, each plugin command's push scans the full deque twice. A running counter would avoid this.
Quality
Low, confidence medium: project.save is refused outright when the log would push the project past 512 MB. A fallback that saves without the log, or trims it, would protect the user's work. This is rare, since it needs a project near 470 MB.
AGENTS.md
Nit, confidence medium: the let by_ext = line break in cmd/project.rs isn't rustfmt output, so cargo fmt --check may fail in CI. A suggestion block is attached.
Checked and fine: no unwrap/expect/indexing in non-test code, hostile_params_never_panic skips project.exportLog because it writes a file, no new dependencies, tl!/format! in notify follows existing engine practice, and the export writes to disk directly as other exports do.
Inline comments are posted on the five lines above.

…e guide says what the cap keeps
- LogEntries::visit_seq ends with cap_plugins: plugins' oldest entries past
LOG_PLUGIN_LIMIT go, in one pass.
- The user guide says plugins take at most 1,000 places, also in a log read
from a file, rather than that they can't push the user's entries out.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security / privacy (medium confidence, a design call for the maintainers): logging is on by default and the log is written into every .rgis, so a project shared as a file carries every logged command's parameters (paths, SQL, service addresses) and errors. The redaction only removes what a name or an address form reveals. A secret typed as plain words (a password in a note, a parameter with an unusual name) goes out with the file. The docs say so, but the default is the riskier choice for a file that is usually shared. Consider making logging opt-in for saved projects, or warning when a project with a non-empty log is shared or packaged.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (unclear): Same question as the logging-default thread: whether logging stays on by default for files that get shared is a maintainer's design call. No change made here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (maintainability): this new file is 886 lines and mixes four jobs: the log's storage and lock, the redaction and clipping of parameters, the portable-path rewriting on save and read, and the serde reading of files. The string-handling helpers (json_in_text_redacted, sql_secrets_removed, swapped, path_words) are the hard part, and they're easiest to review in their own module. Consider project_log/{mod,redact,portable}.rs. The new tests (about 450 lines) could also go in a module of their own rather than the 1.1 MB tests.rs.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): Splitting this 886-line file into modules is a refactor beyond this change, and it can't be compile-checked here, so the layout stays as it is. Fine as a follow-up.
json_in_text_redacted / last_secret_name (crates/engine/src/project_log.rs:265): a quoted secret key is not detected in an object that fails to parse, so its value is kept in the log. Example: s3.connect {region: "x", "secretAccessKey": "S3CRET",}. The name is followed by a closing quote, so the :/= check misses it. Inline suggestion posted. Confidence: medium-high. Traced by reading only, not run.
Security
Logging is on by default and written into every .rgis, so shared project files carry logged parameters (paths, SQL, addresses) and errors. Redaction covers only name- and address-shaped secrets. Documented, but the default is the riskier choice for a file that is usually shared. Suggest opt-in for saved logs, or a warning on share or package. Confidence: medium (a design call). Posted at crates/engine/src/project.rs:184.
Performance
Every logged command invalidates the saved-text cache, so each autosave after a change clones and serializes up to 10,000 entries (about 40 MB at the limit). Documented; low impact at normal log sizes. Confidence: low.
Quality
crates/engine/src/project_log.rs is 886 lines and mixes storage, redaction, portable-path rewriting and serde reading. Suggest splitting it into a module directory, and moving the roughly 450 new test lines out of the 1.1 MB tests.rs. Posted at project_log.rs:1. Confidence: high.
Nits:
kept_params inserts its "…" note key after the loop, so an input key literally named "…" would be overwritten. Harmless in practice.
json_in_text_redacted returns early on an unterminated object and drops the rest of the text. Only data loss, not a leak.
Code comments cite #797 and "part 1/part 2", which will go stale once the PR merges.
AGENTS.md
Checked: no unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe or raw indexing in non-test code; web_time is used; the layering holds; hostile_params_never_panic gets project.exportLog added to its skip list because it writes files. Engine notifications use format!, as existing engine code does, since the engine has no i18n.
Not verified: cargo xtask ci, the wasm build and the test suite. I have no build or execution tools here. The PR body reports a green Windows run.

A quoted secret key (`"secretAccessKey": …`) in a script line whose
object doesn't parse was missed by the redaction, so its value stayed in
the log. The name check now skips a closing quote before the `:` or `=`.
A push also scanned the whole log to count plugin entries once it was
at the cap. A running count, kept in step with the entries, replaces
that scan.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
I found no defects that would block merge. I reviewed the full diff by reading it and the surrounding code. I did not build or run the tests, since this review had no execution access. Nothing was posted inline because no finding met the bar for a line comment; the points below are minor.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked the undo and redo logging, the pending plugin path, the merged-step join, the cap and eviction logic, and the write cache keyed on generation. The shared-Arc log behaves as the design intends. package_project clones the project, but serialization skips the log, so nothing leaks. High confidence.
Low: project.save is logged after the file is written and does not mark the project dirty. The in-memory log therefore holds the save's entry before the file does, and the file catches up on the next save. This matches the PR's stated design. Medium confidence that it is the intended trade-off.
Security
None found. Secrets are redacted before anything is stored, and the CSV cells guard against formula injection. The known limit is that a secret written as plain words is not detected. The docs disclose this. High confidence.
Performance
Low: export_log chunks with VecDeque::skip(from), which is quadratic in entry count. At the 10,000-entry cap it is about 40 chunks, so this is negligible. High confidence.
Low: write_json copies up to 10,000 entries under the lock on each changed save. The PR documents this bound.
Quality
Low: kept_params inserts an ellipsis key "…", which would overwrite an input key of the same name. It is harmless, since both values are text. High confidence.
Low: clear_log marks the project unsaved and adds an entry even when the log is already empty. This is arguably correct, since the clear is recorded. Medium confidence.
Nit: export_log matches "csv" and "jsonl" as bare strings in several places. A small enum or constant would read more clearly, but the current code is clear enough. High confidence.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, unreachable!, todo! or unsafe in the non-test code I read. Test additions use unwrap, which is allowed there. High confidence.
Layering holds: the engine (L4) depends only on lower layers. now_ms and Instant use web_time, so there is no std::time in the new code. High confidence.
The hostile-params skip list gains project.exportLog, which writes files. Regression tests were added. High confidence.
User-visible messages use format!, the same as the rest of the engine, which is the existing convention. Medium confidence that this is acceptable under the AGENTS rule.
Not verified: the wasm32-unknown-unknown build. export_log uses std::fs directly, not Services. The docs say the export fails in the web app as other exports do. I did not confirm how those other exports write. Low confidence.

Summary
Part 1 of #797, the engine part: a project log with one entry for each command run on the project, from any front end (the app, scripts, the AI Assistant, the CLI, Python, MCP), kept in the
.rgis. It answers "what was done here, when, and with what?", for reproducing an analysis, reviewing work or writing a methods section.Each entry holds:
atcommandparamsokerrormillisNew commands:
project.log {"since"?, "until"?, "command"?, "failed"?, "limit"?}: the entries, newest last.commandis an id, or the start of one ending in a dot (layer.).limitis 100 by default and at most 1,000 (about 4 MB at the most), andcountstill says how many match.project.exportLog {"path", "format"?: "csv" | "jsonl"}: writes the log out to a.csvor.jsonlpath. Any other extension (a.json, a project) is refused whateverformatis given, since JSON Lines isn't one JSON document;formatis for a path with no extension and must match one given. CSV has one row per entry (a readable UTC time first), with the parameters as a JSON column.project.clearLog: empties it, leaving its own entry, so a cleared log says it was cleared.project.logCommands {"on"?: bool}: turns logging off or on for the project. What is already there stays.Choices in this PR
Recorded in
Session::run, at depth 0. Every front end reaches the project through it.run_part) is inside its parent's entry:script.runis logged with its script.runnow wraps the old body (run_command), timing it and logging after it returns, so the entry has the outcome.What goes in:
spec.mutates, and every plugin command whose manifest asks for the Edit permission (a read-only plugin command is logged only when its parameters name a file, folder, address or connection);.view()command whose parameters name a file, folder, address or connection (PLACE_KEYS, as the plugin permission gate reads them): an export, a download,project.saveAs,service.layers;project.save,project.clearLogandproject.logCommands;{"step": "Run Script"}.Reading and looking around (listing, describing, reading features, moving the view) is left out.
Outside the undo history, without copying it. The log lives in
Project(fieldlog), behind anArc<Mutex<…>>that the project's undo snapshots share. It is read from the file, but the project's own serialization leaves it out (skip_serializing);Project::saved_textadds it as the file's last member, and so doesrecovery_text, the autosaved recovery copy, with its paths absolute as the rest of that copy. So comparisons of the project's JSON (the many tests that check a refused command changes nothing, which is now logged), packages and templates don't carry it. Consequences:template()resets it), and a package (.rgispkg) leaves it out.Not undoable: clear and on/off. The proposal had
project.clearLogundoable. With the log outside the undo history, an undo couldn't bring entries back without putting the log into the snapshots. So clearing is final, and it says so by leaving its own entry. Neither command adds an undo step. Both mark the project as changed, so they are saved.Portable, as the project's sources are. Saved into a folder, the local paths in the log's parameters and errors are written relative to it (
./data/a.tif), or as their file names where they can't be. So a project moved with its data keeps no trace of its old folder, asportable_projectschecks. The open project keeps them as given. Each saved entry lists, as JSON pointers (relative), the texts the save made relative; reading the file makes only those absolute again, so a text the command was given as relative (./Maps and data) reads back as it was run.Appending doesn't mark the project as changed.
Such a document may hold secrets that no redaction finds inside it:
s3_saved_imported_maps_layers_and_packages_never_bring_their_own_logincaught an S3 source's token inside a map given tomap.import.Secrets never written. The other parameters are clipped first (texts at 4,096 characters, so a pasted GeoJSON or 64 MB of text costs little), then go through
history::redacted, the redaction History's Copy as code applies. A secret cut short is still taken out, since what is left of it follows its name. The redaction:The error text is clipped, then goes through
history::redacted_text.Bounded:
These are constants in
project_log.rs(re-exported fromproject), stated in the docs.On by default, saved with the project, as History saves its runs' parameters. A project that never logged anything saves exactly as before (
logis skipped while empty and on). The docs say that a shared.rgiscarries its log, and how to clear it.A plugin can't empty the log or turn it off:
project.clearLogandproject.logCommandsare inNEVER, so the AI assistant asks first.project.exportLognames apath, so a plugin needs the file permission for it.The CSV is safe to open in a spreadsheet: a cell that starts as a formula does (
=,+,-,@, a tab or a carriage return) gets a leading'.Read in place: the entries are a
VecDequeread under the log's lock.project.logcopies only the entries it returns, and the export writes entry by entry. Any change to the log drops it.Nothing in a file's log keeps a project from opening: it is read entry by entry, skipping one that doesn't read as an entry, keeping the last 10,000, each clipped and redacted as a new one is (a file may hold what RustGIS never wrote). A
logthat isn't one reads as empty.Opening or making a project is logged in the project it opens or makes; a failed open stays in the log of the project that is open.
Not a replacement for History, which keeps its outputs and Copy as Python, Command or CLI. The log is a plain record and runs nothing again: long texts in it are clipped, so it says what was run, not always all of it.
Limits
ui.*commands, which never reach the engine.project.exportLogwrites a file, so in the web app it fails as the other file exports do there..rgisgains alogmember, andFORMATstays 1. An earlier RustGIS opens such a project as before (Projectdoesn't deny unknown fields) and saves it without its log. Keeping 1 means no build refuses the file; raising it would make earlier builds refuse it for the sake of a record they can't use. The user guide says so. If you'd rather mark files that carry a log, I'll raise it here.Testing
rustgis-engine: newthe_project_log_records_each_command_run_on_the_project. It checks that:project.renameandscript.runin;info.project,map.zoomInand the script's lines out);edit.undois logged with the step it took back;log;command,failed,limit) work;missing_stream_can_be_repaired_undone_redone_and_saved(portable_projects) checked that the saved file no longer names the repaired layer's old path. The log now records the commands that once named it, so the check reads the project without its log.a_qgis_project_opens_as_a_map_and_a_qgis_style_styles_a_layerpasses 64 MiB of text toproject.importQgis. It is why the parameters are clipped before redaction: redacting the whole text first took hours.cargo xtask cion Windows (cargo fmt --all --check,cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings,cargo test --workspace, 2,342 tests, withRUSTGIS_LANGUAGE=en), on the head of this branch (based onmainat2f08089).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
