Part of qauth-labs/qauth#672. The qauth side (the ADR-018 §3 amendment and the operator docs for adding a plugin to the server image) is on the exec/issue-672 branch of qauth-labs/qauth.

Why

QAuth's plugin API (PLUGIN_API_ENABLED, contract qauth-auth-method/1-rc.0) needs a real plugin written the way a third party writes one: in its own repository, depending only on the published @qauth-labs/plugin-sdk, released to npm on its own version line, and installed by an operator on top of the released server image. GitHub sign-in is that plugin. GitHub offers no OpenID Connect sign-in, so the plugin uses OAuth 2.0 and GitHub's REST API.

What it adds

The plugin (src/): authMethod, the SDK's AUTH_METHOD_PLUGIN_EXPORT.

  • Authorization code flow with a fresh state and PKCE (S256), on /upstream/github/callback, a callback of this provider alone. With no ID token and no nonce, the state, the server's flow cookie and that URL bind the answer to the sign-in.
  • The code is redeemed at /login/oauth/access_token with Accept: application/json, then GET /user and GET /user/emails are read with the user:email scope and nothing more. The access token is used for those two reads, then dropped: never stored, logged or handed to the server.
  • The subject is the numeric user id under the issuing instance (https://github.com or the Enterprise Server's base URL), never the login.
  • Attributes: email is verified only for the address GitHub marks primary and verified. preferred_username (the login) and name are never verified.
  • baseUrl selects a GitHub Enterprise Server (<base>/login/oauth/…, <base>/api/v3). Its calls carry the admin egress source, so a private address works only when the operator's egress allowlist names it for the realm.
  • Every call goes through context.egress; lint forbids fetch and the Node network modules in src/. Calls that carry a credential follow no redirect.

Tests (test/): 28 unit tests against a fake GitHub that checks what GitHub checks, plus the SDK's contract test kit (checkAuthMethod) for github.com and for an Enterprise Server.

End-to-end suite (e2e/, run by bash e2e/run.sh):

  • Deployment: the released auth-server:0.2.0-rc.1 image, pinned by digest, with the packed plugin added by the operator recipe (nested install, --omit=peer, --ignore-scripts). It runs with PostgreSQL, Redis and a mock GitHub Enterprise Server over TLS, under one name the allowlist lists and one it does not.
  • How it drives the server: the suite configures the plugin through the admin API (DPoP-bound admin token, sealed secret, approvals) and signs in through the server's pages.
  • Acceptance criteria it covers:
    • account keyed by the numeric id;
    • rename and email change keep the same account;
    • only a primary and verified email is verified;
    • no access token in the database, the events or the logs (nor the client secret);
    • a wrong state is refused and the code is never redeemed;
    • a private base URL is refused until it is the allowlisted name;
    • with PLUGIN_API_ENABLED off, the boot skips the plugin and says why.

Toolchain: QAuth's own: Node 26.10 or later, pnpm (pinned through packageManager) with QAuth's 7-day release-age cooldown (pnpm-workspace.yaml; only @qauth-labs/plugin-sdk@0.2.0-rc.1 is excluded, until it matures), Oxlint with QAuth's rule set, Oxfmt with its options, and the TypeScript, Vitest, @types/node and zod ranges of QAuth's catalog.

CI and release (.github/workflows/):

  • ci.yml runs on Node 26: Oxfmt, Oxlint, typecheck, the tests with the contract kit, the build and the packed file list, then the e2e job.
  • release.yml, on a v* tag, does the following:
    1. requires the tagged commit to be on main, the tag to equal the package version and CHANGELOG.md to have the version's section;
    2. reruns the CI;
    3. packs the tarball once;
    4. stages it on npm through trusted publishing (pnpm builds and packs, npm stages), next for -rc.N and latest for a release, the way qauth's release-npm.yml does;
    5. drafts the GitHub release.
  • The stage goes live only when a maintainer approves it with 2FA.

Docs: README.md (marked Experimental, with the operator's install steps and the PKCE finding), RELEASING.md (including the one-time trusted-publisher setup) and CHANGELOG.md. The version is 0.1.0-rc.0.

How it was verified

  • CI on this pull request: check and e2e green. The e2e job ran all 12 tests of e2e/github.e2e.test.ts against the released auth-server:0.2.0-rc.1 image with the plugin installed.
  • The first e2e run failed at the server's boot: the released server requires EMAIL_FROM_ADDRESS in production. The deployment now sets it, and run.sh stops waiting when a server exits during its boot.
  • Locally:
    • pnpm run format:check, pnpm run lint and pnpm run typecheck are clean.
    • pnpm test: 28 tests pass, including checkAuthMethod for both configurations.
    • pnpm pack gives 11 files: dist/, README.md, LICENSE and package.json.
  • The packed plugin was loaded by the server's own plugin loader from a pnpm deploy tree of the server, laid out as in the image. It loaded as github (github), with clientSecret as its only secret path and the server's zod. With PLUGIN_API_ENABLED off it was skipped with the reason.

What to look at

  • src/method.ts and src/github.ts: the state and PKCE handling, the subject and issuer, the verified-email rule, what is logged.
  • src/config.ts: the baseUrl grammar and the egress source for Enterprise Server.
  • The operator recipe (README, e2e/Dockerfile) installs the plugin with npm in a throwaway build stage of the stock Node image: npm's nested layout puts the plugin and its SDK in one directory that can be copied into the server's /app/node_modules. pnpm's linked layout cannot be copied that way. Development, CI and the release use pnpm.
  • .github/workflows/release.yml: before the first release, a maintainer publishes a 0.0.0 placeholder and adds the trusted publisher (release.yml, environment npm), as RELEASING.md says.

Review round

A security review and a correctness review found nothing of medium severity or above. Fixed from their low findings:

  • the build stage of the install recipe (README, e2e/Dockerfile) and the mock's image are pinned by digest;
  • the README says what npm audit signatures proves and how to check the provenance's repository and workflow instead;
  • release.yml refuses a tag whose commit is not on main, and RELEASING.md asks for a tag ruleset.

Not fixed

  • ci.yml's header comment points at e2e/README.md, which does not exist; README.md's "Develop" section and e2e/run.sh describe the suite.
  • The comment on endpointsOf in src/config.ts calls github.com calls operator; the SDK downgrades them to remote_document, which changes nothing for a public host.
  • Attributes are written only when the account is created (server behaviour), so a later rename or a lost verified email is not reflected; a server-side follow-up, not this plugin.

TypeScript (strict, ESM, Node 22+), ESLint with type-checked rules,
Prettier and Vitest. The package depends only on @qauth-labs/plugin-sdk
from npm, pinned to the release candidate it is written against, and
takes zod as a peer so it shares the server's copy. The lint rules forbid
fetch and the Node network modules in src/: every outbound call goes
through the egress client the server hands the plugin.

The authorization code flow with a fresh state and PKCE (S256) on a
callback URL of this provider alone, the code redeemed at the token
endpoint asking for JSON, then GET /user and GET /user/emails with the
user:email scope only. The account is the numeric user id under the
GitHub instance that issued it, never the login. The email is verified
only when GitHub marks it primary and verified; the login and the display
name are unverified attributes. The access token is used for those two
reads and dropped. A baseUrl selects a GitHub Enterprise Server; its
calls carry the admin source, so the operator's egress allowlist decides
whether a private address is reached. Calls that carry a credential
follow no redirect.

A fake GitHub that checks what GitHub checks (client, code, redirect_uri,
PKCE verifier, bearer token, User-Agent) drives the method through
renames, email changes, the primary and verified rules, refusals and
outages, and the single use of a callback result. checkAuthMethod runs
for github.com and for an Enterprise Server.

e2e/run.sh packs the plugin, adds it to QAuth's released auth-server image
the way an operator does, and starts it with PostgreSQL, Redis and a mock
GitHub Enterprise Server on a private network, reachable under one name
the egress allowlist lists and one it does not. The suite configures the
plugin through the admin API and signs in through the server's pages. It
checks the account keyed by the numeric id, renames and email changes,
the verified-email rule, a wrong state, the allowlist, the boot with the
plugin API off, and that no access token reaches the database, the events
or the logs.

ci.yml runs format, lint, typecheck, the unit tests with the contract
test kit, the build and the tarball's file list on Node 22 and 26, then
the end-to-end suite. release.yml, on a v* tag of a commit on main whose
name is the package version, runs that CI, packs the tarball once and
stages it on npm through trusted publishing for a maintainer's 2FA
approval (next for a release candidate, latest for a release), then
drafts the GitHub release.

The README says what the plugin does and stores, the PKCE finding, and
how an operator installs it: the image recipe, AUTH_METHOD_PLUGINS,
PLUGIN_API_ENABLED, the admin API configuration and the Enterprise
Server allowlist. RELEASING.md gives the tag-driven release and the
one-time npm trusted-publisher setup.

The plugin identifies GitHub accounts only by numeric ID. If an operator later points a realm at a different GitHub instance, a user on the new instance who has the same ID could sign in to an existing account. Reject or guard baseUrl changes for realms with existing GitHub accounts, or include the issuer in the identity key, before relying on this for multiple instances. The README should also say that stored email verification is not refreshed after the account is created.

The plugin is part of QAuth's stack, so it is built the way QAuth is:
pnpm (pinned through packageManager) with QAuth's 7-day release-age
cooldown, Oxlint with QAuth's rule set and Oxfmt with its options instead
of ESLint and Prettier, Node 26.10 or later (the Node QAuth requires and
its image runs) and the same TypeScript, Vitest, @types/node and zod
ranges as QAuth's catalog. CI runs on Node 26 only. The release still
stages the tarball with npm, as QAuth's own release-npm.yml does: pnpm
builds and packs it.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TXFn52bsHEfBLq12Xdx7d3
The released server refuses to boot in production without
EMAIL_FROM_ADDRESS; the first CI run stopped there with a ZodError. The
deployment now sets it, and EMAIL_BASE_URL, as QAuth's upgrade test does.
run.sh stops waiting for a server that exited during its boot instead of
waiting out the two minutes, and packs the plugin and runs the suite with
pnpm.

eslint-plugin-simple-import-sort needed ESLint itself as a peer, so the
tree carried ESLint for one rule nothing else used. Oxfmt's sortImports
now orders imports: `oxfmt --check` fails on an unsorted import list and
`oxfmt` fixes it. No ESLint package is left in the lockfile.

Add a top-level types field next to the exports map.

The manifest declares types only through exports["."].types. Older TypeScript module resolution (node10) and some tools ignore exports. A consumer using one of them gets no types for @qauth-labs/plugin-github. Add the same path as a top-level types field.

Account identity ignores the GitHub instance. A baseUrl change can merge two different users.

The plugin uses the numeric GitHub ID as externalSub and stores the issuer only in rawClaims. QAuth's credential lookups match on realm_id, provider_type, and external_sub alone. The issuer in credential_data is never checked. Numeric IDs are unique only within one GitHub instance.

If an operator changes baseUrl for a realm that already has GitHub accounts, a user on the new instance who has the same numeric ID can sign in to the existing account. The README at lines 47-48 says the account is keyed under the issuing instance. The lookup does not enforce that.

Choose one of these fixes before merging:

  • Include the issuer in the identity key. Either encode the issuer in externalSub, or change the QAuth lookup to match on the issuer as well. Both options change persisted identity data, so existing github rows need a migration plan.
  • Keep the current identity key, and reject a baseUrl change for any realm that already has GitHub credentials. Then document that limit in the README.

In either case, add an e2e test. The test should create an account with a numeric ID under one baseUrl, then sign in with the same numeric ID under a different baseUrl. The test must show that a separate account is created, or that the sign-in is rejected.

Review comment at @README.md around lines 47 - 48:
Resolve the instance-scoped identity mismatch described by the README: either
include the GitHub issuer in the identity lookup/key and provide a migration
plan for existing GitHub credentials, or reject a baseUrl change for realms with
existing GitHub credentials and document that restriction. Add an end-to-end
test that creates an account with a numeric GitHub ID under one baseUrl, then
verifies signing in with that ID under another baseUrl creates a separate
account or is rejected. Preserve the existing credential lookup safeguards; the
supplied diff does not identify the implementation symbols needed to prescribe a
lower-level change.

**Attributes.** When the account is created, QAuth stores:

| Attribute | From | Verified |
| -------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| `email` | the address GitHub marks **primary** | only when GitHub also marks it **verified** |

Document that stored attributes are not refreshed.

The table describes attributes at account creation. It does not say that later sign-ins leave them unchanged. Add that statement so operators do not treat the stored email verification as a current GitHub assertion.

📝 Suggested README addition

 Only the primary address is taken. An address that is verified but not
 primary is not used, and a list with no primary address, or two, gives no
 email at all.
+
+Later sign-ins do not update these attributes. If the email changes, or GitHub stops marking it verified, the stored values can stay the same.

Update the account-attribute documentation near the Attributes table to state
that later sign-ins do not refresh stored attributes, so a stored email or
verification status may no longer reflect GitHub’s current values.

The README's recipe ran npm install in a fresh project, so the ranges of the
plugin's dependencies resolved again at every build. It now writes a
lockfile once with npm install --package-lock-only, has the operator read
and commit it, and installs with npm ci, as QAuth's own image docs now do.
The e2e Dockerfile says why it installs the freshly packed tarball instead.
