Summary

  • Version 1.10.0 → 1.11.0 (gradle.properties).
  • Dependencies: readingbat-core / readingbat-kotest 3.4.0 → 3.5.0, core-utils 3.2.2 → 5.1.1, Kotlin 2.4.10 → 2.4.21, ben-manes versions plugin 0.64.0 → 0.66.0.
  • Gradle wrapper 9.7.1 → 9.8.1 via make upgrade-wrapper: gradle-wrapper.properties, gradle-wrapper.jar, gradlew.bat, and the gradle-wrapper catalog key.
  • make versions / make versions-all, matching canvas-cache:
    • A custom outputFormatter on DependencyUpdatesTask in build.gradle.kts makes make versions print only outdated dependencies, any that couldn't be checked, and a newer Gradle release.
    • The new make versions-all passes --output-formatter=plain to get the plugin's full report.
  • org.gradle.jvmargs in gradle.properties: 4 GB Gradle/Kotlin daemon heap, heap dump on OOM, UTF-8 encoding.
  • Docs: CHANGELOG.md, RELEASE_NOTES.md (v1.11.0), llms.txt, README.md, CLAUDE.md.

No DSL, content, or runtime source changes; the build still targets JDK 25.

Notes for review

  • core-utils 5.x drops or changes some public API. Removed or changed: ScopeFunctionsKt, ThreadSafeSingleAssignVar, waitForPortAvailable (now returns Boolean), toCreated, and a few constructors. The template doesn't use any of them, and readingbat-core 3.5.0 moved its common-utils modules to 5.1.1, so dependencyInsight shows the whole classpath on 5.1.1 with no conflict resolution.
  • New Gradle 9.8.1 deprecation warning. Every build prints "Deprecated Gradle features were used…". It comes from detekt 2.0.0-alpha.6 calling Configuration.setVisible(), which is scheduled for removal in Gradle 11. It's documented in the release notes.
  • make versions no longer writes build/dependencyUpdates/report.txt. make versions-all still does.

Test plan

  • make tests: 3/3 ContentTests specs pass
  • make lint: lintKotlin + detekt clean
  • make uberjar: builds build/libs/server.jar; java -jar starts in ~2s and /, /content/python, /content/java, /content/kotlin all return 200 with no exceptions logged
  • make versions prints All dependencies are up to date; make versions-all writes the full report
  • ./gradlew --version reports Gradle 9.8.1; configuration cache entry stored then reused
  • CI passes

Bump the project version 1.10.0 -> 1.11.0 and refresh the dependency
catalog: readingbat-core / readingbat-kotest 3.4.0 -> 3.5.0, core-utils
3.2.2 -> 5.1.1, Kotlin 2.4.10 -> 2.4.21, and the ben-manes versions
plugin 0.64.0 -> 0.66.0. Upgrade the Gradle wrapper 9.7.1 -> 9.8.1
across gradle-wrapper.properties, gradle-wrapper.jar, gradlew.bat, and
the gradle-wrapper catalog key. readingbat-core 3.5.0 is on the
common-utils 5.1.1 line, so the runtime classpath agrees on 5.1.1 with
no conflict resolution.

Rework dependency reporting to match canvas-cache: a custom
outputFormatter on DependencyUpdatesTask makes `make versions` print
only outdated dependencies, unresolvable ones, and a newer Gradle
release, and a new `make versions-all` target passes
--output-formatter=plain for the plugin's full report.

Set org.gradle.jvmargs in gradle.properties (4 GB Gradle/Kotlin daemon
heap, heap dump on OOM, UTF-8 encoding).

Document all of the above in CHANGELOG.md and RELEASE_NOTES.md, refresh
versions and target descriptions in llms.txt, and describe the
versions targets in README.md and CLAUDE.md.

No DSL, content, or runtime source changes; the build still targets
JDK 25.
