Train 37a: entry points in --for (EP-MANIFEST) + map stem rows need a complete namesake (MAP-STEM-TIGHT) - #443
Train 37a: two answer lanes, --for entry points from Python packaging manifests and a tighter map stem row.
What changes for answers
Entry points in --for (EP-MANIFEST): when --for shows a Python def that a packaging manifest registers, it adds <ep p= l= group=> after the file tail (setup.cfg [options.entry_points], pyproject [project.entry-points.*] / scripts / gui-scripts, poetry plugins and scripts). Each entry carries its in-tree def= (else external="1" / unresolved="1"; a module that is missing at its import path stays unresolved, never a suffix match) and the used_at= / used_in= consumers, which are matched by literal text, not resolved. Default regime, XML only; RIPWIRE_NO_EP_MANIFEST=1 turns it off. On flake8 ("how is a formatter registered") the answer goes from partial to complete (+1.3 KB). We found the gap by comparing answers with graphify (Apache-2.0); the mechanism is ripwire's own and no code was taken.
Map stem rows need a complete namesake (MAP-STEM-TIGHT): a stem row is printed only for a class whose name words (two or more) all appear in the file name, and only a complete namesake that is already shown holds the slot. Over the 14 map questions the stem rows cost +5.7 KB instead of +16.9 KB, with no grade lowered (starlette's FormParser is kept). RIPWIRE_NO_MAP_STEM_TIGHT=1 restores the loose rule. The idea that a cluster lists its members came from graphify's report; no code was taken.
Train commit 01e6b5c (showcase capture 2026-10-26 + COMMANDS.md regenerated once on the composed binary).
CR pre-pass (CR_LENS probes + one Sonnet pass): a735327 + b9fdf70 (a kept incomplete class such as FormParserError no longer holds the stem slot of the complete FormParser; holdsStemSlot; mapstemcheck F1/F2 red first, F3 control), f7dcf5b (readmedriftcheck G4-THIN control for the legend-literal half of its row filter), 9eaa7f1 (note order in cppqualcheck).
No version bump (neither lane changes parse or cache output). changelog.d: ep-manifest-entry-points.md (new) and map-stem-row.md (updated) carry the graphify credit. All commits authored joyful-ii-V-I noreply.
Checks (plain dev builds): epmanifestcheck, mapstemcheck (also under ASan), readmedriftcheck, the full-suite-only gates and compactlegendcheck alone pass; quality-delta gating 0. Our 163-question replay against train 36: 17 answers change (flake8-02/-11/-13 for EP-MANIFEST; the 14 map answers for MAP-STEM), 146 byte-identical, no grade lowered, flake8-02 becomes complete. The pre-pass fix changes two of the map answers again (kysely-01 +87 B, ninja-01 +29 B: complete-namesake stem rows that the first build suppressed); those two are not re-graded.
--for output can now show Python entry-point registrations from supported setup.cfg and pyproject.toml manifests, including resolved targets and code locations. Output is limited to relevant shown definitions and single-root results.
Changes
Map stem rows now require a complete namesake with at least two matching name parts. Set RIPWIRE_NO_MAP_STEM_TIGHT=1 to restore the previous looser matching rule.
Documentation
Updated the documented gate-script and compile-time cap counts.
A ranked Python def that a manifest entry point names now carries its
registration: <ep p= l= group= used_at= used_in=> with every entry of the
group (<e n= target= def=|external=1|unresolved=1>). Readers: setup.cfg
[options.entry_points], pyproject [project.entry-points.*],
[project.scripts], [project.gui-scripts], [tool.poetry.plugins.*],
[tool.poetry.scripts]. used_at= lists code that compares or loads the
group literal (.group ==, entry_points(group=), .select(group=),
iter_entry_points), by literal text; no consumer, no used_at=.
Default regime and XML only; RIPWIRE_NO_EP_MANIFEST=1 turns it off.
Gate: test/epmanifestcheck.sh.

…lete namesake
The "already held" check in addMapStemRows compared a kept class's raw shared-subtoken
count, so a kept FormParserError (form+parser of form+parser+error) held off the complete
FormParser. Under the tight rule a kept class holds the slot only if it is itself a
complete namesake. Red-first: mapstemcheck F1/F2 (fixture mapstemheldfix) fail on the
train binary; F3 keeps the kept-complete-namesake case. S1 replay: 2 more rows differ
from the train (kysely-01 +4 stem rows, ninja-01 +1), +116 B.

…eral half
Mutation (drop the "k" not in attrs test so the legend's literal <s t= n= ...> counts as a
row) stayed green: control (a) pads 5 ranked rows, and 5 + the literal is still below the
presence guard of 10. Control (c) uses 9 ranked rows, so the literal alone would reach the
guard; verified red under the mutation, green on the gate.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds Python entry-point manifest details to eligible CLI --for XML answers and tightens map stem-row matching. It also updates tests, documentation, published gate-script and cap counts, and related regression checks.
Changes: Python Entry-Point Manifests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse manifests and discover targets src/epmanifest.h
Adds readers for supported setup.cfg and pyproject.toml entry-point tables. Adds consumer-site detection and target resolution.
Select and render manifest groups src/epmanifest.h
Selects qualifying manifest groups and renders resolved entries, consumer details, cap metadata, and legend clauses.
Eligible XML answers include manifest output after the file tail and before caller-hop output. Regression checks and documentation cover the feature, its limits, and the updated inventory counts.
Stem candidates require at least two qualifying name subtokens, all present in the file stem. Kept types suppress candidates according to the selected tight or loose rule.
Test and document stem-row behavior test/mapstemcheck.sh, changelog.d/map-stem-row.md
Checks tight and loose matching, kept-row behavior, and text and JSON output. Documents the rule and updated measurements.
Updates gate-script counts to 715, adds two checks to the regression list, changes map-row checks to count ranked data rows, and aligns base-binary comparison options.
The manifest can describe a definition absent from the displayed signatures, so its output should be corrected before merging. The legend checks and avoidable work are narrower follow-ups.

Return early when there are no manifests or no picked groups.
renderForEpManifest runs for every eligible --for answer. Without an early return, a repository with no entry-point manifest still pays for these steps:
resolveEpTargets calls symbolsByFile. That call allocates one vector per file and walks every symbol.
consumerLineIndex repeats the same walk, even when consumers is empty.
Both steps produce nothing in that case, and the output stays byte-identical. Return before them.

In renderForEpManifest, return out before calling resolveEpTargets when
manifests is empty, and return out after pickEpGroups when picks is empty. This
avoids unnecessary symbol and consumer indexing while preserving the existing
output.

…row (CodeRabbit nitpick, review 5657320268)
renderForEpManifest no longer walks every symbol twice (resolveEpTargets,
consumerLineIndex) for a repository with no entry-point manifest. Output is
byte-identical: 43 argv compared against 8ed64e6.

…e ep clause alone (CodeRabbit 4381174525, 4381174537)
4381174525: the manifest was picked from the ranked head before packSignatures
ran, so a row the budget gate dropped could still register a group (and the
legend said it registers a shown row). It is re-picked from the head rows in
shownSigIds once the sigs block, including a soft-target refill, is final; a
manifest left empty takes its clause with it. New arms R1-R3 (R1/R2 red before).
4381174537: the L1 legend check searched the whole legend, so p= l= n= target=
passed on the root's definitions; it now searches the ep clause alone, by whole
attribute name, and requires the six capped attributes. L1-MUT proves it can fail.

…1174514)
Under RIPWIRE_NO_MAP_STEM_TIGHT=1 the stem row needs one shared name word, so the
tight clause (2+ name words, all in the file name) was false. The loose run now
carries its own clause; the default legend is unchanged. compactlegend.h's stem
reading is never printed beside a map (the XML comment is spelled in both
dialects), so it needs no loose twin. New arms E9-E12.

…t (quality-delta verbosity 58 to 66 after the early returns)
The per-group element text moves into epdetail::appendEpGroup; output unchanged.

CodeRabbit reviewed 8ed64e6 (review 5657320268): three inline comments and one review-body nitpick. All four were real and are fixed in the commits below, pushed as one follow-up. No re-review was requested.
24e9c81 ep-manifest: renderForEpManifest returns early when there is no manifest or no picked group (nitpick; output byte-identical)
2315929 ep-manifest: the groups are picked from the rows emits, not the requested head (4381174525); the L1 legend check searches the ep clause alone and requires the capped attributes (4381174537)
9efcad3 map stem: the legend states the matching rule the run selected, tight or RIPWIRE_NO_MAP_STEM_TIGHT (4381174514)
f57e373 ep-manifest: appendEpGroup keeps renderForEpManifest at its old height (quality-delta verbosity)
Default answers are unchanged: 40 of 42 compared argv are byte-identical to 8ed64e6; the two that differ are --pack-budget-bytes=1 runs where drops the row a group registers, which is the fixed behaviour.
Both changelog fragments keep their graphify credit lines (ideas only; no code was taken).
