Problem

The static publisher saves its full signed upload receipt in spacefast_wordpress_publish_state after each uploaded file. A large target page therefore produces quadratic option-write volume, which can trigger WordPress.com's Atomic per-option write limiter. The publisher also ignores update_option() failures, so a blocked cursor checkpoint causes the same target to be uploaded repeatedly.

This remains present after #14; the transport changes in #13 do not address receipt persistence.

Changes

  • Keep signed upload instructions in a separate, non-autoloaded option, written only when instructions change. Per-file progress contains only compact counters and identifiers.
  • Check persistence results while accepting WordPress's unchanged-value no-op.
  • Persist resume_pending before replacing instructions, so an interruption between receipt and cursor writes forces a refresh instead of using the wrong page's cursor.
  • Migrate existing inline receipts without declaring a new version. Remove signed instructions at finalization, reset, completion, and uninstall.
  • Prepare version 0.5.9. This PR does not publish a release or change any customer site.

Validation

  • ./bin/test.sh: PASS, including PHP lint, behavior tests, ZIP validation and deterministic rebuild.
  • ./bin/test-wordpress.sh: PASS on real WordPress 6.5 / PHP 8.1, including host-blocked writes via pre_update_option, durable-cursor recovery, and non-autoloaded target storage.
  • A 1,000-target / 1,188,849-byte receipt now produces 376,494 bytes of progress writes (maximum checkpoint 378 bytes), with the receipt written once, rather than rewriting it after every file.
  • The new large-receipt regression fails against the original publisher and passes with this fix.
  • Existing tests cover paged refreshes, expired instructions, transient retry/backoff, and completion recovery; new tests cover legacy migration, refused progress and target writes, refresh-pending recovery, and cleanup.

Recovery / release notes

Merging this is not sufficient to unblock an already affected site. Stop the old publishing writer, install the fixed release, have WordPress.com/Atomic support inspect and clear the existing block for spacefast_wordpress_publish_state, then start a fresh export. Do not disable the platform limiter or broadly clear unrelated blocked options. The exact current limiter threshold and duration have not been independently verified, and this was not tested on the affected customer site.

Issues

All clear! No issues remaining. 🎉

1 issue already resolved
  • Legacy-state migration clears a pending upload-session refresh. A 0.5.8 state with inline upload and resume_pending = true passes through save_upload(), which resets the flag to false. The next file is then sent to the expired signed target, costing one wasted 401/403 request before recovery. (fixed by commit c718eae)

📝 Walkthrough

The publisher stores signed upload instructions separately from per-file progress. Publishing, polling, and retry checkpoints use the updated persistence paths. Tests cover migration, failed writes, resumption, and cleanup. The plugin version advances to 0.5.9.

Changes: Static upload persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Separate upload storage and migration
includes/class-spacefast-static-publisher.php, tests/behavior.php
The publisher loads upload instructions from a dedicated option and migrates legacy inline state. Separate helpers save upload instructions and progress. Tests cover migration and option-write behavior.
Publishing lifecycle and release updates
includes/class-spacefast-static-publisher.php, tests/behavior.php, tests/acceptance/wordpress.php, readme.txt, spacefast-wordpress.php, uninstall.php
Publishing, polling, retries, reset, and finalization use the split persistence paths. Tests cover upload progress, failed writes, resumption, and cleanup. The plugin version and changelog are updated, and uninstall removes the upload option.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep an existing resume_pending flag when you migrate old state.

save_upload always sets resume_pending to false at the end. That is correct after resume and after creating a new version. It is not correct for the migration call at Line 36. Old 0.5.8 state can contain 'upload' => <expired targets> together with 'resume_pending' => true if a refresh failed temporarily after a 401/403. After migration, $state is passed by reference, so the check at Line 109 sees false. The publisher then sends a file to an expired signed link instead of refreshing first.

It recovers only if the storage service answers with upload_http_401 or upload_http_403. Any other non-retryable error code goes through retry_or_throw and ends the publish.

Store the flag before overwriting it and restore it at the end. The other callers have no pending flag at this point, so their behavior stays the same.

Already fixed in c718eae. The migration call preserves its existing resume_pending flag; newly created or refreshed instructions clear it. The regression test verifies that migration refreshes before sending any expired target. All CI checks pass on that commit.
