Why

Setting up an OpenClaw agent hit a run of snags. Our plugin started its hooks process inside short-lived OpenClaw CLI commands (2026.7.1 and similar), so the install hung. Agents also missed servers added later, and the wizard had rough edges.

What changed

Before

openclaw plugins install hung after installing our plugin.
The script always asked for a Gateway restart and to store SPEAKEASY_AGENT_KEY.
An "All servers" key stored the servers that existed when it was issued.
Ticking a remote server grew its row.
Editing an agent's MCP Authentication step showed per-client blocks; saving assigned no connection.
Manual OpenClaw setup was a long subshell.

After

The plugin starts its hooks process on the first hook. hooksGeneratorVersion is bumped to republish it.
Restart and key notes appear only when needed.
An "All servers" key stores the project wildcard plus the owner's blocks.
list_servers explains "unknown" and points to connection_status.
Rows keep their height.
Editing shows the same row as creating, and saving assigns your connection.
Manual setup is one openclaw mcp add, with the key read from the environment.

Gutternote review steps

Identity → Agents → New agent identity. Tick a remote server: its row keeps its height.
Open an existing agent → Edit → MCP Authentication: same row as when creating.
Install → Manual: the OpenClaw block is one command.
