fix(plugin): align resource capabilities and routing - #743
Advertise supported resource operations and keep the local connection panel readable independently of backend state.
Validate resource and template catalogs while preserving pagination, provider metadata and protocol errors. Normalize local scheme/authority aliases and reject local URI claims in backend catalogs and read contents without rewriting resource paths.
Retain general backend templates with concrete local resources taking precedence. Cover discovery, routing and connection changes using SDK transports and packaged plugin contracts, and document the ownership rules.
Testing
Core build, packaged plugin contracts with source coverage, TypeScript checking, focused ESLint and formatting pass on macOS with Node 26. CI checks the Linux/Node 24 matrix.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The plugin serves its connection panel independently of backend state and routes resource discovery through dedicated handlers. Backend catalogs are validated, reserved UI URIs are rejected, and results from obsolete backends are not returned. Tests, qualification, and installation documentation cover the resource protocol.

Summary
Local panel and resource routing packages/gitlab-mcp/src/plugin/panel.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/src/plugin/server.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/tests/plugin/resources.test.cjs, packages/gitlab-mcp/docs/guide/installation/codex.md
The plugin defines its reserved UI namespace, serves the connection panel without a backend, and returns a resource-not-found error for unknown local resources. Resource subscriptions are not advertised or handled. Tests and documentation cover local reads, request validation, and URI ownership.
Backend catalogs and response validation packages/gitlab-mcp/src/plugin/server.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/tests/plugin/resources.test.cjs
Backend resource and template responses use validation and preserve provider fields, pagination, and errors. Resource listings reject URIs in the reserved namespace. Tests cover catalog behavior and providers without resource support.
Connection changes and forwarded results packages/gitlab-mcp/src/plugin/server.ts, packages/gitlab-mcp/tests/plugin/resources.test.cjs, packages/gitlab-mcp/scripts/qualify-codex-plugin.mjs
Forwarded requests are checked against the active backend and its revision. Tests cover notifications and in-flight requests during backend changes. Qualification now runs the resource tests.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #739 is open and directly linked. The implementation removes subscribe from advertised resource capabilities and returns MethodNotFound for subscription requests. It serves CONNECTION_PANEL_URI without backend initialization and returns -32002 for unknown local URIs. It provides empty catalogs when resources or templates are unavailable, forwards validated paginated catalogs and provider metadata, preserves backend errors, and rejects reserved-namespace resources and templates on each page. forward checks that the backend remains current. The SDK-client tests cover disconnected and connected resource operations, pagination, URI aliases, collisions, provider errors, notifications, and obsolete connections. The qualification script runs the resource contract test.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support issue #739. server.ts implements resource routing, validation, capability advertisement, catalog forwarding, collision checks, and stale-backend rejection. panel.ts exposes the existing local namespace without changing the panel URI. resources.test.cjs adds the required bridge and SDK-client regression coverage. The qualification script includes that test in packaged contracts. The documentation records the implemented URI ownership rules. No unrelated product behavior or live backend operation appears in the reviewed changes.

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 4 files. Exercise real SDK clients on both sides of the packaged bridge. Reproduce unsupported subscriptions, unavailable template discovery and local URI collisions.
Keep local resource reads independent of backend state, preserve provider catalogs and errors, and reject reserved resource identifiers. Advertise only supported resource operations.
Closes#739
Reject templates using the local UI namespace on every catalog page. Require the SDK template-list shape while preserving provider extensions. Add regression coverage for reserved names, malformed catalogs and extension metadata.

- Line 114: Update the namespace guards in readResource and the resource-listing
and template-filtering paths to compare URIs case-insensitively, so uppercase
variants of the reserved UI namespace are consistently rejected or excluded.
Preserve the existing guard behavior for other URIs.
- Line 117: The backend read path in forward currently returns results without
checking their content URIs. Validate the forwarded result’s contents against
CONNECTION_PANEL_NAMESPACE and reject it using the established reserved-URI
handling if any string URI matches; leave items without a string URI and results
with no reserved URI unchanged.
- Around line 138-139: Update the resource-template guard around
response.resourceTemplates so it rejects a template only when its possible
expansions can produce a URI in CONNECTION_PANEL_NAMESPACE. Account for
variables anywhere in the template, including before the namespace, and allow
templates whose expansions cannot reach that namespace; do not rely on raw
startsWith checks or literal-prefix approximations that reject unrelated
templates.

Compare the local scheme and authority case-insensitively without folding resource paths. Add regression tests for local reads and both paginated catalogs.
Reject local namespace claims in backend resource-read responses, including case aliases and later content items. Preserve unrelated provider payloads. Include regression coverage proving the missing rejection.
Document that concrete local resources take precedence over general backend templates. Verify initial and continuation catalogs, provider reads and local resource routing without restricting general templates.

Recognize encoded unreserved authority characters across reads, catalogs and backend contents. Carry the original path offset instead of assuming a fixed prefix length. Bound normalization to the known authority size and preserve paths, reserved delimiters and general templates. Include regression coverage for aliases and unrelated URIs.
