Summary

  • The XML input documentation describes the parser as it now works: an xmloxide parse of an input with no <!DOCTYPE text enforces the policy limits as it reads and builds the semantic arena directly; other parses pass one strict lexical scan first.

Changes

  • docs/xmldsig.md, docs/xmlenc.md: node, depth and namespace-binding limits are refused before the exceeding node is stored, by the parser (xmloxide, input without the <!DOCTYPE text) or by the one scan (any other input, roxmltree, differential), which also charges entity replacement work.
  • docs/xml-backend-patches.md: xmloxide parses into the semantic arena with no intermediate DOM, reads replacement text into the same tree with the reference's range, and recognizes a DOCTYPE only by its case-sensitive keyword; roxmltree is projected through the scan's positions.
  • docs/benchmarks.md: the projection phase is measured for roxmltree only.

Testing

The documentation gate (rustdoc, doctests and the policy-bound example) passes on macOS; CI runs the full matrix.

Closes #387

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how XML parser backends handle parsing, projections, and resource limits, including differences for inputs containing <!DOCTYPE.
    • Documented that resource limits apply during parsing and to staged copies, adapter parses, and committed generations, with refusal before an over-limit node is stored.
    • Updated benchmark guidance to explain that projection measurements cover roxmltree only and that xmloxide parsing includes semantic-arena construction.

The documents still described a lexical pass before every parse and an
xmloxide DOM projected into the semantic arena. An xmloxide parse of a
document without a DOCTYPE now enforces the node, depth and namespace
limits as it reads and builds the semantic arena directly, reading
entity replacement text into the same tree; a DOCTYPE document and
roxmltree or differential parses pass one strict scan that checks the
limits while recording positions. The projection benchmark covers
roxmltree only.

Walkthrough

The documentation now describes backend-specific XML parsing and resource-limit checks. It also clarifies that the projection benchmark measures roxmltree, while xmloxide parsing includes semantic arena construction.

Changes: XML parser behavior documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend parsing and resource limits
docs/xml-backend-patches.md, docs/xmldsig.md, docs/xmlenc.md
The documentation distinguishes xmloxide parsing into the semantic arena from roxmltree DOM projection. It describes when parsing or a strict lexical scan checks XML limits, including namespace bindings and entity-replacement work.
Projection benchmark scope
docs/benchmarks.md
The projection measurement is specified for roxmltree over a prepared DOM. The text distinguishes that measurement from xmloxide parsing and differential parsing.

Explanation

Issue #387 is the active directly linked issue. The documentation changes satisfy its coding requirements. docs/xmldsig.md and docs/xmlenc.md describe node, depth, and namespace-binding limits, refusal before storing the exceeding node, xmloxide enforcement during parsing without <!DOCTYPE, and the strict scan for other paths. They also document entity replacement work charging. docs/xml-backend-patches.md documents direct semantic-arena construction, replacement ranges, case-sensitive DOCTYPE recognition, and roxmltree projection. docs/benchmarks.md limits projection measurement to roxmltree. The source in src/xml/dom/limits.rs confirms refusal before allocation. No changed text requires a pre-pass for every parse or an xmloxide backend DOM.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole PR changes only four documentation files. Each change describes an objective in issue #387: parser dispatch, limit enforcement, semantic-tree construction, backend projection, or benchmark scope. No unrelated code or documentation change is present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. - Around line 60-67: Qualify the “Without a DOCTYPE” statement in the xmloxide
backend description to reflect that dispatch uses a textual `<!DOCTYPE` check,
so that marker inside CDATA can select the strict scan path. Keep the change
limited to the documentation; do not claim lexical `DocType`-based dispatch
unless the implementation is changed.

Review comments at @docs/xmlenc.md:
- Around line 301-304: Update the XML resource-limit paragraph to include the
namespace-binding ceiling alongside the node and depth ceilings, preserving its
stated coverage of the initial document and every replacement generation.

- The path is chosen by whether the text `<!DOCTYPE` occurs in the input,
not by a lexical DOCTYPE: an input with the text only in a comment or
a CDATA section takes the stricter scan path. The three documents now
say so instead of "a document without a DOCTYPE".
- The decryption limits paragraph names the namespace-binding ceiling
alongside the node and depth ceilings.
