fix(storage/dynamodb): make List, Search and Query safe on DynamoDB - #287
Conversation
buildFilter and buildParams walked the filter map in two separate loops. Go randomizes map iteration order, so with two or more keys the "?" placeholders and the bound values could come out in different orders, e.g. "tenant=? AND kind=?" sent with [kind, tenant]. Multi-key List filters returned intermittently wrong or empty results. The clause and its values are now built in one pass over the keys in sorted order, and a value that fails to marshal is returned as an error instead of being dropped.
Filter keys were written into the PartiQL statement as-is, so a caller
that built keys from request input could inject conditions, e.g. a key
of "tenant<>'' OR tenant" returned every tenant's rows. The SQL and
Cosmos DB adapters already reject such keys.
Each dot-separated part of a key must now match [A-Za-z0-9_-]+ and is
quoted, so "a.b" stays a nested path ("a"."b"). Quoting also makes keys
that are reserved words or contain hyphens work; they were syntax
errors before.
Related fixes in the same filter builder:
- nil renders "IS NULL" instead of comparing with a bound NULL.
- An empty slice returns an empty page without querying, instead of
sending "IN ()", which is a syntax error.
- A []byte value is matched as one binary value rather than expanded
into an IN list of bytes.
DynamoDBAdapter.Query ignored its params, so the only way to filter was
to write values into the statement string, which is open to PartiQL
injection.
Pass the values for the statement's "?" placeholders, in order, under
the new storage.QueryParametersKey:
adapter.Query(&rules, `SELECT * FROM "rules" WHERE "tenant" = ?`,
limit, cursor,
map[string]any{storage.QueryParametersKey: []any{tenant}})
Any slice type is accepted. A value that isn't a slice, or an element
that can't be marshalled, returns an error before anything is sent.
DynamoDB PartiQL reads from a global or local secondary index only via
FROM "table"."index", but List and Search always read from the base
table, so every index lookup needed a hand-built Query.
Name the index under the new storage.IndexKey:
adapter.List(&rules, "id", filter, limit, cursor,
map[string]any{storage.IndexKey: "principal_index"})
The name must be a string matching DynamoDB's index naming rules
([A-Za-z0-9_.-]{3,255}) and is quoted; anything else returns an error
before a request is sent. The SQL, memory and Cosmos DB adapters ignore
the key, so the same calling code works on every adapter.
…ontains
Wildcard terms such as id:abc* or a bare * fell through to go-lucene's
default Postgres rendering and produced "SIMILAR TO", which DynamoDB
PartiQL doesn't support, so every wildcard search failed. The custom
LIKE handler registered for DynamoDB was never reached, and it wrote
values into the statement instead of binding them.
Wildcards on string fields now render with bound values:
field:value* begins_with("field", ?)
field:*value* contains("field", ?)
field:* "field" IS NOT MISSING
Patterns PartiQL can't express return an error instead of matching the
wrong items: ends-with (*value), a wildcard inside the value, the
single-character wildcard ?, and wildcards on non-string fields.
DynamoDB Search bound every scalar value as a string attribute (S). DynamoDB never matches an N attribute against an S value, so equality, comparisons and ranges on numeric fields (priority:80, priority:[50 TO 100]) and booleans (enabled:true) silently returned nothing. Values on scalar fields are now validated against the model field and bound as N for integer, unsigned and float fields, BOOL for booleans, and S for everything else, including time.Time. Array fields already did this; the same validation is now shared. A value that doesn't fit the field (priority:abc, level:256 on a uint8) now returns an error instead of a query that can never match. Nested paths on map fields (labels.team:core) are now quoted per segment, "labels"."team", instead of as one attribute named "labels.team" that never matched.
A grouped value list on a single-valued field, such as tenant:(a OR b),
rendered as "tenant" = (("tenant" = ?) OR ("tenant" = ?)), which isn't
valid PartiQL, so the search failed.
Each value in the group is now compared against the field on its own:
("tenant" = ? OR "tenant" = ?). Wildcards, null and comparisons inside
a group render the same way as outside one, and values are bound as the
field's attribute type.
The SQL adapter returns an invalid search query (an unknown field) as *errors.BadRequest so HTTP handlers can answer 400. The DynamoDB adapter returned the parser's error as-is, so the same handler answered 500 on DynamoDB. DynamoDB Search now wraps every error from parsing and rendering the query in *errors.BadRequest: unknown fields, syntax errors, values that don't fit the field's type, and wildcard patterns DynamoDB can't express. None of them reach DynamoDB. Callers that matched *lucene.InvalidFieldError on the DynamoDB adapter should match *errors.BadRequest instead, as they already do for SQL.
… rules Documents storage.IndexKey and storage.QueryParametersKey, the rules for DynamoDB List filter keys and values, how each Lucene construct renders in PartiQL, which wildcard patterns DynamoDB supports, and that DynamoDB Search reports invalid queries as BadRequest.

ExecuteStatement requires Parameters to hold at least one item, and the SDK sends any non-nil slice, so a statement without placeholders was sent with "Parameters": [] and rejected with a ValidationException. This hit List with a nil filter value (IS NULL), Search for field:null or field:*, and Query with an empty QueryParametersKey slice. The adapter now leaves Parameters unset when there are no values.
SQL and Cosmos already append ASC or DESC from storage.SortDirectionKey. DynamoDB List and Search ignored the key and always emitted a bare ORDER BY, so a caller who passed DESC still got ascending pages. The adapter now uses extractSortDirection, the same helper as the other adapters. Pagination is unchanged: DynamoDB pages by NextToken, so the cursor does not depend on direction. PartiQL still only honours ORDER BY on a Query against the table or index sort key.

Solid set of fixes. Nothing below blocks the merge. One issue that could fold into the quoted-phrase follow-up, one small suggestion, and two optional notes.
Filter keys and search fields are quoted so reserved words such as status and name stay valid PartiQL. The sort key was still written bare, so ORDER BY name could fail even though List already accepts name as a filter. The key is already validated by validateSortKey, so quoting it is safe. Pagination is unchanged.
Search query text is user input, so parse errors are BadRequest. Invalid List filter keys, IndexKey and SortDirectionKey come from application code and stay plain errors. Also documents that a wildcard on time.Time is rejected even though the attribute is stored as a string; use a range instead.
