Rundown Editor (RE) needs to show which parts Sofie treats as AUTO. This adds a device-scoped, read-only peripheral method that returns the autoNext, autoNextOverlap and expectedDuration already stored on Part documents. It follows the same pattern as getRundownPlayoutState and getContentStatusForRundown.

  • API

    • getRundownPartAutoNext(deviceId, token, rundownExternalId) is registered as peripheralDevice.ingest.getRundownPartAutoNext.
    • Response type is in shared-lib/.../rundownPartAutoNext.ts.
    {
      rundownExternalId: string
      parts: Record<string /* Part.externalId */, {
        autoNext: boolean
        autoNextOverlap?: number
        expectedDuration?: number
      }>
    }
    • Optional fields are omitted when they are not numbers, to keep the payload minimal.
  • Authorization / scoping

    • Access goes through checkAccessAndGetPeripheralDevice, and the rundown lookup is filtered by the device's studioId.
    • Unknown rundowns and rundowns in another studio both return { rundownExternalId, parts: {} }, so a device cannot probe other studios.
    • A device with no studio throws 400.
  • Why read Part.autoNext instead of re-deriving it in RE

    • Blueprints set autoNext and autoNextOverlap at ingest, and playout reads those same fields when it decides to AUTO-take.
    • Reporting the stored values means RE shows what Core will act on. A copy of the rule in RE could drift from what the blueprints did.
    • This method does no blueprint recomputation.
  • Relation to getRundownPartSettings

    • The existing method returns an array, throws 404 for an unknown rundown, and has no autoNextOverlap.
    • This one is keyed by externalId, returns empty results for unknown rundowns, and includes autoNextOverlap, as the task specified.
  • Tests (peripheralDevice.test.ts)

    • Part with autoNext and part without.
    • Unknown rundown.
    • Device in another studio.
    • Invalid token.
    • I could not run these locally because dependencies are not installed, so they are unverified.

Out of scope: the AUTO-take wipe/timing investigation. It is gated on Blueprints evidence, and no Core timing behavior is changed here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Peripheral devices can retrieve each rundown part’s auto-next setting, with overlap and expected-duration values included when available.
    • Rundowns are looked up within the device’s assigned studio; requests for an unknown rundown return an empty parts map.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Requests with invalid device credentials are rejected, and devices without an assigned studio cannot retrieve rundown settings.
    • Access to rundowns outside the device’s assigned studio is restricted.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a peripheral-device API method that returns stored auto-next values for rundown parts. The method checks device access and studio assignment. It searches for the rundown in the device’s studio and returns an empty parts map if it finds no match.

Changes: Rundown part auto-next retrieval

Layer / File(s) Summary
Response contract and API registration
packages/shared-lib/src/peripheralDevice/rundownPartAutoNext.ts, packages/shared-lib/src/peripheralDevice/methodsAPI.ts
Adds response types for per-part autoNext, optional overlap and expected duration. Registers the read-only API method.
Authenticated rundown retrieval
meteor/server/api/integration/rundownPartAutoNext.ts, meteor/server/api/peripheralDevice.ts, meteor/server/api/__tests__/peripheralDevice.test.ts
Adds the server API forwarding method and integration method. The integration checks device access and studio assignment, looks up the rundown within that studio, and returns stored part values. Tests cover returned values, missing and out-of-studio rundowns, invalid tokens, and error matching for rundown settings.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6dbf9

A part with the external ID __proto__ can be missing from the returned AUTO settings. This affects a narrow input case and merits a bounded follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6dbf9

The new method preserves device-token authentication and studio-scoped reads. Its keyed response has a bounded integrity hazard for a reserved part identifier. No cross-studio access or shared prototype mutation was established, but production authorization settings and downstream handling remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new Record contract does not faithfully represent a stored Part.externalId of 'proto'. Assignment into the ordinary response object changes that object's prototype instead of creating an own part entry. Upstream string validation and blueprint mapping permit the value in inspected code, creating a bounded input-driven response-integrity hazard. Complete persistence validation and client-visible serialization effects remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Each successful call can read the projected part metadata for a matching rundown in the selected device's studio; the query does not require that device to have originally ingested the rundown. A parent token can inherit this scope for children accepted by the checker. Actual parent-child associations and production exposure were not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an actor can cause 'proto' to be persisted as a part identifier, an authorized read assigns that part's item as the response dictionary's prototype rather than an own entry. Ordinary own-property serialization would omit the entry. The demonstrated language-level effect is confined to the fresh response object: it does not mutate Object.prototype, alter stored Parts, bypass device authentication, or cross studio boundaries. Write authority, complete persistence validation, exact wire behavior, and downstream impact remain unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Authorization uses request-supplied device identity and token with a fresh database lookup, not a cached authenticated device identity. A connection is required. Gateway permission is enforced when header authentication is enabled; target-device or direct-parent token matching remains required regardless of that setting. Only after authentication does the method query a studio-scoped rundown.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The response dictionary is allocated per request, and the integration has no persistent write or multi-step mutation to recover. This contains the reserved-key integrity effect to returned data rather than shared server state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Construct the response dictionary with null-prototype or explicit own-data-property semantics so every permitted external identifier remains data rather than object metadata. Specify own-key lookup semantics for consumers of the shared contract.

@copilot The blueprint output is identical for autoNext true and false. Please compare the PartInstance/pieceInstances for the same part with AUTO on vs off, and tell us whether Core drops the wipe piece or its objects on an AUTO take."

@copilot The blueprint output is identical for autoNext true and false. Please compare the PartInstance/pieceInstances for the same part with AUTO on vs off, and tell us whether Core drops the wipe pi...

I can't give you a live AUTO-on vs AUTO-off PartInstance diff from here, and no code was changed. This sandbox has no running studio or database. Static read of the job-worker/corelib code:

  • PartInstance/PieceInstance creation doesn't branch on autoNext. Instances are generated on Take/setNext from the stored Part and Pieces. autoNext and autoNextOverlap are only read by calculatePartTimings (corelib timings.ts), the part-group end in timeline/rundown.ts, and lookahead's onTimeline. Nothing in these paths removes a wipe piece or its objects.
  • autoNext can change a piece's timing in three ways:
    1. If the previous part has autoNextOverlap, inTransition is replaced by the overlap and inTransitionStart becomes null. You said the blueprints never set it.
    2. An infinite piece in an autoNext part that is not continued into the next part gets end = #currentPartGroup.end + endOffset.
    3. The next part's objects are placed on the real timeline from the AUTO-take moment, and the part group gets duration = expectedDuration + toPartDelay + toPartPostroll.
  • This points at the wipe object being preloaded as lookahead on the same layer. Please check that the previous part had autoNext and an expectedDuration, and see whether the wipe object also appears as a lookahead_* object. The casparcg-state LOADBG→PLAY behaviour is still unchecked.

For a real diff, dump PartInstances, PieceInstances and the studio timeline for the same part pair, manual and AUTO, just after each take. I'll compare them if you attach them.
