Improve firmware page OTA vs USB flash UX and onboarding flow. - #977
Unify OTA controls on the firmware page with clear paths, prioritize OTA for connected devices, and redirect new flash-capable devices to firmware setup after create. fixes#974
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Firmware setup now presents OTA updates and USB flashing as distinct paths, with the recommended option shown first when applicable.
OTA updates include firmware version selection, release notes, and custom firmware uploads.
USB flashing offers firmware configuration options, web-flasher instructions, and troubleshooting guidance.
Newly created devices with firmware update support open their firmware page automatically.
Device maintenance now includes OTA update controls for supported devices.
Unify OTA controls on the firmware page with clear paths, prioritize OTA for connected devices, and redirect new flash-capable devices to firmware setup after create.
Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
The firmware page now presents OTA and USB flashing paths based on device capability and reported device state. Device creation redirects firmware-capable devices to that page. OTA controls are shared with device maintenance, and the page includes firmware version selection, custom firmware upload, flashing instructions, and related presentation updates.
Adds a device preference check based on LastSeen or reported firmware version. Firmware-capable devices now redirect to the firmware page after creation. Server template data includes OTA control IDs and display flags.
The firmware page selects OTA and USB path order based on device capability and preference. New templates provide OTA controls and USB flashing options and instructions. Related styles, translations, and OTA version-selector handling are updated.
Device maintenance OTA integration internal/server/handlers_device.go, web/templates/manager/update.html
Device maintenance renders the shared OTA controls for OTA-capable devices. Existing firmware and HTTP-command controls remain conditional, and the separate custom-firmware upload form is removed.
On the maintenance page for OTA-capable devices, custom firmware upload would not reach the OTA endpoint. Saving device settings would also clear the device API key and notes. Fix the nested-form structure before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #974 requires the firmware page to support both flashing firmware and updating firmware. The updater was previously only on the Edit Device page. At the reviewed head, web/templates/manager/firmware.html renders the USB flash bundle (firmware_usb_flash_bundle) and, when .Device.OTACapable is true, the OTA controls (device_firmware_ota). The OTA controls appear first for OTA-capable devices that prefer the update UI, and inside a collapsible USB section otherwise. The handler handleFirmwareGenerateGet supplies the OTA template data (version select ID, custom file input ID, release-notes flag, full-section flag, recommended flag). The Edit Device page still renders OTA controls, which the issue does not require removing. The issue has no non-coding tasks. Automated tests cover the new behavior: TestDevicePreferFirmwareUpdateUI covers the prioritization helper, and TestHandleCreateDevicePost covers the new firmware redirect. The issue states no further acceptance criteria. Non-OTA-capable devices see only the USB path, which matches the device capability.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Changes map to the firmware-page objective of #974 or support it. internal/data/models.go adds PreferFirmwareUpdateUI(), which firmware.html uses to order OTA and USB paths, with a unit test. internal/server/firmware.go, helpers.go, and the partials device_firmware_ota.html and firmware_usb_flash_bundle.html supply and render the unified OTA and USB controls. update.html delegates its OTA controls to the shared partial. firmware-simple.css, en.json, de.json, and manager.js provide styling, labels, and the OTA version-select fallback for the unified UI. The handleCreateDevicePost redirect to /devices/{id}/firmware is not named in #974. It is named in the current PR description as a deliberate onboarding change, and it sends users to the same firmware page. The test TestHandleCreateDevicePost is updated to match. No change is shown to be unrelated to the firmware page UX.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 7 files. (7 skipped: 7 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

web/templates/manager/update.html renders device_firmware_ota inside device-form. The partial opens another <form> and closes it. The browser ignores the nested form start tag, then closes device-form at the partial’s closing tag.
The file input remains associated with device-form, so this.form.submit() posts to the update endpoint instead of /devices/{{ .Device.ID }}/ota. Custom firmware upload from the maintenance page fails.
Controls after the partial are also outside device-form. The api_key and notes inputs are omitted from the update submission, and handleUpdateDevicePost assigns empty values to both fields.
Keep the file input in the partial and associate it with a sibling form rendered outside device-form:
