Hi,
With the release of Matter 1.4.2 (August 2025), the protocol now officially supports Wi-Fi-only commissioning — no Bluetooth required for onboarding.
This means that ESP32-based WLED controllers could now be commissioned directly into a Matter network over Wi-Fi, without the need for an external bridge or BLE hardware.
Why this matters:
- Lower hardware requirements (no BLE chip/module needed)
- Simpler user experience (direct Wi-Fi onboarding into Matter)
- Potential for native Matter support in WLED without relying on external Matter bridges
Possible approach:
- Integrate Espressif's Matter SDK with Wi-Fi-only onboarding mode
- Use ESP32-S3/C3/C6 variants for better performance and RAM headroom
- Map WLED’s LED control and effects to Matter's "Lighting" device type
Question:
Would the WLED team be open to exploring native Matter-over-Wi-Fi support now that BLE is no longer mandatory in Matter 1.4.2?
