feat(server): review native model-free ticks for v0.1.2 - #2
Deterministic status checks should be able to finish without opening an idle model turn. This standalone command-job patch adds a host-configured command path to T3's existing scheduled-task service.
scheduled task -> configured command -> validated request list
[] -> recorded completion, no provider session
worker action -> existing T3 launch/send/interrupt services
The patch uses the existing v0.1.2 scheduler, project/thread services, receipts, contracts, process runner and Effect host runtime. It requires no messaging/factory patch, new dependency/lockfile or database migration. The brief has the complete direct-dependency table and public history. The useful monitor is local and synthetic, not a real external CI connector.
This is a review PR inside zainmitchell/t3code, based on the clean official v0.1.2 source (044f07257c9684ae4543bd1e1ebf9c394e9e3830). It is not an upstream submission or a merge/deployment request. The temporary fork is maintained until T3 provides the capability or a better replacement.
The receipt-read and task-project follow-up preserves intent when receipt state is unreadable, returns MCP operation errors, and stops the original pass when a task moves projects. Seven regressions passed after reproducing the defects. The changed-file gate passed all 151 tests in eight executed files plus scoped static checks; the server build and docs-only gate passed. Exact changes, evidence and limits. The original preview.1 download remains frozen and omits later fixes. CodeRabbit review of head b0676eb39911c79ca6da713d0c6b062972430818 is pending.
Evidence
Before, from the base dispatch source: scheduled tasks launch/message an agent; the command-job dispatch path is absent. After, recorded package checks: 46 focused tests across four files passed, along with server typecheck/static checks and bundling. A later selected run passed 178 tests; counts overlap. Final lint/format and exact-example direct replay passed after example import cleanup.
A disposable exercise applied the standalone archive to the official base, installed pinned dependencies, built the server, and verified idle success, missing-job failure without model fallback and disablement using application RPC and scheduler subscriptions. Providers stayed disabled; thread/session projections stayed empty.
Three actual scheduler passes through the local build monitor produced notification counts 0, 1, 1 for pending, passed and repeated passed input; every output requested no worker action.
Review should especially check host-configured authority, validation/no-fallback behavior, receipt recovery, task lifecycle/stop ownership, process cleanup and handling of missing/stale output.
Merge Danger
Door: Code changes are reversible; host command side effects and receipt state require separate handling. No deployment or merge is requested here.
Blast Radius: Scheduler.
The executable is trusted host code, not sandboxed by T3 action limits. On POSIX a job can survive a hard server crash; reconciliation is not implemented. Normal stop/timeout evidence does not prove arbitrary descendant termination or exactly-once external side effects.
Implementation/integration: Claude Opus 5.5 through T3 Code. Source extraction, limited cleanup, source/evidence/documentation review, verification, examples and publication: GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code. Inherited T3 authorship and historical model credits remain in the linked PR map. CodeRabbit reviewed the previous head and returned findings. Fixes are pushed; review of the new head is pending.
Publish a source integration and verified build guide on the exact official v0.1.2 base. Retain MIT notices, upstream attribution, checksums, and the demonstrated limits.
Opus contributed additions. GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex prepared extraction, cleanup, verification, examples, and documentation.
Make model and harness names explicit and direct patch bug reports to the fork. For messaging, preserve the closed PR route and distinguish current CI execution from revision-specific local evidence.
Documentation: GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code.
Bring the why, when and how into the feature brief, distinguish bundled dependencies from later upstream layers, and tie history/evidence to exact revisions.
Documentation: GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code.
Please review this fork-local PR against its clean official v0.1.2 base, including the code and documented evidence limits. Current head: fa7cba753174a51604ff9453de581913e0341ff4. This is a review request inside zainmitchell/t3code; no upstream PR, merge or deployment is requested.

Retrying runTask five times can start an unwanted second pass after a coalesced trigger.
requestPass returns false when no pass is running. runTask(task, "manual") then fails with "Schedule task is already running." only while activeRuns still holds the task. On that failure, the retry waits one second and runs runTask again. The retry does not call requestPass again. Suppose a new pass for the same job starts in that second, from another bound task or a scheduled tick. The retried runTask then calls CommandJobs.run. run coalesces silently and records a "succeeded" run for a pass that did not start yet. This differs from the requestPass path, which records no run. The effect is limited to the recorded run history. Call requestPass again inside the retried effect so each attempt coalesces first.

Update triggerCommandJob so each retry attempt calls
commandJobs.value.requestPass before runTask, returning without running when the
pass is coalesced; preserve the existing retry policy and avoid performing a
separate initial requestPass that would duplicate the check.
Use structured attributes and cause in CommandJobError instead of free-form messages built from cause.message.
CommandJobError has only a message string. Many call sites build that message from cause.message: Lines 296, 324, 333, 339, 354, 386, 644, 743 and 799. The error also discards the underlying error. Line 976 copies an unknown failure with String(result.failure). Line 781 puts up to 500 characters of raw job stderr into the message. That message goes into lastRunError, which ScheduledTaskService persists and shows to clients.
Add a bounded operation/stage attribute, a job or path attribute, and a cause field. Build the message from those attributes. Keep the stderr tail only in last-run.log and status.json, or document that exception explicitly.
As per coding guidelines: "The message is fixed or built from those attributes, never from cause, cause.message, or a stringified defect", and "An error that wraps a failure keeps the immediate underlying error as cause". The guidelines also prohibit "command arguments or output" in attributes.

The three review-body findings were also checked and addressed: structured operation/job/path errors preserve immediate causes and keep raw stderr in status/log files; the reviewed I/O helpers have named spans; each busy-task retry rechecks requestPass before attempting another run. Regressions reproduced cause/message problems and the missing retry recheck before the fixes. The Windows fixture uses an OS exit wait rather than the suggested polling loop.

A project change on edit leaves the running pass unstoppable.
upsert stops the old command job only when the task is disabled or its prompt names a different job. A project change does neither.
Take a task bound to job tick that is edited into another project while a pass runs.
CommandJobs.stop matches a task against running.config.projectId, so stop ignores the edited row.
The old row no longer exists, so nothing can stop the pass.
A later pause or delete of the edited task also does nothing, because stopCommandJob uses the new project ID.
The pass keeps running until it finishes, up to 3 passes of timeoutMs. It can keep launching workers under the old project's ceiling.
The comment on Line 1253 says the running pass must not be left "with no row that can stop it". A project change breaks that rule. Add the project check to the stop condition.

The change adds model-free command jobs to scheduled tasks, including executable configuration, validated worker requests, receipt-based recovery, pass coordination, and task lifecycle handling. It also updates receipt lookup error handling, adds examples and verification records for the native-tick preview, and changes CodeRabbit review settings.
Receipt lookup failures now propagate from ThreadManagementService. MCP retry paths map those failures to orchestration errors. Tests cover both behaviors.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 79be1
Command jobs now run as host-configured, validated processes, with lifecycle stops and receipt recovery covered by tests. Per-pass cost grows with the number of retained workers, which should be bounded in a follow-up. The preview README should also distinguish the frozen patch from the current branch. Neither blocks merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 79be1
Scheduled checks can now run trusted programs with the server's access. Task and project bindings restrict invocation, and worker actions have additional checks. Remaining concerns are commands surviving hard crashes and active workers losing their automatic management records after history pruning.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new host-command path lacks containment across POSIX hard crashes: a command can survive the server while restart recovery marks its scheduled run failed and permits later scheduling. It can consequently overlap a later pass or continue host-level side effects outside the restarted server's stop and timeout state. Unique output files and launch-command receipts limit stale-response consumption and duplicate worker launches, but do not reconcile arbitrary command side effects. This limitation is explicitly documented; effective containment depends on deployment supervision that was not supplied.
Medium · reliability · inferred: Receipt retention doubles as worker-ownership storage. Above 1,000 entries, older receipts with non-null thread IDs can be discarded without checking whether their workers are terminal. Subsequent passes omit those workers and reject job-directed sends or interrupts because the ownership receipt is missing; after restart, their automatic wakeup index is also absent. This can strand active workers outside the job's management loop. Durable orchestration receipts prevent a fresh launch of the same work ID, so the checked behavior fails closed against duplication rather than creating an authority bypass; independent thread management remains available.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The maximum direct-command exposure is the filesystem, network, and credentials available to the server's operating-system identity, not merely the configured project. The worker-action API separately restricts project, models, runtime mode, branch prefix, and per-pass launches. Actual host permissions and credential contents were not supplied, so tenant, environment, and data-store exposure cannot be quantified.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The checked prompt-to-executable path does not accept executable paths or arguments from the scheduled-task prompt. A valid job name must resolve in host configuration, and both the task ID and project must match before execution. This counters a simple arbitrary-command attack through a job-name reference, but does not establish protection against modification of host configuration or trusted program files.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Command output crosses a validation boundary: the response has an 8 MiB size check and at most 100 requests, followed by per-request decoding. Launches enforce configured ceilings and resolved project base commits. Sends require a locally owned worker, current project/model checks, and a downstream dispatch-mode limit; interrupts use project-scoped thread management. These API controls are distinct from trusting the executable itself.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Recovery preserves uncertain launch intent when receipt reads fail, and an accepted launch lacking its local receipt is blocked instead of receiving new launch facts. This protects deduplication and ownership integrity under uncertainty, although it requires reconciliation rather than guaranteeing automatic progress.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep active-worker ownership separate from bounded historical receipts, retiring ownership only after a confirmed terminal or explicit reconciliation outcome. For POSIX operation, add process supervision or durable run reconciliation before permitting a replacement pass. Protect host configuration and executable/script paths from less-trusted worker writes, and consider an explicit environment allowlist to reduce inherited credential exposure.

Document why readReceipts uses Effect.fnUntraced.
readReceipts performs file I/O on every pass and during layer construction. It uses Effect.fnUntraced without a stated reason. The guideline allows untraced functions only with a rationale beside them. The guideline gives the default for service I/O as a named span. Use Effect.fn("CommandJobs.readReceipts"), or add a short comment that explains why the existing span already covers the read.
writeJson (Lines 344-351) is also a reusable I/O helper, written as an arrow without a span.

Bound snapshot work per pass.
runPass snapshots every receipt in memory, including terminal receipts, before invoking the command. Persisted receipts retain up to 1,000 launched receipts, but pruning is not terminal-aware. workerSnapshot reads the thread shell and, for readable in-project threads, the thread records without a terminal-worker guard or cache. Effect.forEach runs these effects sequentially when no concurrency option is provided.
This creates a bounded but linear per-pass cost. Idle passes can still perform hundreds of sequential projection reads and generate a large input.json. The missing worktree path also causes an additional getThreadShell call on later passes.
Use bounded concurrency and define a shorter terminal-receipt retention policy if the input contract permits it.

| Host job configuration and executable | Supply `command-jobs.json`, a permitted task/project, executable, arguments, working directory and timeout. | Supplied by the host owner; see [INSTALL.md](INSTALL.md). |
| Provider/model selection for requested agent work | Needed when the job requests worker actions. An idle pass opens no provider session. | Existing T3 provider configuration and configured model aliases. Real provider actions were not exercised here. |
The complete six-file delta is the command-job service, its two test files, scheduler integration, runtime wiring, and the crash fixture, as listed in [MANIFEST.json](MANIFEST.json). It uses existing Effect/platform/test dependencies. **No native messaging PR, #22445–#22448 stack, factory package, new npm dependency, lockfile change, or database migration is required.** That standalone property was exercised against the clean official base.

Distinguish the frozen patch from the current branch.
The six-file delta describes preview.1, not the current branch. UPSTREAM.md line 20 also lists the later ThreadManagementService and MCP changes. Calling it the complete delta can cause readers to omit those fixes when porting the branch. State that the manifest describes the frozen preview and link to the branch changes.

Update the README’s claim that the six-file delta is complete: clarify that
MANIFEST.json describes the frozen preview.1 patch, not the current branch, and
link to the branch changes documented in UPSTREAM.md, including the later

Summary
Deterministic status checks should be able to finish without opening an idle model turn. This standalone command-job patch adds a host-configured command path to T3's existing scheduled-task service.
This is a review PR inside zainmitchell/t3code, based on the clean official v0.1.2 source (
044f07257c9684ae4543bd1e1ebf9c394e9e3830). It is not an upstream submission or a merge/deployment request. The temporary fork is maintained until T3 provides the capability or a better replacement.Complete why/when/how brief · Dependencies and history · T3 Ideas discussion · Source preview/downloads.
Review follow-up
The receipt-read and task-project follow-up preserves intent when receipt state is unreadable, returns MCP operation errors, and stops the original pass when a task moves projects. Seven regressions passed after reproducing the defects. The changed-file gate passed all 151 tests in eight executed files plus scoped static checks; the server build and docs-only gate passed. Exact changes, evidence and limits. The original preview.1 download remains frozen and omits later fixes. CodeRabbit review of head

After, recorded package checks: 46 focused tests across four files passed, along with server typecheck/static checks and bundling. A later selected run passed 178 tests; counts overlap. Final lint/format and exact-example direct replay passed after example import cleanup.
