Dr. Jerome Graves

R&D Engineer · Ultrasonics, Instrumentation & Robotics · PhD, Electronic Engineering

I design and build instruments that unite physics, sensing, control and software: ultrasonic imaging systems, machine vision instruments, robots and industrial machines. My work runs end to end, from wave physics and inversion algorithms through C/C++ firmware, FPGA design and custom PCBs, to validated, deployed hardware.

PhD in Electronic Engineering (2026, SPE3D Ultrasonic Lab, London South Bank University) on 3D ultrasound imaging of the crystal structure of ice cores. Creator of the Yertle quadruped robot and a suite of open-source ultrasonic instruments.

Founder of BugBotLab: a tiny robot and 400 free lessons that teach GCSE and A level computer science, robotics and university-level control, estimation and planning, all in Python on a simulated robot.

What I build

Ultrasonic imaging and inversion · Machine vision instruments · Robotics and motion control · Embedded firmware (C, C++, FreeRTOS) · FPGA / RTL design and verification

Ultrasonic instruments

Project What it is Language Stars
Pulse-Echo Azimuthal Scanner Ultrasonic instrument measuring the crystal orientation fabric of ice cores. Custom RP2040 controller board, sensorless homing and force-controlled docking, Streamlit control app, and a full machine manual. Python ★ 1
Pulse-Echo Azimuthal Simulation The scanner's digital twin. Anisotropic GPU FDTD validated against an independent finite-element solver, an acquisition error model, and fabric inversion. Python ★ 1
OpenUSCT Open-source ultrasound computed tomography. Full-waveform inversion in Python, C++ and GPU, FPGA acquisition in SystemVerilog, and a browser studio. Try it here. Python ★ 8
Ice CNC Ultrasound Five-axis pitch-catch ultrasonic core scanner. Marlin-based motion, load-cell coupling interlock, Python acquisition stack. Built for the PhD. Python ★ 1
Fabric Analyser Machine-vision instrument for crystal-orientation measurement in ice-core thin sections. RP2350 firmware, Python and OpenCV, KiCad hardware. Python ★ 1

Robotics and embedded

Project What it is Language Stars
Yertle 3D-printed quadruped robot for locomotion research, on ROS. Python ★ 162
Meowtion Smart cat collar that spots illness early by watching habits. On-device AI over a confidence-gated cascade, nRF52840 collar on Zephyr, ESP32-S3 base station, cloud training and a live dashboard. Try it here. C ★ 17
BugBot Small holonomic robot for teaching robotics and computer science, and the company I founded around it. ESP32-P4 vision, motor and odometry boards in KiCad, C firmware under a Python API shared with the simulator, and 400 free lessons from GCSE to university. Try the lessons. Python ★ 0

Tools and writing

Project What it is Language Stars
R&D Prep Interactive refresher for R&D and embedded interviews. Lessons, a question bank and code drills that are compiled and run for real by GCC. One static page, no framework and no build step. Try it here. JavaScript ★ 1
The Coding Industry White paper on product coding and marking in manufacturing, arguing that laser displaces ink on cost structure rather than on print quality. XeLaTeX. TeX ★ 1
