The git hooks of this repository start Julia once per hook, where they started it three or four times.

.githooks/pre-commit and .githooks/pre-push become short launchers. pre-commit.jl runs the test-layout check, the format check, fatou lint and the NFC check in one Julia process, and the load test in a child process with --project=., so the load test still sees the package's own environment, as using Pkg does in CI. pre-push.jl does the same for the push checks.

Without julia on the PATH, a commit with no staged .jl file and no change below test/ passes, and so does a push that updates no main or master, as with the old hooks; any other commit or push is refused. A renamed .jl file, a .jl file that becomes a symlink, a path with non-ASCII characters and a file that does not parse are checked too. The formatting stage needs JuliaFormatter 2.14 or later, which supports Julia 1.10 and later, and refuses an older release with one line that names its version. A fatou that cannot start skips the advisory lint stage, as a missing fatou does.

The files are byte-identical to githooks/ (and scripts/test-layout.jl) of the ResearchHarness at commit bcda496, as harness githooks --apply installs them. Only pre-commit and pre-push are executable.

Nothing else changes. After the merge, harness githooks reports nothing to do for this repository.

Review comments at @.githooks/pre-push.jl:
- Line 65: **Stop the detached suite on Windows interrupts.**

On Windows, the interrupt handler cannot stop the suite. `ccall(:kill, ...)`
calls the POSIX `kill` with a negative process ID to signal a process group.
Windows has no equivalent group signal, so the suite can keep running after the
hook stops. Depending on how the failed call behaves, the hook can also exit
before it waits for the suite.

Add a Windows branch that ends the suite's process tree, for example `taskkill
/PID <pid> /T /F`. Keep the POSIX group signal on other systems.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automated checks before commits, including formatting, Unicode consistency, test layout, and package loading. Some checks are advisory and won’t block a commit.
    • Added automatic test-suite runs before pushes to the main and master branches; pushes to other branches skip the suite.
    • If Julia is unavailable, commits with eligible Julia or test files are blocked, and pushes to main or master are blocked.

The pre-commit and pre-push hooks now delegate Julia checks to adjacent scripts. The scripts discover staged files or pushed refs, run applicable validation or tests, and return status codes. The shell hooks define fallback behavior when Julia is unavailable.

Changes: Pre-commit validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Staged-file checks
.githooks/pre-commit.jl
The Julia script discovers staged paths and adds test-layout, formatting, advisory Fatou lint, Unicode NFC, and package-load checks.
Pre-commit orchestration
.githooks/pre-commit, .githooks/pre-commit.jl
The script runs applicable checks and blocks on failures. The shell hook launches it when Julia is available; otherwise, it blocks when staged Julia or test paths exist, and allows commits when neither exists.

Pre-push test execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ref gate and test command
.githooks/pre-push.jl
The script selects pushes targeting main or master and builds a test command using Pkg.test or test/runtests.jl when available.
Suite execution and hook dispatch
.githooks/pre-push, .githooks/pre-push.jl
The script runs the selected suite and handles test results and interruption. The shell hook launches it when Julia is available; otherwise, it blocks pushes targeting main or master.

On Windows, interrupting a pre-push test run may leave the tests running or leave the hook waiting for them. This is a bounded issue that can be addressed before merge or accepted for follow-up.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the git hooks now run one Julia process per hook. It matches the summary, which shows the pre-commit and pre-push hooks becoming launchers that delegate to Julia scripts. The title is specific and descriptive, so it passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the purpose of the change: each hook now starts Julia once instead of three or four times. It explains the launcher design, the behavior without Julia on PATH, the JuliaFormatter version requirement, and that the files match the ResearchHarness source. These points match the raw summary of the changed hook files, so the description is related to the changeset and passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Stop the detached suite on Windows interrupts.

On Windows, the interrupt handler cannot stop the suite. ccall(:kill, ...) calls the POSIX kill with a negative process ID to signal a process group. Windows has no equivalent group signal, so the suite can keep running after the hook stops. Depending on how the failed call behaves, the hook can also exit before it waits for the suite.

Add a Windows branch that ends the suite's process tree, for example taskkill /PID <pid> /T /F. Keep the POSIX group signal on other systems.
