[None][fix] Explain K/V pool coalescing failures; test Qwen3.8-Flash-Next QSA layouts and FP8/NVFP4 KV - #20904
Problem. Qwen3.8-Flash-Next has 2 KV heads, head_dim 256 and a 128-dim bf16 QSA index K. With an FP8 KV cache at TP ≥ 2 (one KV head per rank), the FP8 K/V page is the same size as the index-K page. KVCacheManagerV2 coalesces a lifecycle's buffers by page size, so index K landed in the K/V pool. Each QSA layer then put three pages into the K/V slot, and _kv_pool_mapping_offset failed its exact_div for odd layers. NVFP4 collides the same way at two heads per rank (TP1, attention DP). Per-token bytes, with 32 tokens per block:

The fix itself is already on main.#20276 packs the QSA side planes (every local layer's index K plus the position page) into one per-slot buffer whenever a side page could match any K/V or block-scale page size. The QSA cache manager is shared by the built-in (modeling_qwen4_exp.py) and modeling_v2 paths, so that change also fixes the built-in model. #20276 also enables FP8 context FMHA for an NVFP4 KV cache, and adds a separate draft page table for the QSA MTP draft loop.
Descriptive error in KVCacheManagerV2._kv_pool_mapping_offset. It used a bare exact_div assertion, which names nothing and is stripped under python -O; the offset would then be silently wrong. It now raises a RuntimeError naming the cause (another buffer of the same page size coalesced into the K/V pool) and the override point.
Layout tests on the layouts that actually collide.test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py built every manager at TP1 except in the disaggregation test. So the FP8 one-KV-head layout from the report was never checked against the attention op's addressing. The address and packing tests now run on rank 0 of TP1, TP2, TEP4, ADP2 and ADP4. The aliasing test also covers fp32, fp16 and bf16 SSM state. The disaggregation test spans all five layouts.
Negative test in test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py: a K/V-sized INDEX_KEY on every layer, without an offset override, must fail with the new error.
Two QA accuracy cases in TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next (added to qa/llm_function_core.txt only), using a new kv_cache_dtype argument. Each covers one collision layout on the NVFP4 checkpoint:
test_nvfp4_tep4_fp8kv_trtllm_ple_offload: TEP4 with FP8 KV, the reported case.
test_nvfp4_adp4_nvfp4kv_trtllm_ple_offload: ADP4 with NVFP4 KV.
Their GSM8K/MMLU references are new references/*.yaml entries.
Known limitation (unchanged). The packed side-plane size depends on the number of local QSA layers. Disaggregated peers with different PP splits therefore register different side-plane sizes, as with the existing position role.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py (GPU; already in l0_b300.yml through unittest/_torch/attention)
Results (GB300, 4 GPUs per node, measured with this change on top of 0f3e1d0)
Since then the branch has been rebased over #18843. That PR moved the QSA cache manager into Qwen4ExpHybridCacheManager (tensorrt_llm/_torch/modules/qwen4_exp/cache_manager.py) without changing the side-plane logic. The results below were not re-measured after the rebase.
Reproduction. I built the 48-layer rank-0 trunk manager (12 QSA layers, 32 tokens per block) twice: once with the QSA cache manager from before #20276 (3fa0c60), and once with the one on main.
Construction fails for fp8 TEP4, fp8 TP2, nvfp4 TP1 and nvfp4 ADP4. The new error reads: Layer 7's K page starts 24576 B into its pool slot, which is not a multiple of one layer's K/V pages (16384 B) ....
bf16 builds.
On main: all five build, with qsa_side_planes_size = 98688 (12 × 8192 + 384) for fp8/nvfp4, K/V page-index scale 24, and layer offsets 0–11.
End to end (built-in modeling_qwen4_exp.py, LLM API)
retrieves 9/9 passkeys at ~3k/7k/12k tokens and three depths. These lengths are above the 2048-token dense budget, so every rank logs QSA exact sparse attention is active; NVFP4 KV is the exception, using the regular backend as before.
The GSM8K numbers below are on a fixed 250-sample subset, using the same prompt protocol as TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next.

Dev Engineer Review
KVCacheManagerV2._kv_pool_mapping_offset now raises a descriptive RuntimeError when the K-buffer offset is not an exact multiple of the computed K/V page stride. The change replaces a bare exact_div failure and keeps returning the quotient for valid offsets.
The change also adds two Qwen3.8-Flash-Next accuracy cases: TEP4 with FP8 KV cache and ADP4 with NVFP4 KV cache. The stated layout and accuracy results were measured before rebase, so current pass status is unavailable. Compatibility across disaggregated peers with different PP splits remains unverified because side-plane size depends on local QSA layer count.
QA Engineer Review
Modified test code covers QSA cache layouts, SSM state aliasing, transfer views, and the invalid INDEX_KEY mapping-offset error path. The two new accuracy cases are listed in tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt. No matching CI test-db/ entries were identified. The layout tests use rank 0 with PP1, so they do not establish multi-rank behavior or compatibility across different PP splits. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Current test execution results are unavailable.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py — Verify that nonintegral K-buffer offsets raise the descriptive error and that valid offsets still return the correct quotient.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py — Adds a regression test for INDEX_KEY registration without the required offset override. It is a unit test and is not listed in the integration test lists.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py — Expands checks for rank-0 TP/TEP/ADP layouts, page shapes, addresses, aliasing, and transfer views. It is a unit test and is not listed in the integration test lists.
tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py — Adds TEP4/FP8-KV and ADP4/NVFP4-KV accuracy cases and allows the KV-cache dtype to be set. Verify both cases use the intended cache configuration and evaluation flow.
tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt — Adds both accuracy case IDs to the manual-QA list. No corresponding CI test-list entries were identified.
tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/gsm8k.yaml — Adds GSM8K references for the two Qwen3.8-Flash-Next KV-cache configurations. Verify the reference values match current measurements.
tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/mmlu.yaml — Adds MMLU references for FP8 and NVFP4 KV cache. Verify the reference values match current measurements.

[None][fix] Explain K/V pool coalescing failures; test Qwen3.8-Flash-Next QSA layouts and FP8/NVFP4 KV
Oct 23, 2026
The change validates KV pool mapping offsets, expands sparse cache layout tests across parallel configurations and SSM cache dtypes, and adds Qwen3.8-Flash-Next evaluations and accuracy references for FP8 and NVFP4 KV caches.

Summary
Validate KV pool mapping offsets tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py
The manager raises a descriptive RuntimeError when a layer’s K-buffer offset is not divisible by its computed K/V page stride. A regression test checks the error for an unsupported offset.
Layout tests now cover TP1, TP2, TEP4, ADP2, and ADP4. They use rank-local KV-head counts, vary SSM cache dtypes for aliasing checks, and compare transfer-view metadata across layouts.

Evaluation helpers accept a configurable KV-cache dtype. New TEP4/FP8 and ADP4/NVFP4 cases are added, with GSM8K and MMLU accuracy references and integration test-list entries.
NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM issue 6757 tracks Qwen3.8-Flash-Next support. This PR adds QA and accuracy cases for the model with FP8 and NVFP4 KV-cache configurations.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 64b11
The new cases improve coverage, but they can miss recurrent-state overlap or fail to prove that accuracy was measured with the requested KV-cache quantization. These bounded test gaps warrant follow-up before relying on the cases as regression protection.

ssm_dtype changes the trunk SSM allocation, but the current write/read loop never includes an SSM view. An SSM-to-side-plane overlap can therefore pass. Draft managers have no Mamba layers, so keep only one SSM dtype for draft cases.
Add cm.get_ssm_states(0) for trunk cases. Use a valid slot for each view because the manager sizes SSM and attention pools separately.

4 points — The production change is localized, but reviewing the expanded tests requires reasoning about per-rank KV geometry, quantized page/scale strides, side-buffer aliasing and transfer-layout invariance. No new model or attention algorithm is introduced.
Importance
Important — The explicit remainder check enforces a sensitive attention-addressing invariant in shared K/V pool mapping. Invalid layer offsets now trigger an unconditional RuntimeError.

Assert the effective KV-cache quantization before evaluation.
The current validator maps fp8 and nvfp4 to the requested quantization algorithms, so this is not a current initialization defect. However, _run_evals does not assert the effective KV-cache algorithm. If a future regression leaves it unset, GSM8K or MMLU can select the existing MIXED_PRECISION reference without a KV-cache selector and pass its normal accuracy assertion. Add the effective-algorithm assertion for these two cases.

…layouts on TP/TEP/ADP
KVCacheManagerV2 coalesces a lifecycle's buffers by page size, so an extra
buffer the size of a K/V page lands in the K/V pool and leaves no uniform
per-layer offset. _kv_pool_mapping_offset checked this with a bare
exact_div assertion, which names nothing and is stripped under python -O.
Raise a RuntimeError that names the cause and the override instead.
Build the Qwen3.8-Flash-Next QSA trunk and draft managers on rank 0 of TP1,

and cover the fp32/fp16/bf16 SSM state dtypes in the aliasing test. Add a
negative test for the new error, and let TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next choose the
KV cache dtype.

test_side_and_main_views_do_not_alias does not inspect get_conv_states(...). Convolution storage has its own role-specific buffer and slot capacity, so an SSM-state check can pass while a convolution view overlaps a QSA side plane.
For trunk cases, select a Mamba layer and derive a valid slot from its convolution view, such as conv_states.shape[0] - 1, instead of using the QSA page slot slots.pop() - 1. Add that view to the physical-range or write/read non-alias assertion. Keep draft cases separate because they have no Mamba layers.

Description
Problem. Qwen3.8-Flash-Next has 2 KV heads,
head_dim256 and a 128-dim bf16 QSA index K. With an FP8 KV cache at TP ≥ 2 (one KV head per rank), the FP8 K/V page is the same size as the index-K page.KVCacheManagerV2coalesces a lifecycle's buffers by page size, so index K landed in the K/V pool. Each QSA layer then put three pages into the K/V slot, and_kv_pool_mapping_offsetfailed itsexact_divfor odd layers. NVFP4 collides the same way at two heads per rank (TP1, attention DP). Per-token bytes, with 32 tokens per block:The fix itself is already on main. #20276 packs the QSA side planes (every local layer's index K plus the position page) into one per-slot buffer whenever a side page could match any K/V or block-scale page size. The QSA cache manager is shared by the built-in (
modeling_qwen4_exp.py) and modeling_v2 paths, so that change also fixes the built-in model. #20276 also enables FP8 context FMHA for an NVFP4 KV cache, and adds a separate draft page table for the QSA MTP draft loop. This PR adds what #20276 left out:

The packed side-plane size depends on the number of local QSA layers. Disaggregated peers with different PP splits therefore register different side-plane sizes, as with the existing position role.

Layer 7's K page starts 24576 B into its pool slot, which is not a multiple of one layer's K/V pages (16384 B) ....qsa_side_planes_size= 98688 (12 × 8192 + 384) for fp8/nvfp4, K/V page-index scale 24, and layer offsets 0–11.End to end (built-in
modeling_qwen4_exp.py, LLM API)max_num_tokens8192,max_seq_len16384, block reuse off, PLE host offload.QSA exact sparse attention is active; NVFP4 KV is the exception, using the regular backend as before.TestQwen3_8_Flash_Next.MTP3, FP8 checkpoint. TEP4 uses a separate draft KV manager; ADP4 folds the draft layer into the target manager. Each cell gives
avg_decoded_tokens_per_iteras short context / 8k context, then GSM8K:There is no long-context drop with the separate draft manager, and no illegal memory access.

Dev Engineer Review
KVCacheManagerV2._kv_pool_mapping_offsetnow raises a descriptiveRuntimeErrorwhen the K-buffer offset is not an exact multiple of the computed K/V page stride. The change replaces a bareexact_divfailure and keeps returning the quotient for valid offsets.
Modified test code covers QSA cache layouts, SSM state aliasing, transfer views, and the invalid
INDEX_KEYmapping-offset error path. The two new accuracy cases are listed intests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt. No matching CItest-db/entries were identified. The layout tests use rank 0 with PP1, so they do not establish multi-rank behavior or compatibility across different PP splits. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Current test execution results are unavailable.Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py— Verify that nonintegral K-buffer offsets raise the descriptive error and that valid offsets still return the correct quotient.tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_extra_buffers.py— Adds a regression test forINDEX_KEYregistration without the required offset override. It is a unit test and is not listed in the integration test lists.tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/qsa/test_qsa_cache_manager_layout.py— Expands checks for rank-0 TP/TEP/ADP layouts, page shapes, addresses, aliasing, and transfer views. It is a unit test and is not listed in the integration test lists.tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py— Adds TEP4/FP8-KV and ADP4/NVFP4-KV accuracy cases and allows the KV-cache dtype to be set. Verify both cases use the intended cache configuration and evaluation flow.tests/integration/test_lists/qa/llm_function_core.txt— Adds both accuracy case IDs to the manual-QA list. No corresponding CI test-list entries were identified.tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/gsm8k.yaml— Adds GSM8K references for the two Qwen3.8-Flash-Next KV-cache configurations. Verify the reference values match current measurements.tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/mmlu.yaml— Adds MMLU references for FP8 and NVFP4 KV cache.
