refactor(composer): share the composer keys between AI chat and Group Chat - #1891
New src/renderer/hooks/input/composerKeyDown.ts holds the keys both composers answer:
handleComposerFindKey(): Cmd+F.
handleComposerPickerKey(): the @ picker's Up / Down / Tab / Enter / Escape.
handleComposerSendKey(): Enter or Cmd+Enter to send, and Escape to leave the composer.
Each handles one branch and returns whether it consumed the key, so useInputKeyDown keeps its AI-only branches in its own order and the room never reaches them: the command ladder, slash commands, shell completion, category cycling, folder drill-in, steer and Forced Parallel Send. Values a surface owns (Enter-to-send, search key, picker state, send action) are passed in and read at call time. They are plain functions, not a hook, so nothing re-renders per keystroke.
There is one per-surface switch, isolateFromWindowKeys. The window keyboard handlers only recognise the AI composer, so the room sets it and every key handled here stops propagating there. AI chat leaves it off and behaves exactly as before: every existing useInputKeyDown test passes unchanged.
Group Chat behaviour changes
With Enter-to-send on, Cmd/Ctrl+Enter now sends, as in AI chat (it was swallowed). Opt+Cmd+Enter and Ctrl+Opt+Enter also send, since the room has no steer chord. Cmd+Shift+Enter is still swallowed. Cmd/Ctrl+Enter still never reaches the window handler.
With the @ picker open, Shift+Enter accepts the selected agent (it inserted a newline), and Cmd/Ctrl+Enter accepts it instead of sending the draft.
With the @ picker open, Cmd/Ctrl with Up, Down, Tab or Escape acts on the picker instead of falling through to the window.
Escape in the picker also returns the caret to the composer.
Kept on purpose, each with a test: picker keys and Cmd/Ctrl+Enter do not reach the window handlers; Cmd+F opens the room's Find bar, refocuses it when open, and leaves Cmd+Shift+F to the window; Escape with the picker closed is still handled by the window's handleEscapeInMain; Enter-to-send comes from the global setting only.
Plan rows
Completed: 2, 4, 17, and 15's keys. Row 3 (Escape) is covered and still goes through the window in a room, as #1877 set it up.
Found, not fixed here
AI chat: Escape in the @ picker closes it and then reaches handleEscapeInMain, which also blurs the composer. Fixing that means stopping propagation for the AI picker too, which is an AI behaviour change, so it is left for a separate PR.
Neither composer checks isComposing on the Enter path, so an Enter that confirms an IME candidate can send half-composed text. One guard in handleComposerSendKey plus a test per composer would fix both.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Keyboard Handling
Composer shortcuts now behave consistently across AI and group chat inputs, including Cmd/Ctrl+F, mention-picker navigation and selection, Enter-to-send, and Escape.
Shift+Enter inserts a newline when Enter-to-send is enabled. Picker navigation does not wrap, and Escape restores focus where applicable.
Keyboard actions defer to active IME composition, avoiding unintended sends or picker actions.
Documentation
Updated composer guidance to describe shared keyboard behavior and when shortcuts are kept from reaching window-level handlers.
… Chat
Step 3 of the Group Chat composer parity plan. New
src/renderer/hooks/input/composerKeyDown.ts holds the keys both composers
answer: handleComposerFindKey (Cmd+F), handleComposerPickerKey (the @ picker's
Up / Down / Tab / Enter / Escape) and handleComposerSendKey (Enter or Cmd+Enter
to send, Escape to leave the composer). Each handles one branch and returns
whether it consumed the key, so useInputKeyDown keeps its AI-only branches
(command ladder, slash commands, shell completion, category cycling, folder
drill-in, steer, Forced Parallel Send) in its own order and the room never
reaches them. Values a surface owns (Enter-to-send, search key, picker state,
send action) are passed in, read at call time.
One per-surface switch, isolateFromWindowKeys: the window keyboard handlers
only recognise the AI composer, so the room sets it and every key handled here
stops propagating there. AI chat leaves it off and behaves exactly as before;
every existing useInputKeyDown test passes unchanged.
Group Chat behaviour changes:
- Enter-to-send on: Cmd/Ctrl+Enter now sends, as in AI chat (it was swallowed).
Opt+Cmd+Enter and Ctrl+Opt+Enter also send now, since the room has no steer
chord. Cmd+Shift+Enter is still swallowed. Cmd/Ctrl+Enter still never
reaches the window handler.
- @ picker open: Shift+Enter accepts the selected agent (it inserted a
newline), and Cmd/Ctrl+Enter accepts it instead of sending the draft.
- @ picker open: Cmd/Ctrl with Up, Down, Tab or Escape now acts on the picker
instead of falling through to the window.
- @ picker Escape now also returns the caret to the composer.
Kept on purpose in Group Chat:
- Picker keys and Cmd/Ctrl+Enter stop propagating, so a picker Tab does not
move panel focus and a picker Escape does not blur the composer.
- Cmd+F opens the room's Find bar, refocuses it when already open, stops
propagation, and leaves Cmd+Shift+F to the window.
- Enter-to-send comes from the global setting only (no per-tab override).
- Escape with the picker closed is still handled by the window's
handleEscapeInMain.
- Cmd+Shift+Enter (Forced Parallel Send) and the steer chord stay AI-only.

Walkthrough
The change adds shared handlers for composer Find, picker, send, Escape, and IME-composition behavior. The terminal input hook and Group Chat input use these handlers. Tests cover keyboard behavior, focus, sending, and window-key propagation.
Shared handlers implement Find, picker, send, Escape, and IME-composition behavior. Tests cover handler behavior and isolation. Documentation describes the handlers and their options.
The terminal input hook delegates Find, picker, send, and Escape handling to shared handlers. Tests cover picker focus during Escape and IME composition, and forced-parallel-send behavior during composition.
Group Chat integration src/renderer/components/GroupChatInput.tsx, src/__tests__/renderer/components/GroupChatInput.test.tsx
Group Chat input delegates Find, mention-picker, and send handling to shared handlers. Tests cover send modes, picker behavior, search shortcuts, and window-key propagation.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a refactor that moves composer key handling into code shared by AI chat and Group Chat. The changeset matches this. New shared handlers in composerKeyDown.ts for Find, the @ picker, send, and Escape are wired into GroupChatInput.tsx and useInputKeyDown.ts, and the tests cover both surfaces. The title is concise and uses the conventional commit prefix. It does not mention the IME guard or the Escape propagation fix, but those are secondary to the primary refactor.

The CLAUDE.md index is symbols and paths only (review note on #1890).
Trims the send column and Attach Image lines #1890 added, and this
step's composer keys line. The dropped usage notes (NotificationSendControls
and the room's disabled / warning tone, the duplicate and read error
reporting, clicking the input through its ref, isolateFromWindowKeys) are
already in their full entries in docs/agent-guides/CANONICAL-UTILITIES.md.
The send column line was 319 characters, one under the docs:verify cap.
handleComposerSendKey calls send() for both Enter modes without checking e.nativeEvent.isComposing. Enter confirms the active IME candidate, so this can submit partially composed text in either composer.

The Progress section and the Step sequence table still said steps 2-5
were on unmerged stacked branches. Step 2 merged into rc as #1890
(9d6f5b2), so its Progress row cites the rc merge commit as step 1's
does, and its Step sequence note says merged. Steps 3, 4 and 5 name
their PRs (#1891, #1892, #1945), and step 3 now sits off rc rather than
on step 2.
The step commits in both tables are unchanged: each branch's tip moved
on 2026-10-28 only by a CLAUDE.md index trim and the merges that carry
it up the stack, which complete no rows. The Progress intro says so.
…position
An Enter that confirms an IME candidate went to handleComposerSendKey and
sent the half-composed draft, in both composers (CodeRabbit on #1891). Only
the AI composer's steer chord checked for a composition.
New isImeComposing() in composerKeyDown.ts is the one check: isComposing, or
keyCode 229 for Safari, which fires the confirming Enter after
compositionend with isComposing already false. While it is true:
- handleComposerSendKey sends on no Enter, with or without Cmd/Ctrl.
- handleComposerPickerKey acts on none of Up, Down, Tab, Enter or Escape
(accept, close, move), since the IME uses them for its candidates.
Both still claim the key so the surface's own branches do not act on it, and
neither calls preventDefault, which would keep the key from the IME.
An isolated composer still stops what it stopped before.
The AI composer's own branches use the same check: the steer chord (now also
covers Safari), Forced Parallel Send, and the picker's Left/Right category
cycling, which mid-composition move between IME segments.
Group Chat behaviour changes:
- Enter (any modifier) during an IME composition no longer sends, and in the
@ picker no longer accepts. Up, Down, Tab and Escape in the picker are left
to the IME too. Cmd/Ctrl+Enter still never reaches the window handler.
…he @ picker
In AI chat, Escape in the @ picker closed it and focused the composer, then
the key reached the window's handleEscapeInMain, which blurs any composer it
sees Escape in and moved focus to the transcript. The room never had this,
because isolateFromWindowKeys stops every picker key there. The behaviour
predates step 3 (the old useInputKeyDown picker branch did the same).
handleComposerPickerKey now stops propagation for its Escape on every
surface, isolated or not, including the Escape an IME uses to cancel a
composition. Only the picker's Escape: the AI composer's other picker keys
still reach the window as before, and Escape with the picker closed is not
touched (the picker branch is never entered), so it still leaves the
composer through handleComposerSendKey in AI chat and handleEscapeInMain in
the room. The window handlers that listen for Escape all act on a surface of
their own (menus, overlays, an external drag) that is not open while the
user types in the picker; the layer stack runs at capture and is unaffected.
Group Chat behaviour changes: none (its picker Escape already stopped).
Fixed in e30be29: a new isImeComposing() in composerKeyDown.ts (checks isComposing, plus keyCode 229 for Safari, which sends the confirming Enter after compositionend) now stops every Enter from sending and every @ picker key from acting while a composition is active, in both composers. The AI composer's steer, Forced Parallel Send and category-cycling branches use the same check, and there are tests for the Chromium and Safari event shapes.
