Request changes for one confirmed P2 privacy-check defect, already reported in the existing canary thread; no duplicate inline comment added.
At scripts/check-gvisor-start-trial.py:47–48,55,64, a marker containing a quote is accepted as ASCII, but ordinary JSON encoding escapes it. Both the raw-byte scan and the purported decoded checks (which serialize the strings again) miss it. Credential-free reproduction: use "A" * 15 + '"' as the marker, otherwise valid one-start evidence, and an additional artifact containing json.dumps({"argv": [marker]}). check(...) returns 1 instead of rejecting the retained canary. Putting that marker in matching manifest/event identity strings also passes. This can falsely clear the synthetic argv/cwd privacy check before artifacts are shared. Restrict accepted markers to a documented JSON-literal alphabet such as [A-Za-z0-9_-]{16,}, or correctly inspect decoded strings; add regressions for quotes/backslashes and escaped records. The disclosed inability to detect every encoding is reasonable, but accepting markers hidden by ordinary JSON encoding defeats this check's basic use.
Reviewed all seven files at 93d460164dbff01ed2635375f2c053f5f58d927a against main at c7a77c13a6b7fb463cee3c5fc38b28efdde1cb1c. The change is useful: target main has a single-ID flag, so repeating it replaces the previous ID; the new immutable exact-ID allowlist enables one receiver to accept multiple independently obtained IDs. It preserves single-ID use, serialization of output, and the experimental boundary without new dependencies or normal node-agent startup changes. No additional material compatibility, concurrency, or lifecycle regression found.
History: merged receiver #1024 supplies the transport, not this trial tooling; issue #894 and accepted experiment #23 establish the project fit. Design #14 is overlapping broader work, not a superseding trial checker; its dismissed approval explicitly concerned LFX timing, not technical rejection. Earlier #23 privacy objections and #1024 output/shutdown objections were fixed before acceptance; this PR retains those fixes. Older #187/#164 concern application-profile initialization, not SecCheck transport. Bounded repository PR/issue searches covered open/closed/merged records with gVisor, SecCheck, container/start, runtime visibility, remote sink, and checker-name terms (100-result caps per query); no superseding implementation found, which does not exclude unlinked work.
Validation: in a Bubblewrap sandbox with empty environment, no credentials, read-only source, private temporary storage and networking disabled, all six Python unit tests passed; go test -race ids_linux.go ids_linux_test.go -count=1 passed using local Go 1.27.3. Independent reproductions confirmed the canary defect. GitHub reports successful Go-test/build, component, benchmark and security checks for this head (Go workflow). These do not cover the missing canary regression. I did not run the full package/repository suite, full build/vet, or live runsc/CRI/GKE trials locally; live gates are correctly marked pending and do not themselves block this preparation PR.
Nonblocking: the existing blank-line thread is valid validation hardening, but skipping blank lines does not hide missing counted starts. At checker lines 74–79, +00:60 also passes because Python normalizes the offset; constrain offset minutes to 00–59 and test it. This tool explicitly disclaims timing proof, so I treat that as lower-priority schema hardening. The architecture review found a small readiness race in docs lines 112–115: socket existence precedes Listen; a bounded successful connection/handshake would be stronger readiness evidence. No architectural merge blocker.
Verdict: request changes for the reproduced canary false negative. Open/non-draft/mergeable status, unchanged head/target and review context were rechecked immediately before submission.

🟡 Minor · Reject byte-identical start records before counting them. · check-gvisor-start-trial.py:83
scripts/check-gvisor-start-trial.py:83
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winReject byte-identical start records before counting them.
The count check accepts two identical JSONL lines for an ID that expects two starts. The checker never compares record content, so one real start can be missing while the trial still passes. Rejecting repeated lines closes this gap. Real start records carry an
ObservedAttimestamp with up to nine fractional digits, so two separate starts should not produce identical lines.🐛 Suggested fix

Re-reviewed e2e9882bc70b0ca70fe41f0e35bf1642c922a7ab against current main at d4bb9dbf3212880c7e7b1cc0d429823f1d9b0b8f. The previous P2 canary blocker is fixed. The safe marker alphabet and added regressions address ordinary JSON escaping; blank-line rejection and timezone bounds are also corrected. The new version-1 readiness handshake matches the receiver protocol and resolves pathname-only readiness.
Request changes for one remaining P2 in the trial procedure, already identified in this thread; no duplicate inline comment added. docs/gvisor-start-probe.md:43 configures the trace sink to send to /run/kubescape/gvisor-events.sock, but the repeated-start probe at line 106 and readiness check at line 118 use $TRIAL_DIR/events.sock. Following the supplied configuration and commands therefore passes readiness on a receiver that runsc does not target, resulting in missing starts or a sink connection failure. The checker fails closed afterward, but the primary deliverable—a repeatable trial procedure—cannot work as written. Explicitly configure the sink endpoint to the same absolute pathname as both the probe and readiness check, or use the original pathname consistently. Show the substituted JSON or state that substitution is required; JSON itself does not expand shell variables.
Validation: all 14 Python tests passed in a credential-free Bubblewrap sandbox with networking disabled and private temporary storage. The two new canary regression methods fail against the prior checker, establishing before/after coverage. Static review covered the three updated files and retained seven-file PR scope. Latest Go/build CI, component, benchmark and security checks report success for this head. No full local package/build/vet or live runsc/CRI/GKE trial was run; unchanged Go code retains the prior named-file race-test evidence, not a fresh local rerun. The target branch advanced only in unrelated process-tree reparenting files.
The bot's identical-record concern is nonblocking: an expected count of two can be satisfied by two copies of one record, but this checker explicitly compares supplied counts rather than authenticating events. Narrowing the “rejects duplicate starts” wording to excess-count detection would clarify this limit. No new production API, dependency, concurrency or resource-lifecycle concern found.
Purpose and history remain established by merged receiver #1024, accepted experiment #23 and issue #894. Design #14 remains broader companion work; its earlier approval dismissal concerned scheduling, not technical rejection. Refreshed all-state gVisor/SecCheck/remote-sink searches (100-result caps) found no superseding trial tooling; unlinked work remains outside that bounded evidence.
Open/non-draft/mergeable state, unchanged latest head and current target, and new reviews/comments were checked immediately before submission. The old changes-requested review is not the reason for this verdict: its defect is satisfied; the concrete endpoint inconsistency remains.

Approve 9f2d0a36f64e41eadc2be13ad1867440051419c4 against main at d4bb9dbf3212880c7e7b1cc0d429823f1d9b0b8f. No remaining material blockers found. Both previous P2 findings are addressed: accepted canaries cannot be hidden by ordinary JSON quoting, and the trace configuration, repeated-start probe and readiness handshake now consistently use /run/kubescape/gvisor-events.sock. Alternate-path substitution is explicit. Blank-record and timezone checks remain fixed, and count/replay limitations are now accurately documented.
The change remains useful preparation for the accepted experiment: multiple exact runtime IDs can share one receiver, while the checker validates retained counts without claiming live-runtime provenance or production integration. No new dependency or normal node-agent startup change. The latest delta is documentation only; no new compatibility, concurrency or resource-lifecycle issue found. Independent implementation and architecture re-reviews found no blockers.
Fresh credential-free, network-isolated validation: all 14 Python checker tests passed; final documentation whitespace check passed. Previously established canary regressions fail on the original checker and pass after the fix. Unchanged Go allowlist code retains the earlier named-file race-test evidence; I did not rerun full local package/build/vet checks or live runsc/CRI/GKE trials. Latest Go/build CI, component, benchmark and security checks report success for this exact head. Live trial gates appropriately remain pending.
History remains as documented in the original review: merged receiver #1024, accepted experiment #23 and issue #894 establish necessity. Design #14 is broader companion work; its dismissed approval was a timing decision, not technical rejection. Refreshed all-state gVisor/SecCheck/remote-sink PR/issue searches (100-result caps) found no superseding tooling; unlinked work cannot be excluded.
The bot's schema-preserving-input wording suggestion is optional: the receiver already emits sanitized, restricted-schema records, and the procedure does not instruct operators to redact required fields before checking. The checker correctly fails closed if those fields are changed. No duplicate feedback added.
Immediately before submission, confirmed open/non-draft/mergeable status, unchanged head/current target and no new review blockers. Earlier changes-requested findings are satisfied by the current code and documentation. This approval covers trial preparation, not demonstrated live gVisor or managed-GKE support.
The receiver from #1024 is merged, but its live
runsctrial is still outstanding. Before wiring starts into node-agent, I wanted to make the repeated-start and concurrent-sandbox checks practical and give us a consistent way to review the evidence. The probe now accepts repeated
--container-idflags, so one receiver can accept starts for multiple exact IDs obtained independently from the runtime. Single-ID usage still works. This remains a controlled-trial allowlist, not the production runtime inventory join.I added a small Python checker that compares the probe's JSONL output against a runtime-derived ID-to-count manifest. It rejects missing or excess start counts, unknown identities, nonzero sender-reported drops, malformed records, unexpected fields and the synthetic privacy marker in the specified artifacts. Failure diagnostics do not echo input records. The documentation covers how to use it and includes a trial-record template with all live gates explicitly marked pending.
A passing checker result only establishes consistency of the supplied artifacts. It does not authenticate the manifest, prove concurrent execution, measure local queue loss, establish Kubernetes attribution or show that application code ran. Those need independently recorded runtime evidence and review.
Validation completed:
[A-Za-z0-9_-]{16,}so ordinary JSON encoding cannot hide them.git diff --checkpassed.The repository's Go 1.27 toolchain download did not complete here. The isolated checks above are supplemental: they do not replace testing with the repository's exact toolchain and pinned dependencies, including x/sys v0.48.0. Repository dependency files are unchanged. Linux socket/process tests were compiled but not executed for this branch. No live
runsc, containerd, CRI, host eBPF or managed GKE trial was run. This branch prepares that trial and does not claim its gates have passed.Related: accepted experiment proposal, merged receiver.
