Summary

Closes #7279.

Vertex gemini-4-argon returns HTTP 400 (Requests ending with a model turn are not supported) after an image-producing tool, even when the request ends in a user turn. Nest matched images inside functionResponse.parts. If duplicate or mismatched results contain images, preserve the entire marked orphan batch in a separate user turn after the complete function-response batch. Preserve text, IDs, names, result order and image bytes without inventing ownership or successful execution. Each orphan retains the existing combined-text-then-images representation; this does not promise the original interleaving of text and images within a result.

The change is limited to Vertex gemini-4-argon. Text-only and standalone orphans, other Google routes, and existing history/signature repairs retain their behavior. Tests cover image ownership, route isolation, missing results, unchanged input history, and Argon image continuation with streamed/buffered signature replay. The Google contract, historical decision records and English/Korean guides are updated. No dependencies, settings or retries are added.

Maintainer follow-up at 950cf88d41da7df0ae713a8c239f18a51bd70ee7

This head is current dev (5f6a62932c, which now includes #7266) merged into this branch with a merge commit (eeef21800b, no conflicts), plus three test-only commits. Runtime code is the contributor's 13f86ab serializer; src/adapters/google.ts differs from dev only by this PR's change.

  • 08d49013fb: one continuation that seeds a real thought signature, then checks that the matched image nests in functionResponse.parts, the duplicate image moves to the marked orphan turn, and neither image's bytes appear in text parts.
  • 5ff2cdf588: the continuation request with streaming on and off, and isError: true results keeping matched-image ownership and orphan placement.
  • 950cf88d41: combined fix(vertex): honor project and location for API-key inference #7266 + fix(google): preserve matched and orphan Vertex Argon tool images #7280 cases on the same request. A configured-project API key uses /v1/projects/<project>/locations/global/…, and a projectless key stays on the express endpoint, with conflicting GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT/GCLOUD_PROJECT/GOOGLE_CLOUD_LOCATION set (restored afterwards). Both cases send x-goog-api-key with no Authorization, nest the matched image, and separate the duplicate.

Results (macOS, Bun 1.4.3, official scripts/test.ts runner with the home guard on):

  • tests/adapters/google: 825 passed, 0 failed (37 files). In google-vertex-thought-signature.test.ts, 38 passed.
  • Red checks:
    • With src/adapters/google.ts from 2a10a2bc45, the new image tests fail (12 failures in the file).
    • Forcing API keys to express in google-vertex-endpoint.ts fails the combined project case at its URL assertion.
    • Both mutations ran under an exit trap; restoring the source was confirmed with cmp.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, git diff --check, plus tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts, tests/test-layout.test.ts and tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts (36 passed): all exit 0.
  • Full bun run test: 48,990 passed, 120 skipped, 3 failed (49,113 tests, 2,447 files). None of the three failures involve this change:
    • tests/ci-workflows/bun-runtime.test.ts: the real-home guard refuses to delete a fixture because this worktree sits under ~/.codex. This is a checkout-location artifact.
    • tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts ("connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart"): it fails the same way on an unmodified dev tree.
    • tests/responses/droid-reasoning-defaults.test.ts: run alone, it passes on both this tree and dev (28/28). It fails only under full-suite load on a shared machine.
  • Hosted CI at 950cf88d41da7df0ae713a8c239f18a51bd70ee7: Cross-platform CI (run 39068366545, four test shards included), Catalog async contracts, React Doctor, Enforce PR target branch, PR hygiene and PR Labeler all success. macOS/Windows legs are skipped on PRs by repository policy.
  • Review: an independent reviewer returned NEAR-PASS on 08d49013fb because streaming continuations and error results were untested. Both gaps were fixed in 5ff2cdf588, and the re-review is PASS. The final-head review at 950cf88d41da7df0ae713a8c239f18a51bd70ee7 is also PASS: fix(vertex): honor project and location for API-key inference #7266's endpoint selection and auth are byte-identical to dev.
  • CodeRabbit's request to register ADR-7280 in structure/manifest.json was answered without a change. Decision records are owned only through the > Decision record: link, and scripts/structure-ssot.ts excludes decisions/ from manifest parity (comment).
  • Security: no credential, header or endpoint code changes in this PR. The combined tests only assert fix(vertex): honor project and location for API-key inference #7266's existing API-key header and the absence of Authorization. Test credentials are synthetic.

The contributor's original verification below refers to 13f86ab.

Head: 13f86ab959542625d8127ead27602cd1a9528ac5. Base: current origin/dev, 2a10a2bc450067e3b475315ffeaefc4bb5b52ab4 (0 commits behind when checked). Runtime/tests are unchanged from af5a3db; the final commit only corrects two documentation statements, and structure:check passed again.

Run from the repository root on Windows with Bun 1.4.3; OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN pins the official wrapper to that version. The repository preload and real-home write guard remain enabled.

  • Before this follow-up, bun test tests/adapters/google/google-vertex-thought-signature.test.ts: 24 passed, 3 failed (duplicate images, mismatched images, images following a missing response).
  • After the fix, the Vertex, adjacency, empty-content and wire-compiler files: 54 passed, 0 failed. Two additional Argon image/signature cases were subsequently included in the final complete Google run.
  • Final bun test --isolate --parallel=4 ./tests/adapters/google/: 805 passed, 0 failed, 37 files, 2,748 assertions. An initial sandboxed run had 3 credential-cleanup timeouts and one late assertion error alongside Windows ACL denials. The identical suite passed with the required OS access; no test thresholds or guards were weakened.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, and git diff --check: passed.
  • In docs-site, bun run build with ASTRO_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1: passed, 577 pages and 81,423 internal links. Locked dependencies were already installed and unchanged.
  • bun run test:changed on the final runtime/test content: 720/2468 files selected; 900-second limit, exit 124. The incomplete log contains 5,624 passing and 70 failing result lines, not final suite totals. Failures include listener/socket setup and cleanup, EBUSY/ACL background work, spend-ledger ownership, native Codex/Claude routing, and timeouts. This run used normal OS access and retained the official limits and home guard. These failures have not been reproduced on the baseline and are not being dismissed as established pre-existing failures. The last commit only corrects two documentation statements, verified separately. Broader validation is incomplete; this PR remains draft.

Live checks used only synthetic input and the current PR sources, bound by source hashes:

  • Before the follow-up, matched-plus-duplicate and matched-plus-unmatched image histories returned 400. The current serializer returned 200 / STOP / OK for both, with 2,178 IMAGE input tokens each.
  • Actual model-generated tool call -> synthetic PNG result -> answer, through this checkout's production Responses parser, metadata serializer and Google adapter: streamed and buffered modes passed. Both reused the exact real upstream thought signature (116 bytes), including across a different synthetic replay session, with no skip sentinel. The model correctly read an eight-character code and rectangle color present only in the image: streaming H2QV6TLV / yellow, buffered AKLSGTMU / blue.
  • Limits: the buffered visual check timed out once at 90 seconds before headers, then passed on its second attempt with a 180-second per-request bound (188.7 seconds for both requests). Streaming took 36.5 seconds. The missing-result/orphan-image case timed out at 45 and 60 seconds; it is locally covered but not live-confirmed. No further retries were made. These probes do not cover the HTTP proxy server/router, response builder or previous_response_id persistence, and do not establish a latency fix. No user screenshots, conversations, credentials or raw signatures are published.

Earlier broad validation on ba3190f selected 720/2468 files and hit the 900-second limit (exit 124), with 9,994 passing and 80 failing result lines in the incomplete log. A pre-fix baseline spot check reproduced two symlink-related config-lock failures (29 passed, 2 failed); other failures were not established as baseline. This is historical evidence, not a passing result for this head. Full bun run test was not run after the changed subset exceeded 15 minutes. Remaining broad coverage and successful required CI are needed before merge.

CodeRabbit reviewed af5a3db and found one documentation issue: the old helper combines text before images, so the docs must promise orphan result order rather than original text/image interleaving. Fixed in 13f86ab, replied with validation and resolved the thread; CodeRabbit completed review through final head 13f86ab and confirmed the finding addressed. Its issue-scope warnings relied on the original suggestion to retain all orphan shapes; #7279 now explicitly records the new duplicate/mismatched 400 reproductions and required preservation behavior. That warning resolution was explained in the PR comments; a new automated scope-check result is not claimed. Its docstring-coverage advisory remains; implementation rationale is recorded inline and in the contract/ADRs, and the small test helpers follow the existing style. Local review traced serializer callers, orphan classification, the final wire compiler, image ownership, call ordering and route guards. Required fork CI awaits maintainer approval: current-head Cross-platform CI. Passing PR hygiene/target/label checks do not replace those jobs.

📝 Walkthrough

For Vertex gemini-4-argon, the Google adapter nests matched tool-result images in their function responses. It moves image-bearing orphan batches to a separate user turn. Other routes retain their existing representation. Tests, provider documentation, and decision records cover the changes.

Explanation

Issue #7279 requires a scoped Vertex gemini-4-argon fix. src/adapters/google.ts nests matched image parts inside the matching functionResponse.parts. It moves adjacent duplicate or mismatched image results to a separate marked user turn after the complete function-response batch. The serializer preserves result text, IDs, names, order, image bytes, and orphan status without assigning orphan images to a call. tests/adapters/google/google-vertex-thought-signature.test.ts covers matched images, duplicate and unknown IDs, missing results, reversed parallel results, error results, streamed and buffered continuation, signature replay, unchanged input history, route isolation, and text-only behavior. structure/providers/google.md and the two ADR files document the same route and model limits. The reported focused Google suite passed, and the unresolved broad-suite failures do not identify a failure in this change.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed runtime behavior is limited to Vertex gemini-4-argon. The tests for API-key project and express endpoints assert route and authentication isolation while exercising the scoped serializer; they do not add endpoint or authentication behavior. The test additions, provider documentation, ADRs, and Korean and English guide updates directly support issue #7279. Other Google routes, text-only results, standalone orphans, history repairs, and signature replay retain their existing behavior. No unrelated production changes, dependencies, settings, retries, or credential changes are shown.

The complete Google adapter suite passed (793 tests across 37 files), and CodeRabbit completed the current head without actionable comments. The broader changed-test run selected 720 files and hit the 900-second limit on Windows after environment/cleanup and integration failures; the PR description records the exact scope, partial results, and a limited pre-fix baseline check.

I am keeping this PR in draft because broader validation remains incomplete. Could a maintainer approve the queued fork CI for ba3190f? The Cross-platform CI run is awaiting approval with no jobs: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39049550160. This requests CI execution only; required successful checks and maintainer review are still needed before merge.

@coderabbitai review

Please review the new head af5a3db. The follow-up fixes a reproduced gap: duplicate or mismatched tool-result images must follow the complete function-response batch in a separate marked user turn on Vertex Argon. The previous head still returned 400 for those inputs; the current serializer returns 200 in both live probes. The Google suite passes 805 tests, including preservation, route isolation, missing results, and Argon image/signature continuation. The broader changed-test run is still in progress; the PR remains draft.

The one verified finding is corrected in 13f86ab: both documents now guarantee orphan result order and image bytes, without claiming original text/image interleaving. Runtime and tests are unchanged from af5a3db. The structure check passed again. Please review this final two-line documentation correction.

Follow-up is pushed as 13f86ab. The complete Google suite passes 805 tests. Actual Vertex streaming and buffered tool round trips preserved real thought signatures and correctly read random text/colors present only in synthetic PNGs. Duplicate and mismatched image histories now return 200 instead of the reproduced 400.

The new broad changed-test run still exceeded 900 seconds on Windows (720 files selected; 5,624 pass / 70 fail lines in an incomplete log). The PR records the errors and live timeout limitations, so it remains draft. The one verified CodeRabbit documentation finding was corrected and resolved; the final wording-only commit is under review.

Could a maintainer approve the current-head fork CI at https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39052932449? This asks only for CI execution. Successful required checks and maintainer review are still needed before merge.

The linked-issue scope warnings refer to #7279's original proposal to leave all orphan results unchanged. I have updated that issue, preserving its template and explicitly recording the follow-up discovery: adjacent duplicate and mismatched images reproduce the exact same Vertex Argon 400 even after matched images are nested. Both now return 200 with the current serializer. The updated expected behavior requires preserving those marked orphan images separately, without fabricated ownership. This is the same provider, model, serializer and failure, not an unrelated extension.

The final documentation correction has been verified by CodeRabbit and its thread is resolved. The docstring metric advisory remains; rationale is documented in the implementation and contract/ADRs. Broader validation and required CI are still incomplete, so the PR stays draft.

… tool images

Seeds a real replay signature, then checks on one continuation that the matched image nests in functionResponse.parts, the duplicate image moves to the following marked user turn, and neither image's bytes leak into text parts.

@coderabbitai Re: "Register ADR-7280 in the structure index" (outside-diff comment on structure/decisions/ADR-7280-vertex-argon-orphan-images.md:1).

Leaving this unchanged on purpose. This repository does not register decision records in structure/manifest.json:

  • structure/AGENTS.md (Decision records): a record has exactly one owning doc, and "Ownership is the > Decision record: link, and nothing else."
  • The owning links already exist in structure/providers/google.md (lines 126–127, for ADR-7279 and ADR-7280).
  • scripts/structure-ssot.ts:331–336 deliberately excludes decisions/ from manifest parity. Ownership is checked separately at :478–516. Existing records such as ADR-7004 are not in the manifest either.

Adding the ADR to the manifest would break that parity check, and structure/INDEX.md does not need regenerating for a decision record. bun run structure:check passes at 08d49013fb.

  • structure/AGENTS.md, Line 82 and Line 93, defines ownership through exactly one owning document’s > Decision record: link.
  • structure/providers/google.md, Line 127, already provides that link for ADR-7280.
  • scripts/structure-ssot.ts, Line 331–336, excludes decisions/ from manifest parity. Adding ADR-7280 to structure/manifest.json would fail that check.
  • scripts/structure-ssot.ts, Line 478–516, checks decision-record ownership separately.

No manifest entry or structure/INDEX.md regeneration is needed. My recommendation was incorrect.

Learning: In lidge-jun/opencodex, decision records under structure/decisions/ must not be registered in structure/manifest.json and do not require structure/INDEX.md regeneration. structure/AGENTS.md defines ownership exclusively through exactly one owning document’s `> Decision record:` link. scripts/structure-ssot.ts excludes decisions/ from manifest parity and validates decision-record ownership separately. ADR-7280 is owned through the link in structure/providers/google.md.

…on tool images

The continuation request now runs with stream on and off, and isError results keep matched-image nesting and orphan-image placement. Both cases fail on the pre-lidge-jun#7280 serializer.
Combines lidge-jun#7266 and lidge-jun#7280 on one request: a configured-project API key uses the project endpoint with location global, a projectless key stays on express, and in both the matched image nests in functionResponse.parts while the duplicate image moves to the marked orphan turn. Ambient project/location variables are set to conflicting values and restored.
