Summary

Operators of custom relays had no way to check whether one configured model actually answers, how fast its first token arrives, or which model id the upstream reports. The existing provider test only lists /models, and any completion sent through the proxy cannot be used for comparison because the proxy rewrites response.model to the requested id.

This adds an explicit, user-confirmed completion test for one provider and one model, following the maintainer triage on #2834 (keep the lightweight check, add a separate bounded fixed-prompt test, treat missing identity as unconfirmed):

  • API: POST /api/providers/test-completion?name=<provider> with body exactly { "model": "<id>", "confirm": true }. It returns TTFT, total latency, the upstream-reported model read from the raw stream before any rewrite, a strict match / mismatch / unknown comparison against the wire model, and identityVerified: false.
  • CLI: ocx provider test <name> --model <id> [--yes] prints a quota/cost warning and asks for consent. Non-TTY and --json runs require --yes. Running without --model keeps today's discovery test unchanged.
  • Dashboard: a "Model completion test" control in the provider workspace with model selection, a cost confirmation dialog, cancellation of stale results, and strings in all 11 locales.

Scope and safety:

  • Only key-auth OpenAI Chat and Responses wires run. Disabled, forward/OAuth, other adapters, and transports the runner cannot preserve (TLS profile, HTTP-version pin, request pacing, custom executor with an egress override) return applicable: false before any credential is read or any request is sent.
  • Requests use the provider's normal routedProviderConfig, the existing transport builders, and providerOutboundPost. There are no retries, no failover, and redirects are not followed.
  • The prompt is Reply exactly OK., output is capped at 32 tokens, the deadline is 20 s, and the stream is capped at 64 KiB. Every exit path aborts the request and cancels the stream.
  • No config, provider health, request history, or catalog state changes.

Contract: structure/provider-completion-diagnostic.md. Docs: docs-site/.../guides/web-dashboard.md, docs-site/.../reference/cli/providers-accounts.md.

Refs #2834 (partial slice: batch checks, capability probes, and history stay out of scope).

Security review

  • Credential destination: unchanged. The destination comes from the routed provider config, auth headers come from the existing Chat/Responses transport builders, and the request is sent through providerOutboundPost (provider egress, DNS pinning, HTTPS/private-network policy). Management credentials are never forwarded upstream.
  • Send-time authority: before the physical send, an in-memory fingerprint is rebuilt from the live provider row. It covers wire, URL, wire model, headers, auth, key selection and resolved key, destination policy, egress, and disabled state, plus a key-selection currency check. Any drift, or a derivation error, cancels with credential_changed and nothing is sent. Tests cover row replacement, in-place header, URL, and key changes, keyless rows, and alias-wire mutation during DNS.
  • Output safety: error messages are fixed strings, and HTTP failures report the status only, without reading the body. Upstream bodies, headers, and URLs are never returned, and there is no output preview. The upstream model string is masked against known secrets (resolved key and configured header values) before control-character stripping, 256-character truncation, and generic redaction. The comparison runs on the raw value first.
  • Consent: confirm: true is required server-side. Normal management authentication, Origin admission, and dashboard CSRF apply. Real-ingress tests prove that each rejected request sends 0 upstream requests, and an authorized positive control shows the same counter reach 1.
  • Reviews: an independent review of the first commit found a translator-budget leak, alias resolution ordered after wire selection, and an ingress send counter that observed the wrong transport. All three are fixed in 37582cee5b. The re-review passed with a security sign-off. Hosted Codex review then found two more issues: plain-HTTP local providers (ollama, vllm, lm-studio, litellm, operator allowPrivateNetwork rows) were refused, and OpenRouter/Vercel gateway routing was missing from the probe body. Both are fixed in 1aeeb5950e: the probe now uses the existing local-cleartext safeguard with inference-equal admission, reuses the adapter's routing helpers, and includes both decisions in the send-time fingerprint. A security re-review of that fix passed.

Verification

Landing refresh: merged origin/dev 12760bb0e1 (#7282 #7283 #7266 #7280 #7284 #7285 #7153) at 8f19877e46. The only conflict was the generated structure/INDEX.md, which was regenerated from the merged manifest. On that tree: root focused set 408 pass / 0 fail, GUI suite 3481 pass / 0 fail, and typecheck, structure, skill surface, privacy, GUI tsc/lint/i18n/build all exit 0.

All commands ran in this branch, using Bun 1.4.3 as the pinned test runner. The branch merges origin/dev 688b258454 (no conflicts). On the final head f017d34c3b, the combined focused set (11 files covering provider completion, connection, route registry, CLI, skill surface, layout, and ratchet) gives 338 pass / 0 fail, and typecheck, structure, skill surface, and privacy checks all exit 0. Earlier per-area runs:

Command Result
bun test tests/providers/provider-completion-test.test.ts tests/providers/provider-completion-test-authority.test.ts tests/providers/provider-completion-test-ingress.test.ts tests/providers/provider-connection-test.test.ts tests/server/management-route-registry.test.ts exit 0, 156 pass / 0 fail
bun test tests/cli/cli-provider-sync-result.test.ts tests/cli/cli-capability-provider-workflows.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/skill-ocx.test.ts exit 0, 126 pass / 0 fail
bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts exit 0, 36 pass / 0 fail
GUI: bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate tests (full GUI suite) exit 0, 3462 pass / 0 fail
GUI: bun x tsc -b --noEmit, bun run lint:gui, bun run lint:i18n, bun run build:gui exit 0
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun run skill:surface:check, docs-site build exit 0
Full root bun run test at 37582ce exit 1: one failure, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts › connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart (stored profile=false). It fails the same way on a clean origin/dev 2a10a2b snapshot on this machine (local Desktop model catalog ordering), so it is not caused by this change. All other tests pass; hosted Ubuntu shards are green.

Before the fix, the regression tests for the reviewed defects failed (1 pass / 8 fail), which shows they detect those defects. Live paid upstream calls were not run.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional single-model completion tests in the provider workspace and provider test command, alongside the existing connectivity check.
    • Tests require confirmation before sending a bounded request and report latency, upstream model metadata, and success or error details. Generated text is not displayed.
    • Results indicate when a test is unavailable or unsupported; diagnostics do not change provider health or request history.
  • Documentation
    • Documented completion-test behavior, supported configurations, consent requirements, and results in the dashboard and CLI guides.

Add a user-confirmed, bounded completion diagnostic for one provider and
one model, next to the existing no-completion connectivity probe:
POST /api/providers/test-completion, `ocx provider test <name> --model <id>`,
and a dashboard control in the provider workspace.

The runner talks to the upstream through the provider's normal
credential, destination and egress path and reports TTFT, total latency
and the raw upstream model metadata read before response.model is
rewritten. Comparison is metadata only and never claims identity.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a confirmed provider-model completion diagnostic through the management API, CLI, and provider workspace UI. It sends one bounded request and reports completion status, timing, applicability, and upstream model metadata. Tests and documentation cover the request flow and its constraints.

Changes: Provider completion diagnostic

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diagnostic endpoint and bounded execution
src/server/management/provider-completion-test.ts, src/server/management/provider-routes.ts, src/server/management/route-registry.ts, tests/helpers/provider-completion-fixture.ts, tests/providers/*, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, scripts/test-layout/layout.json
Adds the authenticated completion-test route and diagnostic execution. The diagnostic checks applicability and request authority before sending, bounds and parses the response stream, and returns timing, completion, error, and model-comparison results. Tests cover route access, authority changes, routing, limits, cancellation, and non-mutation.
CLI completion test command
src/cli/provider-runtime.ts, src/cli/capabilities-provider-models.ts, tests/cli/*, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/providers-accounts.md, skills/ocx/references/01_surface_providers-models.md
Adds --model and confirmation handling while retaining the discovery check when no model is supplied. The CLI formats completion results and assigns exit codes. Tests and CLI references cover confirmation, output, and error cases.
Provider workspace completion UI
gui/src/components/provider-workspace/*, gui/src/i18n/*, gui/tests/provider-completion-test.test.tsx
Adds a model selector, confirmation prompt, request cancellation, and result display to the provider overview. Adds translations, responsive styling, and tests for confirmation, cancellation, and displayed results.
Diagnostic documentation and contracts
