Summary

Codex Pool low-quota protection could pause an account and record a logged alert, but it never reached the operating system (#5649 kept open for exactly that). This adds an opt-in codexPool.lowQuotaProtection.actions.desktop flag (valid only with notify: true). When it is on, each notice is also handed to the notifier of the machine running the proxy:

  • macOS: /usr/bin/osascript with a constant on run argv script; the title and body are separate argv items.
  • Linux: notify-send from /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin or /bin only (no PATH lookup), -- before the text, markup escaped.
  • Windows and hosts without a supported notifier keep the alert logged. Windows delivery is a declared residual, so this PR uses Refs, not Closes.

The notification names the account only by its pseudonymous log label (p<hex6>), never its email, alias, id or credentials, and includes the window, usage, threshold and reset time. Behavior is unchanged unless desktop: true is set.

Status semantics: delivered means the OS notifier accepted the notice (it cannot see whether notification settings then hide it); a failed or timed-out notifier records failed and retries on a later eligible observation. A failed notice retries no sooner than five minutes later, and each episode writes its log line once, so a notifier that keeps failing (for example notify-send without a session bus) is not respawned per request. Every in-flight notice is abortable: shutdown cancels it immediately, and a reset boundary, recovery, account removal or policy change cancels it when the next quota observation detects that the episode ended. Each records exactly one cancelled and kills the child. Config mutations alone do not trigger cancellation (see the Codex review thread); until then the child is bounded by the five-second timeout. This also fixes a gap where a reset-boundary replacement never cancelled the previous in-flight notice. The flag is read from the live policy per notice, so toggling it needs no restart. In a test process with the home guard armed, no real notifier is reachable without an injected spawn.

Verification

  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test -- tests/codex-integration/low-quota-protection.test.ts tests/codex-integration/low-quota-desktop-notifier.test.ts: 60 pass / 0 fail. Earlier focused set including tests/server/server-background-lifecycle.test.ts and tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts: 86 pass / 0 fail. Independent reviewer rerun: 122 pass / 0 fail.
  • bun run typecheck: exit 0. bun run structure:check: passed. bun run privacy:scan: passed. tests/test-layout.test.ts, tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts and tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts: 78 pass. tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 9 pass.
  • After the review fix (7172442): bun run typecheck exit 0; focused protection + notifier + background-lifecycle + core-lab-boundary + file-size-ratchet: 103 pass / 0 fail; structure:check and privacy:scan passed.
  • After merging origin/dev 649f36c (merge commit 0c783fb, no conflicts; feat(accounts): auto-pause repeated permanent account refusals #7153 auto-pause and feat(responses): opt-in compression of outbound ChatGPT Responses request bodies #7285/feat(providers): explicit single-model completion test #7287 config/layout changes preserved alongside actions.desktop): bun run typecheck exit 0, structure:check and privacy:scan passed; low-quota + notifier + background-lifecycle + core-lab-boundary + ratchet + layout + structure-ssot: 181 pass / 0 fail; tests/config + feat(accounts): auto-pause repeated permanent account refusals #7153 auto-pause oauth/management/responses tests: 806 pass / 0 fail.
  • Red check: removing the new reset-replacement cancellation makes "an in-flight desktop notice is cancelled once by a new reset boundary" fail; restoring it passes.
  • Live macOS check outside the test runner: the real osascript path returned exit 0 in 96 ms (delivered). Whether the banner was visible was not captured, because that depends on system notification settings.
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test:changed (comparison ref origin/dev, merge base 2a10a2b; selected nearly the whole suite because src/types/config.ts changed): 40403 pass / 108 skip / 0 fail across 1855 files, exit 0 (452 s). It ran on the tree of 7572af8. The follow-up commit ebece38 adds only tests, which pass in the focused run above. OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 was used because the user-wide test lock was held by other concurrent worktree runs on the same machine. Hosted CI covers this exact head.
  • No GUI changes, so no screenshot.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (docs-site routing / codex-integration / management-api; structure config, runtime, openai-accounts, gui-and-management-api)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Spawning a host process: fixed absolute executables, argv only (no shell, no script interpolation), bounded 5 s timeout with kill, abort on every episode end, and opt-in default off. OS text carries only the pseudonymous label. The existing authenticated low-quota events API contract is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Low-quota alerts can optionally show desktop notifications on macOS and Linux when desktop notifications and the existing alert action are enabled. Alerts otherwise remain log-only; Windows and unsupported systems do not show desktop notifications.
    • Notifications identify accounts only by pseudonymous labels. Failed delivery can retry after five minutes, and in-progress notifications are cancelled if the quota episode ends.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration guidance and alert-history descriptions to explain desktop notification settings and delivery statuses.

Low-quota protection already pauses Codex Pool accounts and records a
"logged" alert, but never reached the operating system. A new opt-in
codexPool.lowQuotaProtection.actions.desktop flag (requires notify) hands
each notice to the proxy host's notifier: /usr/bin/osascript on macOS,
notify-send from a literal system path on Linux. Windows and hosts without
a notifier stay "logged".

The notice text is a separate argv item (constant AppleScript, "--" for
notify-send) and names the account only by its pseudonymous log label.
Each in-flight notice is abortable: every episode end (reset boundary,
recovery, account removal, policy change, shutdown) kills the child and
records one "cancelled". Delivery failures and timeouts record "failed"
and retry on a later eligible observation. Armed test processes never
reach a real notifier without an injected spawn.

📝 Walkthrough

Low-quota protection now supports opt-in desktop notifications on macOS and Linux. The change adds notifier execution, delivery status tracking, cancellation of in-flight notices, configuration validation, tests, and updated documentation.

Changes: Low-quota desktop notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Desktop notification configuration and wiring
src/types/config.ts, src/config/schema/leaf-validators.ts, src/server/background-lifecycle.ts, structure/config.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/configuration/routing.md, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md, structure/gui-and-management-api.md
The configuration adds actions.desktop, which requires notify. Background lifecycle registration provides a desktop-sink resolver. Documentation describes the option, supported hosts, Windows log-only behavior, and notification status meanings.
Platform notifier execution
src/codex/low-quota-desktop-notifier.ts, tests/codex-integration/low-quota-desktop-notifier.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The notifier formats notices and constructs macOS or Linux arguments. Delivery handles spawn errors, nonzero exits, timeouts, and aborts. Tests cover argument construction, sink resolution, delivery outcomes, and cleanup.
Episode delivery, cancellation, and outcomes
src/codex/low-quota-protection.ts, tests/codex-integration/low-quota-protection.test.ts, structure/providers/openai-accounts.md
Low-quota protection selects an injected sink first, then an opted-in desktop sink. It records logged, delivered, failed, or cancelled outcomes, retries failures after five minutes, and aborts delivery when an episode ends. Tests cover delivery, retries, cancellation, and configuration validation.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md exception, actor lidge-jun, admin). This is maintainer integration, not an independent review or self-approval.

Decision record:

  • independent-review: PASS — lane l5649 C-phase reviewer NEAR-PASS (test gaps) filled, final-head review PASS; CodeRabbit retry-storm finding fixed and confirmed; Codex P2 answered and documented; 2 threads resolved; since then only a dev merge
  • security: ACCEPTED — coordinator reviewed low-quota-desktop-notifier.ts: fixed absolute executables (/usr/bin/osascript, notify-send from fixed dirs, no PATH lookup), argv-only (no shell, AppleScript source constant, hostile-text test), 5 s timeout + kill, pseudonymous account label only, default off, disabled under the test home guard
  • attribution: N/A — original lane work
  • residual: ACCEPTED — Windows remains log-only (Refs Add configurable low-quota threshold actions (pause / desktop alert) #5649, issue stays open); banner visibility depends on OS notification settings (delivery exit 0 proven on macOS); config-only changes cancel at next observation (documented)
  • checklist: N/A — maintainer-owned branch on origin
