Summary

An npm-global Codex installation can change at the same path and version without changing the current update plan ID. Bind a versioned observation of the package manifest, declared launcher and supported platform backing files into the read-only plan. Missing, unreadable, changed or ambiguously selected required content produces install_content_unverified before a registry query.

The existing location digest keeps its meaning. Ordinary check calls do not pay for content hashing. The plan's lookup inputs come from the launcher snapshot; optional HOME/NODE_PATH data cannot displace the selection snapshot when its size limit is reached. Normal npm launcher links remain supported, with their resolution checked again during content observation.

Related to #2811. This is a prerequisite for apply, not an installer or a claim of whole-installation authenticity. Windows planning, apply/status, shim restoration and dashboard integration are outside this change. No GUI files change.

Verification

Windows, repository-selected Bun 1.4.3:

bun test tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-install-provenance.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-launcher-policy.test.ts tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update-boundary.test.ts tests/cli/ocx-launcher-source.test.ts

git diff --check
  • The initial review-fix batches passed 47/81 tests, with 21/4 skips respectively; the batches overlap. The ratchet batch passed 25 tests. Type, structure, privacy and whitespace checks passed. The final two-file global-lookup follow-up then passed bun test tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-install-provenance.test.ts (26 passed, 18 skipped, 0 failed) plus fresh type and whitespace checks. Its new regression failed before the fix while both healthy controls succeeded.
  • Against base 20d554f01b43a86cba3779b77510eb6974f90504, a same-location, same-version manifest byte change retained the old plan ID in the module-level regression. The candidate changes it. Disabling the final linkage check also makes the selected-launcher retarget regression fail; the backing-link case remains protected by the independent file-identity check.
  • A real published Node launcher check preserved a large, mixed-case Windows HOME/NODE_PATH environment. Local tests otherwise distinguish injected file fixtures from the production boundary.
  • Ubuntu test 4/4 at 9f6948ee ran and passed all three native cases: the actual npm-prefix-to-Node-launcher plan, held-window launcher retarget refusal, and descriptor cleanup across refused observations. The initial descriptor fixture lacked executable permission; the follow-up adds only its 0755 mode, leaving product code, assertions and timeouts unchanged. The npm-prefix case uses real offline npm installation and the production inspector with synthetic package bytes and stubbed registry answers. It is not a live Codex update or artifact-authenticity test. All four test shards, gates, structure and the other execution jobs now pass at this head; the aggregate ci job is queued. Skipped platform jobs are not treated as passes.
  • Full local-suite execution is deferred under the repository resource exception because several worktrees share this host. Existing Ubuntu CI supplies broader coverage. Supplemental domain verification also found an unchanged stale test-path comment and missing local GUI dependencies; neither is represented as passing or included in this runtime patch.
  • Ancestry was rechecked at publication: base 20d554f0 is three commits behind dev@299e8b68. Those commits touch chat request IDs, routing analytics and replay-refusal logs, with no files shared by this patch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Managed Codex CLI update plans now include a digest of key installed package and platform files. Changes to those files are reflected in the plan’s identity.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Update planning now stops before checking registry targets when required installation content cannot be verified. Missing or unmodelable files prevent a plan from being generated.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified which installed files are checked, how lookup environment values are bounded, and that the digest records an observation rather than guaranteeing execution or authenticity.

📝 Walkthrough

The Codex CLI launcher now passes bounded lookup environment values to install inspection. Install inspection can produce a digest for selected npm-global files. Update plans bind that digest to their identity and refuse planning when the digest is unavailable.

Changes: Codex CLI update content binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound lookup context
src/update/codex-cli-update-launch-policy.mjs, src/update/codex-cli-update-launch-policy.d.mts, bin/ocx.mjs, src/cli/launcher-context.ts, src/cli/codex-cli-update.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-launcher-policy.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update-boundary.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update.test.ts
The launcher captures HOME and NODE_PATH for the inspection context. The policy omits these seeds on Windows or when the serialized context exceeds 64 KiB. The inspection environment uses the captured values, not ambient values.
Install-content observation
src/codex/cli-install-provenance.ts, tests/helpers/codex-cli-content-fs.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-install-provenance.test.ts
Opt-in inspection of a proven npm-global layout hashes a bounded set of package and backing files. The report includes a digest only when lookup and file identity checks succeed. Tests cover changed content, incomplete lookups, and file or link changes during observation.
Plan identity and refusal
src/codex/cli-update-plan.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-cli-update-plan.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update-boundary.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-codex-cli-update.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-proc-scan-errors.test.ts, structure/codex-cli-update.md, structure/runtime.md
Plan creation requests content observation and refuses with install_content_unverified before registry resolution when no digest is available. When present, the digest contributes to the plan ID. The tests and documentation describe these cases.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9f694

The change binds Codex CLI update plans to observed install content. The new retarget test would fail on macOS and on hosts with a symlinked temp directory, so fix the temp-root canonicalization in the tests before merge. The production behavior itself is not shown to be affected.

Carried into #7546 together with #7513, with your authorship kept on the original commits and a Co-authored-by trailer on the follow-up. Both changes rewrite the same launcher snapshot, so they land as one PR. #7546's description records how the conflicts were resolved, the CodeRabbit single-source fix, and two macOS-only test fixes. A maintainer will close this PR.

Canonicalize both temporary roots used by the POSIX fixtures.

tempRoot returns the lexical mkdtempSync result. On macOS, that can retain the /var alias while realpathSync.native and /proc/self/fd return /private/var. The retarget seam then never sets backingSeen, so flipped remains false and the test fails. The Linux descriptor assertion has the same mismatch when TMPDIR is symlinked.

The production observer canonicalizes the paths it compares. The test must canonicalize its fixture root before deriving backingBin.

🐛 Suggested fix
-    const root = tempRoot("ocx-cli-content-fd-");
+    const root = realpathSync.native(tempRoot("ocx-cli-content-fd-"));
     const prefix = join(root, "npm-prefix");
-    const root = tempRoot("ocx-cli-content-retarget-");
+    const root = realpathSync.native(tempRoot("ocx-cli-content-retarget-"));
     const prefix = join(root, "npm-prefix");
