fix(codex): bind CLI update plans to installation content and pre-dotenv transport - #7546
Conversation
Carried onto the content-binding change from #7540. The launcher captures the proxy/CA map once beside the other pre-Bun values, so it counts against the required part of the launch-context budget before the optional HOME and NODE_PATH lookup seeds. The launcher transport fixture now supplies an install content digest, because a plan without one refuses before any npm query. (cherry picked from commit 60b1be2)
Derive codexCliUpdateBoundEnv's replaced keys from the launcher allowlist (CodeRabbit on #7513), so capture, parsing and the npm child cannot drift. Reconcile the two carried changes' tests: the source invariants now name the merged launcher text, the native retarget seam compares canonical paths (macOS temp roots sit behind /var -> /private/var), and the real npm-global plan test binds on the reported content digest, comparing plan ids only when the host has no live Codex session for the session scan to refuse on. The carried content-binding path still rejects the current published Linux x64 package because its executable exceeds the native-file size bound. This was found by streaming the official artifact, verifying its SHA-512 against registry metadata, and reading its TAR headers; no package was installed or executed. The targeted finding below needs a bounded-size correction and regression coverage. The existing synthetic npm fixture does not cover this published-artifact size.
Content observation picked the platform backing by Bun's process.arch. A Bun override or the PATH fallback can run another architecture under Rosetta, so the observer could hash a backing Node would never execute (Codex review on #7546). The Node launcher now records its own arch in the proof-bound inspection snapshot; the context parser accepts only known Node architectures, keeps an absent value null, and fails closed on anything else; and the inspection deps forward it. Also make the npm-global test's Bun precondition real: fall back to the running Bun and assert a string (CodeRabbit on #7546). Co-authored-by: Epinephrine <luvs01@hanmail.net>
@openai/codex@0.163.0-linux-x64 ships a 296,865,480-byte native binary, above the former 256 MiB MAX_NATIVE_BACKING_BYTES, so a normal Linux x64 install could only refuse with install_content_unverified (review by @luvs01 on #7546). The binary is streamed in 1 MiB chunks, so the bound limits read time rather than memory; 1 GiB keeps it finite with more than 3x headroom. A sparse-file regression binds the published size and refuses one byte past the bound before any read. Co-authored-by: Epinephrine <luvs01@hanmail.net>

The original published-binary size finding is addressed by 1d0d3c1: the finite 1 GiB bound accommodates the verified artifact and the reader remains chunked. One related Linux-only regression still uses the former overflow size, as noted below. Please update that fixture and verify the Linux refusal/descriptor case along with the new published-size case. I have not rerun those POSIX tests locally.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winFix the oversize fixture to exceed the 1 GiB limit.
The Linux descriptor-leak test creates a 257 MiB regular file, but
MAX_NATIVE_BACKING_BYTESis 1 GiB. The file therefore passes the size guard, reaches native content observation, and can produce a digest instead of satisfyingexpect(report.installContentDigest).toBeNull(). This makes the ordinary Linux test suite fail. Increase the sparse fixture above the configured bound.Suggested fix

Reviewed at 33ab461. The finite streaming bound now accommodates the published native backing, and the oversize refusal fixture derives its size from the same bound. Both the published-size and descriptor-refusal regressions passed in the current-head Linux test job: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39846025553/job/120072253554
My reported blocking findings are addressed. The aggregate CI check is still queued and must complete before merge.

It counts against the budget before any optional seed, and both serializations carry the identical map. The inherited-env dedupe keeps fix(codex): bind update transport trust environment #7513's transport keys alongside PATH, PATHEXT and the manager roots.installContentDigest. Under fix(codex): bind CLI update plans to observed installation content #7540, a plan whose inspection reports no content digest refuses before any npm query. That refusal is intended product behavior, so I did not add an environment switch to bypass it, since a project dotenv could use one. The bound is now 1 GiB: finite, with more than 3x headroom over the largest published binary. Reads stay chunked at 1 MiB, so memory use does not grow, and a file over the bound is refused byfstatbefore any read. A sparse-file test binds the published size and refusesbound + 1.
