Ports upstream steipete/CodexBar steipete#4717 (cf393586c, "feat(cli): add Copilot device-code login") to Win-CodexBar. Branch port/copilot-cli-login, commits 56cc450bb (login) and d5d7c3d53 (enable on success, exit codes, Ctrl-C), based on 96d5531e4.

Refs #987 (the CLI login work requested there; Grok and Kiro are a separate PR).

Summary

  • New command: codexbar config login --provider copilot [--json]. It starts GitHub's device-code flow, prints the verification URL and the one-time user code, then waits while you approve the code in the browser.
  • The token is never printed. Text mode prints the URL, the code and "Connected". JSON mode prints one object per line with upstream field names: authorization_pending (verificationURI, userCode, expiresIn), authorized (written only after the account is saved and Copilot is enabled), cancelled (Ctrl-C), or failed (reason, error).
  • Exit codes (documented in docs/CLI.md): 0 signed in and saved; 1 any other failure; 5 denied (access_denied); 6 expired (expired_token); 7 cancelled with Ctrl-C before the save; 64 usage. Exit 0 means the credential was saved.
  • After a saved login, the Copilot provider is turned on in settings, as upstream's CLI does (provider.enabled = true).
  • Polling uses the existing backoff. A slow_down response adds 5 seconds and the longer interval stays for the rest of the login. access_denied and expired_token end the login with a friendly error and save nothing.
  • The save step moved out of the Tauri shell into rust/src/providers/copilot/login.rs (start_device_login, finish_device_login). The desktop sign-in and the CLI both call it, so the account matching and labelling are the same on both surfaces. Accounts match by stable GitHub identity first, then by a legacy label, and signing in again updates the existing account.
  • Other providers fail before any network call: Login is only supported for copilot. Use --provider copilot.
  • CODEXBAR_GITHUB_BASE_URL overrides both GitHub roots (device-code on the web root, identity and usage on the API root) with one origin. Only https:// or loopback http:// (127.0.0.1, localhost, [::1]) origins with no path, query or credentials are accepted. Anything else is ignored with a warning and the GitHub defaults are used. The override applies to the desktop app too, so it should stay unset in normal use.
  • docs/CLI.md documents the command, the JSON shapes, the override and the enterprise note.

Behavior notes

  • Enterprise hosts are not added to the login flow. Upstream's device flow accepts an enterprise host; this port's device flow and the desktop sign-in always use github.com, as before this change. The usage client already maps an enterprise host to api.<host>, but no login path sets one.
  • Divergence from upstream: upstream's macOS GUI flow also enables the provider after sign-in. The Windows desktop sign-in does not change the enabled state; it is unchanged here on purpose. Only config login enables Copilot.
  • The desktop sign-in still opens the browser and emits the same provider-updated event. Only the save logic moved.

Tests

New unit tests (synthetic data only: example.com, octocat, fake tokens; a loopback fake GitHub server in providers/copilot/test_server.rs, no real network):

  • Device flow: success after a pending reply, slow_down adds 5 seconds and repeated slow_down accumulates, expired_token and access_denied end the flow, zero lifetime stops before polling.
  • Endpoint override: accepted https and loopback origins, rejected remote plain http and origins with paths, queries or credentials, falls back to GitHub.
  • Login save: new account saved with a stable identifier, re-login updates in place, a legacy account with the same identity is adopted, stored identity beats a legacy label match, a denied login saves nothing.
  • CLI output: text output shows URL, code and "Connected" and never the token; JSON output is one upstream-shaped event per line without the token; a denied JSON login reports a failed event and returns the error; an expired text login prints the code and returns an error.
  • Enable and exit codes: a successful login enables Copilot (saved.enabled == true, enable called once); denied and expired logins do not enable and exit 5 and 6; a Ctrl-C before any request saves nothing, reports cancelled and exits 7; a device-code HTTP 500 is a general failure (exit 1, reason: error). LoginFailure exit-code mapping is covered in cli/config/login.rs.
  • CLI parse: config login accepts the positional and --provider forms, requires a provider, and a non-copilot provider is rejected before any I/O.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all: run, clean.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: passes.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: passes.
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml (commit d5d7c3d53): 5308 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored (existing) in the library target, plus 1 passed in a second target.
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 803 passed, 0 failed at 56cc450bb. Not re-run at d5d7c3d53: that commit changes no Tauri source, and clippy on the Tauri manifest passes against it.
  • Focused: cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml login: 91 passed, 0 failed.
  • End-to-end codexbar.exe run against a loopback fake GitHub (see the proof section below): 4 scenarios, all as expected.
  • Not run: pnpm checks (no frontend change), CUA/desktop UI proof (no UI change), a real Ctrl-C signal in a console (cancel is covered by a unit test that uses a ready future).

Driving the CLI against a fake GitHub server

Set CODEXBAR_GITHUB_BASE_URL=http://127.0.0.1:<port> and serve these routes:

  • POST /login/device/code: returns device_code, user_code, verification_uri, expires_in, interval (0 for a fast run).
  • POST /login/oauth/access_token: first returns {"error":"authorization_pending"}, then {"access_token":"<fake>","token_type":"bearer","scope":"read:user"}. Use {"error":"slow_down"} to check the +5s backoff.
  • GET /user: returns {"login":"octocat","id":42}.
  • GET /copilot_internal/user: returns a minimal usage body such as {"copilot_plan":"individual","quota_snapshots":{}}.

Then run codexbar config login --provider copilot (or add --json). Check that the output has the URL and code and never the fake token, and that the account appears in the token-account store.

Reviewer notes: the GUI reads the same variable, so start the desktop app with it unset for a normal check.

Proof run (commit d5d7c3d53, debug codexbar.exe)

The fake server was a small loopback HttpListener script outside the repo. CODEXBAR_CONFIG pointed at a temp directory, so no real settings or token store was touched. Synthetic values only (octocat, ABCD-1234, a fake token).

Scenario Command Exit Output
Approve after one pending poll config login --provider copilot 0 URL, code, Connected. Copilot shows enabled: true in config providers --json. No plaintext token in the data files.
Approve after one pending poll config login --provider copilot --json 0 authorization_pending then authorized
Denied config login --provider copilot --json 5 failed, reason: denied
Expired config login --provider copilot 6 URL and code, then Error: GitHub device login failed: Device code expired

The server log shows the expected routes in each run: POST /login/device/code, POST /login/oauth/access_token (pending, then approved), GET /user, GET /copilot_internal/user.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Sign in to GitHub Copilot with config login --provider copilot. Follow the device-code prompts, or use JSON output to track login progress and results.
    • Successful sign-in saves the account and enables Copilot. Login failures, including denial, expiration, and cancellation, return distinct exit codes.
    • Configure the GitHub endpoint used for Copilot sign-in and usage requests with CODEXBAR_GITHUB_BASE_URL.
  • Documentation
    • Added CLI guidance for Copilot sign-in, output formats, cancellation, endpoint configuration, and login outcomes.

Factory Agent added 2 commits October 23, 2026 14:32
Add codexbar config login --provider copilot [--json]. It prints the GitHub verification URL and user code (never the token), polls with the existing backoff (persistent slow_down +5s), and saves the account through the same finish step the desktop app uses.

Move the shared start and finish logic into providers/copilot/login.rs so the Tauri shell and the CLI call one save path. Other providers get a friendly error before any network call.

Add CODEXBAR_GITHUB_BASE_URL to point both GitHub roots at a fake server (https or loopback http only). Add unit tests for success, slow_down, expired and denied flows, stdout without the token, and the CLI parser. Update docs/CLI.md.
After a saved login, config login turns the Copilot provider on.
Each failure has its own exit code (denied 5, expired 6, cancelled 7,
other 1, usage 64), and JSON output adds cancelled and failed.reason.
Ctrl-C stops the login before anything is saved.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds Copilot device-code login to the CLI, including text and JSON output, cancellation handling, and login-specific exit codes. It adds shared account-saving logic, configures GitHub request endpoints, and changes the desktop command to use the shared login flow.

Changes: Copilot Login

Layer / File(s) Summary
GitHub endpoints and device flow
rust/src/providers/copilot/endpoints.rs, rust/src/providers/copilot/api.rs, rust/src/providers/copilot/device_flow.rs, rust/src/providers/copilot/test_server.rs, rust/src/providers/copilot/mod.rs
Copilot API and device-flow requests use configurable GitHub endpoints. Endpoint overrides are validated, and device-flow polling supports injectable delays. Tests use a fake GitHub server to check request paths, polling, backoff, and OAuth errors.
Account saving and desktop integration
rust/src/providers/copilot/login.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/mod.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/system.rs
The shared login module saves or updates accounts using GitHub identity and can adopt legacy accounts. The desktop command now delegates device-login completion to this module.
CLI login flow and reporting
rust/src/cli/config.rs, rust/src/cli/config/login.rs, rust/src/cli/config/tests.rs, rust/src/cli/mod.rs, rust/src/main.rs, docs/CLI.md
The CLI adds Copilot login orchestration, text and JSON events, cancellation handling, and login-specific exit codes. Tests cover argument parsing and login outcomes. The documentation describes the command and GitHub endpoint override.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

No changed path exposes the access token. finish_device_login passes the token only to GitHub API authorization headers and TokenAccountStore; SavedCopilotAccount excludes it. CLI events contain only the verification URL, user code, expiry, status, and error text. Token persistence uses the existing secure_file helper in TokenAccountStore. The diff adds no writes or deletes to external application credential stores. Test tokens are explicitly synthetic fixtures.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The pull-request diff changes no Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn lockfile, or pnpm packageManager configuration. It adds no dependency and does not change a pinned pnpm version. The approval exception is therefore not needed.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes no files under apps/desktop-tauri/src, rust/src/tray, the float bar, settings, or window chrome. The Tauri change only moves Copilot login and account-save logic into shared provider code. It still opens the verification URL and emits the same provider-updated event. No visible UI effect is introduced, so Windows screenshots or a fresh-build proof note are not required.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The change adds provider-specific branching in shared code. rust/src/cli/config.rs:799-803 compares the parsed provider to ProviderId::Copilot, and rust/src/cli/config.rs:820-826 enables ProviderId::Copilot; this file is outside rust/src/providers/&lt;name&gt;/ and rust/src/core/provider_factory.rs. Copilot account data itself remains provider-scoped: rust/src/providers/copilot/login.rs:75-101 only loads and saves the Copilot store.

Resolution

Move Copilot-specific login dispatch and enablement into rust/src/providers/copilot/, or expose them through a provider-neutral registry in rust/src/core/provider_factory.rs. Remove the ProviderId::Copilot comparison and direct Copilot enablement from shared rust/src/cli/config.rs; keep shared CLI code provider-agnostic.

Move the Copilot-specific login code out of the shared CLI module.

The repository guidelines say: "Keep provider-specific logic inside rust/src/providers/<name>/. Shared paths have no cross-provider branching".

This change adds Copilot-specific code to shared CLI files:

  • rust/src/cli/config.rs: the id != ProviderId::Copilot branch, enable_copilot, run_copilot_login, and copilot_steps.
  • rust/src/cli/config/login.rs: impl From<CopilotLoginError> for ConfigLoginError.

Put the Copilot orchestration and the error mapping in rust/src/providers/copilot/. Keep only the generic event, exit-code, and reporter types in cli/config/login.rs.

For the provider check, add a typed field or a trait method with a default. For example, add supports_cli_login with a default of false. Then config.rs dispatches without naming ProviderId::Copilot.

As per coding guidelines: "Keep provider-specific logic inside rust/src/providers/<name>/. Shared paths have no cross-provider branching; when shared code needs a provider-specific answer, add a typed field or a trait method with a default."

@coderabbitai Thanks. Four findings are fixed in 42108a4. One is answered below.

  1. docs/CLI.md exit codes: exit code 1 now says that a failed enable step can follow a saved account, and names the error text. The summary line now says only 0 guarantees that the account is saved and Copilot is enabled, and lists the codes that mean nothing was saved.
  2. config.rs:852, failed enable(): the error is now Signed in and saved the account, but could not enable Copilot: <error>. New test failed_enable_reports_that_the_account_was_saved checks the message, exit code 1, and that the account stays saved.
  3. device_flow.rs timeout: the device-flow client is built like CopilotApi's, using credentialed_http_client_builder() with rustls and a 30-second timeout, so a stalled poll cannot hang the login.
  4. login.rs stale store: the match now runs on a snapshot and resolves to an account id. The store is reloaded just before it is changed and saved, so edits made meanwhile by the desktop app or another CLI are kept.
  5. config.rs:803, Copilot code in shared CLI (trivial): not changed in this PR. The provider logic (device flow, identity match, token save) is already in providers/copilot/login.rs, and the desktop shell uses it too. cli/config.rs only routes the config login command and turns events into output and exit codes. The stacked follow-up branch generalizes this into a per-provider router for Copilot, Grok and Kiro, the same split upstream's CLI uses. A supports_cli_login-style trait hook would change the shared Provider trait for three providers, so it belongs in its own refactor.

Checks: cargo fmt, cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml (5309 passed), clippy -D warnings on both manifests.
