Summary

Automation can't open the tray context menu without a right-click, and a right-click needs SetForegroundWindow, which takes the user's focus. This change lets proof runs read the live tray menu and activate its items without a right-click. Both hooks are inert outside proof mode.

  • Dump. When CODEXBAR_PROOF_TRAY_MENU_DUMP is set to an absolute path and proof mode is active, the app writes the live native tray menu as JSON after setup and after each menu install (rebuild_tray_menu and update_tray_status_items). The text and state are read back from the tauri Menu objects, so the dump shows what is actually set on the tray, including any Hide Personal Info masking. The file is written atomically (temp file in the same directory, then rename). The top level holds generation (increases by one per write in a process), timestamp (UTC, RFC 3339) and items. Each node has id, text, kind (item, check, submenu, separator or icon), enabled, checked and children.
  • Install order. Both rebuild paths now go through install_tray_menu, which runs set_menu and then the proof record and dump as one task on the main thread. The event loop runs these tasks in order, so a dump always matches the menu installed just before it. A failed set_menu skips the record and the dump. On the main thread the task runs inline. Outside proof mode, the only change is that menu installs run on the main thread.
  • Activate. The new Tauri command proof_activate_tray_item(id) runs the same handle_menu_event a native click runs, on the main thread. It returns an error unless proof mode is active, the id resolves through resolve_menu_action, and the id is an enabled leaf row of the menu currently installed on the tray. The installed-row check runs on the main thread right before the handler. The error text doesn't echo the id. The gate is a pure function, activation_allowed(proof_mode, id, in_installed_menu).
  • Docs. docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md gets a "Read and activate the tray menu" subsection in the proof-mode section. AGENTS.md gets one clause in the proof-harness bullet.

Files: apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/proof_tray_menu.rs (new), tray_bridge.rs (command, gate, install_tray_menu, setup record call, resolve_menu_action and MenuAction widened to pub(crate)), tray_menu.rs (test helpers only), tray_accounts.rs (account drift guard, test only), main.rs (module and command registration), docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md, AGENTS.md.

No frontend change. The command is not invoked from src/, so no proof router entry is needed. Automation calls it through window.__TAURI_INTERNALS__.invoke.

Behavior notes

  • Activation runs real actions. A provider toggle saves settings.json, Quit exits the app, and account actions run. Proof runs should use an isolated APPDATA home.
  • The activation call returns when the handler's synchronous part is done. Some rebuilds and all account actions run after that, so the dump can show the old state briefly. Poll for a higher generation.
  • The dump writes labels to the chosen path. Labels match what the user sees in the menu, so the file has the same privacy level as the screen. Use proof-only paths.

Checks

At ad5efd5:

  • cargo fmt --all: exit 0.
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 811 passed, 0 failed. This includes the new proof_tray_menu::tests::activatable_ids_are_enabled_leaves_at_any_depth and the extended tray_bridge::tests::proof_activation_requires_proof_mode_a_menu_action_and_an_installed_row.
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 5279 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings on both manifests: exit 0.
  • No frontend files changed, so pnpm test and pnpm run build were not run.

Windows desktop proof

Fresh debug build of ad5efd5, launched in proof mode (trayPanel) with an isolated home (APPDATA, LOCALAPPDATA, USERPROFILE and HOME under %TEMP%) on a secondary display, with CODEXBAR_PROOF_TRAY_MENU_DUMP set. Activation was driven over CDP through window.__TAURI_INTERNALS__.invoke on the main page target (matched by URL).

  • Startup wrote the dump (generation 3). PASS
  • Refused with the generic error: bogus, the disabled status row status_status_summary, and switch_claude_account:a:org. That id resolves to an action but isn't in the installed menu, and the earlier gate accepted it. PASS
  • toggle_provider:pi, twice. The first call turned Pi off: dump generation 6 showed it unchecked, and get_settings_snapshot returned enabledProviders [codex, claude]. The second call turned it on: generation 9 showed it checked, with [codex, claude, pi]. PASS
  • toggle_float_bar: generation 11 showed it checked. cua-driver list_windows showed the window "CodexBar Float Bar" (205x24), CDP showed the window=floatbar page target, and a cua-driver get_window_state screenshot shows the float bar rendering. PASS
  • The foreground window (another app) stayed the same for the whole run. The app was stopped by PID.

The screenshot stays on the proof machine (isolated-home run). An earlier run on the integration build also activated about and confirmed that the Settings window opened without taking focus.

Not covered

  • The atomic file write has no unit test. The test would leave a file behind, and I kept tests free of file writes.
  • Tray menu pixels. The proof reads the menu back from the native objects, but it never opens the menu on screen.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Proof runs can capture the live tray menu as JSON, including item labels, hierarchy, separators, enabled and checked states, a generation number, and timestamp.
    • During proof runs, enabled action items in the installed tray menu can be activated. Status rows, disabled items, unknown items, and items no longer present are rejected; activation is unavailable outside proof mode.
  • Documentation
    • Added instructions for capturing and inspecting tray menus, activating items, and tracking menu updates.

Let automation read and activate the native tray menu without a right-click, which would take focus.

- CODEXBAR_PROOF_TRAY_MENU_DUMP=<abs path> writes the live menu as JSON in proof mode after setup and each menu rebuild. Atomic write, with a per-process generation and a UTC timestamp.

- proof_activate_tray_item(id) runs the native click handler on the main thread. It is refused outside proof mode and for ids that do not resolve to a menu action.

- Tests: dump format, the activation gate, and drift guards that every actionable spec and account id resolves and status rows do not.

📝 Walkthrough

The proof harness can write the live tray menu to a generation-stamped JSON file and invoke permitted menu actions through a proof-only Tauri command.

Changes: Proof tray inspection and activation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Serialize the live tray menu
apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/proof_tray_menu.rs, docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md, AGENTS.md
The module converts native menu items, including their state and submenu children, to JSON. It validates the configured absolute path and writes snapshots with a generation number and timestamp. Tests cover serialized rows, enabled leaf IDs, and built menu state. The documentation describes the dump format and environment variable.
Record menus after installation
apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/main.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/tray_bridge.rs
Tray setup and successful menu installations record the installed menu. Rebuilds and status updates use the installation helper.
Dispatch proof-mode menu actions
apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/tray_bridge.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/tray_menu.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/tray_accounts.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/main.rs, docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md
The Tauri command rejects calls outside proof mode and IDs that do not resolve to enabled leaf items in the installed menu. Accepted actions run on the main thread. Tests cover action resolution and non-actionable rows. The Windows proof guide documents activation and dump polling.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The change does not introduce provider-data leakage or cross-provider branching. proof_tray_menu::nodes_from_native copies the text and state of the already-installed menu, preserving the existing submenu tree; it does not read, relabel, or combine account identity, plan, or email data. tray_bridge only records that menu and dispatches the existing action resolver. The account-menu production logic remains unchanged, and the added account test uses provider-specific fixtures only for validation. No added production code matches specific provider IDs.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

The changed code does not route tokens, cookies, API keys, OAuth credentials, or authorization headers to logs, user errors, snapshots, or files. The proof dump writes only tray item IDs, labels, kinds, and UI state from the already-installed menu; account labels use the existing personal-information masking path. Added logs contain fixed messages or OS errors, and activation errors do not echo the supplied ID. The only file mutation is the opt-in dump path from CODEXBAR_PROOF_TRAY_MENU_DUMP, so no other application's credential or keyring data is targeted or modified.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The PR changes the native tray menu path and adds proof-mode tray activation, so the UI-proof check applies. The supplied PR description is truncated after stating that no desktop or CUA proof was run. The later objective summary reports a fresh Windows proof, but it does not establish that the proof note appears in the PR description. The complete description or its attachments are unavailable.

Resolution

Provide the complete PR description, including any screenshots or a proof note from the fresh Windows build. If no such evidence exists, add it before approval.

@coderabbitai Fixed in 58a3ba2: both rebuild_tray_menu and update_tray_status_items now write the proof menu dump only when tray.set_menu returns Ok. On Err they log a tracing warning and skip the dump, so the generation does not advance for a menu that was never installed. Tauri tests 810 pass; clippy clean.

Validate proof activation against the current menu.

activation_allowed accepts every toggle_provider:<suffix> string because resolve_menu_action does not check the provider catalog. The tray menu creates provider rows only for providers in that catalog. A proof caller can therefore submit any toggle_provider:<unlisted-id> when that provider is absent from the current menu. The handler still adds or removes the ID in settings.enabled_providers, saves settings.json, and starts a provider refresh. Require the requested ID to match an enabled leaf in the current installed menu before dispatching it.

@coderabbitai All three findings from the second review are addressed in ad5efd5.

Validate proof activation against the current menu (tray_bridge.rs:359-378). Fixed. Each time a menu is installed, proof_tray_menu::record_installed reads it back and stores the ids of its enabled leaf rows (activatable_ids, recursive over submenus). activation_allowed now also needs the id to be in that set. The check runs on the main thread, right before the handler, so it sees the menu that is on the tray. So toggle_provider:<id> for a provider missing from the menu is refused, as is any action id the menu doesn't show. New unit tests cover the leaf collector and the extra gate.

Serialize set_menu and the snapshot write (line 397). Fixed without a lock. Both rebuild paths now call install_tray_menu, which posts set_menu plus the record and dump to the main thread as one task. The event loop runs those tasks in order, so a later install is never followed by an earlier snapshot. A lock held across set_menu from a worker thread would deadlock: tauri runs the menu calls on the main thread and waits for them, and the main thread can rebuild the menu itself (the toggle handlers do). When the caller is already on the main thread, tauri runs the task inline.

Run the Rust-manifest tests. Done. All of these pass on ad5efd5:

  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 5279 tests.
  • Tauri tests: 811.
  • cargo fmt --all, and clippy with -D warnings on both manifests: clean.

Desktop re-proof on a fresh debug build of ad5efd5, in proof mode with an isolated home:

  • Refused: bogus, a disabled status row, and switch_claude_account:a:org. That last id resolves to an action but isn't in the installed menu; the old gate let it through.
  • toggle_provider:pi twice: the dump and get_settings_snapshot agreed both times (off, then on).
  • toggle_float_bar opened the float bar window. cua-driver lists it, and I took a screenshot.
  • The foreground window stayed the same throughout.

docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md is updated to match.

@Finesssee I inspected ad5efd55a. The code addresses the two implementation findings:

  • Proof activation requires proof mode, a recognized action, and an enabled leaf ID from the installed menu. The check runs on the main thread immediately before the handler.
  • Both rebuild paths use install_tray_menu. Menu installation, recording, and dumping run in one main-thread task. Failed installations skip recording and dumping.

Your reported 5,279 Rust-manifest tests, 811 Tauri tests, formatting, and clippy results cover the requested checks. The desktop proof also covers the rejected IDs, settings changes, float-bar activation, and foreground preservation. I did not rerun those checks.

Please attach the desktop assertions and CUA screenshot to the PR if they are not already attached, as AGENTS.md requires.

## Architecture and data flow
[docs/ARCHITECTURE.md](docs/ARCHITECTURE.md) has the full picture. The rules that matter on every change:

- **Proof harness.** `CODEXBAR_PROOF_MODE` (for example `settings:menu`) opens one surface and turns off blur-dismiss for automation. `CODEXBAR_SEED_USAGE_JSON=<abs-path>` seeds synthetic bridge-shaped `ProviderUsageSnapshot` data into the provider cache at launch, pinned against refresh eviction. A malformed seed file logs a warning and is skipped. See [docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md](docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md#proof-mode).

## Testing & QA
### UI validation with CUA ([trycua/cua](https://github.com/trycua/cua))
[docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md](docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md) has the cua-driver install command (driver usually at `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Cua\cua-driver\bin\cua-driver.exe`), the CDP target URLs, the cua-driver session rules and the post-install checklist.

## Testing & QA
### Browser proof (`pnpm proof:check`)
The React surfaces also run in a plain browser over mocked IPC (`apps/desktop-tauri/proof.html`, fixtures in `src/proof/`). `pnpm proof:check`, run from `apps/desktop-tauri`, drives Chrome, Edge or Chromium over CDP through `scripts/proof-scenarios.json`. It prints PASS or FAIL for each scenario and saves screenshots. It runs on any OS, so subagents and CI can use it without a Windows desktop. Details: `docs/WINDOWS_PROOF.md` section 5.

# Proving UI changes on Windows

## Proof mode

`CODEXBAR_PROOF_MODE` opens one surface at startup and keeps it open for automation. In proof mode the app:

- shows each surface without activating it, so it never takes focus from the app you are using.
