Adds Near (near), the last tool of #959. For each input feature it adds the nearest feature of another layer:
near_fid: its OID, as the attribute table shows it;
near_dist: the ground distance to it, in units (Kilometers by default, as Spatial Join);
near_x, near_y: the point on it nearest the input feature, in lon/lat. Where they intersect, a point they share.
Parameters: input, near, optional distance (features with nothing that near get empty values) and units, output. Selections in both layers are honoured. Ties go to the first feature in the near layer's order. With one layer as both, a feature's nearest is another feature, not itself.
Distances are Spatial Join's Closest distances: Spatial Join's search is moved, unchanged, into a Nearby helper that both tools use. It looks features up through the grid index, widens the search from one cell until it finds a feature, and measures on the WGS 84 ellipsoid between the nearest points. join::nearest_points now returns that pair, and distance_m measures it. The point is found as the distance is, in a plane centred between the features, so on a long edge it can be off the geodesic by up to about 0.01 % of the distance (documented). Longitudes are brought back within ±180°.
For intersecting features, the shared point is one of a point layer's points on the other feature, else a point of the polygon overlap (by the overlay), else a point where their edges meet. Edges are sorted by their west end, so each edge is tried only against the other feature's edges that start before it ends and whose boxes meet it; two long borders that only touch still cost about the product of their edges, once per output row.
Also here, small follow-ups to #982 that would have reset its approval: an input feature that no overlay polygon meets is documented as copied unchanged, a multi-part feature is unioned only when an overlay polygon may meet it, and the overlay's masks share one helper (mask_of), which Near's shared-point search now uses too. Near gets an icon in the Tools pane, drawn in code.
This completes the roadmap item (removed from Solid ground; Near is listed under Done) and ticks the GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md entry.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passes, and the wasm build of rustgis-web succeeds.
Spatial Join's existing tests (Closest and Within a distance, grid against brute force, poles and the antimeridian) and its GEOS reference cases pass unchanged after the move to Nearby.
New unit tests: nearest polygon, distance against the ellipsoid and the far corner as the point; a point inside a polygon (distance 0, the point itself); search distance leaving a feature empty, and refused distances; one layer as both, without and with the grid index (21 points, so the search widens over 81°); a tie at a distance above zero going to the earlier feature; across the antimeridian (near_x within ±180°); a point over the middle of a line; a selection in the near layer; crossing lines and overlapping polygons giving a shared point.
hostile_params_never_panic has junk values for Near.
Related issue
Closes#959. Intersect landed in #980, Identity and Union in #982.
Added the Near analysis tool to the geoprocessing tools and feature gallery. It reports each selected feature’s nearest match, including its ID, ground distance, and nearest point, with an optional distance limit. When the same layer is used for both inputs, features are not matched to themselves.
Documentation
Updated the analysis guide with Near tool details and an example, and clarified how Identity and Intersect handle features without matching overlay polygons or geometry.
Updated the analysis feature list, roadmap, and parity status to reflect Near’s availability.
Intersect splits input features (points, lines or polygons) by the
polygons of an overlay layer: one feature per part inside an overlay
polygon, with the input's attributes followed by the overlay's (a taken
name gets a suffix). An overlay edge counts as inside, as for Clip.
Selections in both layers are honoured.
Clip's per-geometry logic becomes part_in, shared with Intersect, and
Spatial Join's extent grid becomes ExtentIndex, so Intersect prunes
candidates the same way. The GEOS reference corpus gains intersect
cases, a road along a zone's edge, and keys of several fields.
Part of opengeos#959.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Identity keeps every part of the input: each feature's parts in the
overlay polygons, with both layers' attributes, then its part outside
them all. Union, for two polygon layers, also adds each overlay
polygon's part outside every input polygon. Both follow Intersect's
rules for fields, edges and selections.
Intersect, Identity and Union are now one overlay function, and Clip's
helper becomes part(g, mask, inside), which also gives the part
outside a mask. GEOS reference cases cover identity of polygons, lines
and points, and union.
Part of opengeos#959.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Near copies the input and adds, for each feature, the nearest feature
of another layer: its OID, the ground distance to it in the chosen
units, and the point on it nearest the input feature (a point they
share when they intersect), within an optional search distance. With
one layer as both, a feature's nearest is another feature.
Spatial Join's Closest search moves, unchanged, into Nearby, which both
tools use, and join::nearest_points returns the pair distance_m
measures. Longitudes of the point are brought back within ±180°.

Walkthrough
The changes add the Near analysis tool, which reports the nearest feature’s ID, distance, and nearest point. Spatial Join uses shared proximity-search logic. Overlay processing and tool listings are also updated.
A public function returns nearest coordinates. Shared search logic handles bounded and closest-feature searches, and Spatial Join uses it for distance-based matching.
Near tool behavior and validation crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Near searches selected features and appends collision-safe ID, distance, and point fields. Tests cover search limits, ties, selections, geometry cases, and invalid distances. The guide describes Near outputs and search behavior.
Overlay processing uses a shared mask helper and dissolves input geometry only when a candidate extent intersects it. Tests cover unchanged input geometry when no overlay polygon meets it. The guide and icon comment describe Identity behavior.

Explanation
The description includes the required Summary, Testing, and Related issue sections. It provides detailed behavior, implementation context, test coverage, and linked issues. It does not include UI evidence for the new icon, but this is a minor omission and the description remains substantially complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#959] requires Near to copy selected input features and add the nearest feature OID, WGS 84 ellipsoidal distance in the selected units, and nearest longitude/latitude. The near tool is registered under Analysis › Proximity with input, near, distance, units, and output parameters. near uses Nearby::closest, excludes the source row when both layers are the same, preserves near-layer order for ties, and leaves values empty when no match is within the limit. The implementation adds collision-safe output fields and honors input and near selections. nearest_points and distance_m provide the shared nearest-point and ellipsoid behavior. The PR reports automated tests for these cases and the required tool placement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to [#959]. Nearby and nearest_points support Near and preserve shared Spatial Join behavior. mask_of supports Near's shared-point search. The Identity and Union follow-ups are within the four-tool feature named by [#959] and support the shared overlay implementation. Tool registration, engine listing, icon, documentation, roadmap, parity, and assistant skill updates document or expose Near. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Performance (low severity, medium confidence):closest has already measured this pair through ground_distance → distance_m → nearest_points. Calling nearest_points(g, j.geom) again here repeats the two-pass plane search for every feature that has a non-zero distance. Returning the nearest-point pair from closest (or caching it alongside the distance) would avoid the second search. The longitude wrap is fine as is.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Leaving this one: it is one more measurement for each output row, while closest measures every candidate it can't rule out, so the repeat is a small share of Near's work. Returning the pair from closest would mean threading points through Nearby's cache, which Spatial Join shares and doesn't need. Worth doing if a profile says so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): Not changed now. The repeat costs one plane search per output row with a non-zero distance. Returning the pair from closest would thread points through Nearby's cache, which Spatial Join shares. Worth doing if a profile shows it.
Identity and Union silently drop input features that have no geometry (continue in overlay). Near keeps them, and the docs say Identity keeps "every parcel". Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:890 with a suggestion.
The docs for Identity (docs/user-guide/analysis.md:177) overstate this, so they need to change whichever way the code goes. Confidence: medium.
Security
None found. The new code has no unwrap, expect, panic or indexing in non-test paths. ExtentIndex clamps its keys and checks saturating counts. Junk parameters for all four tools are covered by hostile_params_never_panic.
Performance
Near recomputes nearest_points for each winning pair, after closest already measured it. Confidence: medium, low impact. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1998.
part() converts the input geometry to Web Mercator again for every candidate overlay zone. Confidence: low.
Quality
fn near shadows itself with let near = input(inp, p, "near")? (tools.rs:1947). Renaming the local, e.g. near_ds, would make the body easier to read. Confidence: high, nit.
The overlay and Near helpers (ExtentIndex, Nearby, Located) replace duplicated Spatial Join code. The refactor is faithful: closest and all_within keep the old search order and tie-breaking. Confidence: high, positive.
AGENTS.md
This PR adds a ribbon control (Intersect in the Analyze gallery, ribbon.rs:1502). docs/contributing.md#ribbon-guidelines asks a ribbon PR to state the task, tab and group, what the control does on click, and a 1366 px screenshot. The PR body has none of these. Confidence: medium-high.
The other requirements look met: ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY are updated, the tool count of 24 in the docs is correct, the icon is drawn in code, no dependencies changed, and the layering holds.
Checked: the full diff, the overlay and Near semantics against generate.py and the reference cases, the Inputs identity used by same, Extent::intersects (inclusive), search_box and may_be_within termination, and rustfmt.toml (max_width 140, which the new lines fit). I could not build or run the tests in this environment, so compile and test status is unverified.

- Near's near layer is near_ds, not a local named like the function.
- Near gets an icon in the Tools pane, drawn in code; the guide counts
25 built-in tools.
- The overlay's masks share mask_of(); Near's shared point for a
polygon unions a multi-part feature and mask as the overlay does.
- From opengeos#982's review: an input feature no overlay polygon meets is
documented as copied unchanged, and a multi-part feature is unioned
only when an overlay polygon may meet it; the Identity icon's comment
reads better.

fn near shadowing itself: the local is now near_ds.
The ribbon checklist applied to feat(analysis): add an Intersect overlay tool #980's gallery entry, which has merged with those details in its description. Near adds no ribbon control: it is in the Tools pane (with its own icon now) and Feature Analysis.
The repeated nearest_points: answered in its thread.
Also here, #982's held follow-ups (an untouched input feature documented as copied unchanged; multi-part features unioned only when an overlay polygon may meet them) and the tool count, now 25. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass on this head.

Performance (medium confidence). The comment above this loop says large touching features aren't compared edge by edge, but the loop still visits every pair of edges whose x-ranges begin before la's end. Two large polygons that only touch along a border with E edges each therefore cost about E×E bounding-box tests, and edges re-sorts both lists on every call. The sort-and-break only prunes the tail, not the pairs inside the x-window. Either use a proper sweep with an active list, or correct the comment so it doesn't claim a bound that isn't there.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): The comment says each edge is only tried against edges whose boxes may meet it, and the loop does exactly that. It doesn't claim a bound on pairs inside the x-window. A proper sweep would be a larger change than this round.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low-medium confidence). For every input feature that intersects a near feature (d == 0) and has no shared vertex or point-on-polygon, this runs a full boolean overlay (part) and clones and re-unions the near feature's mask via mask_of(m.clone()), only to take the first coordinate of the result. Those costs repeat per input feature, so a multi-part near layer gets its parts unioned again each time. Worth caching the masks per near feature, or testing whether the overlap is non-empty before computing its full geometry.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Claude autofix (declined): Not changed now. This runs only for an input feature that already intersects a near feature and shares no vertex or point-on-polygon. Caching the masks would mean threading state through Nearby. Worth doing if a profile shows it.
I read the full diff and the surrounding code in tools.rs, join.rs, icons.rs and the ROADMAP. I found no correctness bugs or panics. The new non-test code has no unwrap, expect or indexing, and hostile_params_never_panic covers Near with junk values. The search loops terminate: search_box returns None once the box leaves the longitude range, and closest breaks when the limit is reached. I could not compile or run the tests (no shell here), so build and test status is unverified.

Performance
shared_point edge sweep (tools.rs:1972): the comment says large touching features aren't compared edge by edge, but the inner loop still tests every pair in the x-window, and both edge lists are re-sorted on each call. Confidence: medium.
shared_point overlap (tools.rs:1949): each intersecting pair runs a full boolean overlay, and mask_of(m.clone()) repeats the union on every call, just to take one coordinate. Confidence: low-medium.
Quality
Longitude wrap (tools.rs:2047): rem_euclid maps exactly 180° to -180°. Both are the same meridian, but the output may not match the input convention. Confidence: low.
Nits, not posted inline:
Locals named near shadow the near tool function in overlay and within.
std::collections::HashMap::new() is written out in full in two places; a use would read better.
AGENTS.md
The ROADMAP.md change matches the PR text: Near is in the Done section, and the solid-ground entry is removed.
Icons are drawn in code, and near is added to icons::ALL and tool_icon.
The tool count of 25 in analysis.md matches the 25 ToolSpec entries.
too_many_arguments is allowed workspace-wide, so the 8-argument within is fine.
Test gap: the new tests don't cover two touching polygons with no overlap, which is the edge-sweep path with a shared point. Adding one would exercise it.

A shared point of intersecting features came back as the input's own
longitude, so a point at 200 gave near_x 200, while the nearest-point
path gave -160 for the same meridian. Both paths now normalize to
[-180, 180), and the user guide says so.

Performance (confidence: medium). The comment at 1957 says each of a's edges is tried only against b's whose boxes may meet it, and the description says large touching features aren't compared edge by edge. The loop doesn't do that. Every la restarts at index 0 of eb and only breaks on the east side (min_x > x1). The edges west of la are still visited and skipped one by one, so the cost is about |ea|·|eb|/2 for large touching features. Near reaches this path for every feature that touches its nearest without a shared vertex or overlap. nearest_pair in join.rs has the same restart pattern, so this is not new in kind.
Either reword the comment to match the code, or keep a start index into eb that moves forward as la moves east (this needs a bound on edge width, since eb is sorted by west end, not by east end).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 063de66: the comment now says what the search prunes (it stops at the first edge of b that starts east of the current one, and skips pairs whose boxes don't meet) and that pairs inside that window are each tried, so two long touching borders cost about the product of their edges, once per output row. The PR description says the same now. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass on this head.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, confidence: high). The local near here shadows the new fn near (the Near tool) in the same file, and reads as if it were that tool in the loop below. Renaming it to something like meets (the zones the extent may meet) would make the overlay read more clearly.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test coverage (confidence: medium). This changes Identity and Union output for features no overlay polygon cuts: they are now copied as the original geometry, where before they went through dissolved. A multi-part feature with overlapping parts that misses every zone now comes out with those parts still overlapping. The docs describe this, but no new test pins it down. I'd add a regression case for a multi-part input feature that misses all zones (coordinates and part count unchanged for Identity and Union), and one for a feature whose extent meets a zone but whose geometry doesn't.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in 063de66: identity_and_union_copy_an_uncut_input_feature_unchanged checks a parcel of two overlapping squares far from the zone, and a triangle whose extent meets the zone's but whose shape doesn't, come out of both tools exactly as they went in, parts and coordinates. (Before this PR they were copied too: the no-hit path cloned the input; only the union of a feature that does meet a zone moved here.)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (nit, confidence: medium).closest has already measured this pair through ground_distance → distance_m → nearest_points. Calling nearest_points again here runs the whole nearest-pair search a second time for every input feature with a non-zero distance. Keeping the nearest pair with the distance in closest's result would avoid it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Same as the earlier thread on this: one more measurement per output row, against the many closest makes while searching, so I'm leaving it unless a profile says otherwise.
Bugs: None confirmed. I traced the Near search (grid widening, pruning, tie-breaking by layer order), the Spatial Join refactor into Nearby, the antimeridian normalisation, and the overlay changes. I found no crash path. unwrap and unsafe are not used in non-test code, and the new junk-parameter cases are covered by hostile_params_never_panic.
Security: None found. The new code only reads layer data and parameters.
Performance
shared_point edge scan (tools.rs ~1972, medium confidence): the comment and PR description say edges are swept by their west end, but each edge of a restarts at index 0 of eb and only breaks on the east side. For large touching features this is roughly |ea|·|eb|/2 comparisons. nearest_pair has the same restart pattern, so this predates the PR.
Repeated nearest-pair search (tools.rs ~2045, nit, medium confidence): nearest_points runs again for each non-zero-distance hit, after closest has already measured the same pair.
Quality
The overlay's local near (tools.rs ~922, nit, high confidence) shadows the new near Near-tool function, which reads ambiguously.
Long line in docs/user-guide/analysis.md near line 828: the "Distances are measured as…" sentence should be rewrapped.
Test coverage
The overlay behaviour change (tools.rs ~930, medium confidence): Identity and Union now copy features that no overlay polygon meets as-is, instead of passing them through dissolved. Multi-part features with overlapping parts that miss all zones now keep their overlaps. The docs describe this, but no test pins it. A regression case for each of the two situations would cover it.
AGENTS.md
Icons are drawn in code, the Tools pane and gallery lists are updated, the built-in count in the docs (25) matches the 25 ToolSpec entries, and the hostile-params test includes Near.
Interface messages use format! in the analysis crate. That matches the other tools in the file, which sit below the UI layer, so I did not flag it.
Confidence overall: the algorithm and the Spatial Join refactor look behaviour-preserving to me. I did not run the test suite or clippy here, so compile and test status is unverified.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base 4e5ea10 to PR head 5b783c1), the whole PR.
- Format the autofix commit's line, which the lint check refused.
- The shared-point edge search's comment says what it prunes and that
two long touching borders still cost about the product of their
edges, once per output row.
- The overlay's candidate zones are `meets`, not a local named like the
Near tool; a test pins that Identity and Union copy an input feature
no zone cuts unchanged, parts and coordinates.

Lint (medium confidence):within takes self plus seven parameters, eight in all. Clippy's too_many_arguments counts self and defaults to a limit of seven, so cargo xtask ci (clippy -D warnings) would likely fail here. The repo handles this elsewhere with #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)] (for example crates/render/src/mesh.rs). Either add that attribute or bundle the search options (nearest, exclude, measured) into a small struct. I could not run clippy in this review, so please confirm.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not a problem here: the workspace allows too_many_arguments (Cargo.toml, [workspace.lints.clippy], too_many_arguments = "allow"), and cargo xtask ci, with clippy -D warnings, passes on this branch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence):shared_point runs once per output row. For each intersecting input feature it clones the near feature's multipolygon, unions its parts (mask_of), and rebuilds its edge list and sort. The overlay tools precompute these masks once per zone (overlay_zones), so Near repeats that work for every input feature that meets the same multi-part near feature. On a large layer, a per-feature cache of the near features' masks (for example a lazily filled HashMap<usize, MultiPolygon> keyed by near row, shared across rows) would avoid that. Not a correctness problem.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
As in the earlier threads on shared_point: it runs once per output row whose nearest feature intersects it, for that one feature, so the clone and union are per such row, not per candidate. Leaving it unless a profile says otherwise.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: this paragraph's wrapping is uneven. This line runs well past the roughly 100-column wrap of the lines around it, and the "longitude from −180°…" clause starts mid-line. Rewrap the Near paragraph to match the rest of the section.
I found no correctness bugs in the Near tool, the Spatial Join refactor, or the overlay change. I could not compile or run clippy or rustfmt here, so the lint and format points below are unverified.
Bugs
None found. I traced the nearest-feature search, the tie-break, the same-layer exclusion, the antimeridian handling and the termination of the widening loop. Junk parameters are handled by get/num, and the search loop always terminates. (confidence: high)
Security
None found. The new code reads layer data and numeric parameters only. (confidence: high)
Performance
shared_point runs once per output row. For each intersecting input feature it clones and unions the near feature's parts and rebuilds its edge list. The overlay tools precompute these masks once per zone, so this repeats work for multi-part near features. (confidence: medium)
Quality
Overlay change: the output for an input feature no zone meets was already the unchanged geometry. The change only skips the dissolved call, so the docs wording is accurate but the behaviour is not new. (confidence: high)

Lint: Nearby::within takes eight parameters counting self, which likely trips clippy's too_many_arguments under -D warnings (repo convention is #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)]). (confidence: medium)

Do not use clamped Mercator intersections for ground distance.
to_geo converts coordinates with lonlat_to_merc, which clamps latitudes above MAX_LAT. on_earth allows latitudes through ±90°, so inputs at 86°–87° reach this path.
For an input at (0, 86) and near features at (0, 87) and (0, 86.1), the projected points coincide. ground_distance reports zero for the first candidate, tightens the search bound to zero, and can exclude the actual nearest feature. Near then uses shared_point, which can return (0, 86) even though that point is not on the selected feature.
Use an intersection test that preserves polar coordinates. Do not rely on on_earth to reject these inputs. The same raw Mercator intersection is unsafe for polygon rings that use wrapped longitudes across the antimeridian.

Likely clippy -D warnings failure (too_many_arguments).within takes &self plus seven arguments, which is eight inputs. The default clippy threshold is seven, so this trips the lint. The repo already silences this lint on similar helpers (mapview.rs, panes.rs). Confidence about 75%, since I could not run clippy here.

Performance: the overlap mask is rebuilt for every output row.mask_of(m.clone()) unions all parts of the near feature each time shared_point runs. edges() also sorts both feature edge lists each time. Spatial Join caches its geometry once per join feature, but this path does not. For polygon inputs against a multi-part near layer, many intersecting input rows will repeat that union for the same near feature. Confidence about 50%. Consider building the mask once per near feature, lazily, and reusing it across rows. It is not a small change, so I have not offered a suggestion.

Nit: the nearest pair is computed twice.closest has already measured this distance through distance_m, which runs nearest_points. Calling nearest_points again here repeats the geodesic plane search for each output row. The result is correct, so this is only a cost. Returning the point alongside the distance from within would avoid the second pass. Confidence high that the work repeats, low that it matters in practice.
No correctness bugs found. I checked coordinate spaces (to_multipolygon converts to Web Mercator, so dissolved, part and mask_of agree in shared_point), the widening search and its termination, tie-breaking by layer order, the antimeridian re-wrap, the Spatial Join refactor into Nearby (same results as before), and the overlay's no-hit copy path. Confidence: medium-high.
Security
None found. The new code takes no file paths, and the parameters are checked with get()/filter. Confidence: high.
Performance
shared_point rebuilds the overlap mask on every output row (mask_of(m.clone()) unions the near feature's parts each time, and edges() sorts both edge lists). For polygon inputs against a multi-part near layer, this repeats work for the same near feature. Confidence: about 50%.
near computes the nearest pair twice per row: closest measures it, then nearest_points runs again for the point. The result is correct; this is a cost only. Confidence: high that the work repeats, low that it matters.
Quality
Nearby::within takes &self plus seven arguments, which is eight inputs. That exceeds clippy's default threshold of seven, so cargo xtask ci with -D warnings will likely fail. The repo already allows this lint on similar helpers. Confidence: about 75% (I could not run clippy).
Nit: a Search Distance such as 1e308 km overflows to infinity in to_metres and is accepted as a limit. The search still terminates, but buffer rejects oversized distances, so near could do the same. Confidence: low.

No unwrap/expect/panic/unsafe in non-test code. The icon is drawn in code. The hostile-parameter test covers Near. The docs, roadmap, parity file and tool count (25) match the diff. No new dependencies. I did not check ui_shot screenshots or the ribbon, since the PR does not touch the ribbon. Confidence: high.

Compared with main (merge base 4e5ea10 to PR head 5a61c82), the whole PR.
@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding at tools.rs:1699 (clamped Web Mercator in ground_distance above 85.05°):
You're right about the mechanism: ground_distance tests intersection on to_geo's Web Mercator geometries, where latitudes beyond ±85.05° clamp, so two features in that band can test as touching and get distance 0. But this isn't new in this PR: ground_distance is Spatial Join's, unchanged since #864 (Closest and Within a distance), and this PR only moved the search that calls it into Nearby so Near shares it. Clip, Erase and the overlay tools work in the same plane by design, as the user guide says.
A proper fix (an intersection test that holds at the poles and across the antimeridian, for Spatial Join and Near together) is its own change, not part of adding Near, so I'm leaving it out of this PR. It has the same root cause as #1033 (the tools' Web Mercator conversion clamps latitudes beyond ±85.05°), which is where it belongs: Closest, Within a distance and Near would be fixed with it.
The other finding, a point at 180° and one at −180°, is fixed in the next push: Near falls back to the nearest points' pair when no shared point is found in the plane, with a test that fails without it.
@Mavrick-F Understood. I accept deferring the polar intersection defect to a shared Spatial Join and Near follow-up. The defect remains valid, but I will not insist on fixing it in #984.
The inspected ground_distance still uses the planar intersection shortcut. I have not independently verified its history back to #864.
The inspected Near code does not yet contain the antimeridian fallback, which matches your “next push” note. That finding remains pending until the fallback and regression test are available for review.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the shared polar and antimeridian intersection fix?
@Mavrick-F Understood. I accept deferring the shared polar intersection defect to #1033 rather than expanding #984. The defect remains valid; this is a scope decision, not a withdrawal.
In crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, Line 1699 still uses the planar intersection shortcut. Line 2048 does not yet include the antimeridian fallback, which matches your “next push” note. That finding remains pending review of the fallback and regression test.
Since you identified #1033 as the follow-up, there is no need to open a duplicate issue.
Two features that touch at a place written 180° on one side and -180°
on the other are 0 m apart, but their Web Mercator forms don't meet,
so shared_point found nothing and Near wrote empty coordinates. Near
now falls back to the nearest points' pair whenever no shared point is
found.

Possible wrong nearest result for features past ±180°.on_earth admits longitudes up to ±540° (shapes across the antimeridian), but the grid lookup only matches a feature's stored extent. With more than 16 near features, a feature stored at 170°–190° is not in the grid cells for an input at −175°, so within never looks at it. If another feature is found at a larger distance first, closest returns that one, and the 0 m match is missed. search_box only falls back to a full scan when the query box leaves ±180°, so the query side is safe and the feature side is not. Suggested fix: keep the indices of features whose extent leaves [−180°, 180°] in a list and add them to looked on every call. The same index is used by Spatial Join's Closest, so that tool has the same gap. Confidence: medium (about 65%); I traced the index logic but did not run a test.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Plausible, and not new here: this is the extent index and search Spatial Join's Closest has used since #864; this PR moved them, unchanged, into Nearby so Near shares them. Fixing only the lookup wouldn't be enough, either. Once a feature stored at 170°–190° is looked at, the intersection test before measuring runs on Web Mercator coordinates that aren't folded (#940), so a point inside it at −175° would measure to its boundary rather than 0. Both pieces come from coordinates outside ±180°, which #940 and #1033 track across the tools, so I'm leaving it out of this PR rather than patching Near and Spatial Join's search halfway.

Likely clippy::too_many_arguments failure.within takes 8 parameters counting self, and the lint's default limit is 7. cargo xtask ci runs clippy with -D warnings, so this would fail CI. The repo handles this lint with #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)] in several places, but bundling the target (t, t_ext, t_geo) into one small struct would be cleaner. Confidence: about 70%, from the lint's default threshold; I did not run clippy.

Performance: per-row rebuild of masks and edges.shared_point runs once per output row, for the nearest feature. Each call clones and orients the near polygon (mask_of(m.clone()), and a union when it has several parts), and rebuilds and sorts every edge of both features (edges). A layer of 100k lines touching a country polygon with 100k vertices would therefore do about 10^10 work. The overlay caches its masks once in Zone. Suggested fix: precompute each near feature's mask and sorted edges once, in Located or a lazily filled cache, and reuse them here. Confidence: medium (about 60%) that this matters in practice; the code path is correct.
Near features whose coordinates run past ±180° can be missed by the grid lookup, so near may return a farther feature when a 0 m match exists. The same index is used by Spatial Join's Closest, so that tool has the same gap. Confidence: medium (about 65%). Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1861.
Security
None found. The new code does no file or network I/O, and the parameters go through the existing num, to_metres and out_name helpers.
Performance
shared_point rebuilds each near feature's mask and sorted edges for every output row that intersects. On large layers this can be very slow. Confidence: medium (about 60%). Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1950.
near calls nearest_points again for the winning feature, after the distance search has already found the same pair. This is a minor duplicate cost per row. Confidence: high, low impact.
Quality
Nearby::within takes 8 parameters counting self, over clippy's default limit of 7, so cargo xtask ci may fail. Confidence: about 70%. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1850.
The new test identity_and_union_copy_an_uncut_input_feature_unchanged would also pass on the old code. The overlay change only avoids a dissolve and does not alter output, so the test locks in existing behaviour rather than guarding the change.
AGENTS.md
Compliant as far as I can see. No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. Tool labels are plain literals, as with the other ToolSpecs, and tl! is not used there. The tool count (25) in docs/user-guide/analysis.md matches the TOOLS list. The icon is drawn in code, and near is in icons::ALL, tool_icon and the feature gallery.
I did not compile or run the tests. Findings are from reading the diff and the surrounding source.

Summary
Adds Near (
near), the last tool of #959. For each input feature it adds the nearest feature of another layer:near_fid: its OID, as the attribute table shows it;near_dist: the ground distance to it, inunits(Kilometers by default, as Spatial Join);near_x,near_y: the point on it nearest the input feature, in lon/lat. Where they intersect, a point they share.Parameters:
input, near, optionaldistance(features with nothing that near get empty values) andunits, output. Selections in both layers are honoured. Ties go to the first feature in the near layer's order. With one layer as both, a feature's nearest is another feature, not itself.Distances are Spatial Join's Closest distances: Spatial Join's search is moved, unchanged, into a
Nearbyhelper that both tools use. It looks features up through the grid index, widens the search from one cell until it finds a feature, and measures on the WGS 84 ellipsoid between the nearest points.join::nearest_pointsnow returns that pair, anddistance_mmeasures it. The point is found as the distance is, in a plane centred between the features, so on a long edge it can be off the geodesic by up to about 0.01 % of the distance (documented). Longitudes are brought back within ±180°.For intersecting features, the shared point is one of a point layer's points on the other feature, else a point of the polygon overlap (by the overlay), else a point where their edges meet. Edges are sorted by their west end, so each edge is tried only against the other feature's edges that start before it ends and whose boxes meet it; two long borders that only touch still cost about the product of their edges, once per output row.
Also here, small follow-ups to #982 that would have reset its approval: an input feature that no overlay polygon meets is documented as copied unchanged, a multi-part feature is unioned only when an overlay polygon may meet it, and the overlay's masks share one helper (
mask_of), which Near's shared-point search now uses too. Near gets an icon in the Tools pane, drawn in code. This completes the roadmap item (removed from Solid ground; Near is listed under Done) and ticks the GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md entry.
