feat(analysis): add Identity and Union overlay tools - #982
Adds Identity (identity) and Union (union), the second step of #959, on top of Intersect (#980, merged).
Identity (input, overlay, output): each input feature gives its Intersect parts, then its part outside every overlay polygon, with empty overlay attributes. Every parcel is in the result, in or out of the floodplain. Input can be points, lines or polygons.
Union (same parameters, polygons on both sides): Identity's features, then each overlay polygon's part outside every input polygon, with empty input attributes. Together they cover everything either layer covers.
Input features without geometry: Identity and Union keep them, with empty overlay attributes (Intersect leaves them out, as Clip does).
An overlay feature of several overlapping parts is unioned before the overlay, as Clip's mask is. Without that, Intersect (already merged) and these tools lost the overlap's area: two squares x 0–2 and 1–3 in one feature came out as x 0–1 and 2–3. A single polygon is only oriented, so a point exactly on its edge stays on it (the GEOS corpus checks that case).
Same rules as Intersect: fields of both layers with name_2 for a taken name, an edge counts as inside, selections in both layers, the input's CRS kept. Where overlay polygons overlap each other, an input feature's part in both comes out once for each (documented; [Feature]: Intersect, Identity, Union and Near tools #959's wording is corrected).
The three tools are now one function, overlay(inputs, params, Overlay::{Intersect, Identity, Union}). Clip's helper becomes part(g, mask, inside), which also gives the part outside a mask: a polygon's difference, a line's stretches outside (geo's inverted clip), the points not in it. Erase is unchanged.
Both join the Feature Analysis list and the Tools pane (Analysis › Overlay), with icons drawn in code; only Intersect is in the Analyze gallery. The user guide, ROADMAP.md (only Near is left), GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md, README, the comparison page and the assistant's skill are updated.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passes, and the wasm build of rustgis-web succeeds.
GEOS reference corpus: identity of polygons, lines and points, and union, against the zones: holes, a multipart parcel, overlapping zones, a zone entirely in a parcel's hole, and a road along a zone's edge, which GEOS keeps once, inside.
Unit tests: an overlay feature of overlapping parts gives its whole outline once (fails without the union: the overlap goes missing); Identity and Union keep a feature without geometry and Intersect doesn't; Identity keeps an uncut feature whole and a point outside every polygon; Union adds the uncovered overlay, keeps overlapping overlay remainders, and refuses a non-polygon input; selections in either layer change what cuts and what covers.
Related issue
Part of #959. Intersect landed in #980; Near follows in #984.
Added Identity geoprocessing, which returns intersecting portions of input features plus portions outside overlay areas. Input features without geometry are retained.
Added Union for polygon layers, including overlay portions outside the input polygons.
Identity and Union are available in the tool gallery with dedicated icons and are documented in the analysis guide.
When overlay polygons overlap, Identity and Union produce an input feature’s shared portion once for each overlapping polygon.
Intersect splits input features (points, lines or polygons) by the
polygons of an overlay layer: one feature per part inside an overlay
polygon, with the input's attributes followed by the overlay's (a taken
name gets a suffix). An overlay edge counts as inside, as for Clip.
Selections in both layers are honoured.
Clip's per-geometry logic becomes part_in, shared with Intersect, and
Spatial Join's extent grid becomes ExtentIndex, so Intersect prunes
candidates the same way. The GEOS reference corpus gains intersect
cases, a road along a zone's edge, and keys of several fields.
Part of opengeos#959.

Identity keeps every part of the input: each feature's parts in the
overlay polygons, with both layers' attributes, then its part outside
them all. Union, for two polygon layers, also adds each overlay
polygon's part outside every input polygon. Both follow Intersect's
rules for fields, edges and selections.
Intersect, Identity and Union are now one overlay function, and Clip's
helper becomes part(g, mask, inside), which also gives the part
outside a mask. GEOS reference cases cover identity of polygons, lines
and points, and union.
Part of opengeos#959.

Identity and Union silently drop input features that have no geometry. The docs and the PR text say Identity keeps every input feature ("Every parcel is then in the result"), but this continue removes a feature with geometry: None from the output entirely. Clip and Erase do the same, so this is consistent, but it contradicts Identity's stated guarantee. Confidence: medium. Either keep such rows in the output with empty geometry for Identity and Union, or say in docs/user-guide/analysis.md that features without geometry are left out.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6708f9e: Identity and Union now keep an input feature without geometry, with its attributes and empty overlay attributes (Intersect still leaves it out, as Clip does). The guide says so. New test identity_and_union_keep_input_features_without_geometry. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass on this head.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low):part(g, &z.poly, true) reprojects the input feature to Web Mercator (to_multipolygon) once per candidate zone, and the rest step reprojects it again. For a parcel that touches k zones, that is k+2 conversions. The input could be projected once per feature and the projected polygon passed in. Boolean operations still dominate, so the gain is modest. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Leaving this as is, as on #980: projecting is one pass over the vertices, and each zone's boolean operation on the same vertices costs more, so converting once per feature saves a small share of the work, at the price of a second set of entry points beside part. Worth doing if a profile of a dense overlay says so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The tool count is wrong.crates/analysis/src/tools.rs has 24 ToolSpec entries in TOOLS, not 23. The table below also lacks a row for Zonal Statistics (zonalStats, Analysis › Raster), which was already missing before this PR. Consider changing the count to 24 and adding the row:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Icon consistency (nit):intersect gets its own icon here, but identity and union are not mapped, so they fall through to the generic "tools" icon at the end of this match. The ribbon guidelines ask for one icon per command wherever it appears, so either add Identity and Union icons or say why the generic one is intended. Confidence: medium.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6708f9e: Identity and Union have their own icons, drawn in code beside Intersect's (Identity: the input square kept whole, the overlap marked; Union: both squares kept).
I read the whole diff, the new overlay, part and ExtentIndex code in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, and the test and generator changes. I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so the claims that cargo xtask ci and the reference corpus pass are unverified. I checked the logic by reading. The clip refactor keeps its old behaviour, and the spatial_join move to ExtentIndex preserves the old grid behaviour.
Bugs
Identity and Union drop input features that have no geometry.overlay does let Some(g) = &f.geometry else { continue }, but the docs say Identity keeps every input feature. Confidence: medium. (Inline comment posted.)
Security
None found. The change does no I/O and adds no new input paths beyond the existing hostile-parameter test cases.
Performance
part reprojects the input feature once per candidate zone, plus twice more for the rest step. Project once per feature. Boolean ops dominate, so the gain is modest. Confidence: medium. (Inline comment posted.)
union_all re-orients polygons that are already oriented, which clones each zone on every call. Minor. Confidence: low.
Quality
Docs say 23 built-in tools, but TOOLS has 24 entries. The table also omits Zonal Statistics (zonalStats), which was already missing before this PR. Confidence: high. (Inline comment posted.)
Identity and Union fall back to the generic "tools" icon in tool_icon, while Intersect got its own. Nit. Confidence: medium. (Inline comment posted on the intersect line, because the fallback line is outside the diff.)
Clip and Erase do not keep the input CRS, but the new overlay tools do (out.crs = ds.crs). Inconsistent across the overlay family. Confidence: low, since the impact depends on how export treats an unset CRS.
Test helper change in reference.rs. For ids expectations, rows with a missing key field now produce "", where they used to be skipped, and key: null now yields "all". This is test-only, and existing cases probably still pass. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or indexing in the new non-test code. Indexing goes through get, and the ribbon and layering rules are not broken. Checked, no finding.
Ribbon PR statement. The PR body says only Intersect joins the Analyze gallery, but it gives no placement rationale against the ribbon guidelines (tab purpose, one button per destination). Confidence: low to medium.
Translation. New messages use format!, as the neighbouring tools do. Analysis messages are not in the UI translation path, so I did not flag this.

- An overlay feature of several overlapping parts is unioned before the
overlay, as Clip's mask is: Intersect, Identity and Union lost the
overlap's area (x 1-2 of two squares 0-2 and 1-3 came out as two
pieces). A single polygon is only oriented, so a point exactly on its
edge stays on it.
- Identity and Union keep input features without geometry, with empty
overlay attributes, as Near will; Intersect still leaves them out.
- Identity and Union get icons in the Tools pane, drawn in code.
- The user guide counts 24 built-in tools.

Thanks for the review. With #980 merged, this branch now has main merged in, and 6708f9e holds the follow-ups:
Features without geometry: Identity and Union keep them (inline thread).
The tool count (24) and Identity's and Union's icons (inline threads).
One more fix, from the review of feat(analysis): add an Intersect overlay tool #980: an overlay feature whose parts overlap is unioned before the overlay, as Clip's mask is. Without it the overlap's area went missing (two squares x 0–2 and 1–3 in one feature came out as x 0–1 and 2–3). A test checks it, and fails without the fix.
union_all re-orienting already-oriented zones: it now runs only for a zone of several parts, so a single polygon isn't cloned or touched.
The overlay tools keep the input's CRS while Clip and Erase don't: deliberate here, as Spatial Join does it (fix(analysis): join layers with different source CRSs #854), so an export of the result goes back to the source CRS. Bringing Clip and Erase in line is a separate change.
The per-zone reprojection is answered in its thread. cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass on this head.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, high confidence): the if op == Overlay::Union guard in the allocation isn't needed. Vec::new() doesn't allocate, so sizing covering to zones.len() for every overlay is free, and the guard on the push (line 901) already keeps Intersect and Identity from filling it.
Suggested change
letmut covering:Vec<Vec<MultiPolygon<f64>>> = vec![Vec::new();if op == Overlay::Union{zones.len()} else {0}];
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Taken in 7622e77: covering is sized to the zones for every overlay, and the zones' remainders are computed under one if op == Overlay::Union, which keeps Intersect and Identity from emitting them.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (medium confidence): each hit zone gets its own full clone of the input polygon, and to_multipolygon(g) re-converts geometry that part already converted. For a large parcel layer where each parcel hits several zones, this duplicates the geometry in memory. Store the input's row index once per feature (e.g. a Vec<MultiPolygon<f64>> of the input's polygons, indexed by row, or just the row numbers) and have covering hold indices into it. Nothing is wrong with the output; this is a memory and time cost that grows with hits.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 7622e77: covering holds the rows of the input polygons that cover each zone, and the polygons are converted once, when the zone's remainder is computed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bugs, low confidence (about 25%), a question rather than a confirmed defect: the subject polygon m is not oriented, though the doc comment above says the polygons are "oriented as union_all leaves them". union_all orients its inputs because the overlay infers the fill rule from the first ring's winding, and the comment there notes that input files mix orientations. Intersect and Clip already pass the raw subject here, so this predates the PR. Identity and Union now also rely on m.difference(mask) for the outside part, so an input with mixed winding could produce a wrong remainder. Worth a check against an input whose exterior is clockwise. If it does matter, orient the subject (m.orient(Direction::Default)) here. If it doesn't, correct the doc comment.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Checked: winding doesn't matter for the subject. The GEOS reference corpus has a clockwise parcel (P2), and Identity's and Union's cases, P2's remainder included, match GEOS. The doc comment on part() now says which polygons must be oriented (the mask's) and that the feature's may wind either way (7622e77). The real problem nearby was overlapping parts, which CodeRabbit raised; that's fixed in the same commit.
I found no correctness defects in the Identity and Union logic. Three inline comments are posted in crates/analysis/src/tools.rs. I could not run the tests, since this review has no shell. The conclusions rest on reading the code. I checked the edge rule (Extent::intersects is inclusive, and points on an edge count as inside), the id uniqueness (identity and union collide with no other tool), that the hostile-params test iterates TOOLS, that the doc's tool count of 24 matches the table, and that the rustfmt width of 140 is respected.
Bugs
Low confidence (about 25%): the subject polygon in part is not oriented, although the doc comment says it is. Intersect and Clip already do this, so it predates the PR. Identity and Union now also depend on difference for the outside part. Line 725.
Security
None found. The new parameters go through the existing rows, input and out_name helpers.
Performance
Medium confidence: covering clones each input polygon once per hit zone, and re-converts geometry that part already converted. Memory grows with the number of hits. Line 906.
Quality
High confidence, nit: the if op == Overlay::Union guard on the covering allocation is unnecessary, because Vec::new() does not allocate. A one-line suggestion is posted at line 871.
AGENTS.md
Compliant as far as I checked. No unwrap or panic is added to non-test code, the hostile-params coverage applies to the new tools, and layering is unchanged. The new labels and messages are untranslated, which matches the analysis crate, since it has no tl! or i18n uses at all.

An input feature of several overlapping polygons went into the overlay
as it was, and geo's even-odd fill dropped the overlap: Identity's
part outside a zone over one edge of two squares (x 0-2 and 1-3) lost
x 1-2. part() now unions a feature of several polygons first, as the
overlay zones are; a single polygon is passed as it is, in either
winding.
Union's zones keep the rows of the input polygons that cover them, not
a copy of each polygon per zone.

Performance (medium confidence):part(g, &z.poly, true) is called once per candidate zone with the raw input geometry. For a multi-part input feature, part runs union_all over its parts again on every call, so a parcel with several parts is unioned once per zone it meets. Its parts can be unioned once per input feature, before this loop, instead. Behaviour is unchanged, and it avoids repeated unions on large layers with many zones.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Docs (medium confidence): This only covers overlaps in the input part. Union also adds each overlay polygon's remainder outside the inputs, and overlay polygons that overlap each other each keep their own remainder (the |Z1/|Z2 test case shows z2 whole, overlapping z1). That overlap comes out twice in Union, and the paragraph doesn't say so. Suggest stating it for Union too.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 28164b8: the guide now says Union adds each overlay polygon's own remainder, so where overlay polygons overlap each other, that overlap outside the input comes out once for each too.
I read the diff and the surrounding tools.rs logic, and I did not build or run the tests (no shell access here). The core logic holds up on reading: the shared part() helper, zone unioning, the Union remainder pass, selection handling, and the non-panicking get() style all check out. The findings below are minor.
Bugs
None found with reasonable confidence.
Security
None found. The new output names go through the existing out_name, and the new code adds no unchecked indexing or unwraps outside tests.
Performance
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:890: a multi-part input feature is re-unioned on every candidate zone, because part() unions its parts on each call. Hoisting that union out of the zone loop would avoid the repeated work. Confidence: medium.
Quality
The part() doc comment says the feature is "oriented as union_all leaves them", but a single-polygon feature is not oriented there. The wording is only clear about the mask. Confidence: medium-low.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Icons are drawn in code, no new dependencies, no new assets, the new tools are in the gallery and tool-icon mapping, and the tests that run every tool with junk parameters cover the new tools automatically.
Docs
docs/user-guide/analysis.md:183: the overlap note covers only the input side. Union's remainder can also count an area twice where overlay polygons overlap each other, and the text doesn't say so. Confidence: medium.

- A feature of several polygons is unioned once, by dissolved(), for
all the zones it meets, not again in part() for each one.
- Identity's part outside one zone is cut with that zone itself, the
mask its inside part was cut with, not a union of it, which moves its
edges by a rounding error. A road along a zone's edge comes out once,
inside (new test).
- part()'s doc says which polygons must be oriented (the mask's) and
that the feature's must not overlap; the guide says Union's remainders
of overlapping overlay polygons each keep their overlap.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Inconsistent output for overlapping parts (Identity/Union), medium confidence. When an input feature with overlapping parts hits a zone, its rest is taken from the dissolved whole, so the overlap appears once. When it hits no zone, g.clone() keeps the raw overlapping parts, so the same feature's area is double-counted in the output depending on whether it touches an overlay polygon. The whole is already computed here, so using it in this branch is cheap and makes both paths agree. Single-part features are unchanged (Cow::Borrowed clones the same geometry).
Suggested change
Some(g.clone())
Some(whole.into_owned())
If keeping raw geometry for untouched features is intended, the doc comment on overlay and analysis.md should say so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Intended, so leaving the code as is: an input feature that no overlay polygon meets is copied as it is, coordinates untouched, as Clip and Erase copy what they don't cut. A feature that is cut is necessarily rebuilt by the overlay, and rebuilding means its overlapping parts are unioned. Unioning an untouched feature would move its vertices by a rounding error (the union goes through Web Mercator and back) to change nothing a user asked for. A layer of self-overlapping features is the input's own problem, which a check/fix-geometry tool (on the roadmap) is the place to report.
I've written that down for the overlay's doc comment and the guide, together with your lazy-union point (unioning only when a zone is a candidate) and the icon comment; that small change goes in with the next PR in this series (#984) rather than resetting this one's approval.
Identity/Union: an input feature with overlapping parts is unioned when it touches an overlay polygon, but kept with its raw overlapping parts when it touches none. The same feature's area is then double-counted or not depending on whether it touches a zone. Posted inline at crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:910 with a one-line suggestion. Confidence: medium (about 55%).
Security
None found. The new code is pure geometry over existing parameter parsing, with no new I/O, parsing, or commands.
Performance
dissolved(g) runs a union for every multi-part input feature before checking whether any zone is a candidate, so features with no overlay nearby still pay for it. Computing it lazily would avoid that. Confidence: low (about 35%).
The no-hit path clones each untouched input geometry (g.clone()). Using a Cow would avoid it. Minor.
Quality
The part/dissolved/overlay refactor reads clearly, and the doc comments match the code. The Overlay enum keeps the three tools in one function as intended.
The icons.rs comment for identity ("the input's square all kept: its part outside lighter") is hard to parse. Consider rewording.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe in the new non-test code.
New tools are in TOOLS, so the analysis hostile-parameter test covers them automatically.
Icons are drawn in code, so no ATTRIBUTION.md row is needed. No dependencies changed.
Layering holds: the change is in L2 and touches no egui code below L6.
The tool count in docs/user-guide/analysis.md (24) matches the 24 ToolSpec entries.
The ToolSpec strings are literals, as the existing tools' are, so no new i18n gap.
Not verified: I had no shell here, so I did not compile or run the tests or generate.py. The Rust reads as type-correct on inspection, but cargo xtask ci is the real check.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b07f232 to PR head 28164b8).
- Near's near layer is near_ds, not a local named like the function.
- Near gets an icon in the Tools pane, drawn in code; the guide counts
25 built-in tools.
- The overlay's masks share mask_of(); Near's shared point for a
polygon unions a multi-part feature and mask as the overlay does.
- From opengeos#982's review: an input feature no overlay polygon meets is
documented as copied unchanged, and a multi-part feature is unioned
only when an overlay polygon may meet it; the Identity icon's comment
reads better.

name gets a suffix).
Part of #959.

* feat(analysis): add Identity and Union overlay tools
Identity keeps every part of the input: each feature's parts in the
overlay polygons, with both layers' attributes, then its part outside
them all. Union, for two polygon layers, also adds each overlay
polygon's part outside every input polygon. Both follow Intersect's
rules for fields, edges and selections.
Intersect, Identity and Union are now one overlay function, and Clip's
helper becomes part(g, mask, inside), which also gives the part
outside a mask. GEOS reference cases cover identity of polygons, lines
and points, and union.
Part of #959.

* feat(analysis): add a Near tool
Near copies the input and adds, for each feature, the nearest feature
of another layer: its OID, the ground distance to it in the chosen
units, and the point on it nearest the input feature (a point they
share when they intersect), within an optional search distance. With
one layer as both, a feature's nearest is another feature.
Spatial Join's Closest search moves, unchanged, into Nearby, which both
tools use, and join::nearest_points returns the pair distance_m
measures. Longitudes of the point are brought back within ±180°.
Closes#959.

* fix(analysis): Near review follow-ups, and #982's held ones
- Near's near layer is near_ds, not a local named like the function.
- Near gets an icon in the Tools pane, drawn in code; the guide counts
25 built-in tools.
- The overlay's masks share mask_of(); Near's shared point for a
polygon unions a multi-part feature and mask as the overlay does.
- From #982's review: an input feature no overlay polygon meets is
documented as copied unchanged, and a multi-part feature is unioned
only when an overlay polygon may meet it; the Identity icon's comment
reads better.

* fix(analysis): Near gives every point longitude in -180 to 180
A shared point of intersecting features came back as the input's own
longitude, so a point at 200 gave near_x 200, while the nearest-point
path gave -160 for the same meridian. Both paths now normalize to
[-180, 180), and the user guide says so.

Applied by the claude-autofix workflow.
* fix(analysis): format Near's point wrap; say what the edge sweep prunes
- Format the autofix commit's line, which the lint check refused.
- The shared-point edge search's comment says what it prunes and that
two long touching borders still cost about the product of their
edges, once per output row.
- The overlay's candidate zones are `meets`, not a local named like the
Near tool; a test pins that Identity and Union copy an input feature
no zone cuts unchanged, parts and coordinates.

* docs(analysis): rewrap the Near paragraph
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(analysis): Near gives a point where no shared one is found
Two features that touch at a place written 180° on one side and -180°
on the other are 0 m apart, but their Web Mercator forms don't meet,
so shared_point found nothing and Near wrote empty coordinates. Near
now falls back to the nearest points' pair whenever no shared point is
found.

Summary
Adds Identity (
identity) and Union (union), the second step of #959, on top of Intersect (#980, merged).input, overlay, output): each input feature gives its Intersect parts, then its part outside every overlay polygon, with empty overlay attributes. Every parcel is in the result, in or out of the floodplain. Input can be points, lines or polygons.name_2for a taken name, an edge counts as inside, selections in both layers, the input's CRS kept. Where overlay polygons overlap each other, an input feature's part in both comes out once for each (documented; [Feature]: Intersect, Identity, Union and Near tools #959's wording is corrected). The three tools are now one function,
overlay(inputs, params, Overlay::{Intersect, Identity, Union}). Clip's helper becomespart(g, mask, inside), which also gives the part outside a mask: a polygon's difference, a line's stretches outside (geo's inverted clip), the points not in it.
