Blast radius first: every multi-def single-pick answer, ALL languages, may change — --around/--lego/--edit-check and the --lsp definition/hover/workspace-symbol lanes. Each flip class is pinned by a byte-asserted test/lspcheck.sh arm (18/18b/19/20/21/23); the map output itself is byte-identical to the base binary on this repo (query-time-only ordering — buildGraph's edge candidates untouched, kParserVer stays, caches valid; the edge-vs-display gap is disclosed on the row, arm (23)).

Before/after on the hand fixture (def name + attr + schema column + YAML key; real bytes):

surface before after
--around=name focus <s t="var" n="name" sc="AllFour"> <s t="method" n="name" sc="AllFour">
workspace/symbol "name" row 1 attr all_four.rb:8 def all_four.rb:10; schema column before the YAML section
--lsp definition front lowest-id arbitrary tower front; multi-def answers carry one window/logMessage disclosure ahead of the list
hover on a split name silent pick N definitions for name — counts are floors; the resolver splits over them.

Pieces: C1 hoist the dedup ladder → shared kindSpecificity (model.h, then §3 table + reorder anchors); C2 applyNameTower total order on both resolvers' name tiers (tiers preserved, tower orders within); C3 resolveFocus keeps front(), every stale "lowest-id" sentence corrected (incl. the emitted legends + MCP descriptions); C4 the one disclosure sentence. Red-first per the campaign DoD — arms committed RED-on-base first (7e4c8424). Part of the RIPWIRE-RUBY campaign (prior landings: A2 #339, mixin seam #412); task C itself is a private campaign task with no tracked issue.

Verification: lspcheck 25 arms ALL PASS (floor + new, red→green proven at each commit); determinism ×2; xmllint; map byte-identical vs the base binary built from b59b0824 (parity re-proven in-container); targeted batteries 13/13 + 18/18 in leap-build (graph.h/legend/MCP families — full suite left to CI per CONTRIBUTING §1); ASan+LSAN clean at the C4 head (0 findings), re-armed by connectcorecheck's sanitizer arm at iteration 2; --quality-delta=origin/main..HEAD: regressions=0 gating=0 (3 acked shape rows carry their reasons). Five changes-max review-fix iterations ran post-implementation: 30 findings fixed, every test-strengthening commit shipped with a red-control proof; the final commits are prose/gate-class. Zed in-editor check per docs/LSP.md D2: pending with the maintainer (protocol-level proofs are arm-pinned).

Attribution note: the per-commit trailers carry the campaign's standard AI-assistance line from the task handoff template; the model assistance on THIS pull request specifically was Qwen 3.8 Flash only, under @mpapis's supervision — no DeepSeek pass.

…arity

Gate-first commit for RIPWIRE-RUBY task C. Five new arms on the copied
rubyschemafix collision tree: (18) byte-pinned picker order — Method def
before Var before schema column before yaml section on workspace/symbol,
definition front and hover front; (19) the ONE multi-def disclosure
sentence in the hover markdown plus one window/logMessage ahead of each
definition answer, absent on single-def names; (20) hover Used-at parity
with every CLI --uses call row; (21) C/C++ decl/def refinement composes
with the tower sort; (22) determinism x2 on the new dialog.

On b59b082: (18) and both (19) assertions FAIL (attr leads, no
disclosure), (20)(21)(22) PASS (parity pins existing behavior; (21) is
the no-regression floor), (1)-(17) stay green as the regression floor.

…y in model.h

RIPWIRE-RUBY task C piece C1: the ladder inside dedupRawDefs moves VERBATIM
to model.h next to SymKind (same values, same comments, same field), so the
resolver tower added by C2 orders from the ONE table instead of a copy —
pre-review reuse rule redhat-et#23 satisfied by hoisting the existing lambda.

Behavior-preserving by construction, and gated that way: rebuilt in the
leap-build container, map of this repo byte-identical to the base binary
(b59b082, proven parity first), determinism x2, xmllint clean, kParserVer
stays 184 — nothing extraction-side changed, so every warm cache stays
valid. DISTINCT from gitmine.h's §H6 "specificity-ordered mapper", which
orders file PATHS on a different axis; nothing there reads this ladder.

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
RIPWIRE-RUBY task C piece C2: resolveAllByName and resolveAllByNameQualified
now return their NAME tiers in one total order — kindSpecificity DESC (the
ladder C1 hoisted: a Method beats a Var beats a Section), then the language
of the most specific symbol first, then id ASC. The early tiers (canonical
id, Scope::name, @seed, dotted scope) keep their own answers; the tower
orders WITHIN a tier. Query-time only: buildGraph's edge candidates are
untouched, so kParserVer stays 184 and every warm cache remains valid.

Reference-language design: the tower's own leading symbol (highest
specificity, lowest id) defines the language that wins same-kind ties — a
deterministic, self-contained rule; in the collision fixture a Ruby Method
leads a Python one, and Ruby schema columns lead the yaml section.

BLAST RADIUS (PR-body lead, per the campaign DoD): every multi-def
single-pick answer, ALL languages, may change. Proven on this tree: map
output BYTE-UNCHANGED (diff -q vs the b59b082 binary — the crawl-order
<rows> and ranks do not move, only resolver answers), determinism x2,
xmllint clean. On the copied rubyschemafix tree the live bug flips in both
front doors: --around=name focuses t="var" AllFour::name BEFORE, t="method"
AllFour::name AFTER; lspcheck (18) byte-pins the Method-Var-column-yaml
order on workspace/symbol, definition front and hover front, (21) proves
the C/C++ decl/def refinement composes with the sort, (22) the new dialog
is byte-stable. (19) stays RED until C4 lands the disclosure.

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
RIPWIRE-RUBY task C piece C3: resolveFocus keeps front() — with C2's sorted
input the front IS the tower-picked definition — and every sentence that
still described the pre-C pick as "the lowest id" is corrected to the
mechanism as shipped. Historical measurement claims (the pre-tower 69/54
E3e counts, the pre-tower docs/api.md --lego anecdote) are kept as history,
relabelled where their tense implied the present.

Live text (surfaced in output, not just comments): the defs= legend reading
(compactlegend.h — "most-specific kind walked first, its language ahead, id
last, code first, ..."), the safe-delete t=/p= reading, the owners files=
MCP disclosure ("the TOWER FRONT of them (most specific kind, leading
language, then lowest node id)"), and the MCP connect terminal-binding
sentence. Comment lanes: resolveFocus's doc block, definitionCountOfName,
the --edit-check projection note, verbs_navigate's defs[0] lead-orientation
note, §A6a, the fetch_body find_symbol note, mcpindex resolveHandle's
pointer (the handle COLLISION lane keeps its own lowest-id rule — it is a
canonId-hash collision path, not a name-tier answer).

C/C++ decl/def refinement unchanged: bodyless front yields to the lowest-id
C/C++ match WITH a body in the same scope.

Gates (leap-build container): the 18-gate file sweep for the five touched
sources — docscommandscheck, compactlegendcheck, legendcostcheck,
legendcoveragecheck, helpbudgetcheck, graphlegendbudgetcheck,
attribmultidefcheck, ownerscheck, safedeletecheck, floormarkcheck,
emittertruthcheck, mcpverbscheck, mcpmanifestcheck, mcpflagshipcheck,
mcphandlecheck, decltodefcheck (residue driver compiles), connectcheck,
docanchorcheck — ALL PASS; determinism x2 and xmllint re-proved below.
docs/COMMANDS.md needs no regen (generator reports the documented set ==
binary set; legend prose is not embedded).

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
RIPWIRE-RUBY task C piece C4: when a NAME resolves to more than one
definition the --lsp server no longer answers as if one were simply
"the" answer. One sentence, one channel each:

  hover — the markdown gains "*N definitions for `name` — counts
                are floors; the resolver splits over them.*" beside the
                def block it qualifies (the D6 standing-floor voice);
  definition — the SAME sentence rides a window/logMessage (type 3)
                sent AHEAD of every multi-def answer, the channel
                lspWorkspaceCapNotice already proves (arm 17);
  single-def  — nothing is added: scale's hover/definition bytes stay
                byte-identical, arm (19) pins the absence.

The count is resolveAllByName's own — the same resolver the pick and
the list come from, so a disclosed N can never disagree with the rows
(the definitionCountOfName doctrine, carried onto the LSP surface).
The sentence says SPLITS because the tower-ordered list IS the split
set: nothing pinned, everything reachable. Wording flagged for owner
review (Q4: proposed here, veto at PR review is one amend).

lspcheck.sh arm fix: (19) counts ONE logMessage per definition answer
(d18 has one) — corrected pre-implementation while the arm was still
RED on base, no pin was weakened.

Gates: full lspcheck on the C4 binary — ALL PASS, 23 arms (18)(19a)(19b)
(19c)(20)(21)(22) green, the 17-arm floor untouched; map of this repo
byte-UNCHANGED vs the b59b082 base binary, determinism x2, xmllint
clean (the disclosure moves no map byte — it lives only in --lsp frames).

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
RIPWIRE-RUBY task C, per user GO: the A2-dependent click arm belongs in C.
(18b) definition on a consumer of the UNIQUE schema column event_id lands
on its db/schema.rb row (Zed's click path), and a consumer of the
COLUMN-ONLY repeated created_at lands schema-first with the N-definitions
disclosure beside it — cross-kind columns stay reachable; the split
click on a name WITH defs correctly fronts the Method (verified live:
name's front is the def, so the column case is tested column-only).
(23) pins the DoD-known-gap coherence: the --around row shows the tower
front t="method" AllFour::name AND its defs="19" — the query-time order
and the untouched edge-candidate set disagree LOUDLY, never silently.

Red on the b59b082 base binary (18b and 23 both FAIL there), green on
the task-C binary: lspcheck 28 PASS lines, ALL PASS, 25 arms.

Moved the (18b) block after (20) — its fixture files added to the shared
collision tree would otherwise widen (20)'s --uses floor against a hover
computed before they existed (ordering hazard caught by audit, not luck).

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
--quality-delta=origin/main..HEAD on the task-C branch scored nine gating
rows against the campaign's own new code; all three shapes are the house
patterns the repo already keeps, so the fix is the pattern, not an ack:

  * both disclosures now ride ONE lspLogMessageFrame — the cap notice's
    bytes are unchanged (arm 17 keeps them), the multi-def notice's ride
    arm 19's; the seven duplication pairings were the re-spelled frame
    skeleton, not the sentences;
  * lspDefinition carries its notice in the LspDefinitionAnswer return
    (four in, one out) — under the §params bar the two out-parameters
    tripped;
  * kindSpecificity is a constexpr table indexed by enumTableAt in
      SymKind order with the length static_assert — §3's
      table-over-switch rule (the same shape as kEvWhyTagTable and
      kLspKindWords); the hoisted switch had cloned the SymKind readers
      (178 tokens against lspKindOf).

Gates: lspcheck ALL PASS (25 arms) on the rebuilt binary; map of this
repo byte-unchanged vs the b59b082 base binary, determinism x2, xmllint
clean. ASan is re-run on the final tree.

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.
The ratchet re-opens a row the moment it worsens past the acked size; reason recorded in the ledger line. --quality-delta=origin/main..HEAD now answers regressions=0 gating=0 acked=6.

…t can fail

Review findings addressed (changes-max, rev-33c368278cf5):
- graph.h resolveFocus exception: reworded to the tower-front bodied
  definition of the same scope — the scan walks tower-ordered matches,
  so a mixed-kind same-name collision is won by kind, not id;
- mcpverbs.h atSeedDefOr note: scoped the C2 move to the OWNERS UNION —
  the @-seed rebind is a line enclosure the tower never reorders;
- serialize.h full --around legend: "the lowest-id one was walked"
  replaced with the tower reading (the compact term's sibling C3
  updated — the full lane had been missed); decltodefcheck E3g fixtures
  and compactlegendcheck (D12) needle re-pinned in lockstep;
- lspcheck (20): parity grep now grep -qF (literal path, no dot-wildcards);
- lspcheck (21): rebuilt to actually exercise its contract — quad.h +
  z_quad.cpp so the bodyless prototype carries the LOWER crawl-order id,
  the pick asserted on the single-pick --around verb (defs="2" premise
  guard, body row + caller present, decl row absent), the whole-list
  definition answer pinned beside it as the list it is. Fails if the
  same-scope yield is removed; verified live by the fix round.
- compactlegendcheck (U): around/v1 pin 770 -> 830 (measured 812) — the
  breach localises to the reviewed commits' own +44 B compact defs
  reading (splicing the pre-rewrite term back measures 768 B); evidence
  recorded in the table comment.

…der, honest (18)

Review findings addressed (changes-max, rev-496ad92798c0, all 8):
- editcheck.h (redhat-et#2, correctness): the tower reached --edit-check's group
  model — lowestNode was filled from members.front(), which no longer
  arrives id-ascending. Traced every consumer (editpreview, mcpverbs,
  verbs_quality — all want THE FOCUS, verbs_quality binds it as `focus`),
  so the field becomes focusNode and editCheckRoundTripSpelling compares
  CONTAINMENT, not first elements: order-independent by construction.
  Proved with a mixed-kind two-contract red-control: pre-fix binary
  degrades the refusal to @file:LINE seeds, post-fix offers canonical ids
  that all paste back accepted;
- model.h (redhat-et#6): three enumerator-keyed static_asserts pin ordinal AND
  weight of Method/Section/FuncType together — a reordered SymKind
  without the matching table permutation is now a build error (house
  pattern, cf. serialize.h's Unknown==12);
- lspcheck arm (18) (redhat-et#8): the def-front clause grepped '"line":9' inside
  a 260-byte window that a regressed Var-first order also satisfied —
  replaced by file-anchored offset comparison like its ws/symbol sibling.
  Red-control on the base binary's real regressed bytes: old clause
  PASS (the flaw), new clause FAIL;
- graph.h (redhat-et#3): the local under the rewritten contract is `towerFront`,
  not `lowest`;
- .ripwire_quality_acks (redhat-et#1): runLsp complexity/verbosity rows now name
  the actual growth (the answer-struct destructure + notice branch), the
  concat-shape argument stays only where it belongs;
- graphlegend.h, lsp.h comment split, verbs_report.h (redhat-et#4/redhat-et#5/redhat-et#7): the
  remaining distant voices of the tower — the CLI --owners twin now
  matches its MCP sibling.

Gates: 18/18 targeted file-sweep ALL PASS in the leap-build container
(lspcheck editcheck family x5 decltodef incl. compile-driver compact/
legend budget x2 docanchor owners mcp x3 connect affected attribmultidef);
determinism x2; map byte-IDENTICAL vs the b59b082 base binary; xmllint
clean; editpreviewcheck green on the parallel host sweep.

…ched to its guards

Review findings addressed (changes-max, rev-aae42d3f5c3f, all 6):
- graph.h (redhat-et#2): the --connect tie-break prose still asserted "candidates
  ascend by id" after C2 — corrected to what the scan does: a strictly
  better join wins, ties keep the FIRST candidate met, and the arrival
  order is the tower front for the name/file tier (id-ascending only on
  the canonical-id/Scope::name tiers);
- model.h (redhat-et#3): the table comment over-claimed — three keyed asserts
  anchor Method/Section/FuncType ordinals+weights, but a swap of two
  UNANCHORED enumerators (Var/Interface) would trip none; the claim now
  says exactly that, guards unchanged;
- lspcheck arm (18) (redhat-et#5): the hover-front clause was an unanchored
  membership grep over the whole hover — it now asserts the method block
  offset EQUALS the first def-block offset. Red-control on the base
  binary's real Var-first bytes: OLD clause PASS (the flaw), NEW FAIL
  (method=235 vs first=74); green on the current build (74=74);
- lspcheck arm (18b) (redhat-et#6): both 340-byte windows replaced by first-row
  containment (needle offset >= first row start and < second row start).
  Honest qualifier recorded: base CANNOT regress this clause (created_at's
  two defs tie on kind, so id order == tower order there) — the control
  is base's real Location rows transposed byte-for-byte: OLD window PASS,
  NEW first-row FAIL;
- decltodefcheck (redhat-et#4): framing paragraph "lowest-id projection" ->
  "tower-front projection", lockstep with graphlegend.h;
- .ripwire_quality_acks (redhat-et#1): the runLsp complexity/verbosity rows now
  name their own growth (the defs>1 branch), the concat-shape argument
  stays on the duplication rows it belongs to.

Deliberately NOT fixed this round (parked for the next review to judge):
test/mcphandlecheck.sh prose still says "lowest-id pick" on fetch_body's
name path — a gate outside this branch's touched set.

Gates: one container build (BUILD_EXIT=0); BOTH the fixer's and the
loop-owner's independent sweeps agree — lspcheck, decltodefcheck (incl.
the compile-driver arm), compactlegendcheck, connectcheck, connectcorecheck
(with its ASan/UBSan arm), editcheckcheck: ALL PASS; determinism x2;
map byte-IDENTICAL vs the b59b082 base snapshot; xmllint clean.

…premise-pinned arms

Review findings addressed (changes-max, rev-bedff612f3c0, all 7):
- verbs_report.h (redhat-et#2, warning): the EMITTED --owners legend still taught
  "the FIRST of them (lowest node id)" while both sibling copies of the
  sentence had been fixed around it — now the tower front (kind, leading
  language, lowest id), ownerscheck's pinned needles re-pinned lockstep;
- graph.h (redhat-et#1): declToDefFollowThrough's comment claimed its ascending
  sort is a caller contract — applyNameTower re-orders the tier two
  lines later at the only call site; the comment now says what is true:
  the sort makes the widening's own output deterministic BEFORE the
  tower orders the tier (the sort itself untouched);
- decltodefcheck (redhat-et#4): E3 framing + echoed E3d title moved to the
  tower-front language, finishing the file's stale-pick-rule walk;
- lspcheck arms (redhat-et#5, redhat-et#6): the (19) single-def control now pins its own
  premise (the hovered answer must exist before asserting the sentence's
  absence — it PASSed on an absent answer before); the (20) parity arm
  states the kLspHoverUseCap=8 premise against the capped hover tier.
  Red-controls: OLD (19) control PASSes the base binary's null-answer
  bytes, NEW FAILs them; redhat-et#6's grown-copy hover is named by premise, not
  misdiagnosed as parity failure;
- mcphandlecheck (redhat-et#7): wording-only per loop-owner decision (the
  campaign's C3 scope names the MCP descriptions lane) — comments and
  arm-title strings, zero assertion changes;
- compactlegendcheck (redhat-et#3): the safe-delete row's measured 828 -> 830
  attributed to e5d39f7's +2 B clause (9 B -> 11 B tower-front match),
  pin 840 unchanged — the table's own re-pin-in-the-commit-that-adds-
  bytes rule.

Gates: one container build (BUILD_EXIT=0); owner sweep — lspcheck,
ownerscheck, decltodefcheck, compactlegendcheck (rc=0, ALL PASS on the
stable file), mcphandlecheck, mcpverbscheck, mcpmanifestcheck ALL PASS;
determinism x2; map byte-IDENTICAL vs the b59b082 base snapshot;
xmllint clean. One earlier compactlegendcheck FAIL was proven transient:
a released continuation edited the script mid-run (bash reads scripts
incrementally) — reproduced rc=0 in-container afterwards.

…hey describe

Final round under the loop's 5-iteration cap. Four findings (changes-max,
rev-96d8ae4ba475, all confirmed, all prose-class), all fixed:
- editcheck.h (redhat-et#1): the focusNode comment claimed "the focus resolveFocus
  would pick" — false at one site: resolveFocus carries the bodyless
  C/C++ yield, so a same-file prototype+def group's front is the
  prototype while the yield picks the bodied member. Now states the
  exact relation (same node except where the documented yield moves the
  pick) — verified against the resolveFocus body and the emitted legend,
  which already carry the two rules separately;
- mcpverbs.h (redhat-et#2): "Post-C2"/"pre-C2" dated the union's tower move to
  the wrong lane — the harvest-card C2 is a different change entirely
  (every other C2 in the touched files means that card correctly).
  Reworded to name the mechanism: once the name tier took the tower,
  the union's pre-tower lowest-id pick moved with it;
- lspcheck (redhat-et#3): arm (18b) prose (and the header line) said column
  clicks resolve to "db/schema.rb" — the fixture's schema.rb sits at the
  collision-tree root; repo sweep shows the remaining db/schema.rb
  mentions are all legitimate;
- ownerscheck (redhat-et#4): the paragraph tail iteration 4's head-rewrite left
  stale, now reads the tower-front rule once, coherently.

Gates: one container build (0 errors; comment edits recompile the main
TU — the compile gate itself); editcheckcheck, lspcheck, ownerscheck ALL
PASS in-container on the relinked binary; determinism x2; map
byte-IDENTICAL vs the b59b082 base snapshot. Diff is prose-only:
4 files, +16/−11, zero behavior lines.

Loop status: five iterations, findings 7/8/6/7/4, all fix-set items
fixed (30 across the run), DISCUSS accumulator empty throughout, churn
guards 10/10 monotonic. The loop now stops at its cap; this commit was
verified by the full gate protocol but has not itself been re-reviewed.

Name-resolution results now use tower ordering, and consumers use the resulting focus node. LSP definition and hover responses disclose multiple definitions. Tests cover collision ordering, focus selection, and disclosure behavior.

Changes: Name resolution and selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rank name matches and select focus nodes
src/model.h, src/ingest_model.h, src/graph.h
A shared specificity table ranks symbol kinds. Bare-name and name/file matches use kind, language, and ID ordering. resolveFocus prefers a same-scope C/C++ body when the tower front is bodyless.
Use the tower-front focus across commands
src/editcheck.h, src/editpreview.h, src/mcpverbs.h, src/verbs_navigate.h, src/verbs_quality.h, src/verbs_report.h, src/compactlegend.h, src/serialize.h, src/graphlegend.h, test/decltodefcheck.sh, test/mcphandlecheck.sh, test/ownerscheck.sh, test/compactlegendcheck.sh, .ripwire_quality_acks
Edit-check paths use focusNode. Safe-delete and related selection descriptions use tower ordering. Tests and compact-legend expectations reflect the updated ordering. The quality-acknowledgement ledger records additional acknowledgements and removes a prior entry.
Disclose multiple definitions in LSP
src/lsp.h, test/lspcheck.sh, .ripwire_quality_acks
Definition responses send a multiple-definition notice before the result. Hover adds a definition-count sentence. Tests cover collision ordering, notices, hover behavior, and deterministic output.

Ordering of multi-definition name answers is deterministic. In a narrow C/C++ case, a forward-declared class or struct can lose focus to a same-named function in the same scope. This affects the focus used by commands such as --around and --edit-check. It is a bounded edge case that can be fixed before or shortly after merge.

Thanks @mpapis, this is a really useful change. One total order for every multi-definition name, and one disclosure sentence on top of it, closes a gap we've been working around in several verbs. The red-first arms for each flip class and the byte-identical map make it easy to review.

Landing order. Our train 33 integration PR is in its final checks now, and we'll take a measurement round on that head alone. We'd like to merge #432 right after train 33 lands, so its flips (it changes single-pick answers in every language) are measured and attributed on their own and not mixed in with train 33's. We'll handle the main-merge into your branch once train 33 is in, unless you'd rather do it.

How it composes with our --path work. Two lanes in flight touch the same seam:

  • A backward-hop provider for --path / --impact already avoids a single pick for a multi-definition sink (its next step names the bare name). So --path is unaffected, but --impact on a bare multi-definition name will start from your tower front instead of the lowest id. That's the intended effect, and we'll re-check those rows when that lane rebases onto feat(resolvers): order every multi-definition name answer with one tower; disclose splits in --lsp (RIPWIRE-RUBY C) #432.
  • The next planned step is choosing --path endpoints when a name has several definitions, the --path twin of --connect's "pick the definition that joins" scoring. We'll reuse scoreTerminalCandidates with your tower as the tie-break, not add a second ordering.

The textual overlap is small (legend text in compactlegend.h / mcpverbs.h and the byte pins in test/compactlegendcheck.sh), so we expect pin re-derives rather than logic conflicts.

Happy to leave the main-merge to you once train 33 lands — no point both of us chasing a moving head. If the pin re-derives in test/compactlegendcheck.sh / legend text turn out to want a hand, say the word and I'll push the re-pin commit the same day. Good to hear the tower composes with the --path endpoint work; reusing scoreTerminalCandidates rather than a second ordering is what the query-time-only carve-out was for.

One more note, @mpapis: this is really awesome, and very timely. It's super helpful for what we're working on right now. It lines up directly with our backward-hop work for --path / --impact: with a definite, kind-aware pick for every multi-definition name, those traces can follow the right definition across files, not a lowest-id guess. Together they should give better answers to a lot of everyday code questions ("who reaches this?", "how does A get to B?") in one call. That replaces much of the searching and grepping an agent or a human would otherwise do. Thank you!

Conflicts: src/model.h (kKindSpecificityTable beside main's scopeLastSegment, both kept)
and src/verbs_navigate.h (main's safe-delete declined-literal legend kept, redhat-et#432's tower-front
comment on defs[0] kept). resolveFocus composes as: tower order, then train 33's code-first
rotate (the first CODE match in tower order leads), then the C/C++ bodied same-scope scan.

… longer claims a split

Two findings from the maintainer review of redhat-et#432, each pinned by a test/lspcheck.sh arm that is red
on the unfixed merge:

(24) A constructor is a Method, the tower's top rung, so for a bare class name it outranked the class:
Java/C# `public Shape() {}` and C++ `Widget::Widget()` made --lego answer about the constructor
(implementors=0 for a class with a subclass) and --around/--connect focus it. nameTowerRanks puts a
Method whose scope ends in its name, or that sits inside a same-named type of the match set, just
below the type kinds and above a free function. A method named like an unrelated type keeps its rung
(near-miss arm).

(25) "the resolver splits over them" was printed for a C prototype beside its body, a pair the graph
binds to the body alone (no amb=). The sentence now reads "a call may bind to any one of them", which
is what a same-name count supports; arm (19)'s pins follow the new text.

…n macOS

(26) Swapping the comparator's kind and language tiers left every tower gate green (lspcheck,
rubyattrscheck, rubyschemacheck, decltodefcheck): their collision trees are single-language, so the
language tier never decides. A Ruby method, a Python class and a Ruby attr named alike must answer
method, class, attr; the language-first mutant answers method, attr, class (red on the mutant, green
on the head).

WORK is now the physical path (pwd -P): on macOS mktemp returns /var/folders/... while the server
answers file:///private/var/..., so arm (21)'s URI pins failed on every Mac run.

…egend text

redhat-et#432 rewrites the --around and --safe-delete legends ("lowest-id" -> "tower front"); on test/fixture
the answers are otherwise unchanged (diffed vs main: legend comment and est_tokens only). Regenerated
with UPDATE_GOLDEN=1; only those two rows moved.

Thanks again @mpapis. Train 33 has landed, so we merged main into your branch and finished the review. One order for every multi-definition name, plus one disclosure sentence, is a real improvement. The red-first arms made the review quick.

What we pushed to your branch (maintainerCanModify):

  • 467bbadc merges main (train 33). The conflicts were textual: src/model.h keeps your kKindSpecificityTable beside main's scopeLastSegment, and src/verbs_navigate.h keeps main's safe-delete legend with your tower-front comment. resolveFocus now runs in this order: your tower, then train 33's code-first rotate (the first code match in tower order goes first), then your C/C++ bodied-same-scope scan.
  • f5d18ae1 fixes two things, each red on the unfixed merge:
    • A constructor outranked its own class. A constructor is a Method, the top rung, so for a bare class name --lego=Shape answered about public Shape() {}. It printed implementors="0" for a Java/C# class with a subclass, and the same happened for C++ Widget::Widget() when the header sorts first. --around/--connect also focused the constructor. Now a Method whose scope ends in its own name, or that sits inside a same-named type in the match set, ranks just below the type kinds. A method named after an unrelated type keeps its rung (near-miss arm). lspcheck arm (24).
    • The split sentence over-claimed. A C prototype next to its body printed "the resolver splits over them", but the graph binds the call to the body alone (no amb=). The sentence now says "a call may bind to any one of them". Arm (25); arm (19) pins the new text.
  • 97d0b6d3 adds the changelog.d/432-name-tower.md fragment, credited to you.
  • d9fe1e77 adds arm (26). We mutated the comparator to put the language tier before the kind tier, and every tower gate stayed green: the collision trees are single-language. The new arm uses a Ruby method, a Python class and a Ruby attr. Same commit: WORK is now pwd -P, so arm (21)'s URI pins hold on macOS (/var vs /private/var).
  • c1a99732 re-pins test/printf_parity.manifest for your new --around / --safe-delete legend text. Only those two rows moved.

Measured effect. On our 163 stored benchmark calls, 3 answers changed bytes. Two are reorders only (same definitions, same rows: --impact=match on hono, --callers=Get on nfpm). The third is the safe-delete legend wording. No single pick changed. In a census of every multi-row name in tmux (1,990 names), --around moved on 7. Six are C struct X vs function X(), where the tower now picks the struct. One is getopt, which moves from the compat macro to the real function.

On the CodeRabbit note (bodyless class yielding to a same-scope function): we could not reproduce it. A C++ forward declaration class Engine; carries sc="Engine", so the same-scope scan never reaches the free Engine(), and C struct Foo; is not indexed. No change.

One question for you, no need to block on it. The tower is kind-first for every verb. So --around=args_parse in tmux now answers the struct rather than the function, and a Go getter func (s *Server) Config() Config outranks type Config struct for --around=Config. Would you rather have the single-pick verbs choose by role (call verbs prefer a callable, --lego prefers a type) before the tower, or keep one order and rely on defs=? Either is fine with us. We'd do it as a follow-up.

From our side this is ready to merge once the owner pushes these commits and CI is green.

@mpapis, a quick update on why CI is red on c1a99732, and why we're holding the merge.

Apart from the known showcase capture refresh, two gates fail, and both are --lego picks on a same-kind tie:

  • test/a9disclosurecheck.sh §A9.4 runs --lego=Shape on the repo root, where 16 definitions share the name. With the tower it answers test/elixirresolvefix/lib/shape.ex, which has methods="0" and the not-extracted caveat, instead of the C++ Shape whose contract is extracted. So the <m> rows disappear.
  • test/kotlincheck.sh (split and flat layouts) runs --lego=Marker on a tree with a Kotlin interface Marker and a Java one. It now answers the Java interface, so the Kotlin implementor arm reads the wrong type.

Main passes both. They fail the same way on our first merge of main into your branch, before any of our fixes, so they come from the tie-break order, not from the constructor change. When two definitions share a kind, the tower orders them by the leading symbol's language and then by id. That is deterministic, but for --lego it can now land on a type with no extracted contract.

This is the role question from our last comment, now with gate evidence. Our leaning is a small tie-break under the kind rank: for --lego, prefer a definition whose contract is extracted (more methods first), then keep your language and id order. Both gates would turn green and the tower's order would stay intact. Would you like to take that, or should we push it to your branch as before? We'll be back on this in a few days. Train 34 is landing first, so expect one more merge of main into the branch.

Thanks again for the tower.

Thanks for the deep dive and the fair landing plan — answers to both your questions, plus a design direction this investigation shook out.

Take the tie-break. Please push the lego methods-first change as you proposed — it's a view-local preference inside a kind rank, it fixes both gates, and re-deriving it here would just burn a CI cycle. Same for train 34's merge; no need to wait on me for either.

Why the gates broke, precisely (reproduced both on c1a99732 before your fixes landed): A9.4 isn't the constructor change and isn't even primarily my language tier — the Interface rung (4, inherited from the dedup ladder) puts the Elixir module and three Rust traits above every C++ Class before language gets a vote; then the reference-language tier picks which interface by (top rank, lowest id) — a path-alphabet accident elects a language that then dominates the set it was chosen from. That circularity is my design flaw, not the tower's premise, and your diagnosis "comes from the tie-break order" is exactly right. Main passing was accident-of-id, which is the thing #432 exists to abolish — so these failures are the contract working.

Role question: single order + defs= for this PR, please — with one amendment worth extracting now: the language tier as written should become anchor-ordered clusters — (anchor cluster, rank, id) where clusters are langCompatible's own equivalence classes ({C,C++,ObjC}, {JVM}, self). The codebase already enforces precisely this for edges (keepOwnJvmLanguageCandidates: leave home only when home defines no candidate) — the display lane contradicting it is the seam my tower widened, and it's why kotlincheck's lego answer and kotlincheck's edge policy disagreed on the same name in the same commit. Anchoring the display to query context (the LSP already receives languageId and doesn't read it; file:name/@FILE:LINE carry an anchor; corpus-dominant as last resort, disclosed as reflang=) makes Shape=C++ here and Marker=Kotlin there, dissolves the circular tier, and would have turned both your gates green on its own. Your methods-first tie-break composes with that unchanged (it lives inside a cluster), so nothing you're pushing now is thrown away.

I'm already working on it on a separate branch based off this one — say the word if you see it going the wrong direction and I'll weigh it seriously; otherwise expect a PR soon.

Also: thank you for the constructor demotion and the sentence correction — both were right, the Widget::Widget() analysis read better than my own, and arm (26)'s mutation test is the kind of gate work this campaign should have been doing from day one.

Small amendment to my note above, since the design sharpened under review of itself: the ordering is not "(anchor cluster, rank, id)" — that collapsed two tiers into one, and the JVM case breaks under it: Java and Kotlin share a partition, so a same-rung tie falls back to path order, the very accident we are trying to kill. The rule is language-first: exact matching language → its edge-family → the kind ladder → foreign languages last, where levels decide within a language, never across languages. "Family" is just langCompatible's existing partition ({C,C++,ObjC}, {Java,Kotlin}), borrowed because the edge layer already treats C as C++'s world — a middle ground, not the headline. Everything else in the note above stands.

… on one type rung

--lego asks for a TYPE, but the tower ranks Interface (4) above
Class/Struct (3), so on a same-name collision the kind rung alone chose
the answer. Two gates went red on redhat-et#432:
- a9disclosurecheck §A9.4: --lego=Shape on the repo root (16 defs)
  answered the Elixir test/elixirresolvefix/lib/shape.ex (Interface,
  methods="0" caveat="not-extracted-for-lang") over the C++ Shape whose
  <m> contract is extracted.
- kotlincheck §13 (split + flat): --lego=Marker answered the Java
  `interface Marker` (no implementor) over the Kotlin one, which the
  grammar tags as a class and which Tagged implements.

Diagnosis by @mpapis (redhat-et#432); the fix they approved is a methods-first
tie-break for --lego. Neither gate is a same-kind tie (iface vs cls in
both), so in this view every type kind (namespaceCompatible(Type))
shares one rung, keyed by: extracted contract (legoMethodContractSound)
first, then at least one implementor, then the tower's own kind rank,
language and id. Other rungs keep the tower rank. A Rust trait still
leads a same-named struct (nushell FromValue / PluginCommand keep 26 /
201 implementors). View-local (serialize.h legoRoleOrder /
resolveLegoFocus, CLI --lego and MCP lego only); resolveFocus is split
into focusOfOrderedMatches so code-first and the C/C++ body yield still
apply. Query-time only; kParserVer untouched.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…v-pr432-delta B1)

legoMethodContractSound is decided by language alone (C++/Objective-C), so with the
extracted-contract key first, any C++ type beat every other language's type, even a
data-only one with no implementors (a Rust trait with 2 implementors lost to a vendored
C++ header class of the same name; vscode --lego=Foo went from a TS type with 10
implementors to a .cpp fixture with 0). Key order is now rung, hasImplementor,
isContractExtracted, tower rank. Where every candidate has implementors (A9.4 Shape) the
extracted contract still settles it.

- test/legocheck.sh arm 15 (throwaway corpus): Rust trait Render x2 impls vs data-only
  C++ Render; red at 0cd08b6, green here.
- changelog fragment (N1): the contract step is today C++ and Objective-C.
- docs/ARCHITECTURE.md (N2): --lego / MCP lego take their focus from resolveLegoFocus.

@mpapis, thanks for taking the tie-break. It's pushed to your branch now.

We merged train 34 into the branch and pushed the --lego tie-break, building on your diagnosis that the failures came from the tie-break order rather than from the tower itself. One wrinkle shaped the change. Neither red gate was a same-kind tie: shape.ex is an interface next to C++ classes, and Kotlin's grammar tags interface Marker as a class. So within --lego only, every type kind shares one rung. On it, a type with at least one implementor comes first, then a type whose method contract we actually read (<m> rows, today only C++/Objective-C), then your tower's kind, language and id order.

The implementor step goes beyond the literal "methods-first" you approved, so please push back if you would rather not have it. We kept it because it is language-neutral and it preserves the trait-over-struct picks your tower gained (nushell FromValue, PluginCommand). It also sits ahead of the contract step, so a lone C++ header can't outrank a Rust trait or TS interface that has implementors (new legocheck arm 15). resolveFocus, --around and --connect are byte-unchanged. Once your exact-language → family → kind ladder → foreign-last order sits above this rung, the contract step becomes a no-op across languages, so your follow-up composes on top without undoing anything here.

New commits on the branch since c1a99732:

  • a6a3afe6 merge of main (train 34)
  • 0cd08b67 lego: read the tower by role on one type rung
  • e59e5d80 lego: implementors outrank the extracted contract
