Summary

  • The xmloxide parser writes each node straight into the semantic arena; no backend DOM is built, projected or dropped.
  • An entity's replacement text is read into the same tree, its nodes taking the outermost reference's range, unactionable as before.
  • The lexical scan records source positions only for a backend that reads them (roxmltree and the differential parse).

Changes

  • XmlParser is generic over a Tree. The xmloxide Document is one tree; the semantic arena (Semantic in xml/dom/xmloxide.rs) is the tree of every xmloxide parse. The projector and the fragment graft are removed.
  • The parser supplies every source range, with or without a DOCTYPE; text resumed after an entity reference starts after it. The internal subset is serialized only for a tree that keeps the DOCTYPE node, and a DOCTYPE is read only from its case-sensitive keyword.
  • LexicalPreflight keeps positions only when its backend reads them; a build without roxmltree records none.
  • The projection benchmark and the latency example cover roxmltree only. The maintained xmloxide delta is regenerated.
  • A test now crosses the resolver's short prefix list in native and accounted storage.

Testing

Tests (with the xmlsec1 oracle and SoftHSM), workspace lints, formatting, the xmloxide delta check and the minimal xmloxide/roxmltree feature profiles pass on macOS; CI covers Linux, Windows and the full matrix. A same-host Linux A/B against the base shows xmloxide parse medians down about 20% on SAML 256 (text, adversarial about 15%, namespaces about 12%) and SAML verify about 7%, with roxmltree as the unchanged control.

Closes #385

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • XML documents can now be parsed directly into the shared tree, including when storage and resource limits are applied.
    • Improved tracking of source ranges for elements and text, including content from entity references.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected handling of namespace scopes, entity expansion, and attribute-value normalization.
    • XML parsing now requires the exact DOCTYPE keyword casing and supports only XML 1.0.
    • Projection benchmarks and requests are now limited to the roxmltree backend.

Walkthrough

The xmloxide parser now builds the shared semantic tree as it parses. The parser accepts caller-provided trees, tracks source spans, and parses entity replacement content into the destination tree. Lexical preflight and projection benchmarks now distinguish xmloxide from roxmltree.

Changes: Direct XML parsing and projection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generic tree contract and parser entry points
scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/mod.rs, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/xml.rs, src/parser_xmloxide/tree/mod.rs, src/document/parser_limit_tests.rs
The parser supports generic storage and caller-provided trees. Parse entry points return the supplied tree, and the parser tree interface replaces position-recording results. The removed child-grafting method is no longer part of the in-tree parser path.
XML parsing, storage, and limits
scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/input.rs, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/xml.rs
Parser operations use the generic tree and selected storage. Element, namespace, text, and DTD parsing propagate fallible operations and resource refusals. XML declaration and DOCTYPE parsing apply the updated syntax handling.
Entity replacement in the destination tree
scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/xml.rs, src/parser_xmloxide/tree/mod.rs
Entity replacements are parsed into the destination tree rather than a temporary document. Expanded nodes use the reference span, and entity expansion limits count declared entities.
Direct semantic-tree construction
src/xml/dom/xmloxide.rs, src/xml/dom/tree.rs, src/xml/dom/xmloxide/tests.rs
The xmloxide adapter supplies the semantic tree during parsing. It handles parser callbacks, applies spans, and finalizes nodes and subtrees. Tests cover ranges, malformed documents, accounted parsing, and entity expansion.
Backend-aware lexical preflight
src/xml/dom/preflight.rs, src/xml/dom/preflight/recorder_tests.rs, src/xml/dom/mod.rs, src/xml/dom/tree.rs
Lexical preflight tracks depth for all backends and records source positions only when roxmltree uses them. xmloxide no longer uses parser-recorded positions or the removed recorder tests.
Projection benchmark scope
src/xml/dom/benchmark.rs, benches/security.rs, tests/benchmark_contract.rs, examples/benchmark_latency.rs, examples/benchmark_latency/tests.rs, src/parser_xmloxide/documentation_tests.rs
Projection benchmarks and requests now allow only roxmltree. Benchmark contract and request tests follow this restriction. Documentation example references are updated.

This change builds the xmloxide semantic tree directly during parsing, which should speed up parsing without changing behavior. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains. The only open item is a minor test-naming suggestion.

Explanation

Issue [#385] requires direct semantic-tree construction, unchanged ranges and actionability, differential agreement with and without DOCTYPE, entity-reference ranges, preserved limits/errors/accounted storage, zero charge on refused parses, and a same-host performance improvement. XmloxideBackend now passes Semantic directly to the generic XmlParser; the old projection and fragment graft are removed. The parser and semantic tree carry source spans, including outermost-reference spans for expanded nodes. Added tests cover differential parsing, DOCTYPE handling, malformed-input parity, entity ranges, nested expansions, subtree closure, and empty replacements. The updated storage and limit tests exercise direct accounted parsing and parser-time node limits. The PR reports the required same-host improvement with roxmltree as the unchanged control.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed parser patch, preflight logic, semantic backend, storage and limit tests, differential tests, benchmarks, latency example, documentation references, and resolver test all support direct xmloxide tree construction, its resource contract, or its measurement. The evidence does not show a demonstrated unrelated change. No ignored files affect this assessment.

The xmloxide backend built its own DOM, which a projector then walked
to fill the semantic arena, and an entity's replacement text was read
into a separate fragment and grafted under the reference. The parser
now writes each node into the tree it is given:

- XmlParser is generic over a Tree. The xmloxide Document is one such
tree; the semantic arena is another, used by every xmloxide parse,
so no backend DOM is built, walked or dropped.
- A replacement text is read straight into the same tree. Its nodes
take the outermost reference's range and stay unactionable, and its
IDs stay out of the Document's index, as with the grafted fragment.
- The parser supplies every source range, with or without a DOCTYPE,
so the lexical scan records positions only for a backend that reads
them (roxmltree, and the differential parse). A build without
  roxmltree records none.
- The internal subset is serialized only for a tree that keeps the
  DOCTYPE node.
- Text resumed after an entity reference starts its range after the
reference, not at the start of the run before it.

The projection benchmark now covers roxmltree only, the backend that
still projects a DOM.
The resolver keeps a few bindings in a short list and moves them all to
the keyed table past that limit, but no test crossed the limit. One
binding per scope past the list, a rebinding after the move and the
unwinding back are now checked in native and accounted storage.
- The xmloxide parser reads a DOCTYPE only as the literal `<!DOCTYPE`
(XML 1.0 production 28, no case folding): the branch that entered the
declaration on `<!doctype` and the comment claiming a case-insensitive
match are removed. A test pins that a DOCTYPE keyword in any other case
is refused without the lexical scan, with `allow_dtd` off and on.
- The latency example lists and accepts `projection` only for roxmltree,
the one backend with a DOM to project; `--list` offered it for xmloxide
and the request panicked while preparing it. The regression test fails
  on the previous rule.
- The source-position ceiling test expects xmloxide to fold the CDATA run
into one text without a position sidecar and keeps the refusal for
roxmltree, which records one position per token.
- The scoped storage test compares the account with what the scan
retained, which is nothing in a build without roxmltree.
- The maintained xmloxide delta is regenerated.
